When we decided to produce the Inspired Health Magazine, we thought about our community and how we live here on the central coast. We are filled with gratitude regarding the beauty of the rolling hills, the endless sandy beaches and our clean air. Our community is filled with people passionate about their healthy living and we wanted to create a forum for our local residents to be inspired, get connected and get started with tools to bring innovation, balance and restoration into their lives. We know that there are a lot of studies, opinions and theories in the health realm and we incorporated a few of those within the pages of our publication. We are excited about your feedback and how the information implements change in your life. Please let us know through our website and our social media platforms how you are able to move a step closer to reaching goals, establishing clarity, and living in gratitude.

here are several annual health and fitness conferences that trainers attend to learn new research in exercise prescription, program design, client communication, and the latest and greatest in group exercise techniques (think Zumba). For years; one could argue that, in general, health, fitness and wellness conferences have remained relatively the same, providing similar regurgitated information, yet health and fitness pros continued to attend (they need CEU’s after all). Well, sit down, hold on and enjoy the ride because the world of wellness has evolved. Innovations in health technology and most noticeably the speed at which tech is progressing has, and will, continue to change the landscape of fitness, health and wellness as we know it. Now, it’s a matter of keeping up.

Fitness trackers have been around for a long time but they have never been as cool or tracked as much. Rather than discuss the features and benefits of each tracker on the shelf here is a snapshot of what a day in the life of health-tech looks like now. 6 a.m.- Wake up in the morning, glance at the device and review the number of hours slept, number of times walked to the bathroom, tossing and turning, average heart-rate and blood-pressure. Step on the scale or 3D Imaging Device to determine weight, bodyfat percentage, fat-mass, muscle-mass, body-mass index, hydration level and soon perhaps even bonemineral density. All of this data are of course transmitted to the cloud and platform of choice, providing a summary of your realtime health. Soon, a lowpowered laser will monitor blood sugar doing away with painful and annoying finger sticks, and possibly, it will be done from your device.

8:13 a.m. – Arrive at work, albeit 13-minutes late, the boss is angry and the device picks up an increase in body temperature, heart rate and stress level. Biometrics and mood are continually monitored throughout the day leading up to the 2 PM appointment with Dr. Smith. 2 p.m. – Brush the hair, power-up the tablet, and the videoconference session begins. Dr. Smith reviews a gazillion data-points from the last 6 months, sent via the tracker, gives a thumbs up (but says “cut back on the bacon”) and the appointment is over…without ever leaving work.

7 a.m.- Calories and nutrients from breakfast and hot-beverage of choice are calculated, nutrients identified, deficits sent to the cloud and voila, the device says that bacon was a poor choice and what’s on the menu tomorrow? Yep, oatmeal. How is this done? Through slick drinking vessels (seriously, look up www.my vessyl.com) with embedded sensors that can tell the difference between coffee, cola and chardonnay. And the food? Envision this; a Corningware, digital plate. Oops, almost late for work!

…and the saga continues. Medicine and Exercise Unite For years, organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine have preached and proven that exercise is medicine. Now, with the ability to collect, wirelessly transfer and review personal health information in real-time, the proof is in the pudding. How has this become possible? Integration, integration, integration. continued, page 12

Retailers have long known that success is all about location, location, location (though Alec Baldwin would argue it’s “Sell! Sell! Sell!) and health tech is now all about integration between products, software and service. Smartphones have integrated communication with productivity tools, GPS, maps, Justin Bieber and of course Candy Crush. Now is the time for health integration. Garmin-a-Gucci Yes, Garmin-a Gucci is a made up word (coined in the last 10 seconds from the author) but in one word provides a clue into the future; biometric trackers are already built into Nike and Under-Armour and soon Gucci may just measure glucose. The bottom line is technology has been integrated within itself and is now moving towards full-blown lifestyle integration via consumer behavior, attitudes, fashion and corporate America. Good Business It’s been known for a few days now (sarcasm) that regular exercise and sound nutrition are beneficial for increasing energy, improving mood, sleep, decreasing risks for disease. Forward thinking companies now recognize this and understand that the healthier the employee, the healthier the profits. Approximately 50% of larger corporations now offer some type of employee wellness program with access to a wellness portal, health education, wellness coaching and friendly fitness competitions. This type of forward thinking, however, began decades ago in Japan, and grew out of the philosophy of kaizen, or “continual improvement.” Historians have stated that this

approach helped to lift their ruined economy post World War II assisting Japan in creating a more prominent role in manufacturing and business. It’s commonplace for Japanese workers to begin the day with scheduled workouts (on the clock) or newhires to spend the first couple of weeks of employment ensuring health and physical standards are met and maintained. Japanese leadership understood that a key driver of a company’s success is the workers themselves – good health is good for business. It’s About the User Health, fitness and wellness technology are here to stay and will only become more advanced. It’s not too far off from the distant future that in addition to smartphones, smart homes will start to pop up integrating health technology into stovetops, refrigerators and, yes, even the toilet. From health gadgets on the wrist, sensors in shirts and inside shoes, technology is part of daily life and here to stay. While some may find health technology frustrating and unhelpful, those seeking to improve performance or those with ‘tracker’ type of brains, are in for a treat. And for non-athletes, technology may be beneficial simply because it makes it easier to behave in a healthy way. Out-of-site, out-out-of-mind versus top-of-mind awareness is partly why health tech works. Fitbit, Jawbone and other fitness trackers may just end up on your cluttered drawer-of-things, but if interested, start-slowly, keep it simple and track 1-2 things at a time. But, before shelling out 200 bucks on the latest flashy gadget, try developing a lifestyle of wellness, be intentional and find meaning in it, remain consistent and allow health to become fully integrated into eachday. Doing so will not only improve health and provide a consistent, positive path forward, regardless of what’s worn on the wrist.

n recent years, more professional athletes are turning their attention to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for speedier recovery from trainings and competitions in addition to faster healing from injuries and surgeries. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to reap the benefits to get peak performance during training or to get back into the game faster after an injury. What is HBOT and how can it help with athletic performance, recovery and healing? HBOT is the inhalation of oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber that is pressurized to greater than 1 atmosphere. The increase in pressure forces the oxygen to dissolve into the plasma, joint fluid, cerebral fluid, lymph, etc. Once the oxygen is dissolved, it can travel freely to any parts of the body that need it. To date, there is no evidence that HBOT can extend the limits of physical performance in normal healthy adults. Therefore, it is not considered a sports performance enhancement drug. Because of that, many professional NBA, NHL, MBL, and NFL teams are allowed to utilize hyperbaric chambers for their players healing and recovery. Athletes of any level can amplify recovery from intensive training with HBOT because it ac-

14

celerates healing from muscle strain, improves blood flow, and increases energy levels. In the 2012 Olympics, the USA Men’s Water Polo Team was able to bring a portable hyperbaric chamber to the Olympic village and use it for physical recovery in between games. In addition to speeding up recovery, HBOT can also help counteract exercise fatigue. According to a study by Ishii et al, titled “Hyperbaric Oxygen as an Adjuvant for Athletes” (Sports Med. 2005), HBOT increases the oxygen supply to the musculoskeletal system in the state of fatigue and consequently activates cellular activity, increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, and promotes the metabolism of fatigue substances, such as lactic acid and ammonia (Haapaniemi T & al, 1995). As a result, HBOT is considered as a method of promoting recovery from fatigue. Along with better performance, athletes and coaches are also looking at reducing the time that athletes are out of the game because of injuries caused by sports related activities. As inflammation and pain play primary roles with respect to recovery, HBOT has been shown to significantly reduce inflammation and ameliorate

