day, but their spiritual successors have certainly been busy. The non-profit group Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers, took responsibility for restoration of the Victorian-style original lighthouse and surviving outbuildings in 1995. are no longer responsible for scrambling to the top of the tower, attached to what was the head-keeper’s family home, and resetting the timing clockwork or lighting any lamps. The original Fresnel lens now resides in the concrete floored building, which used to be home to massive machinery, and a furnace that burned 97 tones of coal to keep the foghorn blaring. The need to keep all that explosive fuel onsite dimmed with the arrival of air compressors in 1907, and later, reliable electricity to power operations. The modern equivalent is an LED-beacon the size of a coffee can, that emits timed light pulses at night, joined by an array of microwave antennas to beam navigational data to ships at sea – and to Vandenberg Air Force Base, mum’s the word. To commemorate 125 years, volunteer docents got into their best turn-of-the-20th Century attire for weekend tours. Embodying the roles of the three keepers who lived on-site 365 days a year — six if you count the wives who kept everything running despite not being on the official payroll — the event was the first time the costumes have been worn at the site since the era when they were normal attire.

It’s one of many firsts since Lighthouse Keepers’ Executive Director, Kristi Balzer, came aboard 5-years ago. It’s also a little bittersweet. As of Aug. 28, Balzer is no longer with the organization, but she’ll carry many fond memories to her next home in Portland, Ore. “Kristi has done such an incredible job and we’re so sad to see her go,” said president of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Board of Directors, John Lindsey. “With her work and all of the dedicated volunteers, things have blossomed there in the last few years.” Among the changes that helps the organization keep working has been the “exponential growth” in the number of visitors taking a trolley ride and guided tour through the property — growing from 180 a month to 800 in August. “The trolley has really become our bread and butter,” said Balzer, adding that recent improvements to the accessibility of the site for events are allowing them to book more weddings and occasional nighttime events outdoors. She’s also particularly proud of educational programs bringing out local fourth graders, and a brand new promotional video being produced with an eye towards historical education in general. “I just always encourage the public to come out here and experience their lighthouse,” she said. “It’s been a wonderful opportunity for me to be a part of and I’m so thankful that this is available for people to witness.” Since 1992, the Point San Luis Lighthouse has been owned

by the Port San Luis Harbor District, leading to occasional confusion over the name. The 30-acre site was gifted by the Federal Government, with the requirement that the station be restored and opened to the public. As Lindsey, who also the resident meteorologist for PG&E at the nearby Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, points out, much of what goes on at the Lighthouse is in collaboration with the District, with PG&E and with the educational programs at the Central Coast Aquarium on Avila Beach Drive. Revealing Morro Bay’s Old Town
O
nce you discover Morro Bay’s Old Town you will want to make a return trip! Most of the retail shops and restaurants in the area are local owner-operated small businesses, so as you wander through town you will find opportunities you don’t usually see in a bigger city.
“What customers tell me is that Morro Bay has that small town coziness from times past,” said Susan Stewart, owner of Beads By the Bay and current president of the Morro Bay Merchants Association. “I’ll sometimes hear we are a town that time forgot, but that really means we have history. I like to say we are a casual and friendly beach town, a place you can have fine dining in blue jeans, and watch your fresh fish being offloaded at the working waterfront. Visitors can expect a place to relax and stroll far away from freeways, big box and chain stores and crowds.”

