My city, cradle of my beginnings and throne to my adolescence, Ravaged by colonial conquest, imperialist tradition. Land owned by natives, and soiled by white man. Neglected and passed to black and brown. White man couldn’t find its gold, wondered how we found it too. How we become rich in the thresholds of poverty and concrete? How we bare fruit from soil they decimated? Ghetto bird and air plane are my lullaby, without them I cannot sleep. My hood, draped over my shoulders. Champions of the streets.

I moved to the greater Los Angeles area about 10 years ago. As a kid, I lived here briefly for about 2 years in the “Jungles” as people would call it, right down the street from the Crenshaw mall. At age 11, I moved out of state, back to the south. I just remembered that this city had so much to offer and I knew that LA was where I belonged. So I decided to come back to pursue my artistic endeavors. Currently I live off Crenshaw and Imperial. These are two streets that hold a historical black experience. This community has seen its fair share of ups and downs. From the golden age of the 1970’s Lakers playing at the historic Forum here in Inglewood, to the Rodney King Riots that happened in South Central LA. The streets and the people of my community tell a story that keeps me motivated and inspire me to keep pushing for the life that I want to create and the legacy that I want to leave behind. Just like Adolf Dulan the founder of Dulan’s Soul Food on Crenshaw and Westmount Ave, or the graffiti collective Rocking The Nation who came together to paint the Great Wall of Crenshaw that sits on Crenshaw Blvd and Fiftieth Street in Hyde Park; I want to leave something behind even if it the smallest tree in the community for the community. - Du’Ron

Try to see the light in the darkness. Don’t let obstacles and walls that are blocking your path stop you from succeeding—There are always multiple routes to your destination. Have more than hope in yourself—believe in yourself. The world may seem heavy/on your shoulders, however find the positivity in all that’s negative in your life and the world might feel a little less heavy . So smile. Breathe. These are the hardest times but it won’t always be so dark...The sun comes out eventually. -DeeplyRooted

A note to my younger self: When you climbed up to the rooftop to see the stars You were looking in the mirror. When they told you to straighten your hair and stay out the sun They were looking in the mirror. Tied to your roots, you are special. So keep your chin up when life is low. Cause through concrete your rose will grow. Follow in the steps of the ones you love and admire. Remember to pick out what’s best for you and your desires. You’ll grow up soon. And see a world you never knew. Without a ghetto bird in your view. Till then, just make do.

Stop watching so much porn. It’s fucking with your psyche. Remember no matter what you think, women know more and have been through more. Take care of your body and keep meditating, you’re onto something. Once you’re ready, you should test out some psychedelic mushrooms. Keep it up, you’re doing good. Everything turns out good in the end.

My name is Karla. Both of my parents migrated from Mexico to Harbor City, where they met. My mom from Michoacan, and my dad from Tijuana, but he was born in Nayarit. My roots run deep but this is still my soil. I’ve lived here all my life, and truthfully, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I feel infinite gratitude for the human experience that I am living in, and this is where it started. I grew up with all kinds of kids, in all kinds of situations, I know everybody from here is built so resilient. I hope everybody knows they can be as big as they wanna be, and I hope I always make everyone I cross paths with feel that way.
I’ll always have love for the city that raised me. It taught me a lot about the ugly and the pretty things. There’s a lot of good people and good things coming from here, its just important for us to focus on the right things and give lots of love. Everybody has the power to do anything. Recognize it, practice it, use it, change the world! WE ARE DOING IT. You only have control of you, you can only do you, so do the best. I wanna give a shoutout to my tribe, my homies, my loved ones, all the teachers and lovers along the way. Keep loving. - Karla RIPYAXZA LONGLIVELILGRIZZ

So, I’m not originally from South Central.
It’s been a couple years since I moved out here from New York, but I can honestly say it has felt like such a homecoming. Something as small as walking to the corner store and having a relationship with [Black] businessowners makes me feel at home. Being a part of a community of beautiful Black people has been such an affirming experience, and it keeps me from going crazy as I study at USC, which is why I moved out here in the first place. Coming from an academic environment, I’ve heard many students say they feel unsafe in South Central, which is usually just some backwards, anti-Black bullshit the gentrifiers be peddling; but the truth is, as a Black, non-binary person, I feel unsafe wherever I go. When I came out to my siblings, they told me to be careful of how I express myself so as to not draw the violent attention of ignorant people. That’s something I’ve internalized, and it’s proved itself to be true. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been accosted by men in the streets of New York and Chicago for walking around in my heels at night. Undoing my trauma has definitely been a process. There was a time when I felt unsafe in South Central, but it all melted away when I went to Pray For The Hood this past Juneteenth. I pulled up in one of my cutest fits – skirt, heels, purse and all – and everybody had nothing but amazing things to say about it! I felt seen and loved in all my Black, genderqueer glory, and I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather live in LA. Shouts to South Central for welcoming this East Coast transplant with open arms and an open heart, I love y’all! - Gulet

Dear little Jamie-Lee, You light up rooms that you walk in, no matter how shy you get. When it’s showtime, it’s SHOWTIME. You don’t let any of the outside voices influence you. You become fearless. You are so fearless! You create little worlds everywhere that you go & it doesn’t really matter to you if people decide to come in. One of my favorite things about you is that your arms are always open. Little Jamie-Lee, you’re a little bossy sometimes but please don’t ever lose your voice. Speak up every time! Remember in the 3rd grade when you learned how to spell perseverance & you couldn’t stop thinking about the definition? Never stop thinking about the definition. Because it’s going to get hard. But show up for yourself every time. No matter how uncomfortable or ugly it gets. Create those worlds. Love yourself in every single one of them. I love you, little Jamie-Lee. You are beautiful. You were made for this. Your light matters. You matter. Every single time! Love, Jamie-Lee B.