pain. According to D.A. Rossignol and T. Small, (Medical Veritas 3, 2006) “one hour of HBOT is equivalent to taking 1400 mg of Motrin without the toxic response.” Additionally, HBOT can accelerate healing from surgeries and wounds. New evidence supports the therapy as an adjunct and practical treatment to help moderate the effects of concussions and head injuries suffered by athletes playing high contact sports. A study conducted at Temple University suggested that patients treated with HBOT recovered approximately 30% faster from ankle sprains (Staples J., Clement D. 1996). Studies and clinical experience have demonstrated the benefits of HBOT for sports-related injuries because it increases collagen production, stimulates the creation of new blood vessels, mobilizes stem cells, and decreases susceptibility towards reinjuring target areas. If you simply wish to improve your general health and conditioning, increase energy, strength, stamina and endurance, improve concentration and focus, reduce dehydration and maximize your performance, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help you. Preheat oven to 450°. Place a pizza stone in the oven and heat for 30 minutes. While the pizza stone is heating, microwave the shredded zucchini on high for 3 minutes, let cool, place it in a tea towel and squeeze as much moisture out as you can. Mix the zucchini, egg, mozzarella, Parmesan, oregano, salt and pepper. Press the mixture onto a sheet of parchment paper, pressing into a 9” circle and transfer to the oven on top of the heated pizza stone. Bake until lightly golden brown, about 13-15 minutes. (I just dumped the mixture on the parchment and used the back of a fork to spread it into a 9” circle) Use a pre-made pizza or barbecue sauce or make your own by adding ¾ cup chopped heirloom or plum tomatoes, 1 Tbsp olive oil and 1 minced garlic clove to a small saucepan. Cook on low heat until liquid is almost all cooked out, about 30 minutes. Blend with a stick blender (I used my NutriBullet) and season with salt and pepper. Spread the sauce on the pizza, top with the mozzarella, corn, bacon and red onion and bake until the cheese is bubbling, about 10 minutes. Top with cilantro and enjoy!

re wearables adding value to our lives or creating yet another distraction in a world of 24/7 notifications? Technology is becoming more and more integrated into how we go about our day, from smartphones to smart cars, we are surrounded by new and exciting devices that promise to enhance our lives. The fitness industry has capitalized on this opportunity in an attempt to give people the tools they need to monitor and improve their health. Walk down the street and you are sure to see at least one person wearing an activity tracker and most phones are constantly tracking movement throughout the day using one of the 100,000-plus health and fitness apps available today. It seems the wearables trend is here to stay but it does raise some important questions: What are the benefits of activity trackers and how can users make the most out of them? How can technology be

18

leveraged to enhance wellbeing? Do these bracelets, pedometers, necklaces (yes, that’s right ladies - your jewelry can track your activity!), and apps actually help increase activity? Ask any fitness professional and they will tell you that people tend to greatly overestimate their activity and underestimate the amount they eat – leading to weight gain and increased health risks. In fact, while the American Heart Association recommends adults get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise and at least 2 days of resistance training per week surveys show less than 20% of Americans are hitting the overall exercise recommendation. Enter the wearable activity tracker. Numbers don’t lie and having 24/7 tracking could be a step in the right direction. Most wearable health technology companies claim to improve a user’s health by increasing awareness around physical activity, or lack thereof, then creating goals and remind-

Inspired Health

ers to get them moving. As technology continues to improve users are able to record, analyze, and trend personal health and fitness data conveniently and accurately – now it is just a matter of getting people to wear them. Making the most out of an activity tracker means picking one that is best suited for the user’s lifestyle, but with so many devices on the market this can be a daunting task. It is important for users to do their homework before shelling out big bucks for a fancy wearable that might end up collecting dust on the dresser shelf. Look at Convenience – wrist trackers tend to see the highest usage rates while clip-on trackers get lost or left on an article of clothing when changing. Fashion vs Function - Many devices now come with the ability to trade bands or “skins” to match outfits and style for the fashion forward user. If adding a splash of color isn’t enough, many companies have come out

with necklaces, rings, and analog watches fit for executive meetings that track everything from steps to sleep in style. Many devices are water resistant or “sweat-proof” but not waterproof - swimmers, rowers, or professionals that require frequent through handwashing should make sure they are getting a device they can use around the clock. Not all data is equal – or tracked. Consumers should ensure the device they are looking at can accurately track the information they want to gather. Runners may want heartrate and GPS for speed, distance, etc. while an office worker might see more value tracking sleep, stress level, and having reminders to get up and move every hour. Working with a trainer or health coach can be helpful in selecting the right device as well as interpreting and leveraging the data to set goals, monitor progress, and maintain accountability.

abandon them. Users listed several reasons for abandoning tracking, but most boiled down to picking the wrong device and not having the proper support from setting goals to overcoming obstacles and push through challenges. Does this mean that wearables are a hopeless pursuit or just another fitness fad? Far from it. A wearable alone won’t change behavior but as the health and wellness industry continues to embrace technology, activity trackers will become an integral part of smarter fitness. The key to seeing widespread success with wearables is making them an integrated part of a larger program that can provide the education, motivation, opportunity, and reward for users to get out and move. Health clubs and personal trainers have long sought after a way to manage the 23 hours a member isn’t working out at the gym. Corporations are looking for ways keep their employees healthier and more productive. Physicians and care facilities are looking for ways to monitor their patients’ health following treatment. Wearables might be falling short today but as we learn how to properly integrate them into how we train, work, and take care of ourselves the possibilities are endless.

Increasing awareness is a great first step in changing a behavior but it is just the beginning. Just as buying new running shoes won’t make someone a marathon runner, buying activity tracker won’t make the user more active all by itself. In order for technology to enhance overall wellbeing it must go beyond just tracking and reporting and make the information meaningful. Getting healthy requires awareness to spark a change as well as mental preparation, education, motivation, support, opportunities to succeed, and positive reinforcement. Wearables only cover a few of these aspects but can still be a valuable tool if paired with coaching or organized health and wellness programs. All this leads to the most important question of all – do wearables work? Unfortunately, much of research is leaning toward “no.” While most people do see an initiall increase in activity several studies showed a large drop in long-term utilization, with less than a third of users remaining after the first 6 months. The actual utilization numbers fluctuate based on the study but the theme remains the same: American’s seem to be excited about getting a new wearable or app but are quick to

Call them professional gait whisperers or footwear experts, they have the knowledge to put customers in a shoe that meets the specific needs of their gaits. The good news is most running specialty stores offer gait analyses as a complimentary service.

GAIT

a manner of walking, stepping, or running

ANALYSIS

a process as a method of studying the nature of something

A footwear expert evaluates the customer’s mechanics in order to recommend shoes that address their specific biomechanical profile, lower extremity anatomy, and irregularities (e.g. bunions, hammer toes, etc.). The footwear expert also considers injuries and training schedules when suggesting ideal shoe options.

hen a runner’s toe peaks out from the side of their running shoe, or an avid hiker wakes up to an acute pain in their arch, or a podiatrist gives an encouraging nudge to a patient experiencing pain, there is no denying it’s time—time for a new walking or running shoe. Rather than defaulting to what they always wear, choosing what’s on sale, or opting for the latest trend, it would prove beneficial if people listen to their gait.

The Right Shoe Category A stand-out of the shoe industry that customers learn during a gait analysis is that most walking and running shoes are categorized as stability, motion control, or neutral.

Every person’s gait is best supported by a stability, motion control, or neutral shoe.

Stability Shoes correct mechanics when a person shows signs of overpronation, which is when their arch collapses inward as the foot contacts the ground during the gait cycle. Motion Control Shoes correct excessive overpronation. Most motion control shoes accomplish this by adding plastic shanks and extra dense foam under the medial side of the feet. Neutral Shoes provide adequate arch support and cushioning for people who have a neutral or supinated gait. Supination (or underpronation) is the opposite of overpronation and is characterized by the outward rolling of the foot and ankle during the gait cycle. continued, page 22

Once the footwear expert identifies the correct category of shoe for a customer’s gait (while they keep in mind the customer’s lower extremity anatomy, injuries and goals), it is important that the customer tries on multiple shoes within that category and chooses the one with most comfort and best fit.

lmost everyone is busy. Modern culture constructs and celebrates the myth of having it all, doing it all, and being it all — all at the same time. Inboxes are full. Multitasking is expected and yet, it diminishes the quality of the tasks. Long lists that are hard or impossible to get done hang in the air with judging scorn. Schedules are full of back to back appointments and activities. What are often compromised are relationships, self care, nourishment and rest. This widespread busyness lessens the capacity for compassion and makes grumpy, anxious, short-tempered, stressed-out people. Tracing the way back to the source of this mindless, distracted doing, exposes clues about the cultural messaging and conditioning that we are subjected to. Busyness seems to serve as a kind of existential reassurance, a safeguard against emptiness: “Life can’t possibly be meaningless if I am so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day. As long as I am moving, I am alive, I am doing something and I have relevance.”

