ever judge a restaurant by its location. It seems the best food is located off the beaten path. After months of searching for an acceptable authentic Mexican food place, I stumbled upon a Hispanic Food Mecca, Efren’s Deli Shop in Oceano. Having just returned from Cancun and craving the spicy wonderfulness that is Mexican food, I was overjoyed to find this family run restaurant. The Alvarez Family has been dishing out authentic, delicious Mexican food for years. Having expanded next door, Efren’s is running strong with a lively take-out business and a casual dining room. We started with a Jarritos tamarindo (Mexican soda flavored by tamarind) and a Negra Modelo beer. The chips are house made

Mexico, this is a meal I engorge myself on and relish every morsel. It doesn’t get any better than this they are my addiction. You can order everything mild, if you are a true gringo. and the salsa was so hot, even a dip made my lips numb. We had it mixed with avocado to produce the best guacamole. We ordered tacos al pastor, which is a meat filling topped with white-diced onions, cilantro and green sauce. Two small corn tortillas hug the perfect combo of savory and hot. Sold as street food from vendors in
The meat selections are varied and impressive, Carnitas is wellcooked pork with light flavoring; Carne Asada is a beef (usually flank steak). The dish is a butterflied fillet of beef quickly seared. Chorizo is a spicy Mexican pork sausage normally cooked outside of the casing, and is amazing with scrambled eggs.
Here is where it gets exotic and wonderful. Please try these wonderful tacos: Cabeza (which were my children’s favorite until they figured out just what part of the cow these delicacies came from) is cow head. Lengua, beef tongue, Tripas is pig intestines, and Sesos is the beef brains. I was extremely impressed that they had Taco de Sesos, which is particularly hard to find. This rare dish rocked my world tasting remarkable. All were so full of flavor, they beg to be tried.
Efren’s Deli Shop is open from breakfast till after party crowd. Specific hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:00am to 10:00pm, Friday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. They are located at 1720 Beach Street in Oceano, or call them at (805) 710-1677.

ada Mason has been what she calls a “Junker” for over 20 years. She owned her first store in Branson, Missouri where she lived for about 12 years. She started in a small house in the Historic District of Downtown Branson, where she incorporated a Tea Room with her small Antique Business. The rest as they say is History.... After leaving Missouri, she returned to her roots, Reno and the Lake Tahoe Area. Booth renting seemed to be the best thing to do, until she opened another store. She loves to repurpose and reuse old and vintage items. In Reno her store “Vintage Chic” was a popular place. Coming from a family of DIY’ers, she taught herself to use woodworking tools and had a large part of her store disignated to repurposing and building using old materials. She is happy to share her knowledge and ideas with her customers. Her clientel now comes to her for ideas and

help on their own projects. Now you can find her at her store the Old Potting Bench at the west most end of the charming Arroyo Grande Village. Walking into the Old Potting Bench is like walking into the Disneyland of Home Decor shops. A wonderfully bright and inviting store which houses dream-inspired unique antiques and vintage eye candy that will delight you while captivating music allows one to peruse the aisles in joyous glee.
Established first in Morro Bay, CA in March 2013, it was the demand from her loyal customers for even more quality furniture and hard-to-get home decor items which prompted owner, Vada Mason, to move to a larger space in the Village of Arroyo Grande. Since then, it’s been a favorite and required desitnation among locals and visiting vacationers, as the delightful displays seem to change almost daily. It certainly isn’t your typical antique store. A garden area filled with hardy succulents sits among quaint patio chairs and tables perfect for a cozy outdoor vignette. Large metal arbors and wall scrolls, vintage cane chairs, chalk-painted and natural wood tables, lovely dressers with unqiue embellishments and handles, primitive hutches, old doors and windows, vintage dishes, lin-
ens, decorative picture frames and mirrors, crystal vases, hand-made lotions and light fixtures are just some of the items you might find at The Old Potting Bench if they haven’t already been snatched up. Rustic, shabby chic, farm, French country, western, you name the style, The Old Potting Bench probably has it or knows where to get it. Currently housing approximately four different vendors, The Old Potting Bench is an ecletic blend of specially hand-picked inspried items gathered from many sources. Short of ideas or don’t know what to put where? Vada is happy to help make your home as inviting as she is passionate about making her store the best on the Central Coast. Possibly the most memorable part of visiting The Old Potting Bench is Marley, the store Shitzu mascot who loves welcoming visitors. The Old Potting Bench is open every day except Tuesdays.

he 34th annual Morro Bay Harbor Festival will focus on local waterfront lifestyle celebrating “all things bay� of our unique, local fishing harbor. The Morro Bay Harbor Festival organization committee is busy working to bring to Morro Bay a new and improved harbor festival on the first saturday in october this year. The 34th annual Morro Bay Harbor Festival will have a whole new look, location and “back to the basics� appeal.

It will be located on the embarcadero between harbor and marina streets. “After careful consideration, the festival committee decided to focus even more on the harbor lifestyle and fresh fish that only Morro Bay can lay claim to in this county� says festival president jim sanders. “And we wanted to bring the festival into the 21st century by updating the time line to one entertainmentfilled day and to hold it closer to center of the embarcadero.�
The main event will take place all day on saturday, october 3, 2015 from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm. As in the past, the festival will offer attendees live music all day from local bands as well at the headliner band “abba fab� at 5:00 pm. To top off the day, there will an exciting new feature - a spectacular fireworks display in the bay next to morro rock at dusk. Additionally, admission to this year’s Morro Bay Harbor Festival is free for all attendees.
Sanders is delighted that this year’s festival will be all about what makes Morro Bay so special, “a live working and local fishing harbor.� Festival goers will be able to purchase the freshest seafood from local fishermen at a variety of locations along the embarcadero including oysters, shrimp, bbq albacore, and rock crab right from the dock. There will also be maritime-heritage venues, races and water-craft demonstrations in the bay and plenty of live, and mostly local musical entertainment all day long. Local wine and beer will be available at the festival along with a variety of other food samplings, all from local vendors.

This redesign of the harbor festival is a partnership between many organizations including the city of morro bay, the commercial fishermen association, the coast guard, and the business community. Robbie Domingues is a Central Coast native who grew up surfing the Pismo Pier. After having worked in Pismo Beach surf shops for the majority of his life, it seemed only natural for him to open his own. Upon entering Esteem one can’t help but notice the large selection of surfboards, equipment, clothes and vintage surf memorabilia. The atmosphere is laid back with employees that are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to assist you in finding whatever you may need. Ever since he opened the doors at Esteem, it has been one of Domingues’ top priorities to have a positive impact on the area’s next generation of surfers; which is one of the reasons why he created a surf team. Captained by Walter Cerny, one of the best professional surfers to come out of Pismo Beach, the team is designed to give kids the tools they need to progress competitively as well as provide a positive environment to enjoy the sport of surfing in. Domingues and Cerny help coach team members with instruction, technique tips, and running practice heats. Domingues, Cerny, and the folks at Esteem also participate in
beach cleanups and hold annual contests at the pier. One of Esteems young surf team members is Braden Jones. Jones has been a fixture on contest podiums up and down the California coast. He recently won the regional title for the juniors division in the highly competitive NSSA contest series, a feat that is not easily accomplished. With the support of friends and family, and a strong work ethic on his side, Jones has a bright future ahead of him.
