Quick facts Energy Consumption Reduction

Energy Saving In 2007 Camfil Limited embarked upon a campaign to save energy under the banner of CEASE (Camfil Energy Awareness Saves Environment) and have achieved significant reductions in energy usage and improvements in energy efficiency resulting in the company saving some £200K on energy bills through minimal cost, self-funding opportunities. Two main categories of energy usage have been identified: Logistics Fuel Electricity Top 10 Energy Saving Tips “Just Do It’s” 1. Reduce lighting where possible and take advantage of natural daylight. 2. Install occupancy sensors. 3. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which can last up to ten times longer.

The charts below demonstrate the savings that have been achieved and these can be summarised as follows: 2008 2009 2010 2011 Logistics Fuel -23% -7% +1% Electricity -14% -8% -8% -6% The total energy used by the company (electricity, gas and logistics fuel) has been converted to CO2e and savings are as follows: 2008 2009 2010 2011 Energy tCO2e -16% -7% -3% 1200000

4. Replace incandescent lights in exit signs with LED fixtures.

7. Turn off or set office equipment to power down when not in use. 8. Lower the thermostat on your water heater. 9. Invest in energy-efficient equipment such as low energy air filters. 10. Call Camfil Limited about our energy efficiency filters and services.

5. Adjust the thermostat down in the winter and up in the summer and shut off when not in use.

During the energy saving journey the need to “practice what we preach” was identified and the company implemented a formalisation of the CEASE energy management system. Camfil Ltd were the first manufacturing company in the UK to achieve registration to BS EN16001 and the first to transition to the new international Energy Management System standard ISO50001. In September 2010 the BSI carried out an independent verification of the energy savings achieved resulting in the company being awarded the Energy Reduction Verification (ERV) Kitemark. The requirement was for a saving of 2.5% to be demonstrated over the compliance years. The actual saving demonstrated was 14.5%. Camfil Limited were the first company in the world to achieve registration under the ERV Kitemark

Quick facts Sustainable Manufacturing

Waste Reduction In 2007 Camfil Limited implemented a Lean Manufacturing philosophy to identify, address and remove wastes of all types from production operations. A management system under the heading of The Green Tornado was implemented which has as its cornerstone engagement of teams in “continuous improvement”.

Top 10 Waste Reduction Tips “Just Do It’s” 1. Know your waste – understand what your wastes are and how much waste you produce. 2. Keep up-to-date with new and existing waste legislation and ensure compliance. 3. Educate everyone in your company about your waste management systems. 4. Label and/or colour code bins appropriately.

Building on the Camfil Farr pillars Customer Satisfaction, Reliability, Teamwork, Commitment and Local Presence the Green Tornado sets objectives of Safety, Quality & Environment, Delivery and Cost. These objectives set the priorities for operational departmental managers who then developed their teams in the areas of competence development, continuous improvement, standardisation and visual management. Through this development and engagement of the teams they have been able to make significant contributions to waste reduction through their second priority area of environment. Working under the guidance of the Green Tornado and applying the waste management hierarchy of Prevention, Re-Use, Recycle, Recover, Disposal and utilising lean techniques including 5S and 8 Wastes (TIM WOODS), significant reductions in waste materials created at source have been realised. The chart below demonstrates the savings that have been achieved and can be summarised as follows: 2008 -22%

2009 -24%

2010 -14%

2011 -9%

5. Look for opportunities to exchange waste (for example pallets or cardboard boxes) with neighbours and suppliers. 6. Purchase products with a high recycled content where ever possible. 7. Send spent photocopier, fax and printer cartridges for remanufacturing. 8. Ensure that photocopiers, fax machines and printers do not produce unwanted header or report sheets. 9. Use both side printing and copying where ever possible.

Whilst implementing these continuous improvement opportunities Camfil Limited have by applying the waste management hierarchy identified avenues that allow those remaining waste materials to be recycled. Year on Year the amount of waste diverted from landfill by recycling has increased as follows: 2008 43%

2009 46%

2010 52%

2011 57%
