01 2018 SoWE Studio Landlord Improvement Nelson, New Zealand
Located off the eastern shores of the South Island, Nelson Community College is a 4,800 sq. ft. concrete building serving the community. This facade improvment involved replacing the existing sidewalk canopy and raising it to reveal the existing transom windows. Additionally, vertical louvers were placed at the second floor curtain wall to reduce solar heat gain while preserving views to the east. The entire building received a new paint treatment to break up the monolithic facade and accentuate the existing openings. Lastly, corten steel planters were placed on the south facade driveway level. This project is currently under construction.

Offering a mix of eastern & western medicine, the design focus of this animal hosiptal was to offer a fun, natural atmosphere. The lobby was designed with minimalistic tones for a calming, non-stimulating environment to animal patrons and their owners. The benches were designed and fabricated by myself with milled 1x poplar strips (cushions were custom ordered). The custom dog profile wall treatment in the lobby was also handpainted with help from the client and his family by projecting an illustrator file onto the wall and tracing. The back of house incorporated all new equipment, oxygen and nitrous oxide lines throughout, as well as a lead-lined radiology room, which required extensive collaboration with MEP and specialty consultants.

The tenant improvement for CDM Cleaners incorporated full service dry cleaning equipment at the back of house with an open eye catching entry. Wood tiles were custom fabricated out of poplar wood to create a geometric 3D wall with a recessed wall washer fixure above. Custom wallpaper and vinyl graphics were designed for the entry using drycleaning graphics commonly found on clothes tags. Winner of American Drycleaner 2014 Grand Prize Plant Design Award and featured on cover of American Drycleaner (totally serious).

08 2011 Professional Residential Remodel Costa Mesa, CA
The exterior design of the Mitchell residence was tailored to create living spaces outdoors which could be utilized as often and frequently as any room indoors. Two large pivot doors were designed in the existing dining room to divide and partially enclose the outdoor space which included a dining patio, sun patio, and fire pit. The interior remodel involved replacing a restrictive partition wall with a kitchen island and unique shelving system in order to open up the main living spaces. The dining room was placed outside to make room for a new breakfast bar and work station.

The Wusteblume Sandbox was commissioned by the Die Rasselbande Preschool, and was constructed from material out of the backyards and garages of the local community. The design-build group, two recent architecture graduates, sought the involvement of parents and local community members in order to achieve a design that was sustainable and affordable. Flyers were distributed in the area asking for parents, neighbors and community members to donate unused 2x4’s left over from finished or forgotten projects. With the community’s help the project was able to achieve it’s design goal and accommodate the preschool’s budget, and additional had funds left over for a second design phase. This phase will incorporate supplemental elements which will support a variety of new activities on the site. When the second phase of construction is finished, canopies will shade each wing of the sandbox, the center platform will house a water tank where hoses will be stored and used to incorporate water-play, and the beach seat will accompany an interactive wall.

12 2010 Professional Visioning Project San Diego, CA
PROGRAM GOAL: To develop a framework for the sustainability of San Diego’s Historic North Park Main Street District that can act directly as a catalyst for sustainable development of the North Park community and as a model for other similar urban communities. The Sustainable North Park Main Street Program (SNPMS) identified strategies for achieving this goal, including: Developing standards for public facilities; Identifying existing resources available to business and private property owners; Sustainable business practices; and, Pursuing the funding needed to implement and sustain the program, including public and private sources. *2011 SDAF Orchid winner for Planning Policies
13 2010 Professional Community Planning San Diego, CA
PROGRAM GOAL: Using the results of the Vision Plan, this Implementation Plan refines these images of North Park and uses them as a basis for illustrative diagrams which describe the possible interventions in practical terms. Using individual buildings as precise case studies, this plan is intended to be used as a handbook for Main Street Staff to educate and inspire building owners and business operators about how they can participate in the broader vision of a Sustainable North Park Man Street. Whereas steps were taken to implement sustainable measures on a larger scale, the Implementation Plan focused on several existing buildings within North Park. These buildings serve as example as to how existing businesses in potentially historic buildings can begin to introduce sustainable measures in design and practice. *2011 SDAF Orchid winner for Planning Policies
14 2009 Cal Poly Design Village Competition San Louis Obispo, CA
Imagining a post apocalyptic scenario, the design team set out to gather rejected material for this project. The selection process was limited to repetitive pieces. Using the available served to imitate a condition present in the post apocalyptic design process. Reducing the element of preconception and building upon the logic of repetition the structure connects fiction and real. Resettlement builds upon the remainders of a world mine war. The global event had climatic repercussions destroying most life. Those that survived utilized the everlasting mine shells for its geometric qualities. The San Louis Obispo survivors utilized their mine as an outpost and water collection device. *Best Structural Design for Cal Poly Design Build Competition in 2009
15 The purpose of the terrain frame is to exhibit a spectrum of possibility in movement. A serialization of wood triangles fixed upon a specific axis creates an unlimited ordering system for unique outcomes both ordered and chaotic. The frame and design structure itself acts as the canvas while its imbedded kinetic capabilities create the finalized design.
16 Made from sheets of cork and single-ply basswood backing, the cube calendar acts as a weekly calendar which is capable of hosting notes and the like. One side of each cube is operable in a way which allows the cubes themselves to store daily items.
17 Using PVC pipe and wood, the wine rack employs traditional building materials to serve a new purpose. Two rectilinear shelves were introduced the PVC and wood frames for structural support and to house additional wine and beverage accoutrements.
1 8 Framed strips of poplar around a plywood base, and recessed neodymium magnets. These hangers were designed to provide an attractive contemporary to the traditional clothes hanger. They are set to hang on a tube steel frame which allows for secondary storage of empty clothes hangers. The hangers can be placed anywhere and glide gently along the tube steel frame.
1 9 Recycled 2x lumber and milled gluelam beams compose the bedframe. The canopy frame above acts as a soft lightbox at night. It was constructed from canvas over a poplar frame. String lights were hung at different heights to create a starry night effect.
20 Remanats from douglas fir gluelam beams were repurposed as table top and bench seating. Cold rolled steel plates were cut and welded to create a unique frame supporting the heavy tops.
