Vista Lago Adventure Park By Courtney Haile Photos by Justin Stoner

F

or the new Adventure Girl series in Tolosa Press I try new activities, push beyond my comfort zone of the gym, and explore what our little bubble of California has to offer. It seems dubious to write about Central Coast adventures without a visit to Vista Lago Adventure Park, located in the Lopez Lake recreation area in Arroyo Grande. Vista Lago is a side-by-side adventure and zip- line park with more than 50 elements to challenge your body and mind.

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast

I woke up on a Saturday morning excited and a tad nervous, nursing a slight headache from a sangria-like concoction I’d prepared the night before (rookie move, I know). Wanting to avoid crowds and heat, I arrived right before the park opened at 10:30 a.m. and checked in with Amy at the front window. I signed a two-page waiver, relinquished my keys as collateral for safety gear, and was ready for one hour of unlimited access.

A few other rugged outdoorsmen and I started at ground school, a 15-minute orientation and lesson on locking and unlocking oneself to a cable. This comes in handy and makes more sense in the air as this is how to transition from element to element. I stepped into a harness and got shackled to safety hardware before I learned how to traverse the cable. An anxious person, I worried about absorbing every morsel of information and compared myself to everyone else. Crap! Will I have to retain all of this information and demonstrate in front of everyone? I was indeed the first to demo and I didn’t totally have it down but there was no need to panic. Vista Lago has young friendly staff everywhere with a keen sense for newbies. Plus, I figured my co-worker Justin Stoner, Tolosa Press’ marketing guru, was listening. I didn’t have to attempt my first ropes course and zip lining adventure alone because Justin got harnessed in as well! continued, page 8

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast

We climbed the short, steep hill to the upper course where degrees of difficulty progress from yellow to black, 20 to 30 feet in the air. Nervous this was no longer a drill, I promptly forgot everything I learned in ground school. To start, I slowly and deliberately crept across four-inch wide wood planks while I grabbed ropes for support. I am not especially fearful of heights so it was more wiggly than scary. I continued to an element containing two ropes. Dependent on one’s positioning the ropes can be either friend or adversary. In other words, if you lean the wrong way you’re screwed. The sparse elements require more strategy than strength and I immediately and awkwardly swung sideways. Struggling with balance for a few long seconds was vulnerable; and fear stemmed not from actual danger but from loss of bodily control. I remembered the staffs’ tips to lean in to the supporting rope and cautiously made my way across. Relieved, I looked ahead to an intimidating spider webby wall.

I turned to the seasoned gentlemen behind us for advice and they encouraged me to use my leg strength. I am pretty darn strong, so gained confidence as I picked up speed and completed the yellow course. Justin’s time was up so I had the option of continuing through the green course alone or zip-lining for 30 more minutes. I spotted another ropey, potentially wobbly element ahead (yes, there were children attempting it with no hesitation). I opted for the zip line.

I regret not going for it because I know I could’ve done it; but I’d never zip lined and it requires far less skill. I did all three zips and was excitedly nervous before each one. The 700-footer is the fastest and most fun, and I screamed with delight each time.

My experience at Vista Lago Adventure Park was fun, thrilling, confidence building, and suitable for the mildly athletic and rarely adventurous. I will definitely visit again and give myself two hours to push myself further. Now that I understand the general movements, energy, and strategy involved, I will go in with confidence-- unafraid to fail or flail. Choose your own adventure at http://vistalagoadventurepark.com/. It also reminded a lot of people just how many of their friends and family members need a little assistance from time to time. More than a generation since public facilities, businesses that serve the public, and the built environment have been modified

to make reasonable accommodation for people in wheelchairs and with other needs - there are still vast swaths of experience closed off to them.

