The Cork International Choral Festival, now in its 61st year, continues to grow from strength to strength as Cork’s oldest festival, having firmly established itself as one of the premier choral festivals in the world. Noted for the warmth of its welcome, the diversity of programmes and workshops, as well as the high standard of gala concerts and formal competitions, the festival continues to entice visitors from all over the world to come and experience Cork as the ultimate cultural destination. With so many highlights that I am personally looking forward to, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but seeing Cork come alive with song and having visitors from all over the world visit our beautiful city is without doubt a true success of the Cork International Choral Festival. I would like to take the opportunity to recognise and compliment the organisers of the Festival for their hard work, dedication and commitment, ensuring that this wonderful event happens so seamlessly, all the while positioning Cork at the centre of choral music in Europe. In addition, I would like to thank the many volunteers, patrons and venues for their continued support of the Festival, without whom this Festival would not be possible. Director’s Introduction Beirim fíor chaoin fáilte romhaibh go léir ag an 61ú Cór Fhéile Idirnáisiúnta Chorcaí 2015. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh árd-thaithneamh as na laethanta atá romhainn. I am delighted to welcome you to the 61st Festival and I am confident our audiences will again experience a feast of choral music in all its historical and national diversity over the period of the festival. The extensive programme of events highlighted in this programme feature Gala Concerts, Fringe Concerts, an international competition of high standing, a seminar on new choral music, national adult and school competitions, educational activities, and church performances. They will take place in venues all over the city and county, indeed even as far away as Dingle, to ensure that Cork continues to be the place to be, to participate, experience, and enjoy the wonderful sounds of the human voice. 15 visiting foreign choirs and ensembles from Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Israel, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, and Sweden, will add colour, spectacle, and international diversity to our activities, including our Choral and Sacred Trails, Meet and Greet presentations, and Friendship Concert Series. It is a particular pleasure to highlight the highly regarded Cork-based vocal ensemble Madrigal ’75 in our opening gala concert on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of their founding. This concert, in which they will be joined by the Cork Baroque Orchestra, will showcase the present high standing of Irish choirs and instrumentalists. Important new works by Ian Wilson and Eoghan Desmond will be premiered at the festival as part of the Seminar on New Choral Music. We maintain our visual arts initiative with the commission of a series of ceramic plaques from Etain Hickey, the noted ceramicist. I take this opportunity to thank the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland, Cork City Council and Cork County Council for their continued financial grant aid, and to Indaver Ireland, AIB Bank, the city’s hotels, and our other sponsors whose support allows us to plan and present this festival which is of major local, national and international significance. I acknowledge all our collaborators including CCI (Chamber Choir Ireland), CMC, AOIC, CIT Cork School of Music, Cork City Music Library, Féile na Bealtaine (Dingle), and the many city and county venues, particularly CIT Cork School of Music, St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Triskel Christchurch, The Masonic Hall, St. Anne’s Church, Shandon and the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne, who make their venues available to us to present different types of concerts, and to extend the impact of this festival to a wider audience base. Madrigal ‘75 Vocal Ensemble James Taylor (Conductor)

Madrigal ‘75 is a vocal ensemble based in Cork City. Founded in 1975 by university students, the choir now comprises of a diverse combination of singers from all walks of life. Madrigal ‘75 has developed a reputation as a vocal ensemble of great skill and beauty, performing repertoire from the 14th century to contemporary choral works, both sacred and secular, including first performances of new commissions. In 2005 Madrigal ‘75 was a prominent participant in the Cork European Capital of Culture events and toured France as cultural ambassadors for the city. Madrigal ‘75 is also the winner of the Carols for Christmas 2006 and 2012 competitions on RTE Lyric FM. Other successes include Best Choir at the Montreux Festival, several Best Performances and First Prize awards at successive Cork International Choral Festivals, and the Irish Choir of the Year award. In 2013, Madrigal ‘75 returned to Montreux and was the highest placed choir in the mixed-voice category

