Introduction Ventive PVHR is a Passive Ventilation system with Heat Recovery. It provides a continuous supply of fresh air to the house pre-warming it with the heat extracted from the outgoing stale air. It achieves this passively, without the use of electricity. It also has no moving parts or electronic components that would result in noise or maintenance requirements of mechanical ventilation systems. Ventive prevents the occurrence of condensation and mould in homes keeping the indoor air free of pollutants such as carbon dioxide, VOCs and excess humidity. It creates a healthy indoor environment while keeping it warm. By doing so it allows excellent levels of airtightness without compromising on indoor air quality or energy efficiency.

Application Ventive uses two abundant forces of nature - passive stack effect (warm air rising) and wind, to silently drive temperate fresh air into the building. In traditional properties it can utilise existing chimney breasts as air channels to simplify retrofit installation.

Ventive can also be used for new buildings as the sole ventilation measure continuously providing fresh, pre-warmed air to every room. Both with existing and new buildings, reasonable airtightness is required for optimum heat recovery efficiency.

Installation Ventive S: Single PVHR unit retrofitted into chimneys Installation of Ventive S takes approximately half a day per unit, depending on site conditions and access. Two flexible ducts are pulled through the chimney with the lower grill or fireplace acting as a supply vent and the new opening at high level acting as exhaust. In general, reqirements range from two to six units depending on the size of the house or its airtightness. Please refer to Ventive S Installation Manual for more details.

Ventive S+: PVHR unit with twin duct for retrofit & new build Installation of Ventive S+ takes approximately 6 hours per unit depending on complexity (with new build projects being quicker and easier to integrate than retrofits). Separate 200x60mm ducts are run for each flow channel with the heat exchanger mounted in the loft space. Please refer to Ventive S+ Installation Manual for more details.


Ventive and Social Landlords Our Passive Ventilation system with Heat Recovery provides a low maintenance solution to condensation and mould, lowering energy bills for the tenant and improving the energy efficiency of the property.

Condensation, mould and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Condensation-related workload adds to operational cost. With dedicated staff and both planned and responsive maintenance programmes set up to deal with the issue, hidden condensation related expenditure may exceed 10% of a Landlord’s annual budget. Quite often the reactive measure is to draught proof and insulate the building in order to prevent heat loss and reduce cold surfaces where condensation occurs. On its own this will have a detrimental effect on air quality and in some cases may exacerbate the damp problem. Conversely, using crude ventilation methods such as extract fans will reduce savings from energy efficiency measures in place.

The true cost of the wrong solution Until now, less sophisticated solutions such as Mechanical Extract or Positive Input Ventilation have been used to treat condensation issues, using electricity to drive warm air out of the home and draw cold air in, with tenants reporting cold draughts and noise. This approach increases household energy use which is paid for by the tenant, a vulnerable demographic already facing rising fuel bills and a higher cost of living. The commonly seen result is tenants switching off or blocking up mechanical devices to deal with draughts, noise or perceived cost, negating the effectiveness of the installation and impacting on their health and the fabric of the building. Ventive resolves this airtightness and air quality conundrum by creating a healthy indoor environment at no cost to the tenant without lifestyle changes and without any additional maintenance or servicing requirement of the Landlord.


Case Study South Essex Homes have chosen Ventive S+ PVHR units for Peartree Close flats as part of the “Really Smart House” refurbishment scheme in Southend-on-Sea. Each apartment also received improved insulation, new glazing, LED lighting and a new heating system.

The main objective was to provide the occupants with the lowest maintenance heat recovery ventilation and Ventive offered the best solution. This is enabling South Essex Homes to impact on local fuel poverty and to improve their tenants’ indoor environment at the same time. The project was completed in July 2013 and the tenants have reported a noticeable improvement in the comfort of their homes, which now feel warmer, fresher and healthier while saving them money on fuel bills. Performance Data Buoyancy Driven Flow Ventive PVHR has been tested in various installation and operation scenarios including both airtight and standard homes as well as with opened or closed windows (as seen on the graph on the right). Without wind assistance the air exchange rate reaches approximately 1 per hour when the temperature difference between inside and outside is above 10째C.

Annual Ventilation Rates Ventive delivers the optimal amount of fresh air across the seasons; the graph below demonstrates the average annual performance of a typical Ventive installation charted against the requirements of Building Regulations (AD-F). The higher the number of Ventive systems installed in the house, the higher the overall ventilation rate. Smaller homes will require fewer systems to achieve good indoor air quality.


Heat Recovery

Ventive reduces fuel bills by recovering most of the heat energy from the outgoing air. Tests conducted by Imperial College London have shown that heat recovery efficiency is as high as 95% with the system saving over 80% of energy even at high ventilation rates. This typically translates into 4,000kWh of heating savings per year, which in practice means fresh, healthy and comfortable homes with much reduced fuel bills (providing on average ÂŁ200 heating and up to ÂŁ100 electricity savings per year).
