Sarah is also a high profile campaigner for buildings at risk and has personally renovated Rise Hall, a 32-bedroomed Grade 2* listed hall in East Riding of Yorkshire. fter a good few years spent talking about visiting the Isles of Scilly, I finally made it last Easter time. I brought my entire family and we travelled with friends too – so four adults and six youngsters and teenagers in total. It was worth the wait. In many ways, this archipelago belies the 21st Century as well as the rest of England… a heady mix of Famous Five adventure, a touch of wilderness, incredible natural beauty and a sprinkle of old school principles and you have the Isles of Scilly summed up. That, and the immense sense of community here, and of islanders pulling together. Mother Nature is still well and truly in charge and the matriarch appears to have no intention of releasing her grip on this luscious land. The islands boast eye-wateringly beautiful and extraordinary plants in abundance - with sheer cliffs and tiny inlets - plus incredible beaches and rich wildlife to match. Come rain or shine, and we had both in spades, Scilly holds a beautiful technicolor glow. We swam with seals, cycled on empty lanes, ate island-made ice cream and apple strudel, played chase on the sand. Real things matter here, and it’s delightful that so little of western life nonsense has made it to these shores. And I, for one, appreciated my slower beating pulse as the magical Isles of Scilly took a hold on my heart. I felt more in touch on Scilly with who I should be, and what I should be, than I have in years – it was good for the soul as well as being great fun. 1

arrives early on Scilly. From late February, warmer sunshine and birdsong return as the evenings begin to draw out. By March, the coconut scent of gorse fills the air, as do the arrival of Fulmars, Sandwich Terns, Willow Warblers, Sand Martins and Swallows. Visitors arrive for mini wellness retreats and the early mornings see sunrise yoga sessions, farmers out sowing their summer crops and fishermen once more taking to the sea. By April, the islands are in full swing. Walk Scilly and the Easter holidays get everyone out into the spring sunshine (and odd shower) to explore the coves, the lighthouses and the coastal paths - by bike, on foot or by boat. Time to rejuvenate and fill your lungs with sea fresh air. 5

ST. MARY’S An island of great walks, a fantastic history, Scillonian culture and heritage – and the largest in the archipelago. For many visitors to Scilly, St. Mary’s is the first glimpse of island life. It’s the largest island in the cluster, but still very small; the entire circumference is little more than 9 miles. Rush hour here is when people flock to the quay to catch the inter-island boats or wander through its (tiny) capital, Hugh Town, with its charming cluster of cafés, shops, galleries and a museum, bordered on both sides by shell-scattered beaches. Hugh Town, a mere hamlet by mainland standards, is also just a pebble’s throw from spectacular coastal walks and places rich in heritage and history to explore at an easy pace. This is a place where children can roam free, artists abound and nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts can truly appreciate the island’s outstanding natural beauty. Head to the top of Telegraph Hill, pause for breath at Peninnis Lighthouse, seek out the secret paths through the tranquil Carreg Dhu garden or discover the Bronze Age burial chamber at Bant’s Carn and the ancient settlement at Halangy Down. Gaze at the unusual ‘loaded camel’ rock on Porth Hellick. Feel the sand between your toes on Pelistry Bay, and clamber over to Toll’s Island at low tide for a real Swallows & Amazons adventure. Or tread the boards and explore the hides along the Lower and Higher Moors nature trails.

THE SPIRIT OF ST. MARY’S A WRECK REMEMBERED
MAY DAY WELCOME
The original Schiller Shelter on Porthcressa was built and named after the German oceangoing liner SS Schiller that was wrecked off Scilly in 1875 with the loss of 335 lives. Islanders rescued 37 survivors and the German Government wanted to offer their gratitude to the islands.
For generations, primary children have celebrated the arrival of spring with a special May Day celebration – including maypole dances and the crowning of the May Queen. Islanders and visitors flock to the park in Hugh Town to watch this fairy tale tradition.
On summer evenings, watch local rowers race for glory in historic pilot gigs, some dating back to the 19th Century when they were used to navigate ocean-going ships into St. Mary’s harbour.
FINDING HARRY’S WALLS Located at the far end of Porthmellon Beach, Harry’s Walls are the remains of an unfinished artillery fort, started in 1551 by Edward VI’s government. The Garrison was soon chosen as the site of the island’s main fortress, leaving the walls unfinished.

