St. Mary’s

An island of great, sprawling walks, impressive military heritage, and the heart of Scillonian life –it’s the largest inhabited island on the Isles of Scilly and is likely to be your first introduction to the islands. Bursting full of life and the starting point for island hopping, explore the many art galleries, eateries, and shops for a spot of island culture.

Take to the sea Sheltered coves and gentle waters makes St. Mary’s the perfect spot to try water-based activities such as guided sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering. Hire a boat and explore the off islands, or board a “tripper” boat and get your fix of wildlife and life on the sea.

GETTING AROUND The entire island is approximately 3 miles by 2 miles, so nothing is very far away. Walking the entire coastline, punctuated with lovely cafés, is less than 10 miles in length. There are stunning walks through the middle of the island, taking you through nature reserves and woodland, fields of scented flowers and vineyards, and past road-side honesty stalls.
