TABLE OF CONTENTS Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm softball team at the Simpson Softball Complex. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson community. The campus landscape is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. The Blank Performing Arts Center renovation is complete, giving a shiny new home to the Simpson theater program and the nationallyrecognized Des Moines Metro Opera. On the North end of campus, construction is underway for the new 55,000 square foot and nearly $14 million Kent Campus Center, which is scheduled to be completed next fall. On the athletic front, the track and turf at Buxton Stadium was replaced in the summer, giving our student-athletes the benefit of competing on two of the finest surfaces in the Midwest. Inside Cowles Fieldhouse, our competition gymnasium received a facelift with the addition of a panel of photos recognizing the teams which compete in the venue and celebrating some of the finest student-athletes to step foot on our campus. Those individuals truly represent the championship tradition we have developed here at Simpson. While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships. Thank you for joining us today. We hope you enjoy your piece of the Simpson Experience and visit us again soon. Go Storm! John Sirianni, Director of Athletics

O

ne of the greatest coaches in the history of college softball, hall of famer Henry Christowski enters his 17th season as the head coach of the Simpson softball team in 2012. Christowski added to his already impressive resume on April 2, 2011, becoming only the 28th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 500-win plateau thanks to a 5-0 win over Dubuque. At season’s end, Christowski’s record stood at 508-159-2 since taking over in 1996. Under Christowski’s leadership, the Storm captured the only two national championships in the college’s 150-year history, winning titles in 1997 and 1999 while finishing third in 1996 and 1998. He also has five Iowa Conference Championships (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010), eight NCAA tournament appearances (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2008, 2010) and four regional titles (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999). Christowski is a three-time IIAC Coach of the Year, winning in 1997, 1998 and 2010. His 2010 honor came after leading Simpson to its first conference title in nine years. In 1997 the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) recognized Christowski as the Division III National Coach of the Year following the Storm’s first national title. Christowski cemented his legacy as one of the top coaches in the nation with his induction into the NFCA Hall of Fame in December of 2007, the Association’s highest honor. Along with American International College Head Coach Judy Groff and Central College head coach George Wares, the trio comprised the NFCA Hall of Fame Class of 2007. Through the 2011 season, Christowski’s career winning percentage of .760 ranks sixth all-time in Division III, seventh among active Division III coaches and 16th in the history of college softball – in all divisions. His 508 career wins rank 20th among active Division III coaches and 29th in Division III all-time. Christowski is the only coach in NCAA softball history to win at least 200 games in his first five years as a head coach (201). Christowski became the winningest coach in program history on March 29, 2002 when the Storm defeated Webster (Mo.) 2-0. With a win over Dubuque on April 7, 2004, he reached the 300-win plateau faster than any 2

other Division III coach in history, needing only 362 games to attain the mark. He won his 400th game on March 11, 2008, a 14-0 win over Marietta. Christowski and his coaching staff earned the distinction of NFCA Coaching Staff of the Year in the 1999. Additionally, his staff claimed the NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year award in 1998 and 1999. Beginning his career at Norwalk High School in 1969, Christowski led the Warriors to a 440-179 record by the time he left in 1980. During his time at the prep level, Christowski coached four Iowa High School Hall of Fame pitchers (Dowling’s Missy Allen and Norwalk’s Kris Brogan, Jeannie Christowski and Cindy Johnson). Christowski earned his bachelor’s degree from Northewast Missouri State University (now Truman State) and received his master’s from Drake. Henry and his wife Patricia reside in Norwalk, Iowa.

Athletic Benefit

Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest. New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide studentathletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s finest playing surfaces. Installed on the field was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the first of its kind to appear in the Midwest. The track is a fullpour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa. Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of different amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fieldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages. Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT Strength & Conditioning Simpson’s strength and conditioning program will be an important element in your athletic experience at the college. Simpson’s certified strength and conditioning staff will work with you to build a fitness plan that can reduce the risk of injury and improve your athletic performance. Athletic Training The athletic training staff at Simpson realizes that in order to have a successful season, the top priority for parents and coaches is the athlete’s health. The four certified athletic trainers on staff and their 30 students provide quality healthcare to over 500 athletes. BUILDING LEADERSHIP SKILLS NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Simpson is one of only two Division III schools in Iowa to participate in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Some of the highlights of Simpson’s program include: • Academic assistance through study tables for firstyear students and tutors for individual subjects • Community service opportunities with the Special Olympics and other agencies that provide programming for students with special needs • Mentoring program that provides support for first-year students by pairing them with an upper-class student SAAC The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is one way for you to get involved in athletics beyond your sports team. As a SAAC member, you’ll be a part of a leadership group that provides a voice for student-athletes at the college and within the NCAA.
