2 Foreword

Located 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall and out into the Atlantic Ocean, the archipelago of islands that are the Isles of Scilly make for a truly distinctive destination, quite unlike anywhere else in England. The islands present a spectacular land and seascape that are as unique in their beauty as they are fascinating in their culture and island life within.

Scilly’s cultural offer is both rich and varied, reflecting its long and proud history. From shipwrecks to treasure and from burial chambers to deserted villages, the history of Scilly is utterly compelling – especially as it mingles so tantalisingly with modern-day life on the islands. Scilly’s cultural heritage naturally revolves around the sea and the traditional pastimes of farming, fishing and pilot gig rowing – all of which prosper on the islands to this day - something that all Scillonian families are proud of. All of this, along with contemporary island life, provides inspiration and raw material for artists and creative people of all kinds. The islands have a vibrant creative and artistic community that belie their small size. In fact the Isles of Scilly have been a source of inspiration for generations so it’s no surprise that they continue to attract artists, musicians and writers due to their peaceful, magical and almost other worldly qualities. From exquisite silver jewellery to stunning fine art collections, from fired earthenware and stained glass to lino-cut prints and silk scarves, creativity abounds on every island, inspired by the stunning surroundings. Resident and visiting artists paint in beach studios, landscape

photographers capture changing moods, beachcombers make jewellery, musicians create Scilly soundscapes and writers weave island stories. The Isles of Scilly Museum on St. Mary’s is a veritable treasure trove with a popular and highly regarded collection of historical artefacts and exhibits that tell the stories of island life and our maritime history. From the traditions of May Day to local craft workshops and from the famous gig racing championships to Scilly’s very own folk, art and music festivals, the present day cultural offer reflects the local customs and creativity of a community shaped and inspired by these most special of islands. Touring acts and artists also make welcome pilgrimages to Scilly, enabling residents and visitors alike to enjoy a wide range of cultural events. This Arts Guide is designed to celebrate and share the wealth of creative activity on the islands. Many artists show work in the local galleries and studios on the Isles of Scilly - some of whom also run courses and workshops throughout the year. Others have websites and links where you can find out more about them and their work. We hope you will enjoy exploring all of the creativity that Scilly has to offer.

Rough Island Band MUSIC

The Rough Island Band began life on St. Agnes in 2009 when an island piper whistled in the wind for three musicians in love with the place and its people, whose disparate musical experiences and distinctive voices came together on Scilly to record a highly personal album in a windswept island cottage. Nearly ten years on, there are four RIB albums, all of which reflect a feeling that a community's stories and history should be reflected and celebrated in music: tales of shipwreck and rescue, tunes for dancing, and evocations of landscape are all part of a steadily developing island music written in response to an extraordinary place. roughislandband.com roughislandband@hotmail.com

St. Mary's Library LITERATURE

St. Mary's Library is a fantastic community facility located on Porthcressa seafront. It is easy to join and membership is free. Visitors may also take out temporary membership during their stay. The library was opened in 2013 and forms part of a significant regeneration project on Porthcressa. The design, featuring natural stone and sustainably sourced timber, was in response to an environmentally sensitive area, re-using the former lifeboat house. The library hosts regular events and supports book launches and readings for work connected to Scilly. A bespoke section in the library provides a fascinating glimpse into Scilly's place in print over the years as well as regular local publications and recent press coverage. The Isles of Scilly have provided inspiration and a wealth of source material for fiction and non-fiction writers over the years. As tourism developed, a range of charming guide books emerged promoting the character and qualities of the islands, variously encouraging visitors to explore the coastline, undertake adventurous expeditions by boat and appreciate the peace and magic. More specialist factual books detail the wildlife, historical significance and extraordinary maritime heritage of Scilly. And of course, novels and anthologies of poetry by significant authors cover themes ranging from ghost sightings on the Garrison to honesty boxes, figureheads and lighthouses. This list includes some of the more recent published authors whose work has been inspired by or based on the Isles of Scilly; for a more comprehensive list see www.scillypedia.co.uk

56 About

This Arts Guide is produced by Creative Islands, an initiative funded by Arts Council England and led by the Islands’ Partnership. Creative Islands is one of 16 national Cultural Destinations projects which all aim to create partnerships between the culture and tourism sectors, and encourage more people to experience arts and culture in visitor destinations. Here on the Isles of Scilly we are working with a local consortium involving the islands’ artistic and cultural community. We are finding new ways of celebrating and sharing Scilly’s culture, including developing and enhancing the creative people, events, heritage and places already here – many of which feature in this Arts Guide. We are also using culture and creativity as a way of celebrating and sharing Scilly’s distinctiveness, enabling visitors and residents to find new and imaginative ways of experiencing its special character. Creative Islands projects include artist residencies, creative contributions to events such as Walk Scilly and Taste of Scilly, a Young Curators project with local young people, and creative breaks offering opportunities for people to develop their own skills through working with professional artists.