Stillness and rest, in this culture, are often associated with indulgence and laziness. For example, when tired, have a cup of coffee or a sugary snack for a boost rather than listening to the body’s message that rest or deeper self-care is needed to restore balance. People, overwhelmed by life and circumstances, go day after day to yoga studios. They discover a place to transform their minds while unraveling the tension patterns in their bodies and nervous systems. The practices of mindful movement and meditation offer tools for relaxing, restoring, and releasing stress while returning harmony. Slowly, the practices reconstruct the misunderstandings of busyness to reveal ease. The resistance and struggle to let in surrender and stillness starts to soften in the time of practice, restoring meaning, purpose, value and love to replace the chaotic, erratic, wild, spinning movement of modern life. continued, page 26

To step out of the busy agendas and purpose driven doings to be requires willingness for quiet and stillness (phone and technology powered off, distractions minimized). The conscious pause leads to deeper listening that can begin to shift busy and numb to in-sights (places to see what is hiding beneath the noise). Whether practicing yoga, meditation, or walking on the beach, these portals can transport mind, brain, nervous system and body from contraction to expansion and openness. They can open the door to more creativity, new growth and new possibilities. Life can be experienced more wholeheartedly. Relationships deepen and connections become more authentic. With room for deeper meaning, the trajectory of life’s path can change and life’s flow can happen. There is a shift from doing to being. The stillness of the yoga mat or the meditation cushion reminds us of what is important. At the end of life will there be regret for the duties not done or work unfinished? Probably not. More likely there will be the wish for one more cup of tea or a laugh with a friend, another visit with parent or child, a late night with a good friend on the phone across the country, a walk on the beach with a sweetheart. Life is too short to be stuck in busyness! Jennifer Patterson is a yogi, a teacher, a mentor, an entrepreneur and business owner, a lover of nature, a student, a seeker, a mother, a wife. She has been teaching and practicing yoga for more that 20 years. She weaves Ayurveda, therapeutic yoga, meditation, neuroscience, human development and anatomy into her teachings and practices. n his book “The Creative Fight,” Chris Orwig defines creativity as an ongoing process of growth and selfrealization. Consider how the creative process that Orwig describes (information, imagination, and creativity) can be a useful tool to support parents to achieve long-term, sustainable change and to shift how we see our parenting role during the adolescent years. Hannah, the mother of a 16year-old, has a long list of concerns when asked about her son. He stays up late watching Netflix, sleeps through his morning alarm, and ignores his mother’s increasingly desperate attempts to get him up and out the door. He’s frequent-

ly late and, according to PowerSchool, he’ll end the semester with several failing grades. Hannah is afraid that her son is jeopardizing his future--consequences and punishments don’t seem to change his behavior. The first step, information, includes recognizing your child’s strengths. Questions that support this step include: What do you appreciate about your son? When you notice that he has more life, is more animated, what is he doing? Where do you see him display skills, qualities, and characteristics that are important to you?

friends, he meticulously organizes his gear, prepares meals to bring, investigates routes and water filtration systems, and wakes at 7 a.m. to get on the trail early. Hannah makes note of the skills that he brings to the summer activity: selfdiscipline, selfdirection, intrinsic motivation, and confidence. As we let go of labels we have assigned our teen (unmotivated, lazy, depressed), based on our own fears, and instead recognize our teen’s strengths, we open up possibilities for positive change.

Hannah noticed that when her son plans a summer backpacking trip with

The second step, imagination, essentially means: the ability to call something to mind that isn’t present (Orwig). We move away from a crisisfocused, problemoriented approach to parenting (“If he was getting to school on time and doing well in his classes, there wouldn’t be a problem!”) toward a more thoughtful, longterm vision that guides all parenting choices and decisions. In his book “Escaping the Endless Adolescence,” Joseph Allen provides a very useful analogy. Parents of young children believe that we keep kids healthy in their early years by limiting exposure to germs. As it turns out, this strategy often backfires because children who are least likely to develop allergies are those who, early on, lived among germs, animal hairs and dust. Moderate stress of exposure seems to prompt the immune system to develop in a healthy way. Similarly, as Allen points out, when children (and teens especially) are shielded from difficult experiences, they are also robbed of building tolerance for the larger stressors of adulthood. We stifle their chances to learn how to handle life’s challenges on their own, in their own way. Our focus shifts to seeing opportunities that support our teen to grow important life skills rather than a laundry list of what we don’t want: being late to school, failing classes, not getting homework done, watching too much Netflix. It is during the imagination stage, that we acknowledge that sustainable change doesn’t happen by nagging, threatening to take away privileges, or rescuing. The third step, creativity, is where imagination gets to work, where we get things done. It involves adapting, making the best with the situation and materials at hand. Creativity is about seeing what has been seen, but with a new lens (Orwig). Rather than remaining stuck in a parenting downward spiral, where behaviors we can’t control, without nagging, pleading, and threatening, receive all of our attention; we begin to reverse the downward trajectory with small, positive steps that move us upward, toward our larger vision.

Hannah recognized that her reliance on external controls (waking up her son each morning) and rescuing him from the consequences of his choices (calling the school to excuse his tardies) are undermining the development of essential life skills, skills he has demonstrated in other areas. By changing these two parenting behaviors, Hannah gave her son the responsibility to manage his own life and the opportunity to learn and grow from his mistakes. In the process, she redefined what it means to be a good parent. The creative process (information, imagination, and creativity) provides a framework for parents to move from a narrow view (what’s not working) to the bigger picture of what is truly important. e’ve all been there—a client walks into the salon for their highly anticipated monthly trip to the hairdressers and BAM, they’re hit with that obnoxious odor.

Photo by Marcia Beck What they’re smelling is ammonia, the most caustic of the chemical additives in traditional hair color, but what they’re also exposed to is a multitude of other toxic chemicals such as paraphenylenediamine(PPD), resorcinol and parabens to name just a few. One of the purposes of these chemicals in hair color, particularly ammonia, is to open the cuticle of the hair so that color can be deposited or removed depending on what color service is being done. They’re cheap and plentiful, and for more than 100 years this was the only way to do it. Short-term exposure to these chemicals is known to cause eye and skin irritation and breathing issues. Long-term exposure is known to cause cancer and auto immune diseases. It is best to stay as far away from these chemicals as possible, especially a pregnant momma to be! Thank goodness, these days, it’s possible to avoid these harsh additives. With mass amounts of info at their fingertips clients are becoming much more savvy about the beauty industry and are beginning to demand a healthier approach to dressing their tresses. And hairdressers are tired of being exposed day in and day out to these toxic chemicals therefore the trend towards “cleaner” professional color lines is increasing by leaps and bounds every year.

Ten years ago a hairdresser may have had 1 or 2 color lines to choose from, and they had to search high and low to find them. Not so now. It seems every pro color company is scrambling to keep up with the demand. More and more discerning salons are choosing color lines that have removed these toxic chemicals from their formulas, creating a “clean-air” environment that’s safe for everyone. This is a win-win situation for both the client and the hairdresser. No more icky odors, no more itchy scalp, and no more long term exposure to highly toxic chemicals. Originally it was thought that ammonia-free hair color couldn’t produce the same results as ammoniated color lines. Not so any more. These color lines have come a long way in the last few years. The client can now expect 100% grey coverage, shine beyond belief, and vibrant hues in every color under the sun. Gone are the days of choosing hair color over hair health. The client can now have both! Marcia Beck has been a hairdresser for almost 30 years. She is the owner and Creative Director of HIVE a natural beauty collective in San Luis Obispo. he noise, the smells, the chores, the vet bills - to the outsider, the relationship between pet and owner can seem a bit one-sided. So what is it about animals that lead millions to seek non-human companionship? How is it that people of all ages and walks of life can find themselves committed so strongly to the health and well-being of something perhaps viewed as an unnecessary novelty? Why is it that deep emotional bonds form between animal and man? Pet owners, of course, have a myriad of answers, all largely rooted in the beneficial role animals have played in increasing their own quality of life. Pet ownership isn’t just about maintaining the health of an animal, it is equally important to maintaining the health of the owner. Sure, there is a beneficial health component to owning a pet in the physical sense. A dog or even a large bird will often get the owner out of the house and active in attempt to quell the animal’s eagerness to explore its surroundings. It is a heck of a lot easier to rationalize and swallow the grind of a jog or hike when one has a companion he knows will enjoy every second of the expedition. Within the veterinary clinic, however, evidence of the effect of pet ownership in a much different area of health is observed almost daily.

