Director of Athletics

John Sirianni Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm women’s basketball team at Cowles Fieldhouse. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson Community. The landscape of the campus is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. Highlighting the changes around campus are the opening of the brand-new, 55,000-square-foot Kent Campus Center and the remodel of Phieffer Dinning Hall. Also, the newly renovated Blank Performing Arts Center begins its second year in 2012. Change is underway on the athletic front as well. The basketball and volleyball teams will enjoy a brand new gym floor inside Cowles Fieldhouse and the football, soccer and track and field teams enter their second year of competition on the competition surfaces installed in Buxton Stadium last year. But the most exciting change is yet to come the proposed renovation of the Cowles and Carse facilities. I invite you to learn more about this project on page 14 of the men’s section. While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships. Thank you for joining us today and we hope to see you again soon. Go Storm! John Sirianni, Director of Athletics

Head Coach

Brian Niemuth In 25 years on the sidelines, Niemuth has transformed the women’s basketball program at Simpson into one of the most well-respected in the Iowa Conference, the region and the nation. Niemuth’s up-tempo, full-court style of play produces points – and wins – in bunches. The 2012-13 season marks Niemuth’s 26th year at the helm. Since taking over in 1987, the Storm are 478-193 under Niemuth, winning 10 conference titles, six conference tournament championships and making 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. He owns five Iowa Conference Coach of the Year awards and three Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) District Coach of the Year awards, leading his teams to the Sweet 16 in 2007 and 2008. The 2011-12 season was one of milestones for Niemuth, who became the winningest coach in Iowa Conference play when he picked up No. 294 in a win over Wartburg on Jan. 21, passing legendary Luther coach Jane Hildebrand (293 IIAC wins in 27 seasons from 1984-2011). He went on to earn his 300th league win Feb. 15 when Simpson beat Central 81-63, clinching the conference title. At season’s end, Niemuth took home Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time in his illustrious career. The winningest coach in the history of women’s basketball at Simpson, Niemuth won the 400th game of his career at home against Luther on Jan. 7, 2009 (73-43). Following the 2011-12 season, Niemuth ranks 16th among active Division III coaches in wins and is 21st all-time. His .712 career winning percentage ranks 26th among active coaches in all divisions. In addition to performing on the floor, Niemuth’s teams also excel in the classroom. Simpson makes an annual appearance on the WBCA’s Academic Top 25 Honor Roll, ranking first in the Iowa Conference and eighth in the nation with a 3.539 team GPA in 201112. Simpson has led the Iowa Conference and ranked

2

in the top-10 nationally in team GPA for the past five seasons. In a career full conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, it is difficult to decipher one as the best. But in 1999, Niemuth’s Storm achieved a feat unequaled in the history of the conference, going a perfect 20-0 during league play. Simpson has been ranked as high as No. 2 in both the USA Today/WBCA Division III and D3hoops.com polls during Niemuth’s tenure. Prior to his arrival at Simpson, Niemuth served as an assistant basketball coach at Park College in Kansas City, Mo. for two years; one with the men’s team and one with the women’s team. He was an assistant coach at Dallas Center-Grimes (Iowa) High School. Niemuth also served as an assistant baseball coach for Simpson from 1991-1997. The Kansas City, Mo. native was an All-Conference player and team co-captain for two years at Park. He also earned honorable mention All-American honors in baseball for Park after beginning his baseball career at the University of Missouri. Niemuth received his bachelor’s degree from Grand View College in 1988 and earned his master’s degree in sports management at Iowa State University during the summer of 1997. He is a member of the faculty at Simpson and teaches physical education classes. Brian, wife, Beth, and daughter, Brooke, reside in Altoona, Iowa.

FACILITIES Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest. New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide studentathletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s finest playing surfaces. Installed on the field was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the first of its kind to appear in the Midwest. The track is a fullpour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa. Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of different amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fieldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages. Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.