as well as being a Grand Prix Finalist. In its 40 year history, the choir has performed with several of Ireland’s leading ensembles, including the RTE Vanbrugh String Quartet and the Orchestra of St Cecilia. In 2008 and 2011, the choir presented the closing and opening concerts respectively of the East Cork Early Music Festival, followed by the highlight of 2014 when the choir was invited to present the atmospheric Evocations concert for the Cork International Choral Festival. 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Madrigal ‘75, and to celebrate this occasion, the choir has a busy year of concerts planned as well as a tour to Europe later in the year. The choir is delighted to be performing the opening Concert of the 2015 Cork International Choral Festival. Since January 2007, Madrigal ‘75 has been directed by James Taylor, organist and harpsichordist, who, having held posts in the UK, New Zealand and Canada now lectures at CIT Cork School of Music. James has performed concerts in Canada and the USA, across Europe and New Zealand as well as participating in numerous television and radio broadcasts as a soloist and accompanist. His latest project is a recording of organ works on the newly restored organ in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral. The vocal ensemble Madrigal ‘75, together with Barry Douglas (piano), Alex Petcu-Colan (percussion), and the Chiral Quartet, are Artistsin-Residence to the CIT Cork School of Music.

national and international stages including the National Concert Hall, Dublin; the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London and the Händel-Halle, Leipzig. She has performed with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Welsh National Opera, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Irish Baroque Orchestra; and has worked with conductors such as Charles Mackerras, William Christie, Alessandro Anissimov and Prionnsias O’Duinn. She is a lecturer in the Department of Creative and Performing Arts, WIT.

Cork Baroque Orchestra was set up as ‘resident band’ for East Cork Early Music Festival. Conceived as a response to the growing interest in historically inspired music performance, CBO provides a precious opportunity for Irish and Irish-based musicians to work with the world’s leading early music specialists, as part of a high-level, professional orchestra. CBO made its debut in 2013 (to great acclaim) with Finnish harpsichordist and conductor Aapo Hakkinen and; in 2014 one of the world’s foremost Baroque violinists, Elizabeth Wallfisch, led a programme of Vivaldi, Schmelzer, Telemann and a new work by the Clonakilty-based Justin Grounds. According to the Irish Examiner the result was “...memorable for (its) energy, sense of phrasing, dynamic contrasts, and brilliance”.

Deirdre Moynihan’s CD of Vivaldi Cantatas was released by Naxos in 2014 to widespread critical acclaim. Her voice was described as “unfailingly beautiful in tone” (International Record Review) and “perfectly suited to baroque music” (Music Web International). A second 2014 release, ‘From The Olive Tree’, with classical guitarist Alec O’ Leary, received praise for the “striking clarity” of Deirdre’s vocal performance. She has sung as a soloist with, amongst others, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Crash Ensemble. 2014 included performances at Kilkenny Arts Festival, Ardee Baroque and a series of concerts in Japan. 2015 includes performances with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra & RTÉ ConTempo quartet in addition to a recital at KBC Great Music in Irish Houses Festival. Deirdre holds an MA in Vocal Performance from the Cork School of Music. She is also the Programmes Manager for Music Network.

Rajaton

Rajaton - the voice is boundless The Finnish word Rajaton translates as “boundless” - a word that so accurately describes the way this six-voice a cappella ensemble approaches music. Regularly performing around a hundred concerts and workshops each year, Rajaton exposes their audiences to the kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style, and stage presentation that has made them a phenomenon on the world stage. Performing at concert halls, churches, jazz and choral festivals, this distinct group of musicians approaches all styles of music with the same level of commitment and integrity, making it difficult to imagine an audience that they could not inspire, or a type of music they could not make their own. In their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap that often exists between classical and mainstream convention. Rajaton has released 13 different albums, their latest conquest being a children’s album, Suomen lasten lauluja (Songs of Finland’s Children), released in 2012. The last three of their albums were released through the group’s own record label, Boundless Records. In the autumn of 2014, Rajaton celebrated 17 years of music-making with one double platinum, three platinum and eight gold records in Finland and worldwide record sales drew near 400,000 copies altogether. Ever seeking new artistic challenges, the group has grown immeasurably through collaborations with other a cappella artists, including The King’s Singers and The Real Group, as 12

well as productions with film directors and choreographers. But it is perhaps their deep passion for choral art, their generosity of spirit and their sheer enjoyment of singing that has won the hearts and acclaim of audiences and critics everywhere. Their energy - infectious; their ability to entertain and inspire - Rajaton! The voice is boundless.