30

Inspired Health

The proposed and proven influences of pet ownership to a healthy mind are as varied as the species that provide this often-immeasurable therapy. It has been well documented by reputable medical studies that service and therapy animals can have a profound effect on mitigating depression and anxiety. These animals, acting purely on unconditional love, devoid of any sort of social discrimination, are allowed deep into an otherwise very closed-off inner circle many who struggle with depression maintain. Animals provide a sense of purpose, a conduit for connection, a reason to leave the house. Companion animals have long been used to stimulate the elderly not only in the physical sense but the mental sense, proving a potent antidote for loneliness and a grindstone to maintain cognitive acumen. In the past 30 years, animals have even been implemented in the rehabilitation of inmates. The most brazen of people, considered beyond redemption and incapable of sympathy, have found what was lost in the unwavering dedication and affection of their feathered or furred companion. These ambassadors of human wellness expand to the slimy and scaled as well. Reptiles and amphibians offer a prehistoric beauty, a kaleidoscope of colors, behaviors and natural history that nurture a keen interest in their keep-

ers. Species can prove incredibly challenging to maintain in captivity; however, success in the endeavor allows for blossoming of the owner’s creativity in designing a habitat and an expansion in his passion for the natural world. The opportunity to watch such a marvelous creature flourish in the creation of the keeper is incredibly rewarding, fulfilling and, to an extent, endearing. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of clinical veterinary medicine is the opportunity to see, safeguard, and preserve what pets are for: For the frail widow, her cat’s needs provide her an itinerary for the day; a sense of meaning, responsibility, and usefulness. For the awkward teen riddled with social anxiety, her rabbit provides her friendship; a lending ear that will never criticize her style, her lack of interest in the mainstream, her social status. For the middle-aged, ‘empty-nested’ couple, their cockatoo provides them an outlet for a yearning to nurture and spoil; a filler for a large emotional void. For the would-be naturalist and budding biologist, his python provides him a sense of mystique; a living, breathing wonder that compels him to explore his interests and fuels his passion and curiosity. For the hard-edged, cynical biker his macaw provides an oasis of innocence and purity; a creature that exudes and accepts love without judgment nor concern for his past actions and choices. For the vast majority, their companion is their pharmacon. Dr. Abiola Oladoke, Ph.D., herself a U.S. Army Veteran and Chief Clinician of O & A Wellness Group Central Coast of California, has a solution. f you have walked through a garden and luxuriated in the scent of a rose or inhaled the sweet fragrance of an orange peel, then you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. It’s no secret that inhaling essential oils can provide a sense of harmony and peace of mind, but did you know that they can be used to clean your house, help your skin, relieve allergies, boost your immunity and more? Essential oils have increased in popularity over the past decade, but they are not a fad. In fact, essential oils have been used for thousands of years, dating back to pre-Biblical times. Egyptians used essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment and food preparation. Greeks used them in therapeutic massage and aromatherapy. Romans used essential oils to promote health and personal hygiene. Nature’s Secret Weapon An essential oil is a naturally occurring, highly concentrated liquid derived from the seeds, stems, roots, flowers, bark, leaves, or other elements of a plant. Plants have unique chemical compositions that help protect them against predators and disease. Essential oils contain the properties of the plant they are derived from and provide valuable physical and emotional benefits. 101 Uses The number of uses for essential oils is seemingly endless. Boosting immunity and improving health, purifying the air, protecting skin from sunburn, mosquito repellent, aromatherapy, cooking and even crafting one’s own personal care or cleaning products are just some of the ways that oils are being used today. They have spawned a revolution in the DIY movement as well. Essential oils are added to many things, including homemade house cleaning products, lotions, deodorants, homemade shampoos, lotions, and laundry detergent. People are turning to essential oils to avoid toxic chemicals in cleaning and personal care products and to minimize or avoid pharmaceutical drugs with negative side effects. Essential oils are natural, non-invasive and easy to apply. Many individuals even claim that essential oils have helped them avoid doctor visits and expensive prescriptions. Getting Started If you’re ready to harness the power of some of the world’s most therapeutic compounds, here are some easy ways to get started:

34

Inspired Health

Choose essential oils wisely: It is important to note that not all essential oils are created equal. Using high quality, therapeutic grade, 100% pure essential oils without chemical solvents or additives is key if you want to avoid adulterated oils that may contain cheap solvents or carrier oils and synthetic aromas or chemicals. Start with some basic oils: The options are vast, there is much to learn and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. It is, therefore, important to start with a few basic oils, learn about their uses and cautions and explore how they can fit into your life. Some popular options to start out with, include: Tee Tree (Melaleuca) – Renown for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, it also protects against seasonal colds. Lavender – Reduces anxiety and soothes skin irritation and promotes relaxation. Peppermint – Supports healthy respiration and digestion, boosts energy and helps with headaches. Lemon – used to clean and cut grease, and as a deodorizer. Use the oils: They can be used aromatically or diffused into the air; applied topically; and the highest quality therapeutic grade oils can be taken internally. Although they are easy to get started with, like anything new, it is important to make sure you are using oils safely. Be sure to read up on each oil’s cautions and dilution ratios. Calling the company who produces the essential oils can help in determining their testing procedures for purity and how they recommend using their oils. A Word to the Wise Exploring essential oils can easily turn into a passion! Many people find themselves fascinated by their vast array of uses, from medicinal applications to simply enjoying the diversity of scents. This article is intended to be an introduction to essential oils. It is highly recommended that individuals research essential oils first and understand how to safely and properly use them. There are many wonderful books about essential oils and even consultants who teach classes online or locally. Happy Oiling… Keshet Lavoux is an entrepreneur, homeschool teacher, wellness advocate for an essential oils company and teaches about essential oils on the Central Coast. he word can’t doesn’t exist in Bill Grundler’s vocabulary, nor in his character. Never has, never will. The just turned 47-yearold former firefighter and current fitness instructor for a gym called Crossfit Inferno has been besting life’s challenges ever since he was a youngster. “As a child I don’t think I’d ever planned to do what I’m doing and what I’m feeling right now,” he said. “When I was a kid I always wanted to be an astronaut. I was always looking up at the moon. I was all set to go to the Air Force Academy and went there for a visit then decided on that trip, I just couldn’t do it. It was a point in my life being a senior I just didn’t think I could live under the rules of somebody else again. I was just itching to get out on my own and do my own thing.” Grundler was born in Newport Beach, but moved to Phoenix with his family when he was five. When he wasn’t gazing at the moon, he was always wrestling around with his kid brother. Both excelled at the sport throughout their school years. Grundler would continue on being a wrestling coach.

“Once I got out of school, my degree was in biology, anatomy, and physiology. My plan was originally to be a doctor, then a physical therapist. I got a job as biology teacher in Arizona. I was also coaching at the time. I loved being fit. I loved teaching people to be better athletes, but bored with the idea of just teaching in a classroom for the next 30 years.”

people in their jobs and careers. I got into the rescue scene to help firefighters become better rescuers.”

“I literally had a classroom right across the hallway from my Dad, also a teacher and coach. The most fun I would have is if a fight broke out in the hallway. My Dad and I would go break it up. But I didn’t think that would get a job for me in my career.”

Grundler’s reputation was growing. “I was always doing really hard workouts on my own. I was getting my firefighters to do crazy workouts with me. I was known as the guy who did really, really tough workouts. Then this buddy of mine called me and told me to check out a free crazy workout website called Crossfit. I saw what it was, did some of the workouts, and it didn’t really imprint on me at all until 2006 when I started getting bored with the workouts I was doing and realized what Crossfit was all about, and realized what it intended to do. I totally bought off on it and began training that way. I started training all my firefighters that way and then became a level one Crossfit trainer in 2007. I started Crossfit Inferno after my girlfriend convinced me to have a gym.”