Pasadena’s undergone mass gentrification.
What were once beautiful neighborhoods, filled with people that were akin to many of us, have been replaced with white folk and white homes. There’s a history many of us don’t know. There’s history I don’t know due to its erasure. The hood is the northwest right now. It’s beautiful. It’s strong. It’s community. There’s happiness here. But it’s still under attack. Black and brown folx have intentions of buying back what was taken and we will. Our spirit and energy is already here and we won’t allow it to recede. We love you and we got you, ‘Dena. South El Monte, A place where I hear the voices of my people, and the next generation of small-town Brown skin babies, I pray they make it big. I can see it all in my mind, a place of beauty, tough love, childhood memories and lessons learned. Sunday mass with the fam to start the week off right. Singing praises to the Lord y La Virgencita. Copying my Abuelita in church learning phrases in Spanish. Nachos after church sold by mi Abuelito, eventually sold by me. As I’m counting the change he says to me sweetly, “Vas aprender a trabajar duro eh.” Breakfast at “Tepeyac” with Mami, chilaquiles straight bringing me to life. At the “Center Dance” me and my girl battle and get that 10 dollar cash prize. I split it with her and I’m left with enough for a couple Hot Cheetos and a vanilla ice cream. Hitting up Legg Lake to feed the ducks and watch ‘em go crazy for the bread. Walking the streets in the summertime, eating popsicles, drinking Slurpees. Elote man love. Brown Love. Tying my wavy hair up halfway with a red shoelace to match my fit. Continuing to walk the streets, Fearlessly. Balling it up in the front yard, finessing the boys at their own game. Waving hello to my neighbors, family, Raza. My humble city, thankful for what it taught me, above all to dream. Constantly exploring, discovering more spaces, different places. But always returning to South El Monte, my humble hood, my home.

note from the designers This project was created for people like us. For little Black and Brown children — for Black and Brown womxn/men/folx — so they can see this and see us being celebrated. It’s more than earrings, scrunchies, and backdrops. It’s about the lifestyle this project embraces. It’s about the energy everyone embodied when they put on the pieces. We wanted to create a space for ourselves, a place where we could kick it with the homies and say “fuck 12.” This started with a design and vision by Star, then it turned into an embodiment of sisterhood, culture and self-worth. It’s about growing up in the hood, knowing that all odds are against you yet being the unapologetic product of that. It’s living in your colors. Everyone in this project embodied real, unapologetic love. The production of the project felt like summertime, setting up shoots that felt like my childhood. Its a tribute to the ones that came before, a nostalgic celebration of what we are. This project would have not been possible without my photographer, Yen and my co-designer, Graciela. - Star Angel & Graciela
You know, I thought about writing a poem being that I am a poet, but honestly, putting this zine together really is my spoken word to y’all. I am so grateful I am to be alive past the age of 17. How happy I am to have an actual roof over my head and not just the roof of a car. I am my sunshine. I have an enormous heart with ears that listen. Guiding my energy through truth and love, and I just want to share it with y’all... I hope for that energy to be mirrored from one to the other. Floating through the universe, unapologetically me at all times. Not allowing any cycles to continue where I am going—cutting off the dead weight—which may make some upset; however, my happiness with myself is far more important than staying stagnant for others’ happiness. I am living for me. I give to the universe, this. Not a spell or a wish, but speaking my happiness to existence. - Star Angel

222 My Mother, T’pring Star To the woman who has taught me how to unconditionally love, who supported me at every phase of my life, even when I was wylin’. Yoo. One time, I told my mom back in 2012, senior year in high School: Me: mom I invited the girl I’m about to fight to the house. My mom: OMG Tabitha, well just don’t be loud! (See what I mean, support every phase of life haha). To the woman who gave me an excellent credit score at the age of 20 ha! Whose love language is to send me a song and spit a lyric—her way of letting me know she misses me or is thinking of me. (Or booking a flight and texting me saying she gon’ need be to pick her up from LAX, and is staying with me— yeah mama, I miss you too). Because you know when Candy come on we Grooovin!!! Or Between the Sheets! Haha, that’s our jam. Mami, I know the struggle was hella real raising me on your own, and we have had very hard times, but I am so proud of you. You have given me everything I can ever ask for, and then some! A woman who has dedicated her life to motherhood – to her chitlins. You have truly given me an amazing life and an amazing heart. Thank you for supporting my dreams, like forreal. You like forreal believe in your girl, I am truly blessed to have you as my support and as my mother. Everything I was able to achieve is because I have had you every step of the way, so this is a mad Thank You... Thank you so much for everything. You are my favorite person, my best friend, my hero, and my heart. To the loveliest woman I ever laid eyes on. I love you mami. Thank you for loving me for me.

Jesus, I got into so much trouble but y’all were always there and never ratted me out to my moms—real ones. Thank you for always being there for me. To Deandre— I love you. My heart 444 ever yours. I hope wherever you are in the heavens—you think of me. I close my eyes and can hear laughing if I listen close enough. You matter—I remember. Para siempre, mi vida—I’ll Meet You Back on The Block when it’s my time. Rest beautifully. All the Xs and all the Os. To my Cousins, Achi & Mylee— I love y’all. The most selfless human I know... thankful for you and your loving heart. To my Grandmother— My Guide, my angel, my teacher—the sweetest woman I have ever known. I miss you every day and I think of you always. I carry your wisdom with me everywhere I go. I see the angels you send me. I be talking to you all the time as I look up at the sky and you answer me faster than Google! Haha. Thank you for listening to me... I know you’re probably in London or Hawaii haha but you always stop to hear my prayers. I am so grateful for you. To YEN, who delivered that Splahh!