Eclectic and authentic might describe the variety of storefronts available in the easily walk-able business district on and nearby Main Street and Morro Bay Blvd. Antiques and collectibles featuring furniture, jewelry, toys, clothing and kitchenware can be found at numerous shops. Among the clothing shops, vintage Texas-style and Tony Lama boots are signature products for one Main Street clothier while the newest in Hawaiian Aloha-style shirts can be found next to the iconic Bay Theater, which shows first run movies and still sells tickets, popcorn and sodas at throw-back prices. Memorial Day to mid-October the City of Morro Bay operates three routed trolleys with drivers trained to know the business district. But if you need to work out and/or de-stress there are two gyms and at least three Yoga centers.
“For a city of just over 10,000, we’re proud to have restaurants that feature a wide variety of cuisine,” Stewart said. “In Morro Bay you can get anything from great barbecue to fish and chips, a fresh gourmet seafood dinner or Italian, Thai, sushi, pizza and more. We have a great vegan restaurant next to a health food store that even non-vegans enjoy! There are several independent coffee shops that open early and roast their own coffees. Community Markets are held Saturdays from 2 p.m. to dusk. Each August and November, the Morro Bay Merchants Association holds a street fair inviting additional merchants to offer their unique crafts and goods.
Still a mixed c o m m e r c i a l / residential area, many of the storefronts maintain lush hidden gardens for customers to enjoy, including two of the coffee shops, the wedding chapel gardens behind the independent bookstore, and the retail nursery with garden and pond behind Stewart’s bead shop.
Although not officially an historic district, Old Town has a fascinating history. Read all about it at the newly renovated Morro Bay Library next to the Visitor Center/Chamber of Commerce where pre-arranged walking tours by members of the Historical Society of Morro Bay can be scheduled. Or if it’s local gossip you
prefer and you need a haircut or a perm, schedule some talk time at the salon or tiny but mighty old-fashioned barbershop.
Be sure and check the events’ schedule for a variety of activities that feature Morro Bay’s Old Town. You might want to book now for May 5-8, 2016. Registrations are filling up for the family & dogfriendly 20th Annual Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show with more than 500 classic cars lining the streets, an American Graffiti Cruise Night around several blocks in Old Town and even an old fashioned ice cream social. Expect the focus and fun to be about the amazing cars on display, but with Morro Bay’s own community radio station, 97.3 The ROCK, dancing in the streets would not be unusual. www.morrobaycarshow.org.

n the 1950s Pismo Beach embraced the status of “Clam Capital of the World.” Families and beach revelers by the thousands flocked to the beach with buckets and shovels to harvest clams at low tide then feast on everything from chowder to clam bakes. The clams are not as plentiful today, but Pismo Beach still celebrates their heritage at October’s Clam Festival and takes pride in being a classic beach community offering visitors much to see and do.

While Pismo Beach offers beach-play, watersports, kiteflying, or simply strolling on its expansive white sand beach, the community plans visitor-friendly special events all year long. Most activities happen on or near the iconic Pismo Pier. The white-railed wooden pier juts out 1,370-feet into the Pacific

Numerous beachside hotels and restaurants are sprinkled throughout the cycling and pedestrian-friendly city. Besides the award-winning chowder at Splash Café, cuisine is varied from fine dining at Rosa’s Italian Restaurant and Cracked Crab to casual fare at Mo’s Smokehouse BBQ and long-time family-owned Brad’s Restaurant. Steamers of Pismo hosts noontime meetings of the Pismo/Five Cities Rotary Club each Tuesday and on Thursdays the Rotary Club of Arroyo Grande. The SeaVenture Beach Resort and Restaurant might be the pick stay during the Clam Festival with Chef Casey Walcott cooking up a traditional clam bake in nearby sandpits.

Restaurants
with an Ocean View by Teri Bayus
W
hen I first moved here, I was mesmerized with the plethora of eating establishments that overlooked the ocean. I hailed from the desert and was fascinated that you could dine in the sunshine saturated afternoon, waves pounding below, for just the cost of the meal. I went on a quest for the superlative seaside feasting, and discovered that most restaurants that had a spectacular view lacked the culinary expertise I desired. However, there are still a lot to choose from. I whittled down my list of the best restaurants overlooking our magnificent ocean to the top ten.
#10 Ventana Grill, Pismo Beach
Along with the stunning view of the ocean, Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach boasts a beautiful dining room with an array of lights, water, and nature. The food is called Coastal Fusion, with a variety of dishes from coastal places including Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and California. Ventana Grill prepares its unique fare with the freshest, highest quality ingredients available. Using choice cuts of steak, seafood, and other meats that are tender and flavorful, imparting substance and robustness into every dish. Salsas and sauces are made daily from scratch and showcase bright green herbs and perfect blends of sweet, spicy, salty, and savory. If you’re looking for something hearty and casual, or a meal that is as delicate as it is elegant, Ventana Grill’s menu has the dish to satisfy your cravings. Located at 2575 Price Street in Pismo Beach, (805) 773-0000.
#9 Sea Chest, Cambria
The Sea Chest Oyster Bar and Restaurant has been serving fresh seafood for more than thirty years. Locals have always enjoyed sitting at the bar, attempting to break the “most eaten” oyster challenge chatting with entertaining chefs while the dinner is prepared exhibition style. The Sea Chest is full of Tritons specialties. John D’s Oysters Rockefeller, Steamed Clams, and fresh New Zealand Mussels are just a few of the favorite appetizers. The entrees offer a varied selection of the freshest fish available. The house Cioppino and