THE SCENT OF SCILLY All around St. Mary’s you’ll find tiny sheltered fields of flowers or bulbs grown on a number of farms. Scented narcissi are exported far and wide across the UK from October to March.
SMALLEST FOOTBALL LEAGUE Scilly is home to the world’s smallest football league, comprising just two teams. The Woolpack Wanderers and Garrison Gunners play each other in league and cup matches every Sunday between October and May.

Tresco is Scilly’s second largest island and best known for its amazing sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden, a botanical paradise planted amidst the ruins of a Benedictine priory. SEA PLANE PATROLS
One of Britain’s greatest story tellers, Sam Llewellyn was born on Tresco. Many of his books and poems have been set or influenced by his early life here, including Hell Bay. He also wrote the biography “Emperor Smith: The man who built Scilly”.
The Flying Boat at New Grimsby was once the site of RNAS Tresco. Sea planes would patrol the archipelago’s western approaches towards the end of the Great War, providing an escort for convoys and spotting U-boats.
HIDE AWAY Tresco has three bird hides which provide excellent spots to watch dunlins, plovers and ducks. Visit in spring and autumn to see migratory birds including razorbills, guillemots and cormorants.
LOW TIDE POP-UP EXPERIENCE Head for the sand bar in the channel between Tresco and Bryher during ultra-low spring tides for two hours of live music, gin and Prosecco bars, paella served off the back of a beached boat and island salt-beef baps! BEYOND PIPER’S HOLE Piper’s Hole is a deep cavern reached only by scrambling down a cliff at the foot of Tregarthen’s Hill (to the north of Tresco). Once a famous smugglers’ haunt, the small entrance widens to reveal a fresh water pool and a small gravel beach.

THE SPIRIT OF ST. MARTIN’S TALE OF CHAPEL STONE Chapel Stone, known locally as “Billy Idol”, is located by an entrance grave on Chapel Down. This ancient stone was initially discovered in the 1940s being used in a field wall. Lost again, it was rediscovered just 30 years ago, following a bracken fire on the island.

SHIPWRECK REEF St. Martin’s only pub, The Seven Stones Inn is named after the Seven Stones reef, about seven miles from Scilly. It’s been responsible for some 200 shipwrecks, the most famous being the oil tanker, Torrey Canyon in March 1967.

WHITE ISLAND ISTHMUS
Although the blocked-up entrance to the Daymark notes the date 1637, this remarkable navigation aid was actually built in 1683. Initially painted white until 1822, by 1833 it was red. Finally, the colour scheme was settled: bands of red and white.
Uninhabited White Island lies off the northwest coast of St. Martin’s, to which is it joined by a tidal causeway. Scramble across at low tide to see a number of Bronze Age entrance caves and several cairns.

Many of his books are set here, including “Why the Whales Came” which was immortalised in a film shot on the island. In 2019, he wrote a special “Walking Story” for Bryher, called “Half a Man”.
GREAT POOL Between Hell Bay Hotel and Gweal Hill you’ll spot Great Pool, formed by people digging for peat. A leat was cut into it to ensure a regular influx of fresh seawater and to prevent it from turning into a stagnant swamp.

SCHOOL’S OUT
Old world charm is abundant on Scilly, nowhere more so on Bryher with its old red public telephone box. Only now, it’s a pop-up mini museum! Purchased by Bryher’s Community Association in 2017 for £1, each year the telephone box houses a different Bryher-themed exhibition.
There hasn’t been a school on Bryher since 1971 – the site is now the island’s Community Centre. Instead, Bryher’s younger school children travel by boat every weekday to and from the primary school base on Tresco.
TIMMY’S LOOKOUT Timmy’s Hill was once an excellent vantage point for approaching ships that required local assistance in navigating the dangerous waters. Look out for the remains of the unroofed shelter and curving wall of boulders at Scilly’s oldest (purpose-built) pilot lookout.
SEVEN HILLS Bryher derives its name from the Cornish word Breyer, meaning “place of hills”. This is no mountain range, however… although Bryher boasts seven hills, none is higher than 42 metres. Great Pool

