The new boardroom

The Main reason that gives birth to this design idea was primarily to meet functional needs, in particular the need to create a new boardroom that can satisfy all the organizational and representative requirements of the corporation. After careful verification of the available areas neighboring the executive floor and after the confirmation of the impossibility of finding new spaces, it was decided to recover a volume dedicated to plants positioned on the top of opposite wing’s gable roof. Moreover, it gives the occasion to deal with negative aesthetic impact of that technical volume. Since it is visible from every point in the whole building.

“Bolla” is a room suspended on the roofs, made in a metal structure, covered with glass. The new environment is connected to the executive floor by an overhead pathway that connects the courtly hall (historic site of the board annual meeting) with the new boardroom area.

The new room is sized according to the current needs of the corporation, with 30 seats equipped with the most advanced, comfortable, and sustainable smart technologies, to allow real-time connection with the world.

The walkway is separated from the hall by a full glazed sliding door that determines the correct functions and privacy and gives a figurative experience that projects the corporation towards its future, the bridge is the concretization of the metaphor of how the corporation intends to face the new global challenges.

The expansion of the room - in the light of the Covid19 emergency - will allow the use of the most advanced technologies for sanitation, air quality, and environmental well-being.

The early objective of giving a new life to the office complex, containing quadruple buildings in different levels, was the idea of applying new design aiming at energy redevelopment of each building in such a way that each one in a self-made form can produce its own required energy amount and cycle that to distribute it to the municipal energy network of Torino metropolitan city.

This Biophilic design complex represented next-generation buildings: a selfsustaining,vintelligent structure that combines optimal performance with aesthetic beauty focused on human beings’ innate, emotional attraction to nature.

The project was designed with three key concepts in mind:

- Nature in the space: integrating water elements, courtyard gardens, and views of nature from inside.

- Nature of the space: adapting to human psychological and physiological responses to different spatial configurations, improving concentration and productivity.

- Natural analogs: using materials and patterns that evoke nature, including building elements that mimic shells and leaves, furniture with organic rather than geometric shapes, and visible wood grain.

02

The challengeable phase in order to imply the idea was to run the intervention without causing any kind of interruption to the daily routine work that leads to present different methods of building energy-efficient by mounting solar cells in a framework for installation instead of conventional insulation methods. Therefore the proposed solution was working on facades.

At the same time establishing an open space for the purpose of having places that make the work atmosphere more flexible toward smart-working, in addition to retrieving the common parts, which can also make strong relation between mentioned buildings and architectural spaces with different activities too.

Image capture: Aug 2020 Street View Turin, Piedmont Google

Since the main material used in the facades of all 4 building blocks was made of glass, it had a great effect on the heating and cooling of interior spaces in different seasons, so that radiation or lack of sunlight causes extreme heat and cold, followed by high energy consumption for enhancement and pleasure of working space.

Due to the high total sum of the average area of the facades, the idea of using the facades to reduce the level of energy consumption on the one hand and make architectural aesthetic changes, on the other hand, was proposed in order to implement the theory of Biophilic design. The challenge was to cover the facade, which in addition to creating transparency, consider the maximum amount of sunlight as an energy source to generate direct current energy. Hence, photovoltaic glasses were used as power generators with the aim of absorbing sunlight and converting it into electricity.

The design path has been set to enhance the property by passing through the convergence of an OVERALL PROJECT that has the ability to collect several essential factors:

- The quality of life and beauty;

- A correct marketing operation;

- The recovery of the memory of the historic building, which contemplates the livability and quality of the houses with the architectural quality of the new building;

- Evidence of its commercial, communicative, and expressive value;

To make the final result attractive and sexy to achieve the targets, therefore a contemporary and evolved project in the language was needed that has the coordination of everything as its main objective, through a common expression of finishes and details.

Meeting the family needs

The intervention has been done for a residential villa in the upstream hills of the Givoletto.

Based on the requests of the family, a free and open distribution of spaces in the plan considered in the restoration phase of planimetry while making feasble the connections among the spaces in question.

The idea of evaluating the greenery spaces around and the combination of interior and exterior space at the same time pushed us to play with the shadows and lights by using some particular openings and vertical shaders, giving privacy to each side and making a more vivid atmosphere to the villa for all the members of the family.