Jim Maples, a local retired coach and teacher, certainly thought about the difficulties faced by one particular loved one after moving to Grover Beach in 2015. Michelle Maples, his wife, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1994. The disease attacks patients’ nerves, causing pain and immo-

bility. By the time they moved to the Central Coast--a beautiful vacation destination--to enjoy the weather and atmosphere, as well as to protect Michelle’s health from the punishing Bakersfield heat, she was, said Jim, “more of a beach spectator with the kids. She couldn’t do much in the sand but sit to the side and watch or wave.” That’s about when Jim saw a CNN human-interest story about a Veteran, a “wounded warrior,” living in Florida who had started a company to restore mobility, if not activity, to vets and anyone else who needed some on the beaches of the ‘Sunshine State.’ “He was renting out these incredible rugged power-chairs and I just said, ‘that’s what Michelle needs!” said Jim, of course he added, “We couldn’t find one anywhere in California.”

With a lot more research, a business plan good enough to secure a loan from local Founders Community Bank in SLO, and a starting roster of four power chairs, that’s how Michelle became the inspiration for California Coast Beach Power Chair. The chairs take between four to six weeks to produce, so it took some time to set up a rental business in the Pismo Beach service area. Custom made by Beach Power Mobility, they feature a heavy aluminum frame, padded adjustable seats, joystick controls, fold up armrests, adjustable footrests, and an optional beach umbrella. “We have the advantage of all year tourism here, so it really is the perfect fit between a product and business,” said Jim, “to give people back independence and freedom on the beach or around town while they visit.”

“It’s helping people when they need it with their families, but it also makes our County accessible [for people with disabilities],” he added.

They’re now working with Beach Butlers, a local company that sets up weddings and other beach events, to have the chairs available for family functions as well as featuring the mini-vehicles at the Pismo Beach Classic Car Show and Fourth of July Fireworks at the Pier. One unit is available through Pismo Coast rentals. For the majority of other calls though, Jim delivers the chairs locally, which have an eight -hour battery life before recharge, for a pick-up delivery fee and $80 per day of use. “It’s been really great showing people what it can do. Whenever we go to an event people crowd around it,” said Jim. “It’s ‘Oh, cool. I never thought of that before,’ and they always have someone in mind who could use it.” For more information check out their website: www.rentbeachpowerchair.com.

The Making of a Maritime Museum By Judy Salamacha

T

wenty-plus years ago a small group of people launched a dream that intended to preserve historic focus on maritime, fishing, coastal commerce and homeland security for the Central Coast of California. The board of directors, with the help of a few “friends” like founder Brent Roberts, established a nonprofit called the Central Coast Maritime Museum Association (www. morrobaymaritime.org). Finally, in 2016 two events converged to bring that original dream to a reality. The City of Morro Bay identified a site - even donated and prepared a parcel under the looming stacks of the iconic power plant with a new postal address on the waterfront at 1210 Embarcadero. On D-Day Weekend in June, heavy haulers and overhead cranes positioned three vessels onsite to celebrate and establish the Maritime Museum of Morro Bay. On display and open for tours by volunteer docents on holidays and weekends are the U.S. Navy’s DSRV-2 Avalon, one of two rescue submarines built in the 1970s as a call-to-action after the crew of the USS Thresher sunk losing the entire crew; a U.S. Coast Guard roll-over rescue craft; and, after 15 years of restoration in the city’s boatyard, a freshened Alma, the tugboat owned by Sylvester’s Tug Services that was first on scene to rescue the crew off the oil tanker Montebello torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Cambria, CA ten days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II.