ST. AGNES A wild little isle, strewn with Bronze Age burial sites and barren heathland. Step onto St. Agnes where beauty and isolation are behind the independent spirit of this wild, windswept island. Every turn brings a different perspective – you’ll find stunning coves and contemporary cuisine juxtaposed with ancient field systems remains, a stone snow man and recycled sculptures! St. Agnes is the only inhabited isle to be separated from the rest of Scilly’s islands by a deep-water channel. And it is connected to the diminutive island of Gugh by a sand bar that is accessible only at low tide. Amble barefoot across ‘The Bar’ before the tide floods in and for a few hours you’ll be castaway on Gugh with only wildlife, Obadiah’s Barrow and the nine-foot-tall ‘Old Man’ standing stone for company. Beyond the shores of St. Agnes lies nothing but shipwrecks, seabird colonies, rugged islets and a 3,000 mile expanse of Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, St. Agnes was the scene of one of the worst shipping disasters ever – when four Royal Navy warships including HMS Association were shipwrecked after striking the Western Rocks on 22nd October 1707. Many of the 1,550 men lost at sea that howling night are said to be buried on the cricket field at St. Agnes Green. A magnet for wildlife, St. Agnes is also the location where Storm Petrels and Manx Shearwater chicks have started to breed again for the first time on Scilly in living memory, thanks to the highly successful Seabird Recovery Project Inspired by the magical landscapes and sea, St. Agnes is also home to galleries, musicians and artists.

MR & MRS HICKS
St. Warna, the patron saint of shipwrecks, arrived on Scilly from Ireland, living by St. Warna’s Well. Locals threw pins into the well, making a wish to either steer ships away from treacherous rocks or onto them so that the booty could be plundered.
Of the islands’ 85 residents, eight are “Mrs Hicks” – quite a challenge for the local post office, also run by a Mrs Hicks! Dating back some 500 years, the name is prominent on St. Mary’s too. However, the families are said to be unrelated.

ICONIC LIGHTHOUSE
Of all the beaches on St. Agnes, Periglis is a shell collector’s dream. Beachcomb the coarse sandy crescent boasts and soak up the breath-taking views to Annet, the Western Rocks and Bishop Rock Lighthouse.
The unmistakable tower of the now decommissioned lighthouse on St. Agnes stands tall and proud. Built in 1680, it is now a private home, but for nearly 230 years, it kept watch over the Western Isles' approaches.

BRAVE MEN OF THE SEA
This Neolithic Age grave on Gugh is named after a local farmer, Obadiah Hicks; its entrance aligned to where the mid-winter solstice rises. A 1901 excavation unearthed parts of a male skeleton, cremated ashes and twelve inverted urns.
Step inside the tiny church on St. Agnes and come face to face with a remarkable stainedglass window. Created by local artist, Oriel Hicks, it honours all the brave Scillonians who selflessly put out to sea to help others in danger.

The Isles of Scilly are famous for their birdlife. Author and leading resident ornithologist, Will Wagstaff, tells us what you can expect to see and when best to come.
N
early 450 different species of bird have been known to have graced these islands, including many great rarities. Indeed, the Isles of Scilly are probably the best place in the country to look for that unexpected vagrant. So whether you’re interested in watching some of our more common species going about their business or seeking out the next rare migrant, there are always some fantastic birds to look at throughout the year on Scilly. Breeding species such as Song Thrush and House Sparrow that are less common on the mainland are abundant here on Scilly. And quite bold too!
Out to sea and around the islands, Puffins along with Razorbills and Guillemots are present from late March to late July with nationally important numbers of Manx Shearwaters and Storm Petrels also breeding here. As the majority of birds seen on the islands are migrants, they can turn up almost anywhere irrespective of habitat. Some will only stop on Scilly for a few hours, others for weeks as they feed up ready to move on. Spring migration begins in March and continues through until early June with Swallows, Wheatears and various Warblers all making a welcome appearance, along with the occasional scarce species such as Hoopoe and Woodchat Shrike. These spring migrants, although fewer in number, tend to be in their breeding plumage and, hopefully, in song. Conversely in autumn, we hear very little birdsong. However, greater numbers of birds are seen in the autumn due to the presence of the immatures along with the returning adults. Some early return migrants will head south in late July but the main movement of migrants starts in mid-August, carrying on until early November. October is our most popular month for looking for rare birds - it’s the time we expect most to blow our way - but they can turn up in any month. If the wind is from the west from mid-August, there’s always the chance of an American vagrant such as Pectoral or Buff-breasted Sandpipers or an extreme vagrant such as a Red-eyed Vireo. An easterly wind will bring greater numbers of birds from the continent including scarce species such as Wryneck, Red-backed Shrike or Lapland Bunting and the occasional ‘mega’ such as a White’s Thrush.