Chamber Choir Ireland Chamber Choir Ireland is the country’s flagship choral ensemble under the internationally celebrated and multi-award-winning choral conductor, Paul Hillier, as Artistic Director. Formerly the National Chamber Choir of Ireland, the Choir is known for its unique approach to programming and has gained a reputation for the high artistic quality of its performances. The Choir remains a thriving force on a very active choral scene both at home and abroad. Since its inception, the Choir has made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary Irish choral music through its commitment to commissioning new work. The Choir’s repertoire spans from early to contemporary music, regularly commissioning pioneering vocal work by both Irish and International composers. Commissions have included composers such as Gerald Barry, Tarik O’Regan, Kevin Volans, Andrew Hamilton, Siobhán Cleary, and Jennifer Walshe. The Choir has a strong commitment to touring in Ireland and continues to develop its touring network in order to present high quality choral concerts to audiences all around the country. Internationally, the Choir has toured in Europe, Asia and South America and in 2011 undertook its first US tour with the assistance of Culture Ireland as part of Imagine

Gala Concerts

Ireland, a year of Irish Arts in America 2011 following on from a performance in The White House in March 2011. In 2014, the Choir performed in the prestigious Diaghilev Festival, Perm, Russia. In recent years the Choir has made a renewed commitment to recording with recent releases including One Day Fine on the RTE Lyric FM label and Acallam na Senórach on the Harmonia Mundi label, as well as a recording to accompany the publication of Choirland: An Anthology of Irish Choral Music in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre and the Association of Irish Choirs. Future recordings include a recording of works by Gerald Barry also featuring the Crash Ensemble (2015), and a collection of Christmas music on the Harmonia Mundi label (October 2014). The Choir continues to foster relationships with other distinguished performing ensembles and organisations both at home and abroad including the Crash Ensemble, Theatre of Voices, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Music Centre, and the Association of Irish Choirs. The Choir enjoys a unique relationship with Cork International Choral Festival where it is Choir-in-Residence on an annual basis. Principal funding for Chamber Choir Ireland comes from the Arts Council /an Chomhairle Ealaíon, with additional support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland National Lottery Fund and Dublin City Council. Paul Hillier

Artistic Director & Principal Conductor Paul Hillier is from Dorset in England and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His career has embraced singing, conducting, and writing about music. Earlier in his career he was founding director of the Hilliard Ensemble, and subsequently founded Theatre of Voices. He has taught in the USA at the University of California campuses at Santa Cruz and Davis, and from 19962003 was Director of the Early Music Institute at Indiana University. He was Principal Conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (2001-

2007) and has been Chief Conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen since 2003. His recordings, over a hundred CDs including seven solo recitals, have earned worldwide acclaim and won numerous prizes. His books about Arvo Pärt and Steve Reich, together with numerous anthologies of choral music, are published by Oxford University Press. In 2006 he was awarded an OBE for services to choral music. In 2007 he received the Order of the White Star of Estonia, and was awarded a Grammy for Best Choral Recording. In 2008 he took up the position of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the National Chamber Choir of Ireland, and in 2009 was invited to form the new Coro Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal. In 2010 he won a second Grammy (this time in the small ensemble category), for Theatre of Voices’ recording of David Lang’s ‘The Little Match Girl Passion’ (which also won a Pulitzer Prize), together with a selection of choral works by Lang, sung by Ars Nova Copenhagen.

VocaMe VocaMe is an ensemble made up of four renowned female vocalists from the field of early music, directed and accompanied by Michael Popp. The ensemble created a sensation with its first project, the world’s first recording of the hymns of Kassia, a ninth-century Byzantine female composer. These works will be coupled with the chants by well known German mystic of the 12th Century, Hildegard von Bingen. On the occasion of her canonization by the Catholic Church in 2012, Berlin Classics/Edel Records has released a sensational and exciting recording of Hildegard von Bingen’s beautiful chants. Indaver brings Waste-to-Energy to Ireland Indaver has built Irelands first Waste-to-Energy plant in Co. Meath. This Indaver facility will recover energy from residual municipal waste. It will provide 15MW energy to the national electricity grid. Indaverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposed Cork Waste-to-Energy Facility will process residual industrial and municipal waste generating over 80MW of steam, with the potential for exporting this energy as both electricity and heat to local industry from a Combined Heat and Power plant. This young, enigmatic choir bring their spirited tones to the evocative surroundings of one of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most historic buildings, The Masonic Hall. The building on Tuckey Street has served as the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Munster Freemasons since 1844, and its internal design has remained true to its origins in its layout and historic furnishings. Under the directorship of Anne Johansson, Gothenburg Youth Choir perform a wide repertoire, moving from classical styles, contemporary through to traditional Swedish songs. They regularly perform in local, national and international competitions and festivals to great acclaim.