And, still to come to Morro Bay’s Embarcadero South T Pier this year on Sept. 29 through Oct. 10, is Cabrillo’s San Salvador: the Pacific Heritage Tour 2016. The Maritime Museum of San Diego also had a dream more than 20 years ago - to build an authentic full-scale replica of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s flag ship Spanish Galleon the San Salvador, the first European ship to discover the California Pacific coastline. It tours to ports in California as a “floating classroomâ€? for the public and school children to visit and learn about Cabrillo and life at sea in 1542. It is also thought that Cabrillo noticed El Moro during his search for a pathway to China. In later years Morro Rock became the beacon protecting docked fishing boats in Morro Bay as it welcomed visiting vessels to enter and stay and enjoy the Pacific coast fishing village. On Sept. 29 a Greeting Flotilla organized by the Morro Bay Yacht Club, including a newly crafted tule-reed boat built by the Salinan Tribe of San Luis Obispo and Monterey, will greet the San Salvador when tides are right at about 4:15 p.m. The crew of the San Salvador, captained by Dr. Ray Ashley, CEO/ President of the Maritime Museum of San Diego,

By Teri Bayus

omfort food is our first pleasure, representing the memory and flavors of our youth. When we revisit the sensory effect it is more than taste buds and fullness, it’s literally a remembrance of grandma, our childhood, and our life. I have assembled for you a list of the 10 top comfort restaurants in the area that hold true to the recipes of our youth.

#10 Apple Farm, San Luis Opispo Ladies first, let’s start with Willie (Executive Pastry Chef Willie Vey) known as the pie princess, the cookie queen and the maker of “the best darn biscuits in the world.” Her pies, cakes, muffins, cookies, and more are for sale and on display every day at The Apple Farm. If grandma was a baker, this is the only place that can hold a candle to her. Apple Farm is located at 2015 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo.

#9 The Quarterdeck, Arroyo Grande A restaurant that keeps your coffee cup full and has fresh squeezed orange juice is always a welcome remembrance. The French toast is magnificent--a superior accomplishment of the age-old combination of bread, milk, eggs, and vanilla, with a dusting of powdered sugar. Nothing speaks comfort more than biscuits and gravy. When it they are done right (made with bacon grease and bits) it is unparalleled. The fresh buttermilk

16

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast

biscuits and the flavor bursting gravy is so good, you will eat every rib sticking bite, and dream of your grandmother. The Quarterdeck is located at 1500 West Branch Road in Arroyo Grande.

#8 La Parisienne, Morro Bay If you were raised in France or your soul resides there after visiting, a French Patisserie is what you long to wake to, smelling hot pastries and bread rising. Start with an egg and ham sandwich on a freshly baked baguette with ham, fried potatoes and cheese. Don’t leave without a walnut sticky bun, a chocolate croissant, and an apricot pastry. You will eat every bite moaning with pleasure and then order a dozen fresh baked sugar cookies to go. For lunch try one of the many scrumptious quiches with French onion soup. The soup is topped with a crostini and smothered with shredded cheese, all complementing the super sweet onions. La Parisienne Bakery is located at 1140 Front Street in Morro Bay.

#7 Fish Gaucho, Paso Robles The wonderful heritage came together to make Fish Gaucho a successful Mexican eatery. Among a perfect taco, enchiladas and burritos are Churros. This recipe was from the chef’s grandmother and will blow you away in its authenticity and taste. It is served with a cup of warm Mexican chocolate. This three-generation recipe was hot and crispy and covered in cinnamon. The liquid chocolate for dipping was so good; you will drink it from the cup after the churros were eaten. Fish Gaucho is located at 1244 Park Street in downtown Paso Robles.

#6 Las Comadres, Santa Maria There is a misconception that a meal must be expensive to be decent. If the chef is passionate and well trained, the food is a culinary pleasure. The best example of this is a Salvadoran restaurant called Las Comadres. It is like leaving the country without a passport.

The house specialty is pupusas, a dish like no other and one of the most desired ethnic foods. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade maze tortilla that is filled with a blend of cheese, cooked pork meat ground to a paste consistency, refried beans, or queso con loroc. But they can be stuffed with anything. They are fried and served like an extra thick mesa tortilla. You then put the cabbage and onion mixture

(called curdido) on them, sprinkle the Salvadoran tomato sauce and pick them up like a taco and devour—all at the price of $2.25. Las Comadres is located at 202 West Main Street in Santa Maria.