he Atlantic grey seal (‘the hook-nosed sea pig’) is Britain’s largest land breeding mammal and was first protected by Parliament in 1914. Males can grow to 350kgs in weight, females to 250kgs. They can live for 35 years. The population of grey seals on Scilly is part of a wider mobile Celtic Sea population ranging as far as Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. Numbers vary seasonally on Scilly, from a low of around 260 animals in high summer, peaking at 750 in the winter months when young animals come into the archipelago looking for love and sheltering from storms. If you fly into the islands over the Eastern Isles and gaze down at East Porth beach on Great Ganilly, some will always be lounging there. Or better still, go out on a seal-watching boat trip to the seal strongholds of the Western Rocks or the Eastern Isles. If you’re looking for an intimate encounter with raw nature on the wild Atlantic edge, then you can swim or snorkel with seals off St. Martin’s. They’re inquisitive creatures, who are just as likely to check you out as you are them. Around 80 gorgeous white-coated pups are born in Scilly each year during the autumn. Holiday makers can contribute by counting the seals, as citizen scientists, and reporting figures back to the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust. So not only can you join in the fun of seeing these adorable creatures, you’ll be helping the animals at the same time. The wonderful grey seals of Scilly, naturally curious and engaging, speak to us all about our international responsibilities to protect and cherish marine environments for future generations.

A very clear, still and moonless night had drawn me to Par Beach. I walked half its length then set the tripod down and pointed the camera towards Ragged Island, where the Milky Way touched down and the stars were at their thickest. I fired off a large number of 20 second exposures, happy to gaze around the universe as I counted each one down. On flicking through them afterwards, I found this one had caught a shooting star above Great Ganilly. The bright star right of centre and reflecting in the waters off Par Beach is Sirius.

STARGAZING ON SCILLY Our tiny archipelago is blessed with truly dark and unpolluted skies, making it the perfect destination for stargazing. Charlie Payne from the Community Observatory on St. Martin’s tells us what we can look out for on Scilly.
W
hether you’re a beginner or aficionado, when it comes to astronomy, gazing at the stars, planets, galaxies and other objects in the night sky is a truly amazing sight – and nowhere more so than on Scilly. With no light pollution, the Isles of Scilly enjoy pristine night skies. On a clear night, the sheer number of stars is breath-taking; for many visitors, seeing the Milky Way arc across the sky is an unforgettable experience. Crucially, as islands, being surrounded by large stretches of water, stargazers on Scilly benefit from fantastic sightlines. Our long, low horizons mean you have the chance to see objects – particularly the planets – that you would miss in a built up area with tall trees or buildings. With the shorter days, autumn, winter and early spring offer the promise of an earlier glimpse of the heavens. For many, September marks the start of the annual stargazing season. October half term is an excellent opportunity for stargazing with lots to see and skies darkening by 8pm. Ideally, you need the sky to be truly dark and your eyes adjusted so the best time for stargazing is an hour and a half after sunset. Night watch THE COMMUNITY OBSERVATORY ON ST. MARTIN’S The Community Observatory on St. Martin’s opened in April 2019, the result of more than three years of fundraising by a group of local amateur astronomers. This island observatory is one of the most remote and certainly the furthest south west in the UK. The Observatory has two observation domes, one housing a 14-inch Meade telescope suitable for deep sky viewing; the other, a versatile 5-inch Altair telescope ideal for viewing the planets, sits alongside a solar telescope which is used for observing the Sun during the day. The observatory has a well-equipped warm room that includes computer equipment for astro-imaging.

