Welcome from our sponsor Welcome to the 2022 World Pilot Gig Championships!
O Kevin Sherris Chair, WPGC Committee
n behalf of the organising committee, a very warm welcome to you all at the 2022 WPGC. It’s great to be back after a two-year absence and we look forward to a weekend of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and celebration in the true spirit of gig rowing.
Fixed seat rowing has come a long way since we staged the first Championships in 1990, more than 3 decades ago when we had 19 gigs on the start line and ‘tongue in cheek’ called it the ‘World Pilot Gig Championships’, but now it has become a truly international event and continues to grow with new clubs forming yearly. The new format this year sees us starting the racing on Friday morning with the additional races incorporated into the event, ensuring a more competitive schedule for the Vets and Super Vets.
Please note that all coxswains must attend the cox’s meeting, so they are aware of the changes made to the schedule, format and rules! Thanks to all our many sponsors. We are delighted to have Sharp's Brewery on board as our new headline sponsor this year. A special thanks as always to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group for taking the mammoth logistical job of shipping gigs and supplies in their stride. The voluntary effort from everyone on the committee, the marshals and all those involved is amazing, my thanks to each and every one of you; you all play a vital part in making this event happen. So welcome rowers and supporters, the 31st Championships have kept us waiting long enough! We are looking forward to catching up with old friends and new and eagerly await some competitive racing. If you are taking part, row hard, row fair and row your best, see you on the start line. All the best and good luck!
W
e are very proud to be sponsoring the World Pilot Gig Championships for the first time in 2022. Sharp’s Brewery is based just a short distance from the Camel Estuary in North Cornwall, home of the infamous Doom Bar sandbank which has inspired our flagship beer. We count ourselves very fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle in the Cornish elements and there have been a number of gig rowers among our brewery team in Rock over the years. We have, for many years, supported local gig clubs and the communities that surround them so we are delighted to be an integral part of the action on the Isles of Scilly in this very exciting comeback year for the competition. We can’t wait to cheer on all the rowers who’ve worked so hard training for the championships, and enjoy an action packed weekend on the beautiful islands with a pint of Doom Bar. Good luck to everyone taking part!

A warm welcome from the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group
A
fter a two-year absence I’m thrilled to welcome rowers, fans, family, and friends back to the Isles of Scilly for the 31st World Pilot Gig Championships. The Championships are the islands’ headline event, and it has been our great pleasure to serve them and support you from the very beginning. Over the last three decades, Scillonian III and the Gry Maritha have transported gigs to and from St. Mary’s thousands of times; these days we start shipping gigs to St. Mary’s in February and will continue returning them to the mainland into June. It’s a tremendous operation and we thank everyone who works with our freight department to make it happen. We passed an extraordinary milestone during the Championships’ enforced hiatus; the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group celebrated its centenary in 2020. Yes, we’ve proudly served the islands’ businesses and visitors for over 100 years and last year we announced exciting plans to build new passenger and freight vessels to serve the islands’ future needs.
Ian Howard Chairman, Isles of Scilly Steamship Group
I hope you enjoy your voyage to Scilly on the Scillonian or with Skybus and look forward to a tremendous few days of gig racing. I wish the very best of luck to everyone racing and to those cheering on friends and family.