Grundler’s next step changed his life. “I would teach during the school year, but in the summertime I would come back here to Pismo Beach and lifeguard. I really loved that. I loved the training aspect and getting the groups together and all working out. It reminded me of being on the wrestling team and competing. I did that for two years.” Back then the lifeguard program was overseen by the local fire department, and despite being only 27, Grundler was told that he was too old and faced an uphill battle joining the department. “It was one of the sparks that really drove me. Ok, I’m in better shape than all these guys. I went to the fire academy and came up valedictorian there. I got a job with Pismo as a firefighter and worked my way up to engineer. Then they turned the lifeguard department over to me. As I was doing this, I became the physical training coordinator for the county and for CalFire. Once again, here I am trying to help

Today Grundler has three Crossfit Inferno gyms in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Nipomo. What makes the Crossfit workout successful? f there were one answer for everyone about how to lose and maintain weight, the quest for fitness and health would be a no brainer. G enetics, lifestyle, employment, and family history all play such a huge part in what healthy weight loss looks like for any one person. Yes, it would be great to say, “eat this, do that” and you will be at your best. Realistically, it can really be pretty simple. Move more, eat less seems to be the best advice, but what does that really mean? T o effectively lose weight and keep it off takes time. fuel (fat) and gain or maintain body weight. W ow, who wants that? The best advice out there seems to be, drum roll please, lean proteins and vegetables, and moderation of all other nutrients, coupled with moderate exercise for 60 minutes a day 4-5 days a week. That being said, not all exercise is created equal. Types of exercises and intensity of exercise is also very important. High intensity, shorter workouts followed by lower intensity longer workouts tend to be the most effective strategy. S trength training and cardiovascular exercise need to be coupled together to create weight loss. A nd really, the biggest component to the weight loss

ost fad diets are slightlytweaked versions of a previous fad diet with a different name and best-selling book opportunity. The “Paleo Diet” has been great at getting people to eat fewer processed foods and more whole foods, but some have interpreted this as giving a green light to eat things like butter wrapped in bacon! It’s difficult to imagine a cavemen eating that.

ommended for weight loss is a whole foods, anti-inflammation style diet in combination with living a balanced life. The common effect of such a diet is improved energy, sleep, digestion and mood as well as pain reduction and weight loss. If a person doesn’t see desired results with these recommendations, then a more specific dietary suggestion tailored to the individual must be made.

Diet and weight loss can be both complex and personal. There is no one size fits all diet. The most successful diet is one that works for that individual. But what exactly does that mean? It can be both frustrating and consuming time to figure out exactly what works. For a diet to work it should be effective and sustainable.

When it comes to weight gain or inability to lose, the following must be taken into consideration: medications, hormone balance, digestive microbiome, toxic exposure, sleep habits, activity level, stress as well as emotional and psychological health. Weight gain is a way our bodies bring attention to an underlying imbalance. We are human and have an inherent need to eat real food, move, love, laugh, cry, have

social interaction, affection and spend time outside in nature. If we don’t have balance in each of these aspects of our lives, our bodies will let us know.

I don’t need sleep; it’s overrated.” However, good sleep has been directly linked to weight reduction? In 2012, the Canadian Medical Journal published an article demonstrating that sleep deprivation resulted in the inability to lose weight. In another study published in Cell, loss of sleep in jet lagged test subjects resulted in altered intestinal bacteria, replacing healthy bacteria with not so healthy bacteria leading to an increased propensity towards diabetes and obesity. Finally, lack of sleep results in an increase in Cortisol production, a hormone responsible for interfering with normal metabolism and increasing belly fat.

he other day, I was having a conversation with my very hip and health conscious aunt. She was confidently touting the benefits of being “gluten free” and defending the pros of the latest “fast” diet. You know the kind, where you fool your body into experiencing a famine by significantly cutting calories two out of seven days per week. While I had not heard of the fast diet, my first gut reactions were, experiencing a famine? What? Why? You’ve got to be kidding me. In our collective quest for the ideal diet, we often sacrifice our own health for immediate results such as short-term weight loss. It is possible to have both. In fact, when it comes to health, weight loss and longevity, sleep is often the blind spot that keeps us from achieving our goals. According to Sarah Godfrey, a Harvard trained physician who treats women’s health issues, “Sleep suffers from a PR problem and desperately needs rebranding.” Sleep isn’t sexy and is often sacrificed in the pursuit of more adrenalin producing endeavors. Almost everyone has heard or said, “I

he difference between tea and coffee is simple: coffee is deliberately hurried and tea is deliberately unhurried. When coffee is ordered people want it quick, and drink it immediately. You order it, grab it and go. Tea on the other hand takes patience and precision. If the water is too hot or it steeps too long, it can turn bitter. Tea demands one’s attention. It forces one to be

present, to slow down. The goal is not to get to the next meeting or appointment. Tea is for those that have made an intention to be here now. It’s no wonder that Americans are slow to embrace it. Surprisingly, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water. Well known for its health properties, it’s been used medicinally in China for more than 5000 years. The U.S. is the third largest importer in the world and

the tea market is growing rapidly due to widely publicized reports of its wellness benefits. Unlike brewed coffee, which typically has 100-200 mg. of caffeine, brewed tea typically has far less, on average 20-80 mg. of caffeine per 8 oz. cup. It has become clear that tea can supply the energy and the nutrients needed to maintain balance and even fight off disease with or without caffeine.

There are primarily three types of tea. Teas from the plant Camellia Sinensis which include Black Tea, Green Tea, White Tea, Oolong Tea and Pu-erh Tea all contain caffeine. Herbal teas are made from the flowers, leaves and stems of herbs and contain no caffeine. The last are blends which may contain herbal teas and any other type of tea. continued, page 44

Black Tea Black teas are made from the leaves of a shrub called Camellia sinensis. The harvested leaves go through a process called oxidation (they are exposed to moist oxygen-rich air), which turns the leaves a dark brown color. Tea manufactures control the amount of oxidation that takes place. Black tea naturally has 20- 80 mg. of caffeine and has theophylline, which can help speed up your heart rate and make you feel more alert. In addition, antioxidants in the tea are the organic substances that scavenge “free radicals,” the toxic by-product of natural biological processes that can damage cells and lead to cancer. Specifically polyphenol antioxidants in black tea can help block DNA damage. Compelling evidence has shown these polyphenols help prevent some types of cancer.

Green Tea Green teas are also from the plant Camellia Sinensis however the tea leaves do not go through the oxidation process, leaving them green in color. These teas are known for being high in antioxidants and polyphenols. In particular, green tea has a high content of catechins, which are antioxidants that fight and may even prevent cell damage. Green tea has been proven scientifically to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol and to help many heart related issues. And what is good for your heart is also typically good for your brain. Green tea has ben associated with improved memory as well as blocking the plaque linked to Alzheimer’s disease. It also helps stabilize blood sugar in people with diabetes. Christopher Ochner, PhD, a research scientist in nutrition at Mount Sinai Hospital has been quoted as saying “It’s the healthiest thing I can think of to drink.” Green tea has on average 24-45 mg. of caffeine.

White Tea White tea comes from the buds and leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. The leaves and buds are allowed to wither and dry in natural sunlight. White tea is the least processed of all teas, and has a sweeter, milder flavor than green. The National Cancer Institute reports that both white and green teas contain about the same amount of catechins. White tea has 30-55 mg. of caffeine.

Pu-erh Tea

Oolong tea is a product made from the leaves, buds, and stems of the Camellia sinensis plant. This unique process includes withering the plant under the sun and oxidation before curling and twisting each leaf. Oolong tea is used to sharpen thinking skills and improve mental alertness. Some people use oolong tea to treat diabetes, high cholesterol and skin allergies; and to boost the immune system. Oolong teas have 50-75 mg. of caffeine.