A GUIDE TO SCILLY'S NIGHT SKY BEST SPOTS TO STARGAZE We’re spoilt for choice across all the islands, but here’s our top 3 picks:
use one with a red light setting. And unless the Moon is your target for viewing, you also might want to avoid the days around a full Moon, as its brightness can drown out all but the most prominent stars and planets. There’s so much up in the night sky that it can be daunting to know where to start looking. Use a star map to orientate yourself with the night sky and start by finding one Constellation you will remember, such as the plough. There are several brilliant mobile apps available too (Star Walk 2 or Sky Map) which use your location to tell you exactly what’s in the sky at any given moment. (Use on red light mode!) The excellent and free programme, Stellarium, for computer is a must for budding astronomers. You only need your naked eyes to stargaze, but adding a bit of magnification can really enhance your experience. A pair of binoculars is great for looking at the Moon or at stars within Constellations. Especially for younger stargazers, the chance to look at a planet such as Saturn or Jupiter through a powerful telescope adds a real ‘wow’ factor. And once you start, just keep going! aroline Brookes is 69. She first came to Scilly as a 12-year old with her parents back in 1962. This year, she’s here with three children, the in-laws and four grandchildren. “The memories of holidays past keep drawing us back; there’s something indescribably special about Scilly. The children can have their independence and we can all go off and do our own thing, then come back together to Men a Vaur house on St. Mary’s later in the day,” she says. “There’s always something which takes us back to the simple pleasures in life. The islanders are so friendly, it’s a place just made for families. “We all find something special in each of the islands we visit… the children love St. Mary’s for the family cricket matches, and building creations on the beach out of stones and sand, and creating a pop up ‘shop’ with seaweed and shells. I find new things every time I visit Scilly and my daughter, Roseanne adores visiting Tresco each year. The grandchildren meanwhile love a spot of quay jumping on St. Martin’s, catching crabs, shrimp and sand eels, and finding starfish.” 47

ill and Keith Ellen first came to Scilly in 1987. Since then, they've opted to camp on Bryher with their family every year. “We were on holiday in Cornwall looking across Penzance harbour over breakfast one morning, and saw the Scillonian and decided to hop aboard for a bit of an adventure! “We love the fact that the islands haven’t changed in all those years, and that as soon as you’re here, you switch off. We hire a boat every year and take ourselves off to empty beaches. The smell of the sea, the weather, the walks, the darkest of skies… “Our children are musicians and as teenagers would tour the islands playing gigs. They’d be roped into football and cricket matches with the islanders, too. The freedom for children to do their own thing… it’s incredible. Now the grandchildren are getting a taste – playing on the beaches, searching for treasures, catching crabs. And it’s lovely that old fashioned values continue, like the honesty boxes and creating art from your environment, and the fact that everyone says hello. Scilly’s Hidden History Island archaeologist, Dr Katharine Sawyer, unveils Scilly’s fascinating pre-historic past, dating back some 8,000 years.

cilly was first inhabited by hunter gatherers a few thousand years ago – 6,000BC to be a little more precise. Back then it was a seasonal affair, with Mesolithic occupants enjoying the warmer climate during the summer months as well as a lack of predators. Indeed, spared from wolves and bears that were prevalent on the mainland and across northern Europe, they introduced deer and wild pigs to Scilly and released them on the land. These bred on the islands, thus providing - alongside bountiful fish and seals - a living larder on which to feast. Fast forward to 2,000BC and we find evidence across the islands that Scilly was supporting a permanent population at this time. This was the Bronze Age, a time when Scilly sprang to life with an explosion of burial chambers and other monuments. Why? Because like a lot of the islands around what is now the UK, it was seen as a safe haven where children and livestock could roam safely. Neolithic inhabitants moved freely between Cornwall and

Scilly but increasingly settled into villages on Scilly’s larger land mass… back then, of course, the islands - with the exception of St. Agnes and Gugh - were one, albeit intertidal, island with an estimated population of between 200 and 300 people. The best examples of Bronze Age occupation can be found on St. Mary’s – the burial chambers at Porth Hellick, Bant’s Carn and EARLY FARMING