Panko Crusted Calamari Steak are some of the highlights. Neither credit cards nor reservations are accepted. This culinary delight is worth a trip to the ATM and the line. The Sea Chest Restaurant and Oyster Bar is located at 6216 Moonstone Beach Drive, Cambria, (805) 927-4514.
#8 Old Port Inn, Avila Beach
At the last pier (Hanford) in Avila Beach a restaurant situated at the end of a 100 year old structure, Old Port Inn. The tables, covered in glass, look down through the pier into the ocean. The seal lions bark and pelicans swoop as you make your way down the pier. This restaurant is resting on the ocean, so the sailboats sway and the sea life jumps inches from the windows. Come in for a sourdough roll and bowl of clam chowder, stay for the fish tacos. With the fish just pulled from the sea specifically large chunks of rock cod, a dollop of spicy guacamole, cheese, salsa, cabbage and cilantro this is perfection in a tortilla. Other delights include Cioppino, whom fans know that the sauce makes or breaks this dish. It includes shrimp, squid, rock cod, and scallops, served in a tomato seafood stew with onions, leeks, and chopped parsley, no hunks of garlic bread or claws of crab to disturb the dish. They serve casual seafood, with daily specials to feature their catches of the day. Piers like this that are as historic as they are well loved, they remind you that not all beach dwellers are millionaires, that not all foods need Michelin stars. Old Port Inn is located at 3993 Avila Beach Drive, Avila Beach, (805) 595-2515.
#7 Schooners W ha r f , Cayucos
The heated patio is rustic, the view spectacular, and the food inspired. Schooner’s menu features fresh seafood and steaks that are prepared
thoughtfully. Start with Schooner’s Legendary Calamari, a title that lived up to its exposition. A large calamari steak is pounded into rareness, breaded in panko and deep friend. It is cut into strips and offered with a tangy cocktail sauce, house made tartar and lemon wedges. An exceptional dish that boasts the honor of the “Best Calamari Steak”. Schooner’s has captured the essence of the sea in the Pecan Crusted Halibut with a dijon cream sauce, seasonal veggies and garlic mashed potatoes. Their Fish ‘N Chips also won crowed approval with the Alaskan Pollock dipped in a draft beer batter and deep fried to a crispy golden brown. The beer batter chips were fantastic. Schooner’s Bar has exotic drinks like Mai Tais and Cayucos Beach Ale. They have been offering guests an unforgettable dining experience since 1993. Located at 171 N. Ocean Avenue, Cayucos, (805) 995-3883.
#6 Off The Hook, Morro Bay
Start with the oyster shooters full of Morro Bay oysters served in a shot glass swimming in cold sake, ponzu, sriracha and diced green onions. You can never go wrong with Morro Bay oysters and the flavors burst thru this simply wonderful shot. Try the Sashimi bites, as each was fresh and full of the sea essence. A plate of Ahi Tuna, Ono (a white tuna), local Salmon, Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Albacore, Scallop and Taco (Octopus) were shared and each bite was expertly prepared and presented. Chef suggested trying some of their creative Rolls Of The Coast, a more American style of sushi. The Oregon Blaze Roll with its spicy tuna, jalapeno and cucumber inside rolled into a rice blanket and covered with Cajun albacore with an Asian green chili sauce, earned its name and the blaze was put out with another round of sake. This amalgamation of flavors was delightful and surprising. Off The Hook Seafood Grill and Sushi Bar is located at 833 Embarcadero, Morro Bay, (805) 772-5777.