One of the top international choirs bring their serene sounds to the beautiful setting of Triskel Christchurch.

Voiceworks Studio Group [Ireland] Director: Gemma Sugrue

Voiceworks Studio is a dedicated vocal tuition centre based in Cork city that welcomes singers of all ages, levels and styles. They specialise in training the individual singer and strive to always encourage artistry and creativity. Voiceworks are proud to present their vocal ensembles; The Super Singing Starz (age 5-7), Voiceworks Youth Choir (age 8-12), Vocalize (age 12-15) and the Adult Vocal Ensemble at one of the Cork International Choral Festival’s lunchtime events at Triskel Christchurch. They will perform a programme of popular, contemporary music including pieces by Karl Jenkins, Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit and music from The Lion King. The ensembles will be accompanied by a pianist and beat-boxer from the Voiceworks house and hopefully the audience too, who will be called upon to sing along! If it’s a feel-good, fun and family-friendly lunchtime concert you’re after be sure to catch the Voiceworks group in action!

Shandon Bells will once again host a dawn chorus this May Day, welcoming the first day of summer in our Shandon Sunrise event. At 06.05am, sunrise on Friday 1st May, the dawn will be met with a chorus of voices singing from the steps of the iconic Church of St. Anne, Shandon and followed by an ecumenical service. This unique performance has become a much loved annual event and marks the ancient celebration of the first day of summer. Those interested in attending are advised to arrive at 5.55am.

The stunning and historical St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral will come alive with an organ recital by James Taylor, Assistant Director of Music at the Cathedral. The organ has been recently restored and, with 88 speaking stops and 4500 pipes, it is the biggest in the Republic and the only one in the whole island of Ireland to be located in ‘a pit’. This fine example of historical restoration and new build can now be described as one of the truly great organs of Europe.

In addition to their Gala Concert in Cork on Friday 1st May (See page 17) VocaMe present another ethereal programme of music featuring the hymns of Kassia, a ninth-century Byzantine female composer. These works will be coupled with chants by well known German mystic of the 12th Century, Hildegard von Bingen. Canonised by the Catholic Church in 2012, VocaMe will also present several pieces by the late 14th Century poetess, Christine de Pizan, set to the music of the time. VocaMe has performed at dozens of prestigious international music festivals at home and abroad. The group will also perform a short informal programme on Sunday 3rd May at the Gallarus Oratory at 8am. This concert is brought to Féile na Bealtaine in conjunction with the Cork International Choral Festival and with the support of West Kerry’s Church of Ireland Community. Particular thanks are due to Eric Prestige.

The College of Clerks Choral in Youghal is an ancient institution, founded in 1464 by Thomas FitzGerald, Earl of Desmond. The College originally consisted of eight fellows and eight singing clerks - a choral foundation which was dissolved and reinstated a number of times over the centuries. The present choir represents the latest revival (2005) of the Clerks Choral directed by the much accomplished Ian Sexton. Although the Clerks Choral remains informally associated with the magnificent Collegiate Church in Youghal, the group is most active in venues throughout Munster at Divine Service (of all denominations), weddings and concerts. The Clerks Choral regularly features on RTÉ Radio 1 and Lyric FM. They have also performed in England and their rendition of Compline in St. Anne’s Church, Shandon, has become a regular feature of the Cork International Choral Festival. Compline is the last church service of the day; it is a contemplative office, with an emphasis on spiritual peace. 31

1910 Arthur Hill, a local Architect, won the competition to design the new Head Office. The building was originally a terrace of four separate premises.

1915 Opened in 1915, the protected building you see today stands as one of the most impressive Edwardian banking halls in Ireland with black and white checkered floor, marbled pillars and a glazed dome.