Early forms of farming on Scilly in the Iron Age include early types of peas, beans and cereals, as well as domesticated cattle, sheep and pigs. These food sources supplemented wild foraged foods and fish. Even Great Auk bones have been discovered at Halangy Village. Dogs were domesticated later.
MONUMENTS APLENTY
ISLES OF THE DEAD?
There are 238 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, as designated by Historic England. This is the greatest concentration of monuments anywhere in the UK, containing over 900 individual examples - from prehistoric ritual and burial monuments, field systems and houses to cist grave cemeteries and Romano-British settlements and shrines.
For her PhD, Katharine studied Scilly’s Bronze Age Burial Chambers and wrote a book entitled The Isles of the Dead?. This investigates why there are so many burial sites on Scilly and if bodies were brought to Scilly from elsewhere specifically to be cremated on the islands.
Innisidgen – although there are a number of splendid examples on Samson and Gugh. On Nornour, there is evidence of stone huts with hearths and sleeping platforms. Elsewhere, there are Bronze Age field boundaries, both on dry land and in the inter-tidal zone. There is no evidence for Roman occupation of Scilly, but the Romano British period (from 43AD to around 400AD) is still one of considerable importance for the islands. It is thought that traders travelling between France and continental Europe to the UK mainland would come and seek shelter in the channel between Nornour and St. Martin’s. Much of the archipelago was still one land mass at the time, and this location would have offered the first safe anchorage. Evidence suggests that the settlement on Nornour had been abandoned previously but the Romans left offerings such as brooches at a shrine there. Whatever the explanation, Nornour represents the most iconic archaeological site of anywhere on Scilly. 55

The Bryher Sword, described as one of the most important ancient finds in the British Isles, was discovered at Hillside Farm in 1999 by chance by the local farmer Paul Jenkins. The stone-lined burial chamber on the island of Bryher also contained a bronze mirror. When found, the sword was still in its bronze scabbard, decorated with tiny iron rings that were still clearly visible.

On St. Agnes you can find the fragmented remains of a prehistoric field system and boundaries at Castella Downs. They are just visible on the downland north and south of Troytown Maze.

Chapel Down on St. Martin’s is rich in archaeological remains… just below the Daymark you can just about make out the foundations of a small 8th – 10th Century chapel. Further down the hill, set into the bedrock and standing just 0.6 metres high, is a small carved piece of granite in the shape of a human head and shoulders. This is “Billy Idol”.

Giant’s Castle on the south eastern coast of St. Mary’s is a classic example of an Iron Age Promontory Fort found on Scilly, dating back to the Iron Age, around 300BC. It’s a contemporary of Halangy Village, and also a Promontory Fort found at Shipman Head Down on Bryher.

The Old Man of Gugh is a leaning menhir standing 2.4 metres high, and Obadiah’s Barrow, also on Gugh, is an impressive entrance grave which was excavated in 1901. You’ll find both, and a kelp pit too around Kittern Hill, itself displaying the remains of round houses, field system and cairns.

Bant’s Carn is probably the most famous of the Scillonian entrance graves. It was excavated in 1900 by George Bonsor who found four piles of cremated bones at the far end of the chamber and fragments of pottery in the passage outside the entrance.

Although Halangy Village on the northern shores of St. Mary’s dates back to the late Iron Age/ early Romano-British Period (300BC to 300AD) there is, in the cliff-face of the bay below, evidence of circular stone huts that suggests the lower-lying village was occupied considerably earlier.

Nornour hosts the richest evidence of pre-historic life on the islands, in particular the remains of 11 excavated circular stone buildings. Nornour was occupied from about 2000BC to 50AD and was probably home to one extended family.

bronze pins has been unearthed on St. Mary’s, but not the pins cast. It suggests that metal working took place on the islands but that copper and tin would have been brought from Cornwall, since none has been discovered locally on the islands.