#5 Windows On The Water, Morro Bay Windows On The Water is considered one of the finest dinning establishments and they deserve the title. They have won every local award including best restaurant and even gained national attention. First, there is not a bad seat in the whole restaurant as the tides of Morro Bay ebb and flow as you are dining on the inhabitants recently plucked from its waters. Second, it is hands down the best service anywhere. Start with raw oysters, Blue Points, Morro Bay, Coromandel, and Hood Canal. Each brand extraordinary, but the subtleties came out with a squeeze of lemon juice and a dab of hot sauce. The Dungeness Crab Cake is deliciously prepared with fresh crab, jalapeno aioli and lemon vinaigrette. The Ocean Rose Abalone is locally raised, pounded to softness, and heaped on a Japanese cucumber and seaweed salad with wasabi, yuzu tobikos, and sweet soya. All exceptional. The Hawaiian albacore “Tataki Style” (seared rare) with purple sticky rice, sesame asparagus, and cucumber salad that was so perfectly prepared even the tuna was happy. The Local Sand Dabs were expertly arranged with a light fry and crispy potato cake, wilted spinach with a lemon-garlic-caper butter. Windows on the Water features a menu that changes with the seasons, benefiting from local fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, and herbs. The extensive wine list highlights many local wines, as well as renowned French vintages. Impeccable service, amazing views and awarding winning recipes. Windows on the Water is located at 699 Embarcadero, Morro Bay, (805) 772-0677.
#4 Marisol, Pismo Beach
The best way to spend your weekend is sitting in the sun on the deck absorbing tequila and taking in the breathtaking sights. Located in posh Shell Beach, this stunning restaurant not only features incredible ocean views, fun happy hours, but also an extraordinary restaurant. They have a tremendous menu with original offerings using

the area’s freshest and preeminent produce and proteins. With the sweeping backdrops of the waves rolling in, the sun setting in a Technicolor display that made the ambiance resonate. The soulful sweet sound of an acoustic guitar surrounded us through a masterful sound system. Manager, David Kline set us with menus and a delightful quip as the sun set. The menu held a wide variety to keep everyone happy; fish, steak, sandwiches, salads and wraps all impressive as the sight waves breaking down below.
The service was impeccable, the food outstanding. Marisol has it all, a lively bar, and beautiful views of the ocean. Marisol is located at the Cliff’s Hotel at 2757 Shell Beach Road, Pismo Beach, (805) 773-2511.
#3 Lido in Dolphin bay
With spectacular views, unequaled wait staff and a touch of panache rarely seen in these parts, Lido is a place to impress. Executive Chef Jacob Moss is a master culinary architect. From Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena to Restaurant Rossini in Florence, Italy to Head Chef with the Rizzo family at Café Roma to Lido, he paves a swath of unparalleled talents. He shares the philosophy of creating an innovative menu with locally grown, organic food. Start with the Cayucos Abalone and Crispy Pork Belly. The abalone is sitting on a bed of crispy pork belly with a brown butter and ginger that broke out the compliments. Every bite was perfection and a Meyer lemon sauce made this as delicious as it was beautiful. Don’t miss the Seared Dayboat Sea Scallops, three large mollusks scorched impeccably sitting on wilted market baby kales and topped with a crispy, translucent house made Pancetta. Try the Seared Ahi with roasted beets, tempura asparagus and the signature salsa verde. The Lido Restaurant is located inside Dolphin Bay Resort at 2727 Shell Beach Road in Pismo Beach, (805) 773.9800.
#2 60 State Park Restaurant and Lounge, Morro Bay
Chef Steven Smeets now sentinels over the helm of one of the best views and romantic restaurants. Their halibut and mushroom ravioli is a favorite with superb swordfish, steak and lamb. The service was impeccable, and the view of the best on the coast. The restaurant is updated and in menu and
furnishings, but the most impressive addition is the chef. This innovative dining destination showcases the fresh seafood, colorful produce, and world-class wine of the region. Savor an unforgettable meal along with postcard-perfect views of the bay. Located inside the Inn At Morro Bay, 60 State Park Rd, Morro Bay, (805) 772-2238
#1 SeaVenture, Pismo Beach
In the past, many of my after-work hours had been spent sitting at the Sea Venture watching the waves roll in, surfers float and the sun set. Meet here for Mai Tai’s for Sunday brunches or just to impress an out of town guest. While the bar boasts the best tapa’s menu, the restaurant has at its helm one of the best and brightest chefs in the area, Casey Walcott. Large Seared Bacon Wrapped Scallops sitting atop fried Brussels sprouts with a delectable lemon aioli and goat cheese spread around the plate for visual stimulation as well as palate pleasing, are a must. The scallops were bigger than a silver dollar in size and perfectly cooked with the essence of the sea shining thru the crispiness of the bacon. The best is a subtlety delectable Lobster Vol-en-Vent (French for everything is better between puff pastry). This amazing shell shaped and multi layered tartlet was swollen with sautéed lobster, grilled asparagus and cubes of fingerling potato, it sat upon a cloud of lobster cream sauce and green onions. Every bite was perfect and rich creating a harmonious experience. It was absolute flawlessness. The Sea Venture Resort Restaurant is located at 100 Ocean View Avenue in Pismo Beach, (805) 773-3463 Teri Bayus is the Host of Taste Buds, shown on Charter Channel 10 and on Central Coast Now.TV Teri’s Culinary Erotic Book, Consumed is available at http://www.amazon.com/ConsumedTeri-Bayus-ebook/dp/B016DW85PA