Pu-erh tea is made from the leaves and stems of the Camellia sinensis plant. Pu-erh tea’s processing includes both oxidation and then and aging period under high humidity. And like wine, the longer it ages, the better it is supposed to taste. Pu-erh tea is produced mainly in the Yunnan district in the southwestern part of China and has also gained popularity in Taiwan. Pu-erh is associated with lowering cholesterol and increasing mental alertness. More studies need to be done to prove this. Pu-erh contains 60-70 mg. of caffeine.

ost people seek out a hypnotherapist to help them manage anxiety, depression and fear. In fact, seeking help with fears and phobias is perhaps the most common. Most people don’t know that fears and phobias are two distinct areas of anxiety. A fear is generally considered an emotion that varies in intensity, and is aroused by what would be considered a logical threat. It naturally triggers the fight-flight response i.e. tension, changes in breathing and a strong impulse to escape. Because every person’s suggestibility is dependent on various factors that change throughout the day, a group of people can experience an identical threat, yet only some of them will be suggestible enough at the time to develop a fear response. Many children develop fears because they have less life experience, under-developed powers of reason and are naturally highly suggestible. As they grow older, they grow out of the fear. Sometimes, however the fear is so overwhelming to the child that it carries over into their adult lives. A phobia, on the other hand, is a fear that is uncontrollable. It is excessive, unrealistic or illogical and is elicited by an object, activity or situation. It usually involves strong physiological and emotional responses. A phobia usually starts later in life and most often develops from an unknown cause via The Law of Association. Phobic stimuli that are usually buried deep within the subconscious mind can become associated with a particular event when a person’s

naturally suggestibility is high. Extreme suggestibility can be caused by low blood sugar, excessive stress or a significant trauma that is recent or recurrent. In more serious cases, a phobia will trigger a highly irrational response and the subject will develop compensatory behavior. Think agoraphobia (the fear of going out into public/open places) that exaggerates to the point where the subject no longer can leave the house. The clinical hypno-therapeutic approach to fears and phobias is very different. Using the incorrect technique can be problematic in that it could intensify the issue. A certified, trained hypnotherapist will know how to identify the type of protocol that should be used. Because of recent advances in neuroscience, we are able to identify how our brains can actually re-wire themselves. Most fears and phobias are resolved within one to three hypnotherapy sessions. It is important when choosing a hypnotherapist to contact more than one and ask for a consultation. A good hypnotherapist will explain exactly how the client’s fear or phobia was created and set forth a strategy to resolve them. Gila Zak, C.Ht. is an honors graduate of HMI College of Hypnotherapy. ife in the digital age can be overwhelming. We are constantly bombarded by an overload of information and stimulating images. Life seems to be moving very quickly, too fast sometimes. We begin to feel disconnected from ourselves and can become numb to it all. A prominent spiritual teacher suggests that many people live their lives “one foot ahead of themselves,” always leaning into the next moment, never really settling into the present moment. Life, however, happens only in the present. So what does it mean to become present in life? How do we become more

48

present? For an increasing number of people, meditation is a path to becoming more present. Meditation, as a word, has a broad range of interpretations, meaning different things to different people. In a general, meditation is usually described as some type of activity that is calming or peaceful, such as walking on the beach, sitting in a peaceful place or taking time for quiet reflection. In a more formal traditional sense, meditation is a practice of cultivating awareness, or mindfulness. Or, alternatively, cultivating “being-

ness.” All major spiritual traditions have some type of meditation or reflection practice. In some traditions, it is stressed more than others. Meditation has been at the center of Buddhist practice for almost 2600 years. The Buddhists have had two and half centuries to develop and refine their meditation practice, which is known as mindfulness practice, or insight meditation. While there are other important meditation practices in Buddhism, mindfulness meditation is common to all Buddhist traditions.

In recent years, mindfulness meditation has grown in popularity in mainstream non-Buddhist culture. This appears to be due to the medical community’s interest in the health benefits associated with the practice. It is reported that that it can be very helpful in reducing stress, in managing pain, and lowering blood pressure, among other beneficial effects. However, most people come to meditation for other reasons. People are drawn to it as a way of deepening a spiritual connection, or investigating life’s fundamental existential questions. What is this life about, where everything is constantly changing, and nothing lasts? Why is there nothing to hold to that will not fade away? Why is there so much suffering in the world? For many people, mindfulness meditation is a path to investigating life’s myriad issues and experiences. Mindfulness meditation is a simple, but powerful practice, in cultivating awareness, and developing concentration and mental clarity. The technique is simple--utilize an object, usually the breath, as a reference point. During meditation, our attention, or awareness, is brought to the sensations of breathing. Those sensations are typically experienced at either the nostrils (the sensations of cold air coming in and warm air going out), or in the physical sensations of the rising and falling of the abdomen. The practice is to sustain our attention on the sensations of breathing. However, the mind, as all minds do, will wander, drawn by thoughts, sounds, feelings, judgments, images or physical sensations. When we become aware that our attention has wandered, we gently bring it back to the sensations of breathing. The mind will wander many times during meditation, but it does not matter how many times the mind wanders off. The key point in mindfulness mediation is awakening to the moment that the mind has wandered off the breath. It is important to note that meditation is not thinking or reflection, nor is it about trying to stop thinking or thoughts or feelings. Thoughts, feelings, moods and sensations will arise and pass on their own. In meditation, our job is to simply

bring awareness to the fact that thinking or thoughts or feelings or sensations are happening. We are not concerned with the amount of thinking or the content of the thoughts, feelings or moods, no matter how compelling. We simply note that they are present, and bring our attention back to the sensations of breathing. Nothing that arises in meditation needs to changed or be eliminated. We are not trying to achieve any special mind state or feeling. We may feel peaceful, we may feel restless, we may feel happy, we may feel sad; it doesn’t matter. Meditation is simply being aware of whatever arises, without judgment or resistance. We are cultivating a nonjudgmental witness to the unfolding process of being. While the technique is simple, the practice can be challenging, especially at the beginning. Meditation requires effort, patience, and courage. The obstacles for beginners in mediation are their expectations and ideas about meditation. Beginners want something to happen. We are used to doing something and getting results. Meditation, however, is about being, not doing and achieving. People have the idea that in meditation thinking and thoughts will stop. Or, calmness and peace or blissful mind states will quickly arise. This is usually not the case in the beginning. The first major insight derived from mindfulness meditation is that our minds are quite busy and chaotic, and are constantly jumping from one thought to the next.

This insight can be uncomfortable when we are attached to the idea that we should experience peace and tranquility during meditation. With practice, peace and tranquility do, indeed, arise, along with concentration and clarity of mind. These qualities arise not as goals but as byproducts of a stable still mind. We begin to see that our relationship to what is happening in any given moment is more important than what is actually happening. Meditation, like any endeavor in life, requires practice. It is likened to learning a musical instrument. Initially, our movements are labored and uncoordinated. However, with practice, the more adept we become. It is in the cultivation of awareness that the great benefits of meditation are found. The mind becomes more stable and clear and present. The moment-to-moment experiences of life become more profound with the concentrated clarity of the mind. The experiences, not the ideas, of gratitude, compassion, and joy begin to arise spontaneously. Patrick Crawford has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1989.

