Director of Athletics
John Sirianni Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm volleyball team at Cowles Fieldhouse. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson Community. The landscape of the campus is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. Highlighting the changes around campus are the opening of the brand-new, 55,000-square-foot Kent Campus Center and the remodel of Phieffer Dinning Hall. Also, the newly renovated Blank Performing Arts Center begins its second year in 2012. Change is underway on the athletic front as well. The volleyball and basketball teams will enjoy a brand new gym floor inside Cowles Fieldhouse and the football, soccer and track and field teams enter their second year of competition on the playing surfaces installed in Buxton Stadium last year. But the most exciting change is yet to come - the proposed renovation of the Cowles and Carse facilities. I invite you to learn more about this project on page 8. While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships. Thank you for joining us today and we hope to see you again soon. Go Storm! John Sirianni, Director of Athletics

SMITH’S CAREER
Lana Smith took over Simpson’s volleyball program in 1999, leading the Storm to a record of 252-196 during her 13 seasons at the helm. Under Smith, the Storm have risen to the top of the Iowa Conference and developed a reputation as one of the top teams in the region. The bulk of Smith’s success at Simpson has occurred in the past six seasons. Since 2006, the Storm have won two Iowa Conference Championships (2006, 2009) and appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (2006, 2008, 2009). Simpson has compiled a 3216 record against Iowa Conference opponents during that period, winning 20-plus games five seasons in a row from 2005-2009. She won her 200th match against Central College Nov. 7, 2008 in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament. In 2006, Smith led the Storm to the program’s first Iowa Conference Championship since 1994 and the team’s first ever Iowa Conference Tournament title. In 2001, she earned Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors as the Storm ended Central’s 56-match Iowa Conference winning streak. Smith served as an assistant at Simpson in 1998. During her tenure, Smith has coached two Iowa Conference MVPs, four All-Americans, seven all-region performers and 17 first team all-conference honorees. Smith helped put together one of the best seasons in program history in 2009, leading the Storm to their first outright Iowa Conference championship in 15 years. Simpson finished 21-14 overall and completed the conference season with only one loss, going 7-1. Smith and the Storm then cruised through the IIAC
2
Tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. In 2006 the Storm gave Smith her first conference title, sharing the crown with Central after going 27-11 and 6-2 in the league. The 27 wins were the most by a Simpson team since 1991 and still stands as the high-mark of Smith’s career. Simpson captured the IIAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Championship. There, the Storm beat Maryville (Tenn.) 3-0 in the opening round before falling to Rhodes 3-2.

Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest. New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide studentathletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s finest playing surfaces. Installed on the field was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the first of its kind to appear in the Midwest. The track is a fullpour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa. Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of different amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fieldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages. Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.