Spring Clean & Organize I
n a sense, organization actually reveals our value system, which we are, hopefully, passing on to our children. When we live in a well-organized space, the ensuing orderliness creates calm, serenity and a sense of security. These lead to greater mental clarity, patience, creativity and spontaneity. Clearly, all of our daily lives will benefit from these characteristics being enhanced. This spring, let’s begin in the garage since this is how we usually enter our homes. Stowing the oversized packages of paper towels and detergent, etc. as well as cleaning supplies here is best. Home maintenance provisions and tools call for strong shelving. Out of season clothing as well as seasonal decorations need a place. Sporting equipment and larger toys should be kept out of the house and out from under foot. Tools used for repairs and yard work can be stored here so they are easily accessed when needed. Cabinets and racks for all these uses are readily available. Next, inside the house, let’s tackle the closets. You may have a coat closet near the front door, which can be refitted with double hang for jackets. Add a few shelves for hats, walking shoes, etc. and you’re in better shape here. Now for the bedroom closets—if you can’t walk in and find the components of your outfit and matching shoes quickly and with ease, your closets need attention! The greatest invention in closets is ‘doublehang’, (over-and –under hanging). As most of us dress in ‘separates,’ double hang works well for all ages. If your bedrooms are too small to accommodate dressers, a few drawers in the closet for underwear and pajamas is a good idea. When the laundry room is not near at hand, a tilt out hamper below a stack of drawers provides for your needs. Finally, shelves for folded clothing and shoes are a must. It really helps to get those shoes up off the floor where you can see them! Lastly, you need a place to keep records, pay bills, do homework and perhaps, even make a living. A spare bedroom is a wonderful place for these needs. This room could also function as a craft room/art studio or guest room with good planning. A well38 101 WAYS TO PLAY on the central coast
organized office will go a long way to keeping all of you on an even keel and the clutter down in the rest of the house. With a little thought and planning, the atmosphere of the family home can be greatly enhanced through well- organized storage solutions. As one happy parent said, “Coastal Dance and Music is the most professional, nurturing dance studio I have ever known! All the instructors are educated, talented and excellent! They know how to support students of all ages and abilities! This organization is family centered and completely user-friendly!” With over 90 classes in dance, theater, voice and music each week, CDMA gives families multiple choices and the ability to fulfill the whole families performing arts training in one convenient location. Classes are on-going and range from beginning toddler classes through advanced levels for experienced performing artists. Private lessons are also offered in each of the disciplines, as well as multiple performance opportunities. Yearly performances include the more intimate winter and spring recitals for theater, voice and music students and the annual studio showcase in June in Harmon Hall at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo, featuring all of CDMA’s very talented performers. The experience of performing is rewarding for CDMA students as well as parents. “We just had the incredible experience of participating in the annual studio showcase and could not have been more pleased. From the rehearsal to the actual performances, everything was planned and executed seamlessly. The shows ran so smoothly and were so entertaining. We were also so impressed with how comfortable classes of toddlers were who participated in such a big event!” For those hooked on performing, CDMA’s dance companies Dance Out Loud for ages 6-13
and Synergy for teens provides the serious dance student with a more rigorous training schedule and multiple performing opportunities throughout the state. In addition, CDMA is home to Coastal Chamber Youth Ballet and Coastal Youth Theater, two non-profit companies whose mission is to create exceptional performing arts experiences for local youth. Summer brings special opportunities for CDMA students to take classes, camps and intensives from guest instructors, many of who are professionals in their fields. Broadway choreographer Matt Williams will put students through the paces of a Broadway performer in his Musical Theater Camp for ages 8-15 the week of July 11-15. Ballet Intensive’s for both intermediate and advanced dancers are offered July 18-22 and 25-29 and are an opportunity for dancers to learn from former New York City Ballet soloist, Jennifer Tinsley-Williams. If you love to sing, Broadway Choir Camp the week of August 1-5 for ages 8-13 will fit the bill and for the younger set, there is Jedi Training Camp and Preschool Princess camp. Throughout the year, Coastal Dance and Music Academy creates the perfect environment for the arts to flourish, as this parent so aptly states: “I highly recommend CDMA! The owners, instructors, and staff are talented and dedicated and the studio is beautiful. It is a wonderful environment for the students to grow and learn.” If you would like the opportunity to explore your creative side, or expose your child to the benefits of the performing arts, which fosters selfesteem, discipline, creativity, and self-confidence, CDMA is the place for you. You’ll feel like you’ve come home the moment you step in the door. Call 805-489-5678 for a free trial class, visit the website for more information www. CoastalDanceandMusicAcademy.com, or stop by 1030 Huston Street, Suite C, Grover Beach for your personal tour. spring 2016

