While those soft hues evoked a calm environment, Pantone’s Greenery is full of new beginnings and excitement. The lush, bright color is reminiscent of the springtime green mountains we on the Central Coast are so fortunate to enjoy. It’s no surprise that Pantone describes Greenery as a color to
“Revive, Restore, Renew.” By using Greenery in our home decor we can head into 2017 with a fresh, new outlook on how we feel about our home. It may be as simple as adding some new indoor plants or as bold as adding a few furniture pieces in this lively color. Tips for designing your outdoor space By Mari Robeson, Interior Designer

ave you ever wondered how to style your bookshelf in a way that was interesting and uncluttered the way that the professionals do? Once you know these simple tricks you’ll be able to dress up your bookshelf in a way that will make you happy every time you look at it. What you’ll need; first of all your favorite books. Books are the anchor of your display. Look around your home and gather objects that have meaning to you and that you enjoy looking at. Some suggestions for this might be; decorative boxes, objects of interest, photos of loved ones, art pieces in different sizes, bookends, baskets, tall accent pieces, small accent pieces and something living such as plants or flowers. Clear off everything on your shelf and think about working in layers. Start with your large books and objects first select one impactful piece for each shelf. This could be a tall vase, sculpture or piece of art. Large books do best if they are placed on their side which reduces the stress on their spine. You may also want to consider working with a color theme in mind. In this case, blue and white vases and bowls. This creates a visual flow that is aesthetically pleasing. The back of your bookshelf can also be a fun place for a pop of unexpected color. Wallpaper can also be added to the back wall of the shelves for added pizazz. Even a pretty gift wrap paper will do with a little Modpodge to adhere it to the back of the shelf. Fill in the space with your smaller items. Use boxes or sturdy objects as an alternative for book ends. Display your art with books horizontally in front of it. Even some book jackets are a work of art and can be used as an alternative instead of a print or painting. Lean the book against your shelf with the cover facing out as you would a piece of art.

Build platforms with books of like sizes to display your objects of art. The bookshelf is also a great place to display your favorite collections. Create an interesting story by displaying collections, such as sea shells that coordinate with books about the sea. Another idea is to consolidate books by color or cover them all with paper jackets of a single color. Adding a green plant or a lovely bouquet of flowers adds beauty and life to your display.