2: SATURDAY – THE LONG RACE! Saturday is finals day for the Vets and Super Vets, beginning with the Ladies' Vets final racing in from Nut Rock. This is closely followed by the Ladies' Super Vets and, an hour later, the Men’s. The Open races begin with the Ladies rowing out to St. Agnes for a 12:30 start. This is followed at 14:00 by the Men’s. In both races, over 120 gigs will be rowing quite a spectacle as they approach St. Mary’s. Similar to the Vets and Super Vets, they are put into groups of 12 depending on their position.
Your guide to the champs weekend
Round 2 begins at 15:15 for the Ladies and 17:00 for the Men’s. 3: SUNDAY – TWO UP, TWO DOWN
I
Sunday begins with the Ladies' Round 3 at 10:00 and the Men’s at 11:45. The finals take place at 13:30 and 15:30 respectively.
f you’re a first-time visitor or frequent participant of this event, our useful step-by-step guide is all you’ll need to make the most of your time here, from where the races start and finish, to best places to take in this spectacle, and how the scoring works… 1: FRIDAY - VETS DAY Racing starts on Friday at 11:30 with the Ladies Veterans (see timetable on page 14). Like all round one races, gigs are arranged alphabetically on the start line just off St. Agnes. Subsequent rounds and the finals begin by Nut Rock near Tresco. As the gigs cross the finishing line at St. Mary’s Harbour, their position is ranked so that they can be placed into groups: the first 12 gigs to cross the finish line go into Group A, the second 12 gigs are put into Group B, the third 12 gigs into Group C, and so on. By the end of the day, all Men’s and Ladies’ Vets and Super Vets have completed round two.
In the group races, the lowest Group starts first in a continuing procession of races through to Group A race. The crews that come first or second in their races, move up to the Group above; those crews that come last or second last go down a Group. 4: RAISE YOUR OARS FOR THE FINALS! After the finals race in each category, the gigs come together, raising their oars in St. Mary’s Harbour to celebrate the new World Champions. 5: SCORE BOARD The score board is on Holgate’s Green and displays those teams that have moved up and down, as well as the starting line-up for the next race. Where crews come in their Group races also determines their place
on the starting line for the next race…the higher up you come in your races, the better your next starting spot. (Dependent on wind and tides.) 6: TOP VANTAGE POINTS If you want to be really close to the action, the best place to be is on a tripper boat, which you can hop on from St. Mary’s Quay. They do an amazing job of being where the action is and the fantastic atmosphere on the boats is second to none. The tripper boats go out for each of the long races and the rounds. You can get back to shore between the rounds but do be warned; you might find yourself on the water longer than you think, so wrap up warm. For land lovers, a great place to watch the Long Races is on the Garrison. Or just off Rat Island, St. Mary’s Quay, which is very close to the finish line. The coastline along from Juliet’s Garden is also a good vantage point for an overview of the Nut Rock races but bring your binoculars! Head into Hugh Town and onto Holgate’s Green at any time during the weekend to soak up the incredible atmosphere and to see the results.

Return of the champs - first memories & favourite moment
MICHELLE OYLER, TRESCO & BRYHER ROWING CLUB
HANNAH WALDER, ST. MARTIN’S ROWING CLUB
In 1981, when I was 14, Bruce Christopher told me it was about time I was in the gig crew. So, as you didn't argue with Bruce, I started gig racing in the Czar. Later that year we founded Tresco & Bryher Rowing Club and started fundraising for a club gig. I rowed a couple of seasons in the Czar, then a couple in the new Men-a-Vaur, then, when working on St. Mary's, a couple in the Serica which included being the first ladies crew to row to the mainland and winning the Cornish Champs.
I holidayed on Scilly throughout my childhood staying in the chalet next to where I now live - we always followed the gig races. I’d never rowed though, so when Merryn asked me if I’d like to come and have a row in Bristol I was really keen (guess I would have been around 30). I practiced with the novice crew (even though it was a 2 hour round trip from my then home in Bath).
A
It was with most of that Serica crew that I won the World Champs in 1991 - a somewhat smaller event in those days! I've had lots of World Champs rowing fun with Tresco & Bryher Rowing Club over the years but my favourite memory is of course winning the Vets World Champs in 2011 - such an achievement for our little club.
much-loved sport of the islanders, we celebrate 31 years of the World Pilot Gig Championships by sharing treasured memories, the highs and lows, and camaraderie of ardent islanders who demonstrate tireless passion, from all corners of Scilly….
I went to the first gig championships not expecting to row, but ended up doing so. After that I did a summer of regattas in Cornwall. Soon after I moved to Scilly to be with my (now) husband Andrew and found joining the gig club a great way to meet people.
REBECCA WILLIAMS, ST MARY’S GIG CLUB I first got involved in gig rowing in 2009 – so a relative new-comer! I rowed my first inter-island race in the Bonnet and never looked back. It’s such a privilege rowing in Scilly – the scenery and heritage of gig rowing on the islands makes it really special. My favourite memory is from my first ever Champs. The St. Agnes race. Seat 2 in the mighty Nornour! Lining up with the other 200 or so gigs and taking it all in on the start line. Then to hear the thud of the pins and clash of the paddles. Just wow!