ombucha is a refreshing, fermented, sweet and sour tea, loaded with millions of beneficial living microorganisms, and it’s naturally effervescent with a fruity fragrance. It sounds like soda pop but get this, it’s healthy and full of beneficial organic acids, probiotics, and nutrients. Healthy soda pop? Yes! And it gets better: it has been known throughout history as the Tea of Immortality. Kombucha is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts, known as a SCOBY, which feeds on sugar and, in exchange, produces valuable substances that transform the drink into an elixir of glucuronic acid, glucon acid, lactic acid, vitamins, amino acids, antibiotic substances, and some alcohol (typically between 0.5% to 1% depending on the time and temperature at which it is fermented). The health benefits include: antioxidant power, hepato-protective qualities, cancer fighting properties, antimicrobial effects, and help with diabetes, arthritis, cholesterol, gastric ulcers, cellular health, digestion, stronger immune system, healthier skin and nails. The idea is that the Kombucha elixir helps nourish and support the beneficial bacteria and overall health of the human gut-flora. The gut-flora, also known as the micro flora, or gut microbiota, is a complex community of microorganisms that live in the digestive track. A healthy gut flora is key to human health as it has many functions including: digestion of foods and conversion into nutrients, absorption of nutrients, prevention of toxins and

pathogens from entering the body, manufacturing immune cells (70% of them), preventing allergies, and manufacturing two thirds of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters). Therefore, a healthy gut flora is key to maintaining an accurate balance of chemicals for optimum mental and physical health. Though there is still some controversy about the health benefits of Kombucha, it is cheap to buy and easy to make – try it to experience some of these positive effects for yourself. Making kombucha requires a few simple supplies and ingredients: 1 gallon of clean water; 1 cup sugar; 2 tbsp loose tea; 16-32oz unpasteurized, unflavored store-bought kombucha; a 1 gallon glass jar; a rubber band; and a cheese cloth or coffee filter, paper towel, napkin, etc. First, bring water to a boil in a clean pot. Remove from heat and dissolve sugar into it. Second, add the tea and allow to steep while water cools to room temperature (a few hours). Only when the water is at room temperature will it be ready to work with. Third, pour the sweetened tea into your jar, followed by the store-bought kombucha making sure to include any little pieces of the SCOBY that may be at the bottom--these are good. Fourth, cover with a few layers of the tightly woven cloth to keep out bugs and debris and secure with a rubber band. Lastly, set the jar somewhere dark, still, and room temperature (70-75 degrees F, 21-24 C), for 1 to 4 weeks, until a ¼ inch (½ cm) SCOBY has formed. This should look like a cellulose pancake. Feel free to taste the kombucha through out the whole process to find the most desired sweet and sour bubbly taste. If more carbonation is preferred an optional second fermentation is available. To do so, pour the kombucha into bottles, seal and leave at room temperature for 2-3 plus days, the more time, the more carbonation, and then refrigerate. Some important notes: 1) No metal or plastic containers; metal can react with the acidic kombucha and hurt your SCOBY, while plastic can be a potential source of cross contamination. 2) Clean is key; a recurring theme in kombucha brewing is that everything must be clean! We’re creating the perfect environment for good bacterial growth. 3) Temperature plays a role; fermentation goes a bit quicker in warmer temperatures, and a bit slower in colder. 4) No mold zone; if you see any mold growing on your SCOBY or in the tea, throw away your whole batch. It can be difficult to discern at times, but the mold will generally be green, white, or black while the SCOBY is typically a translucent off-white or yellow.

personal environment can have an impact on the world environment at large, and one local organization is working to make nature part of everyday life to create a positive global influence that affects the health of our planet. One With Nature is a collective rooted in the belief that time spent outdoors can create a better world for all through awareness and preservation of nature. Their motto is “Conscious Beyond Convenience.” “We are trying to support active outdoor lifestyles to set a higher respect and standard for the environment,” said Cory Jones, founder and business development for One With Nature. “We have the base belief that the more you go outside, the more connected you are to the world. At that point, you actually see some of the implications of our

consumption habits, and you are more willing to make shifts in your own behavior.” The goal is to get people outdoors whether it be hiking, biking, surfing, paddling, or skateboarding to foster a relationship with our natural surroundings and ultimately develop a thought process engaged in conscious consumption. “It isn’t a scientific fact or anything, but I find there to be a strong correlation between people who go outside consistently and how they consume, or at least an awareness of the implications of their waste and a willingness

to make shifts,” said the 23-year-old. Jones, a communications major at Cal Poly and well-known and respected skateboarder, said that people could have an influence over others simply by doing what they love while setting an example through lifestyle choices that promote saving natural resources. “If you are able to utilize your skill sets, and identify where you are defined as cool within society, then you are able to leverage that to the youth while advancing messages that might influence their behavior,” Jones said. “Then by building that collectivity and guiding it in the direction we should be moving in, legitimate change becomes possible.” With that in mind, One With Nature is collaborating with various non-profits, community members and social media groups to get the message out. continued, page 56

They are currently on trails at Madonna, Reservoir Canyon, Irish Hills, and Johnson Ranch.

“It looks like the city is going to expand that to more of their trails,” said Jones. “It looks like the Land Conservancy is going to implement these signs down at the Pismo Preserve as well.” The organization has also collaborated with local environmental non-profits including Surfrider and ECOSLO to encourage individual cities throughout the county to ban Styrofoam—locally both Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande city councils have approved ordinances.

One With Nature is creating an ever-increasing network of people who share similar core values about preserving habitats and open space while consuming more responsibly with an eye towards creating viable solutions. For example, the group is moving forward with a measure to ban single-use water bottles and implement hydration stations in the San Luis Obispo to enable citizens to opt for reusables more conveniently. “(We are) building up these social media platforms and then leveraging them to generate community support, and then we can take that to the city council and say, ‘This is something the community stands behind.’ It will lead us in a direction, so that we are a little less wasteful,” Jones said. When asked where his passion for the environment comes from, Jones said the motive was born from his childhood where he was raised in Arroyo Grande. “We had very enjoyable youths; I was outside all the time,” he said. “We fell in love with we are from. We understood how much value all of the open space and all the resources that are here for us lead to an incredible life. It started with the gratitude of the lives we were able to live. All this open space adds so much quality to our live’s—I’m not trying to knock future development, that’s not my case—but when I look out at these hillsides, I fully appreciate it for what it is. At that moment, I feel the value it brings to my life and how it gives me perspective of my role in the world.” One With Nature also acts as an environmental marketing agency for like-minded organizations and produces content and connectivity. Currently, they are partnering with another

local startup, Reduce. Reuse. Grow., an organization that developed the Buy a cup, Grow a plant program. The new cups are made with polylactic acid, a plant based material, rather than a traditional polyethylene.

For every cup purchased, Reduce. Reuse. Grow. will provide funds to a restoration group that will plant a plant in the community it originated from. Additionally, One With Nature is working on developing a trail connectivity application that showcases the more than 70 trails throughout the county. “We are really encouraging all forms of outdoor activity, but the trail connectivity is just to help people access our open spaces,” Jones said. Although, One With Nature is promoting a lifestyle over a product, their website sells T-shirts, stickers, and decals to help support the work that they do. staggering 15,000-plus American children will be diagnosed with cancer in 2016. Each child and family will be emotionally and financially overwhelmed. At 30-something, Jenny Mulks Wieneke was devastated by her cancer diagnosis and experiencing pain, fear and depression that simple pleasures would soon be taken away. But maybe most difficult was the separation anxiety while away from her son, Gabriel. “Children should be playing games and going to school,” she said. “They shouldn’t have to face a life and death diagnosis or sign medical papers for doctors to amputate a limb. I was in-shape and financially secure with good insurance. Co-workers and family were my strength. Many children don’t have these resources.” Her personal journey inspired her to create Along Comes Hope, a nonprofit that would support children with cancer. Seeds were planted when her son was 3-months old. “We spent several months taking Gabriel to Stanford Medical to stabilize the ventricles in his head,” said Jenny. “While there, I’d see other children by themselves and realized not all parents could take leave from their jobs or duties at home to stay at the hospital.”

Jenny was a top pharmaceutical sales representative and valued manager. “My co-workers were my other family,” she said. The company allowed her flexibility throughout her son’s earlier health issues, her divorce, her mother’s cancer and then her own battle with cancer.

At the top of her sales productivity Jenny was regularly experiencing stomach pain. Testing unfounded, the diagnosis was stress. “I could push through my pain,” she said. At a sales meeting in Monterey Jenny’s competitive nature became a blessing in disguise. She strained her neck winning a hula-hoop contest and was forced to call a friend and chiropractor, Dr. Peter Reese. Never having treated her, he was bound to take full body x-rays.