#5 Surfside Pizza, Morro Bay

#4 Lil Bits, Grover Beach

Some of the best food is from small restaurants with a chef that pours his soul into the food. For pizza it is Chef Shawn (formerly of Shawn’s on Main). The menu is brief, the wine list on binder paper and the food is brilliant. The wedge salad served in a cold steel bowl, chunks of blue cheese, bacon, diced tomatoes and dressing. The pizza is daring and impeccable. The Breky pizza with potato, bacon, caramelized onion and a poached egg in the middle will remind you what pizza once was. It is family run and the 3-year-old taking your order just adds to the comfort. Surfside Pizza is at 2770 Main Street in Morro Bay.

The “diner” aspect of the chow scene captivates countless foodies. A well-deserved favorite spot is Lil Bits Café that is open for breakfast and lunch; they do down home cooking with bigger portion of better food. Try the perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict, with a delicious hollandaise sauce. The muffin is replaced with a fresh made biscuit. They run out every weekend; It is that good. But don’t forget to try the uber sweet Stuffed French Toast. This American classic is stuffed with fresh strawberries and cream cheese and dusted with powered sugar. Lil Bits is located at 151 North 7th Street in Grover Beach.

#3 Penny’s All American CafEé Restaurants who have become a staple in a town bring a sense of community and connectedness to all who eat there. This is a place where you can get a consistently great meal every time. The award winning Chili Verde, is prepared and perfected by cook/chef Amado. This delectable pork dish wrapped in tamale with chili verde inside and layered over the top is with a spicy Spanish rice and exquisitely stewed beans. Other favorites are the fried chicken. It is dusted in buttermilk and breadcrumb coating and then half-baked and finished in the fryer for a less greasy taste and more flavor. It is served with scrumptious mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus with a buttermilk biscuit. This is the perfect all American meal served with a smile. Penny’s All American Café is located at 1053 Price Street in Pismo Beach.

#2 The Grill at The Cass House A Sunday afternoon is a day meant for stumbling into treasures of food and wine. No better place to stagger than the Grill at Cass House. Sit at the open counter that encircled the outdoor grill. Masterly designed by executive chef Cory Bidwell, it’s a testament to chef ingenuity and community spirit. The Market Artichoke is grilled, salted and served with herbed butter turning this flower into an extraordinary event. The pièce de résistance came in a butter slathered toasted milk bread that was cut down the middle. It is filled with huge chunks of Maine lobster, a tad of celery salt, mayonnaise and celery, it is then topped with radish sprouts and pickled onion. This was a surprise in texture and the large chunks of lobster whose flavor was not lost, but enhanced by the combinations. This was a culinary work of art. The Grill is located at 222 North Ocean Avenue in Cayucos.

#1 The Spoon Trade, Grover Beach Perfection, every time. Comfort food served by an extraordinary chef using only farm fresh items and an outstanding staff. It is affordable gourmet food. The Tri Tip Tartar will blow your mind. It is Neiman Ranch beef chopped by the chef and topped with a tonnato sauce. It was tender and savory, and served with grilled sourdough bread. The Fried Chicken and Waffles are the reason most people dine there almost every night. Four pieces of buttermilk soaked and fried chicken pieces with the slightest drizzle of infused honey on top and roasted rosemary all accompanied by sourdough waffles and spicy kimchee. This is a religious experience. The Spoon Trade is located at 295 Grand Avenue in Grover Beach.

La Vida Roca L

a Vida Roca is an upscale Mexican Restaurant & Cantina that serves authentic Mexican food and traditional seafood, great Margarita’s, ice-cold beer served in frosty mugs and select wines. Owners Jim Tolle and Jerry Morfin have made it their mission to provide a Mexican Rivera dining experience to all in Morro Bay. With their unique flavors, an incredible roof top view, and a staff dedicated to ensuring your dining experience is special, customers should feel like they are on the western coast of Mexico either dining on a cruise ship or sitting in a high-end restaurant. Their unique recipes and dedication to providing customers with flavors they haven’t experienced before is what sets them apart from the rest.