Sleep Under the Stars, Connect with Nature, Be Creative
Camp Natoma Celebrates 75 Years
C
amp Natoma is a long-standing tradition in San Luis Obispo County that has operated since 1941 on 360 pristine oakstudded acres in the Adelaida District area of Paso Robles. Owned and operated by Camp Fire Central Coast of California, a non-profit youth development organization, Camp Natoma welcomes boys and girls, first through eleventh grades to its overnight camp program. Each session is six nights and six days and includes nutritious meals and snacks a commemorative t-shirt, all activities, and transportation. Unlike other camps, at Camp Natoma everyone sleeps outside on cots in groups organized by age and gender and supervised by trained staff. Campers sleep under the stars, explore the natural world, make new friends, express their creativity and become part of a caring community. Each day they participate in age appropriate outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, archery, arts & crafts, nature exploration, drama, music, geocaching, outdoor skills, games and more. Evenings include an entertaining and interactive campfire program. Campers, parents and staff report that perhaps one of the greatest aspects about attending Camp Natoma is being outside all week, unplugged from technology and immersed in nature. In our fast-paced, technology-centered world, camp can be a respite for kids on screen time overload. In the book Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv describes the modern child’s experience as one that may cause nature deficit disorder, or behavioral and developmental problems due to lack of time in the natural world. Camp Natoma provides campers with time for unstructured play in natural settings - an oak forest and Franklin creek. This outdoor experience enriches a child’s perception of the world, invigorates the senses and sparks curiosity. Campers often refer to Camp Natoma has their second home. The community and unique traditions make it a welcoming environment for all kids. A highly qualified and trained staff guide campers in teambuilding activities, facilitate new friendships, and support opportunities for gains in self-reliance and selfconfidence.
Camp Natoma is accredited by the American Camp Association. It’s important for families to know that, just like schools, camps can become accredited, which validates a program’s high standards for safety and camp operations. Standards for accreditation include the hiring process, staff background checks and training, inspection of campground facilities, healthcare policies and procedures, program content and more. To learn more about camp safety standards and find resources for parents, visit www.acacamps.org. Additionally, Camp Natoma has earned the Markel Insurance Safety 1st designation for proven safety record. Youth can gain important life skills and improve their well being through an overnight summer camp experience. At camp, kids are active all day - hiking, swimming, running, climbing, playing. Camp helps kids build self-confidence and self-reliance through non-competitive activities, a diverse community for teamwork, and competent, caring role models. Teens who have completed grade 10 or 11 can participate in a leadership program, an opportunity to discover their strengths and learn and practice leadership techniques. It’s easy to register for Camp Natoma—no prior camping experience is needed and new campers are always welcome. To enroll, visit www.campnatoma.org and click on registration. Camp Natoma alumni are invited to celebrate 75 years of summer fun at two special events in 2016. On June 5 there will be a dinner fundraiser at Cass Winery. For those who want to sleep under the stars, a special two-night alumni camp will be held August 5-7. Tickets are available online or by calling 805709-2569. spring 2016