Recharacterizing the home

The renovation project started taking the first step by emphasizing the potential of the residential building which was almost abandoned and empty by offering an open horizon toward the mountaintop of Monviso by recharacterizing the main facade. And continued to present a functionally exposed architecture as the symbol of the contemporary era, that is a giant opening in which the stairs and the elevator and three different levels can be screened.

05

During the design of this project, the frontal volume of the building become fundamentally reconsidered, thus a new staircase was designed to bridge the levels, the external space of the entrance door became welcoming and covered, a front and a side balcony were added to the volume that in the meantime the lateral balcony designed with a direct view of the mountains attached to the third floor, and finally covered internal parking was brought up.

Two finishing main materials are also presented in the intervention phases in order to represent the vernacular character of the site consisting of wood and ceramic floating tiles. the main facade is equipped with rolling curtains to control the light entering inside in addition to the greenhouse.

Castellazzo Casaforte

The project proposal of recovery and functionalization of the building – for a new residential and receptive ambient – has the will to restore the existing building and at the same time realize new external volumes at the service of the same.

Particular attention was paid to access for disabled people and vertical connections as the existing scale will have to be recovered and used in its entirety in order to connect the different levels.

The building, located in the Municipality of Azeglio, is a stronghold called “Castellazzo” from the 11th century and it is identified as a national monument. The tower, currently in a poor state of preservation, is composed of a simple main volume with a second volume sheltered inside which is the staircase.

06

At the service of the Castellazzo stronghold, the project involves the construction of a residential place. The new volume will be positioned in such a way as to preserve the wooded area, without modifying the course of the land and with the maintenance of the existing trees, all to integrate the existing nature with the project proposal. The voluntary choice to propose the new volumes as objects flattened on the ground is made in order to limit the environmental impact in the entire area of the Castellazzo.

The block faces outwards, with large glazed openings and some walls of the volumes will be covered with steel to be almost neutral and also reflective of the surrounding woodland, and thus make the intervention as mimetic as possible.

The entrance is welcoming through a suspended wooden walkway that creeps from nature and is in turn invaded by the surrounding greenery.

The horizontal paths will be further mitigated by the numerous trees of the wood positioned outside the complex. The positioning of the block has taken place ensuring that the new volumes never enter the ideal visual cone of the tower.

The new service volume will have to architecturally dialogue with the tower through the following features: a volumetric dimension that reproduces the volume of the existing building on a smaller scale, a location adequately spaced from the tower so as to minimize visual overlaps, a union in the glass between the two artifacts, a clear and distinct architectural form, an adequate arrangement of the openings, the voids, and the architectural fullness and finally the covering with materials that can perfectly integrate with the stone and the brick of the tower.

Sommariva

High rise chilling out

The realization of a new and innovative real estate project, “Sommariva Loft”, an operation resulting from the extensive renovation of an old building, with the creation of 4 exclusive lofts of the size of large four-room apartments of about 150 square meters.

The housing units will be characterized by large terraces with gazebos, unique mezzanines and hanging gardens, which will be framed by the skyscraper of the Piedmont Region, the institutional symbol of Turin and the “Italia 61” park, a real green lung of the district and of the whole city.

07

The crisis caused by Covid-19 has highlighted a series of criticalities in the way of living the home. The need to live in larger rooms has been re-evaluated, with open spaces, terraces and gardens. The need to have a space, even small but isolated, exclusively dedicated to smart working has become indispensable.

Intermediate areas, passing between the internal and external dimensions, represent filters and decompression valves between the inside and the outside; courtyards and other common condominium spaces become places of aggregation, socialization, physical well-being and leisure.

Today, one of the aspects that most animate civil society is attention to environmental issues. It is possible to implement virtuous behaviors and actions capable of significantly reducing the ecological footprint and supporting these green actions are supported by technological tools designed to be efficient, ensure low consumption and reduce the environmental impact.

So the Tower Loft design intervention was born in the Nizza Millefonti district, under the new skyscraper of the Piedmont Region, designed by Archistar Massimiliano Fuksas.

Tower Loft was born inside a large building and an above ground floor, located in Via Sommariva n.5 in Turin, a solid reinforced concrete structure, built in the 1960s, to replace old laboratories and warehouses that housed a supermarket, a car dealership and a rubber processing business, bombed and rendered unusable during the Second World War. The flat roof and the courtyard, elements enclosed within the horseshoe-shaped structure, blend well with the residential project.