I began as a wild boy chasing down basking sharks, with neither time nor head room to dream. A king of the island, rifle-toting, snare-setting, drift-netting wild boy in a tiny pearl of a kingdom. I was always watching, looking out and looking in. I watched for ships through the brass monocular Mother said I wasn’t to take outside on account of it being a precious thing and with the other eye tried to uncover the workings of the island. I lay in the long grass where beetles spat bitter juice, shot rabbits and birds with the rifle Uncle gave me when I turned seven, crawled beneath the sill stones of buried entrance graves. During long afternoons, I sat with my back against the fallen two-faced Celtic idol in the gorse, let the white sky enter through my eyes and wondered what it would be like to have been here for hundreds of years, thousands. I had black eyes back then and I ate limpets raw from the rocks. That’s what I remember most about childhood, the cold, briny taste of it down the rails of my tongue. That and the day Stephen and I spotted nine basking sharks in the channel between the shore and Teän. Determined to catch one we were too. hut down your gadgets, grab your bag and ready yourself for a stunning journey west! Arrive on Scilly, check into your hotel or B&B and head to Jack’s Bar for a cosy cocktail before supper on the beach. Spend your first day exploring St. Mary’s; best done by bike, we think. Head up to the amazingly well preserved Bronze Age villages, drop into Holy Vale vineyard, then “park up” at Pelistry Beach for a stroll across to Toll Island. Return via Old Town Bay, or stop off at Juliet’s Garden and soak in the incredible views with an early sundowner. In the evening, why not hop on the “supper boat” to St. Agnes or St. Martin’s? Eating out takes on a new meaning on Scilly! Hire your own kayak or power boat (with private skipper if you prefer) and set off in search of tiny coves and white sand beaches. Or how about some cool coasteering, amazing sea-swimming or hanging out with seals in the Eastern Isles? s I flew in over the tiny dots in the shimmering silver sea, for my first visit to the Isles of Scilly, it was very evident how precious and unprotected these little islands looked. I’d heard about all the lovely local produce grown and nurtured on the islands… this microcosm of sustainable living and lifestyle – it spoke my language, and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! My first experience took me to the Low Tide event, on a sand bar between Tresco and Bryher. There was live music, pop-up bars with Processo and Hell Bay Gin, mussels and Tresco beef baps, but I headed for a green boat called Emerald Dawn, beached on the sand and lurched to one side – the aroma of lobster dogs and gently simmering seafood paella on its stern too much to ignore! There I met mother and daughter – Sue and Amanda Pender – doing brisk business, and no wonder. The lobster, crab and wet fish had been caught just hours before by Amanda’s brother Mark and son Shamus, with the additional fresh ingredients supplied by Bryher’s island farm. Food miles are virtually non-existent on Scilly; indeed the blackboard on the wall of Dibble & Grub on St. Mary’s displays a map of the islands depicting all the local produce used to create their delicious tapas dishes. Not only will you dine like a duchess, but Euan and Lindsay are a wonderful couple, happy to impart local folklore and Scillonian tales long into the night - an authentic island experience bar none. My final day on Scilly took me to St. Agnes – I needed to see where this delicious Westward Farm gin originated. Greeted by Grace and Aiden Hicks, and their gorgeous free-spirited children, we walked amongst the orchards of apples (for their cider), and pittosporum hedgerows that protected the tiny fields from the coastal breezes; we fed the chickens and picked island grown rose geraniums, gorse and elderberries – just some of the incredible botanicals that go into the production of this micro gin distillery. This family has a story, a lifestyle and a business that I would happily lift up and take back to Leytonstone!
High Tide on St. Agnes, with celebrated chef Mark Eberlein, serves up exquisite seafood in a relaxed setting with sensational Atlantic views. While away an afternoon at Tresco’s Ruin Beach, the best wood-fired pizzas, with views to match, or head to the Flying Boat for all day delicious dining. Treat yourself to dinner at Hell Bay Hotel’s Restaurant on Bryher - fine dining at its very best. The Crab Shack, a rustic little eatery on Bryher serving shellfish, served in Portuguese cataplanas straight from the boat. ROUND ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE Sited on the most northerly isle of Scilly, Round Island Lighthouse was built by William Tregarthen Douglass. Completed in 1887, it was one of three lighthouses on the archipelago at the time, the others being on Bishop Rock and St. Agnes. Standing 19 metres high, the lighthouse was modernised in 1966 and automated in 1987. The only access, aside from a helicopter, is by a flight of steps cut into the solid rock. SCILLY’S GATEWAYS Your journey west, travel connections and parking. There are four gateways to Scilly, all in Devon and Cornwall: Exeter, Newquay, Penzance and Land’s End. Both Exeter and Cornwall Newquay airports offer a range of connections to several other UK and European airports, including London, Manchester, Belfast, Glasgow and Newcastle. Penzance (and Land’s End via regular shuttle) are well served by trains operated by GWR from London Paddington, Reading, Bristol, and Exeter whilst coach services, operated by National Express, also serve Exeter, Penzance and Newquay. For those driving, there’s plenty of secure parking at all of Scilly’s gateways including park ‘n’ ride options at Penzance. Remember, taking your car to Scilly is not an option.