Although they have only been open since December of 2015, La Vida Roca has already gained quite a following. The Chile Verde has become a huge hit with many of their customers, often called “The best Chile Verde I’ve ever had.” The Roca Clam Chowder has taken off in a major way as well. Unlike another typical clam chowder, it is made with a Mexican flare! It is served either in a cup, a bowl or, their most popular, Twice Baked Bread Bowl! After many suggestions from customers La Vida Roca has entered in the Pismo Beach Clam Chowder Contest, where they will go up against many local favorites. Their seafood plates, like the Roca Clam Chowder, are made to stand out against the norm. The Fish N Chips batter is made in house with ingredients you can’t really put your finger on

but the result is something that really makes the flavor “pop.” There is shrimp available in a bounty of flavors including Garlic Shrimp, Shrimp on Fire, Shrimp in a Blanket, Shrimp Enchiladas, and many other dishes. They love to cook with shrimp and have found spices and sauces that will make any shrimp lovers taste buds come alive.

Of course, the traditional Mexican plates are always a hit, Menudo, Pozole, Albondigas, 7 Seas Soup and sizzling Fajitas are just a few of the dishes at La Vida Roca. The portions are huge; most customers walk out with take away containers. And, don’t forget the incredible view, from either the inside of the dining area or out on the patio. Roof top views offer customers a view right on the waterfront where they can sit back and watch the Bay. In the near future, La Vida Roca will offer breakfast 6 days a week and on Sunday a Mimosa Sunday Brunch. La Vida Roca is located at 725 Embarcadero, Morro Bay.

Moroccan Chicken Tagine 1 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped pinch saffron strands ½ onion, chopped 8 garlic cloves, peeled 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, toasted & ground 4 whole cardamom pods, remove seeds, toasted & ground (discard shells) ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ cup cracked green olives 1 preserved lemon in sections, pulp

Marinade: Mix cilantro, cinnamon, saffron, salt, onion, garlic, cumin, cardamom and ginger in a medium bowl. Smash garlic cloves gently and add 2 cups water. Mix well. Rinse chicken pieces, dry and add to marinade. Refrigerate covered for 2 hours or more. Preheat oven to 375°. Remove chicken pieces from marinade and set marinade aside. Blot the chicken dry and season with salt and pepper. Heat 1-teaspoon vegetable oil in large fry pan and brown chicken on both sides until golden but not cooked through.

Place chicken pieces in tagine; pour marinade over chicken. Cover and bake chicken for 45 minutes. Add olives and preserved lemon and cook for an additional 15 minutes. Let rest until slightly cooler to remove the tagine lid. Open the top so that the steam escapes away from you. Remove the chicken to a platter and keep warm. Pour the liquid into a small saucepan and heat to a slow boil. Let it cook down to thicken. (Add thickening agent if needed) Serve over couscous.

8 chicken thighs with skin and bones (or combination of breasts & thighs)

Family Business Matters

G

rocery Outlet is known for offering extreme bargains for customers. The company buys surplus product from suppliers and passes the savings, averaging between 40% and 60%, along to the customer. SLO Grocery Outlet sells refrigerated and frozen foods, fresh produce, meat, organic and natural foods, dry groceries, beer and wine, as well as household, seasonal items, and health and beauty products. Ryan and Shannon became owners of Grocery Outlet after both had long careers in the corporate grocery industry. While they enjoyed their careers, their true desire was to have the opportunity to own a family business where they could live and work, be involved in the community, and fill a need. Grocery Outlet was a perfect fit. “It was very important for us as a family, to be able to live and work in the same community,” said Shannon. “We both had to commute before so we didn’t necessarily get to enjoy the ‘connection’ with the communities that we worked in. That is different here in SLO. We know our neighbors. Also, each of our children is involved in the business in one way or another. It really is special for us. “SLO is perfect. The entire area is very communityminded. We are able to be involved in so many things that are important to us. We volunteer at the schools, we work with the food bank and different charities. We sponsor activities. For us, being here and owning the store is about so much more than business.”