30 Years & Still Swinging
he Schaffer family – Jake and Sharyn and their sons, Lance and Todd – are celebrating thirty years of success and heartfelt pleasure helping golfers better their game. In other words, thirty years of personalized service by the owners of Roger Dunn Golf Shop Arroyo Grande outfitting “boys and girls with their golf toys.” On August 1, 1986, they moved from Wisconsin, where they were in the grocery business, to California to open a golf franchise well known for specializing in the latest and best in golf equipment. Their decision was influenced by a casual conversation between Jake and his cousin Mark Stirle, who owned a successful Roger Dunn Golf Shop in Riverside, CA. “The closest store to our location in Arroyo Grande was in Ventura,” said Lance. “San Luis golfers were waiting for us. It was amazing. I was 21 and took a break from the University of Wisconsin to come out with Dad to open the store. We’d finish measuring one person and another was waiting.” After Todd finished high school, he and Sharyn joined them in California. Noting the family never looked back, Jake said, “People are a whole lot happier buying what they want than what they need.” Over the past three decades they have witnessed an industry evolution of products that has allowed them to expand their personalized service to customized service. “Today the balls are more durable and accurate, the bags are lighter, the golf-ware stylish – in fact, cleats are made to adapt to favorite name brand shoes,” Lance said. In 2016 the shop’s secret to customization has been the addition of an in-store computer simulator that demonstrates a customer’s swing style. The computer will measure a variety of details based on a test swing by the customer. Lance or Todd will

then select the best golf club to complement an individual’s golf play. “Customers walk out of the store with confidence that their new clubs will match their style of golfing,” said Todd. “They don’t have to guess if the club will work for them because a pro golfer pitched it on television.” Roger Dunn Golf Shop Arroyo Grande has always catered to the informed golfer and over thirty years has a track record of more than a half million transactions. Staff has been family or the few golf professionals trained to advise and fit customers with their starter set, improvement set, pro-line set and even a senior set of golf clubs. The shop has generated sales in the tens of thousands. Currently, Dani Tracy, who is LPGA certified and associated with the Central Coast Golf Academy as well as Darren Doran, Mission Prep High School’s Golf Coach, work part time in the shop. However, father and sons echoed the best part of their years owning Roger Dunn Golf Shop has been finding career success working together as a family-owned business and meeting wonderful people who have become friends over the years. “We are now seeing grandkids of golfers we fitted when we first opened,” Todd said. Youth golfing has always been a high priority for the Schaffer family. They offer discounts to academic team members, support youth tournaments, and traditionally help raise funds for The First Tee Junior Golf Program. They are also the liaison for customers wishing to donate their clubs to youth teams when they trade up to a new set. When asked how they’ve weathered the ups and downs of the economy, Lance advised, “Be there for your customers -- always. Go where the trends in the market take you so you have what
customers want. For example, when we started the shop there were no girls’ golf teams in high school. Women’s golf is a major part of our business today. For retail stores know how to buy inventory. There will be times when business is down. You need enough of the right inventory, but you don’t want to get stuck with it. Be sure to keep up with product lines. In golf a popular manufacturer will have a hot selling club one year and then offer one that doesn’t please anyone the following year. We need to stay ahead to customize the best products for our golfers.” The Schaffers proudly state a family member has owned and operated and even opened and closed the shop seven days a week since 1986. They are ready to provide whatever the golfer needs at 190 Station Way in Arroyo Grande or give Lance or Todd a call at (805) 481-3866. Mark your calendars for the grand celebration currently in planning for this August. - Story by Judy Salamacha
