TABLE OF CONTENTS Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm baseball team at McBride Field. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson community. The campus landscape is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. The Blank Performing Arts Center renovation is complete, giving a shiny new home to the Simpson theater program and the nationallyrecognized Des Moines Metro Opera. On the North end of campus, construction is underway for the new 55,000 square foot and nearly $14 million Kent Campus Center, which is scheduled to be completed next fall. On the athletic front, the track and turf at Buxton Stadium was replaced in the summer, giving our student-athletes the benefit of competing on two of the finest surfaces in the Midwest. Inside Cowles Fieldhouse, our competition gymnasium received a facelift with the addition of a panel of photos recognizing the teams which compete in the venue and celebrating some of the finest student-athletes to step foot on our campus. Those individuals truly represent the championship tradition we have developed here at Simpson. While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships. Thank you for joining us today. We hope you enjoy your piece of the Simpson Experience and visit us again soon. Go Storm! John Sirianni, Director of Athletics

ailing from a prominent baseball family with strong ties to Simpson and the Indianola community, Ben Blake enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Simpson baseball team in 2011. Brother of Major League Baseball player Casey Blake and son of long-time Simpson pitching coach Joe Blake, Ben is 108-99 since taking over as head coach in 2007. He won his 100th game on April 9, 2011 when Simpson beat Wartburg in Waverly, 6-3 in nine innings. The win made Blake only the third head coach in the program’s 117 years of baseball to reach the 100-win plateau. He enters the season five wins shy of passing Larry Johnson (112253-3 in 19 seasons) for second on the all-time wins list. In 2008, Blake led Simpson to a 25-16 record and a secondplace finish in the Iowa Conference, putting six players on the all-conference team. In all, Blake has coached five all-region performers and 14 all-conference players. From 2004-05, Blake served as the team’s hitting coach before assuming the duties as associate head coach in 2006. Blake began his baseball career at NCAA Division I Oral Roberts University before transferring to Westark CC in Fort Smith, Ark. for the 1990 season. He played at Texas A&M in 1991 before transferring to Simpson in 1992. During the 1992 season, Blake earned first team all-region and second team all-conference honors. After a stint in the Cleveland Indians organization from 1993-94, Blake returned to Simpson to earn his bachelor’s degree in 1999. In 1998, he was a member of the Simpson football team. Ben and his wife, Keri, reside in Indianola with their son, Bo. 2

Athletic Benefit
Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest. New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide studentathletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s finest playing surfaces. Installed on the field was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the first of its kind to appear in the Midwest. The track is a fullpour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa. Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of different amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fieldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages. Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.

Simpson’s certified strength and conditioning staff will work with you to build a fitness plan that can reduce the risk of injury and improve your athletic performance. Athletic Training The athletic training staff at Simpson realizes that in order to have a successful season, the top priority for parents and coaches is the athlete’s health. The four certified athletic trainers on staff and their 30 students provide quality healthcare to over 500 athletes. BUILDING LEADERSHIP SKILLS NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Simpson is one of only two Division III schools in Iowa to participate in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Some of the highlights of Simpson’s program include: • Academic assistance through study tables for firstyear students and tutors for individual subjects • Community service opportunities with the Special Olympics and other agencies that provide programming for students with special needs • Mentoring program that provides support for first-year students by pairing them with an upper-class student SAAC The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is one way for you to get involved in athletics beyond your sports team. As a SAAC member, you’ll be a part of a leadership group that provides a voice for student-athletes at the college and within the NCAA.