Ryan added, “Owning our store and being here is SLO is awesome. We get to know and build relationships with our customers, employees and vendors. In the corporate grocery industry that wasn’t happening for us anymore, and we really missed it. Everything became numbers and spreadsheets, the human element has begun to disappear.” While extreme deals are available throughout the store every day, NOSH, which stands for Natural, Organic, Specialty and Healthy, Wine and Produce are departments that customers at SLO Grocery Outlet seem to be the most impressed with and find the greatest deals over the conventional grocery chains. “Nobody should have to overpay for their groceries,” said Ryan. “NOSH, wine and produce are huge draws for our customers and the savings really are significant, sometimes the savings even surprise us.”

Shopping is a slightly different experience at Grocery Outlet.

“We like to tell people that shopping our store is like a treasure hunt” said Shannon. “We may not have everything on your list today, but what we do have will save you a lot of money. We encourage everyone to shop here first and save money. Also, if you find something you really like, get more than one, we may not get it again. We are just like an outlet mall in that sense.”

Ryan and Shannon Parrish are the owners of the San Luis Obispo Grocery Outlet located at 1314 Madonna Rd. in the Laguna Village Shopping Center. fall 2016

Take a drive to Montana de Oro in Los Osos for a trail ride across the breathtakingly beautiful state park with Central Coast Trail Rides. Continue on to San Simeon to the Piedras Blancas Rookery to view the elephant seals in the winter for the pupping and mating season and in the late spring and early summer during their molting season. A Day of Play at SLO Makerspace By Courtney Haile Photos by Molly Kiely

W

e play to enjoy and amuse ourselves and sometimes that means tinkering, fiddling, building, and making. Whether you’ve carefully planned a project requiring a power saw or industrial sewing machine, or you just like to use your hands and play with clay, San Luis Obispo has a space where you belong.

Founded in 2014, SLO Makerspace is part machine and tool shop, part classroom, and all community. It is an open, collaborative space led by a board of directors and staffed with technical gurus, where members have 24/7 access to tools and machines I didn’t know existed. Non-members, like me, can take classes in the workshop’s certification areas such as 3D printing, lampworking, welding, and my new hobby: laser cutting and engraving.

36

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast

The laser cutting and engraving machine at SLO Makerspace, one of the only publicly accessible machines in SLO, uses a 100-watt laser to cut into or engrave on wood, leather, stone, acrylic, cardboard, glass, fabric, and more to create new or personalize existing items. Projects begin on a computer with special software, and end with your design carved or cut onto almost anything. One could beautify a cell phone case they already own or make a handy mousepad or keychain from scratch. You may even become so skilled that you can sell your products, like Kevin of Zen Laser Collective who is one of nine entrepreneurs who rent a SLO Makerspace booth. If technical jargon and safety goggles make you nervous, you can rest easy for there are helpful hands. Enter the guru: there is a staff member for each certification area of the workshop, and they not only teach classes, but are available to advise you once you’re ready to begin a project.

A Cal Poly grad in microbiology, Laser Guru Lauren firmly believes in her alma mater’s learn by doing philosophy. A woodworker from a young age, Lauren originally came to SLO Makerspace because she needed access to a saw. She took to the lasers quickly; teaching classes to pay for her Makerspace membership before recently becoming a paid staff member. continued, page 38

Lauren, who advises to be skeptical of yourself and skeptical of the equipment, had me attempt every step of the process during the hands-on class. She believes it takes four hours to get acquainted with the laser cutter and engraver. Two hours in class, plus one to get it wrong and one to get it right. I was pleased to know there is space to get it wrong. There is a sense of curiosity, questioning, and wonder in this space where you’re encouraged to figure stuff out while you work.