The Tower Loft complex tried to be designed through an integrated set of design attention, construction solutions, and plant equipment of absolute innovation toward the idea of integrating cities with more exposure to nature and, much more performing technologies and materials guarantee comfort and maximum quality of living, reducing polluting emissions and minimizing management costs.

The followed approach in this interior design project started with the idea of maximum functionality paralleled to the aesthetic response of the space. Thus the key consideration in the design was the question of whether this design “works” or functions for its purpose. It also has been thought about carefully that the aesthetic response to this interior and its furnishings take into consideration the social and economic conditions as well as the materials and technology of our contemporary era.

It is strongly believed that the best building and the best interior is that in which there is no obvious disparity between the many elements that make up the totality. Among these elements are the structural aspects of a building, the furniture, and the architectural graphics, as well as the interior details.

In the beginning, the importance of understanding how and by who will the kitchen be used has been completely assessed. So ideally, the space should ensure that the user is comfortable working and moving around the space, so its best to keep in mind different scenarios.

In this project, the ergonomy which is the science of designing the environment to fit the people that use them, not the people to fit the environment, played a key role in the design of the kitchen design. Therefor a triangular distribution for princilpal elements considered in order to reach the high level of kitchen efficiency and usability. Whether it’s by sharing a meal at a restaurant or preparing a home-cooked meal together, food does in fact, bring people together. With that in mind, the kitchen is placed at the heart of homes, giving residents a space to cook, dine, and spend quality time with their families and friends.

Since the living room might host all sorts of activities, whether that’s a cocktail party or family movie night, the planning for real life has been chosen for the way of design so it has been tried to understand what ‘living’ means to each person”.

This living room area has been defined first by the use and then the elements that can physically define the space. To start this process when planning, Identifying what is going to happen in the room has been done. Once functionality is figured out based on the client’s Lifestyle, the Tv set and the sofa and the rest of the place expanded on the formal living room areas. These include day-to-day functions but also some that you wouldn’t normally formally identify but nonetheless should be taken into consideration.

The design moved on with the fact that humans spend one-third of life in a state of sleep. This is a convincing argument in order to pay close attention to the interior of the bedroom. Based on the psychological aspects of space, a maximum of three basic colors have been chosen: warm Beige, white, and wooden color all themed in neutral grey color.

The main principle considered in furniture arrangement in the bedroom was minimalism, which means that only the most necessary items are present. Queen of the bedroom - bed.

Based on the features of the room regarding its opening and light, no need was observed to cover the whole bedroom just with a single strong beam of light. Therefore, providing separate illumination of specific zones is used: hidden ceiling light, ornamental light, and sidelights for reading books and magazines. A TV set also that makes possible to do some daily work has been donsidered too.

The idea of a dark bathrrom started toward giving the room a completely different style, while still keeping the more classic tones.

Black bathroom tiles can be used to accentuate lighter accessories. But at the same time spreding the white theme could make the room more comfort. That white colors were added in order to create a more ‘chic’ atmosphere in the bathroom.

Design an inviting space that tells a story

The purpose of this design was to create a unique dining room that provokes intrigue and leads to conversation among guests.

Whether it’s through striking artwork, colors, or furnishings, it was important to craft that unique space that reflects the personality and lifestyle of the homeowner, while also ensuring the space is well designed.

We speak about a space that strikes a balance between creative design and functional use when devising this unique dining room.

10

Before designing a space, for us, it was important to understand the function that it will serve. Will the space be used for formal dinner parties or casual gatherings? How much seating is required? Should the space promote intimate conversations or large group conversations? Does the space need to serve or store formal dinnerware? Because during a social gathering, much of a guest’s time is spent in the dining room, we tried to create a room that encourages conversation among guests, which means the space shouldn’t be too noisy or insight of many distractions. Particularly in an openconcept home, it was challenging to ensure a private and intimate setting without sacrificing style.

Therefore, the table is placed in the center of attention, so that the dinner companions are the main focus. that’s why the dining table is the focal point of the space, guests will feel more compelled to take a seat and communicate with one another. Once the table is situated, the arrangement of other furnishings and accessories was considered so that they complement this focal point.

Since the lighting is hugely important it has been avoided downlights whenever possible, especially directly over chairs, to eliminate dark shadows on guests’ faces.

Therefore, utilizing the dramatic chandeliers, with geometric rounded pendants that echo the shape of the room, completes the desired feeling of the space awe.
