Director of Athletics

John Sirianni Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm men’s basketball team at Cowles Fieldhouse. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson Community. The landscape of the campus is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. Highlighting the changes around campus are the opening of the brand-new, 55,000-square-foot Kent Campus Center and the remodel of Phieffer Dinning Hall. Also, the newly renovated Blank Performing Arts Center begins its second year in 2012. Change is underway on the athletic front as well. The basketball and volleyball teams will enjoy a brand new gym floor inside Cowles Fieldhouse and the football, soccer and track and field teams enter their second year of competition on the competition surfaces installed in Buxton Stadium last year. But the most exciting change is yet to come the proposed renovation of the Cowles and Carse facilities. I invite you to learn more about this project on page 14. While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships. Thank you for joining us today and we hope to see you again soon. Go Storm! John Sirianni, Director of Athletics

Head Coach

Charles Zanders In two years on the sidelines, Charles Zanders has brought enthusiasm and optimism back to the Simpson men’s basketball program. After back-to-back trips to the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament, Zanders hopes to take the Storm one step further in 2012-13. The 22nd head coach in Simpson history, Zanders took over the position April 9, 2010 after serving as an assistant during the 2009-10 season. Zanders is 24-29 in his two seasons at the helm, leading the Storm to a 12-14 record and a sixth-place finish in the Iowa Conference a year ago. Advancing to the league tournament with the sixth seed, Zanders and the Storm upset third-seeded Dubuque on the road in double overtime to advance to the semifinals for a second straight year. In 2010-11, the Des Moines native led the Storm to a 12-15 record, a six-game turnaround from the year before. Under Zanders, Simpson tallied the most overall and conference wins since 2007 and made its first appearance in the conference tournament since 2007, beating Buena Vista in the first round. The team finished tied for fourth in the league after being picked last in the preseason.

Cowles/Carse Renovation: Phase 1 Simpson College is embarking on a capital project that will create a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex. The college is partnering with the city of Indianola, the Indianola Community School District and the YMCA to build an indoor pool north of town, providing the opportunity to renovate the college’s current pool area into a state-of-the-art fitness, wellness and strength and conditioning facility that includes a wrestling practice center. Through this project, the college will be poised to offer

exceptional resources for students in one central location. To achieve this, the college is seeking $4 million in private support. We invite you to join us in this exciting endeavor that will create new opportunities for students and student-athletes at Simpson, and will ultimately enhance the quality of human life.

FACILITIES Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest. New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide studentathletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s finest playing surfaces. Installed on the field was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the first of its kind to appear in the Midwest. The track is a fullpour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa. Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of different amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fieldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages. Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.