“He showed me the big egg on my right lower abdomen.” More tests and an ultra sound discovered one liver lobe wasn’t working and the other was barely functioning. She and her mom were joking when the doctor came in to confirm a massive cancerous tumor and recommended she put her life in order. She might live a year. “I was stunned as much by the diagnosis as the doctor’s attitude. I had never experienced the patient side of my business. I realized how a child might feel with a sudden death sentence. I had to become my own advocate.” The battle for survival began locally with diagnostic radiologist, Dr. Stephen Holtzman, and oncologist, Dr. Thomas J. Spillane. “They were wonderful, but advised if I wanted a chance to win the fight I needed treatment outside the county. I didn’t want to leave Gabriel. He was only four, but for Gabriel’s sake I had to.” She chose M.D. Cancer Center in Houston. “Immediately I felt I had made the right decision. A lot of miracles come out of that place.” Surgeries were done in Houston while chemotherapy treatments happened in San Luis Obispo until she was too weak to

theconscioushealthcoach.com travel. While recovering in Houston she was encouraged to walk the 7-acre campus. She’d wander the two children’s hospitals and realized how scary it was for them to be away from home battling cancer. She also realized she needed to involve Gabriel in her survival quest. “Children are born with intuition,” she explained. “If children are not encouraged to follow their hunches they grow up not trusting their instincts. My bedtime story was ‘Mommy has a poisonous bubble and needs liquid gold and holy water in her stomach.’ One night Gabriel said he could tell the bubble was getting smaller. And it was.” Meanwhile, another lesson Jenny learned was to accept help from friends. Co-worker Jill Whitebook rallied friends to donate $17,000, which Jenny didn’t think she needed, but discovered several incidentals are not covered by insurance. And although the company welcomed her back once recovered in 2013, she was compelled to resign and dedicate her time and resources to create and operate Along Comes Hope. “God left me here for some reason,” she decided. continued, page 60

The nonprofit has helped more than 223 children and their families and over 25,000 more have been exposed to Jenny’s educational programs. Financial assistance for travel and accommodations has been provided if treatment is away from home. Music and art therapy programs are offered while the child is in the hospital. And Jenny conducts advocacy presentations in Washington, DC and wherever she is invited. Hope the Bear, a soft, cuddly plush toy with a button in its paw to record messages by family and friends, is her most effective comforter for both children and families. It’s also popular among donors. Colors of Hope is an 80-page coloring book and journal allowing the child time for whimsy and creativity that inspires their journey to recovery and becomes a keepsake. Personal gifting and company advertising is available.

Along Comes Hope provides financial and emotional support for pediatric cancer patients. “No child should have to face cancer alone, and no family should be away from their child’s side.”

Jenny’s major funding has been her personal savings, however, now she is expanding her network to reach more donors to join her cause, including NASCAR drivers Joe Nemechek and his son John Hunter Nemechek. The website www. alongcomeshope.com and social media sources like Facebook have details and updates about opportunities and purchasing Hope merchan-

“God drops angels into my path every day,” says Jenny. “Just when you think it’s no longer possible… Along Comes Hope.”

Hikes You Don’t Want to Miss

Sycamore Ridge After having my son, I wanted to find a way to lose my baby weight without having to hire a babysitter. Hiking seemed like the perfect solution - I could strap my kid on my back and get my sweat on. Sycamore Ridge became my go-to spot because it is a short enough not to drive an active baby/toddler nuts but still able to offer stunning views and a great workout. (According to my app, the ž mile climb from Sycamore Mineral Springs is equivalent to approximately 48 stories!) As my son got older (and I got stronger), I was able to extend my hike along the Ontario Ridge trail and down into Shell Beach which added on the miles as well as prolonged the view. Even though I now hit the trail solo, it still remains one of my favorite local hikes. No matter how many times I venture up there, the view always makes my heart jump and reminds me how lucky I am to live here. Jamie Maraviglia-Manalo

Irish Hills I spend most of my free time running trails in the Irish Hills. This trail network offers seemingly endless combinations for out and backs or loop hikes. With a few trailheads to choose from, access is easy for mountain bikers, hikers and runners. Access is easy from Prefumo Canyon, Madonna Road, Froom Ranch, or even the newer connection from the Johnson Ranch trail. These trails are great for everyone from families with small children to those looking for a more intense workout. So, from a difficulty perspective there really is something for everyone from short and relatively flat to long and strenuous. Not a single vista leaves you unrewarded for your effort. The Froom Creek trail is perhaps the most seasonal of any in the city, with flowing water and even a waterfall in winter and early spring, while the Ocean View trail (pictured), offers some of the best views from sunrise to sunset. There’s a great combination of narrow, more single-track trails and wide trails, and while poison oak may be present, it’s certainly not as prevalent as many other local hikes. Josh Haring

Cerro Alto My favorite spot to hike is Cerro Alto. It is a remote, steep, 7-mile round trip with a spectacular view of all 7 summits. Never hike alone and bring 2-3 bottles of water and food as well as warm clothes as a back up. Hiking poles are a must and hiking shoes are better than trail shoes. To get there, access Cerro Alto campground off Highway 41 and Highway 1, 3-miles north of Bixby Bridge Ralph Gorten

I

am a sometimes lazy active girl. I’ll teach a barre class and then head straight for In ‘n Out before I keep up with the Kardashians from bed. I teach indoor cycling but don’t ride outside (shhh!) I moved back to SLO in 2013 after over 15 years in Los Angeles and San Francisco; and although I’ve always considered myself a big city girl I have truly found home in this beautiful and supportive community. There’s just one thing keeping me from being a true “slocal”--I haven’t taken full advantage of the area’s natural beauty. The quintessential Central Coast lifestyle includes getting outside as much as possible: hiking, biking, surfing, kayaking, fishing, and my new favorite, stand up paddle boarding, or SUP as we experts call it. It is the perfect gateway activity to get comfortable out on the water. My friends at Tolosa Press sent me to The Paddleboard Company in Morro Bay for my first attempt at the increasingly popular activity.

The Paddleboard Company opened in August 2015 and is gearing up for their first summer. Owner Sandi Twist has one employee, plus help from her husband, co-owner Ken Twist, and their two children, but essentially she runs a onewoman show. In preparation, Sandi watched the weather daily hoping for calm, beautiful conditions, which we found on an early Friday morning. When I arrived she unloaded the Boga Yoga board I would use on my maiden voyage. Large and sturdy, Boga Yoga boards are often used for SUP Yoga and are much more forgiving for a beginner.

Experience Holistic Physical Therapy

“My hand and neck pain has decreased considerably. The exercises in therapy and practiced at home are helping me improve my posture and body mechanics. ‘Hands-on’ therapy and low level lasers are very helpful.”

Sandi shows me some yoga on her wooden demo board.

Sandi sent me down to the dock to wait for the gear, and I must admit I was nervous! Even on calm Morro Bay, there’s something about the unpredictability of water. Before we set off I got a 15-minute tutorial including the importance of a wide stance, how to best use the paddle, to keep an eye on the horizon, and how to kneel down should a nearby boat cause any ripples. I stood on the board and got my bearings. It was indeed forgiving, and I felt secure though acutely aware of the unsteadiness beneath me. “Go ahead and paddle out, I’ll catch up with you,” Sandi said. continued, page 66

Owner Sandi Twist strikes a pose. Apprehension gave way to confidence with each stroke, and soon she was by my side reinforcing paddling technique and engaging me in conversation. Much like at the doctor’s office, the pleasant banter relaxed me, and I took in the view.

If you’re already a pro and crave a more treacherous experience, I suggest joining The Paddleboard Company as they co-host the SUP division for the 23 mile Zongo Cup race from Morro Rock to Avila Pier. The race is one of three events they host this summer as they aim to connect the community through the sport. Learn more about their events, rentals, and beautiful products at thepaddleboardcompany.com.

We meandered around eclectic boats before I had a stare down with a sea lion to my right.

As I learned about paddle boarding, I got significantly more comfortable and began to truly appreciate the allure of outdoor sports. As a fitness instructor at health clubs I draw inspiration from music and normally can’t function without it. However, taking in the sights and sounds of Morro Bay was a refreshing change of pace of mind and a great workout for the core and shoulders. Plus, fresh air is awesome. We made our way back to the dock with the wind at our backs and all was well. Sandi took me from apprehensive to I got this in less than an hour and if you’re willing- she can get you there too.

“Don’t mind him, he’s just curious,” Sandi assured me. To my left, an adorable family of otters floated in a little cluster with their bellies up. As we continued she enlightened me about the versatility of the fast-growing sport. One can take a pleasant cruise, venture out to more challenging terrain, or even incorporate sprints and interval training. SUP-Yoga has gained popularity as of late and Sandi, a certified yoga instructor and personal trainer, teaches it at The Paddleboard Company on Sunday mornings.