We began at the machine, creating a sample that displayed how the various laser settings and strengths translated onto my chosen material--a thin piece of scrap wood. Once we moved on to the computer the process crystalized. I tell the computer what to do, and then it tells the machine what to do— that’s all! Due to the high power output of the laser cutter and engraver, the SLO Makerspace charges 50 cents a minute, which is paid using the honor system. The software estimates how long your project will take, and the community members trust one another to pay their fair share. I left with my very own laser crafted SLO Makerspace keychain.

38

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast

The question is, must I become a member to use my new skill?

Everyone with a SLO County Library card, after passing the basic safety course, has free access the workshop for up to 15 hours a week. The program has introduced new faces and projects that expand and deepen the community. Some folks may zone in on their own projects with their headphones on, Lauren explained, but others might approach a new maker about his process and methods. This is the communal aspect Lauren enjoys most.

If a technical class isn’t your cup of tea, you can drop in for an actual cup of tea at their Wednesday night Sip and Sketch -- or if you prefer Thursdays and sewing you can Stitch n’ Bitch! These free programs, along with their kids’ night and upcoming Clay Play, are just some of the numerous opportunities available. If you’re looking for a different way to play, learn more at slomakerspace.com. SLO Makerspace is located at 81 Higuera St #160, San Luis Obispo. Courtney Haile is a writer and adventure seeker living in San Luis Obispo.

Just the Two of Us Day S

leep in! Start your day enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Morro Bay Harbor with a late morning champagne brunch at the Inn at Morro Bay’s 60 State Park Restaurant and Lounge. Then grab a beach blanket and head to the Embarcadero to visit Sub Sea Tours and Kayaks. Rent a couple of kayaks and get up close and personal with the sea life on your way across the bay to the Sand Spit. Lay your blanket on the sand and share some cuddles and kisses while enjoying the views of the sun bathing otters and sea lions. After you’ve washed away the sea, stop by Morro Bay Wine Seller to relax and taste local, regional, and international wines while munching on their variety of cheeses, and chocolates. For dinner, grab a table for two at Off the Hook, and watch the sunset over The Rock as you delight in some of the county’s best cuisine. If you still have some energy after your meal, check out The Libertine Pub for a locally crafted beer and dance the night away to the sounds of a live band.

get cooking

Curried Squash and Cauliflower Soup 2 tablespoons olive oil

1 large onion, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, minced

1 head cauliflower, trimmed and cut into florets ½ Kabocha squash, peeled and cut into 2” chunks 4 ½ cups low-sodium vegetable broth (or water, or combination of both) ½ teaspoon coriander ½ teaspoon turmeric 1 ¼ teaspoon cumin 1 cup coconut milk

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Heat oil in a large pot over medium-low heat until shimmering. Cook the onions and ½ teaspoon salt until onions are soft and translucent, 8-9 minutes. Do not brown. Reduce heat to low, add garlic and cook for 2 additional minutes. Add cauliflower, squash, broth, coriander, turmeric, cumin and ¼ teaspoon salt. Bring pot to a boil over medium-high heat; then reduce to low. Simmer until cauliflower and squash are fork-tender, about 15-17 minutes. Working in batches puree the soup in a blender until smooth, then return the soup to the soup pot. Stir in the coconut milk and warm the soup. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

To serve, ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with a handful of toasted cashews, parsley, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes and a drizzle of walnut oil on top.

egin the day with a cool country hike along the Johnson Ranch Trail, then head in to Pismo Beach for an Old West Cinnamon Roll. Travel a little further to Avila Bay Drive and go for a swim at Avila Hot Springs. In the afternoon, take a leisurely bicycle ride along the shady Bob Jones Trail into the town of Avila where you can grab a cone of Doc Burnstein’s salted caramel ice cream at the Hula Hut. Finish the day with dinner at the Olde Port Inn on Harford Pier, soaking in the sunset and harbor views.