The Scilly Pilot Gig: A brief history 1666 Royal Oak is wrecked in a storm. St. Mary’s gigs rescue the survivors over 52 hours later – the first account of a gig assisting a shipwreck. 1880s Due to the industrial revolution, there is a decline in the use of sail and oar. Motorised lifeboats replace rowing lifeboats over the coming years. 1829 Eight and ten oared gigs are banned by HM Customs and Excise for being too fast for the excise cutters to catch smugglers. 1848 Around 200 men are working as pilots on the Isles of Scilly. 1938 The last paid pilot in history to be delivered under oar, Jack Hicks from St. Agnes, is put aboard the SS Foremost by the gig Gypsy.
1950s The start of the pilot gig revival, as unused Scilly gigs are bought and restored by Newquay Rowing Club. 1952 The Cornish Rowing Association is formed. 1955 Gigs are used as lifeboats for the last time according to modern records. Gig Sussex comes to the rescue of SS Mando, aground on Golden Ball Bar in thick seaweed – oars succeed where propellers fail. 1960 Shah, Bonnet and Golden Eagle return to the Isles from Newquay and regular rowing starts to take place. 1967-1971 Three new gigs are built for the islands – Serica, Dolphin and Nornour.
1986-1987 The Cornish Pilot Gigs Association is formed and a standard design for new gigs is agreed – based on the gig Treffry (1838). 1990 The first official World Pilot Gig Championships takes place on St. Mary’s, with only 19 boats and a few clubs taking part. 2019 The 30th Anniversary World Pilot Gig Championship attracts a record number of crews – more than 160 gigs line up on the start lines. 2022 The 31st Annual World Pilot Gig Championship takes place 29th April – 1st May.

s a result of the pandemic which saw the cancellation of the World Championships on the Isles of Scilly for two consecutive years, a few clubs, despite forming and becoming members of the CPGA in 2019-2021, have yet to visit the Isles of Scilly Champs, so this is their first!

EPICGIGABILITY
Porlock Weir joined the CPGA in 2019. Based in Somerset, they have a glorious setting for their home training ground with the Exmoor landscape as a backdrop, the Somerset coastline and out into the Bristol Channel. They have grown steadily since their formation in 2018 and own two gigs ‘Circe’ and ‘Goose’, both built by Andrew Nancarrow.
EpicGigability joined the CPGA in 2021. Based on the River Fal, the club was formed to provide a pathway for all service veterans to have a healthy and active life away from the services. They own their gig ‘Epic Energy’ which was a gig commissioned by the CPGA. The build was undertaken by Falmouth Marine College and very much mirrored the build of ‘Energy’ by Falmouth Technical College in the 1980s.
AFFINITY Affinity joined the CPGA in 2021. Based on the Denton Island, Newhaven, East Sussex. The club row on the River Ouse, from Newhaven Harbour and have the Sussex coastline to enjoy. They own the gig ‘Grace o’Malley’ formally ‘Isambard’, built by John Raymond Barker.
THAMES BARBARIANS Thames Barbarians joined the CPGA in 2021. Based at Gravesend on the River Thames drawing their membership from London and the South East. They own their gig ‘Magwitch’ formally ‘Cream of Cornwall’ built by Brian Nobbs.