TAKE THE SCILLONIAN FERRY
Skybus flights operate from Exeter, Newquay and Land’s End Airports and offer a memorable start to your Scilly holiday, with breathtaking aerial views of this unique cluster of islands. Dog-friendly flights from Land’s End take just 15 minutes to reach St. Mary’s, and operate year-round. Skybus also flies dog-friendly flights from Cornwall Airport Newquay all year round, which take 30 minutes. Skybus flights from Exeter Airport operate six days a week between March and October, reaching Scilly in just under an hour. Secure car parking is available at all three airports. A dedicated shuttle bus also runs between Penzance train station and Land’s End Airport.
Travelling on Scillonian passenger ferry offers a unique view of the West Cornwall coast and opportunities to see fantastic wildlife on route as it sails between Penzance and St. Mary’s six days a week (seven in the summer weeks). Scillonian operates between March and November with a sailing time of 2hrs and 45 minutes. Tides allowing, the ferry usually leaves Penzance Harbour every morning at 9.15am, arriving into St. Mary’s at 12 noon. It leaves again at 4.30pm arriving back into Penzance at 7.15pm. Dogs are very welcome on board.
New for 2020, climb aboard the state-of-the-art AW139 helicopter with Penzance Helicopters. Easily accessible from the A30, you will take off from Penzance Heliport before enjoying stunning views of the Cornish coast and reaching the islands in just 15 minutes. If you intend to fly your own private aircraft to Scilly, you must make all your own necessary arrangements and comply with aviation regulations. They’ll also be happy to advise on visitor moorings and anchorages.
Every flight on Scilly is met by a dedicated shuttle service that will take you and your bags for a small fee, directly to your accommodation on St. Mary’s or to the quay if you’re staying on an “off island”. Tresco Island and some hotels offer complimentary transfers. Private taxi transfers are also available, if preferred, but these should be booked in advance.

When travelling by the Scillonian III passenger ferry, clearly label your luggage with your name and holiday address. Then you won’t need to wait on the quay for it to be unloaded when you arrive into St. Mary’s. The local haulier will collect your bags for you and deliver them directly to your accommodation for a small fee (£1.50 per item in 2019).

GETTING BETWEEN THE ISLANDS The insider’s guide to island-hopping on Scilly. Island hopping on Scilly is what one does! It doesn’t matter where you stay because all the islands are close together and journeys are short, so it’s easy to base yourself on one and visit a different island every day. From St. Mary’s, boats to the other islands are run by St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association (SMBA). Look out for their trips online @scillyboating and on the various blackboards around the island, including day trips to the “off-islands”, landings on uninhabited islands, special trips to see Bishop Rock Lighthouse
ACCESSIBLE SCILLY Most people get around the islands on foot, but if that's not an option for you or one of your party, we recommend that you look at, and book, alternative options in advance of your holiday. You can hire pushbikes (with trailers), electric bikes and golf buggies (for those aged 25-75 years; driving licences required) on St. Mary’s and Tresco. There are also a number of private hire vehicles on St. Mary’s, a Community Bus and a “Buzza Bus” on St. Mary’s (for those registered to use it via Cornwall's Age Concern).

Buy tickets on board, at the dedicated kiosk on St. Mary’s Quay or at the Tourist Information Centre. Private operators offer daily specialist excursions too. The SMBA also operates the boat services from and to St. Martin’s. Boats operate via St. Mary’s, with some direct services to the other islands. Tresco Boat Services serve Tresco and Bryher, whilst St. Agnes Boating operates from St. Agnes. You can check their schedules and island excursions online at @stagnesboating and @trescoboatservices or on noticeboards close to the quays and around the islands. Additionally, if you want a boat at a special time or to a special place, this can nearly always be arranged (tides and weather permitting!) via the boat services or various private operators.
The off-islands – Tresco, St. Martin’s, St. Agnes and Bryher – have only a mixture of concrete roads and unmade roads that are not suitable for public transport. They are only accessible by boat and getting on and off can be tricky with several steps. (The boatmen are lovely though, and will always assist where necessary). Pushchairs and lighter standard wheelchairs can be lifted onto boats – electric wheelchairs would be a challenge. Remember when booking your flights or the passenger ferry to Scilly, as well as your accommodation, to discuss your particular requirements. Check their access statements for more detailed information too.