A Dutch affair: meet team Zwarte Draecken AKA the Black Dragons
O Situated at the entrance to St. Mary's Harbour Quay, The Mermaid Inn is the Isles of Scilly's most iconic public house. Traditionally the haunt of smugglers, pirates and fishermen, the pub is still firmly connected to its maritime past. Now the destination of choice for locals and visitors alike, the traditional main bar is the social hub of St. Mary's. You can also experience the Slip Inn Bar & Bistro or the Mermaid Restaurant, both of which overlook the Old Quay and St. Mary's Harbour and have stunning views of Samson, Bryher and Tresco. ur team started rowing in 2006 when our local water sports association WsV De Spiegel bought a polyester gig for the club. The team consists of a nice mix of entrepreneurs from farming, gardening, metalworking, logistics and IT. The first year we broke down more material (pins, footboards, and a single oar) but in the end we got the hang of the technique. It is also nice to see that the technique of pilot gig rowing has evolved over time. In order to participate in the World Championships on Scilly, the Irene Too was purchased in 2010 and Vilt later on. This year will be our fifth time we participate in this great event. We row in Vilt in both the Super Vet competition and the overall competition, a total of 7 races and twice a chance to get on the podium. And then on Sunday evening perhaps participate in the informal arm pressing competition on the roof terrace of the Atlantic, we also have good memories of that. In between we also like to drink a beer with the various rowing teams from Cornwall that we have come to know over the years. For the winner of the men's final, we always take a bottle of “Muiden Schipperbitter” with us, which has become a tradition. Rowing in the Cornish Pilot Gig has grown considerably in the Netherlands over the past 10 years. The total number of clubs has increased to 11, including Scheveningen, Muiden, Loosdrecht, Nederhorst den Berg, de Kaag and Amsterdam.
The fleet now consists of 30 Pilot Gigs. We also have a Dutch competition, which is organized by the Dutch Pilot Gig Association. One of the most important races of the season in The Netherlands is Muiden – Pampus – Muiden, a weekend of racing around the island of Pampus near Amsterdam. A competition in which, true to tradition, various teams from Cornwall also participate. Team Zwarte Draecken wishes everyone a fun weekend with good results. We thank the WPGC for the invitation and all the preparation of WPGC 2022. In addition, special thanks to Joanne from Westford House and Anne from Pelistry Cottage for their hospitality and our sponsors Van Schie, Puik Tuincentrum, Krijnen Pomptechniek, Zijtveld Grijpers, CRV, Greenlink, Zx Machines and Systemation.

he idea that the Campernell was simply a ‘cargo barge’ is untrue. Currently one of only seven 19th century gigs on Scilly today, she is a fascinating insight into the history of Scilly, and her connection with St. Agnes. During the heyday of Scillonian shipping there were one hundred gigs working in, around and out of Scilly, from carrying goods to the salvage of shipwrecks. Unlike her slimmer counterparts, the Campernell, built circa 1890, was to be the ‘work horse’ of the fleet: larger – some 30’ in length by 6’ beam - and heavier to ensure sailing ability and seaworthiness. The last known survivor of her kind, and the ability to accommodate a seventh rower – possibly to improve speed over long distances and provide useful space for cargo, but also removed for carrying coffins - makes her truly unique. These gigs were often referred to as the ‘chain carrier’, chain being one of the most valuable items to salvage from any shipwreck. The Campernell was built by the well-known Peters of Mawes, a family of boat builders for some 200 years and the same birthplace of many including the slimmer Shah. Built for the pilots of St Ives, it was then bought by the people of St. Agnes sometime before the turn of the century.

Her use as a pilot boat came to an end in the 1930s and in the same year was thought to be one of the first to race in the Pilot Gigs as a sport. Today, the Campernell is still owned by a group of local shareholders, but there is a sense the she belongs to the islands, and all that enjoy her.

We are very proud to be having this gig locally by Andrew Hicks, his first solo boat. This continues the traditions of builders Tom Chudleigh and Peter Martin. We are delighted to name our new gig ‘Zelda’, harking back to the original boat built in 1874 by Peters of St Mawes. Originally a Tresco gig, the money was raised for Zelda from the wrecked steamship of the same name. In the 1950’s, the Zelda was sold to Padstow Regatta Committee but was badly damaged by a lorry reversing into her on the quay. You can now see the original 19th Century Zelda in the walls of the Pilot Gig Restaurant.

t Mary’s Gig Club have had a new Cornish Pilot Gig built on the Isles of Scilly by local boat builder Andrew Hicks. The significance of this gig is that it signals the continuation of gig building on the Isles of Scilly, something that has been happening for centuries. Gigs once formed a key part of island life as working boats earning a living for many local families. Three of our gigs that race weekly in the summer months originate from the 19th Century when they worked the local waters and are some of the oldest gigs that survive today.