The 47th Seminar on New Choral Music

The Cork International Choral Festival has a longstanding commitment to foster awareness and appreciation of new choral music. With this in mind a seminar was initiated in 1962 as part of the Festival programme by the late Aloys Fleischmann, Professor of Music at University College Cork, which is central to this purpose. The Festival presents the 47th edition of the Seminar on New Choral Music as a joint collaboration with Chamber Choir Ireland, our choir in residence. To date, 134 works from 114 Irish and international composers have been commissioned. The Seminar on New Choral Music maintains its initial purpose of commissioning new works to provide a platform for, and to encourage the composition and performance of new choral music in Ireland, and to support their inclusion, and that of other new music, onto the regular repertoire of Irish choirs. In the last few years the Seminar has specifically promoted the commission of new works by Irish composers to develop a wider knowledge and understanding of Irish compositional life. Premiere performances are now integrated into a full concert programme by Chamber Choir Ireland. The present style of presentation makes the seminar very accessible to all, and assists in making current practice in the performance of new choral music accessible to the wider choral sector in Ireland. This year will see two new works featured and given their world premieres in Cork; Slouching Towards Bethlehem by composer Ian Wilson and Mother Goose’s Melodies by the winner of this year’s Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition, Eoghan Desmond. The Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition was initiated in 1972 in recognition of the creative life and work of Seán Ó Riada. It is a competition which invites the submission of new works from Irish composers in collaboration between the Cork International Choral Festival and Chamber Choir Ireland. The Festival continues to be overwhelmed by the number of entries received for the competition. We are delighted to welcome both composers to Cork to take part in the Seminar. Without the financial support of the Arts Council in making the commission of Ian Wilson possible, and 40

of the Ó Riada Family for their generous support of the Seán Ó Riada Competition, this seminar would not be in a position to continue to fulfil its important role in promoting the work of Irish composers and encouraging the composition of new choral music. I welcome Rhona Clarke, a highly regarded composer in her own right and a great friend of the Festival, as Seminar Chairperson, and thank Majella Hollywood, Chief Executive of the CCI, for her commitment to continue the involvement of Chamber Choir Ireland in this project. This year’s Seminar Programme will also feature a Performance Reading Session with Chamber Choir Ireland, of works by Kevin Corcoran and Donal Sarsfield, selected by the Seán Ó Riada Assessment Panel. Finally, I would direct your attention to the full collection of Seminar scores now housed in the Cork City Music Library which are available for consultation. General information on the Seminar, including digitised pages of scores, is now also available for perusal on the Library website. Education New Joint Festival and Chamber Choir Ireland Commission 2015 Slouching towards Bethlehem is a two-movement work, each movement a setting of one of W.B. Yeats’ so-called ‘Apocalyptic’ poems, which were inspired by sources as various as Theosophy and the writings of William Blake. Some of these poems, like He mourns for the change…, have their roots in mythology - Irish, Christian, English - and famous ‘journey’ legends such as those of Arthur and Oisín. Others such as The Second Coming, written just after the First World War, have clear resonances with what was happening socially and politically at the time. The language of these poems is by turns dark, pessimistic and strange, evoking unsettling, even nightmarish scenes. The principal attraction of these poems for me lies as much in the language as the subject matter, although together those elements create very striking imagery which I was excited to set to music. I hoped that these wild and vivid images would lead me towards music which could somehow reflect the drama and awe with which Yeats imbues his visions. Ian Wilson was born in Belfast in 1964 and obtained the first DPhil in composition to be awarded by the University of Ulster which, in 1993, commissioned his orchestral work Rise in celebration of the tenth anniversary of its music has been performed and continents at venues such as New Hall, London’s Royal Albert and Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw and

Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Musikverein, LA’s Zipper Hall and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and at festivals such as the BBC Proms, the Venice Biennale, the ISCM World Music Days, the Brighton, Cheltenham, Spitalfields and Bath Festivals and the Ultima Festival in Oslo, where Running, Thinking, Finding for orchestra received the composition prize in 1991. He has written approximately 130 pieces including two chamber operas, concertos for organ, cello, alto saxophone (two), violin (three), piano (three) and marimba, orchestral pieces, 13 string quartets and many other chamber, vocal and multi-media works. In 1992 he was awarded the Macaulay Fellowship administered by the Arts Council of Ireland, and in 1998 he was elected to Aosdána, Ireland’s Statesponsored body of creative artists. From 2000 to 2003 he was AHRB Research Fellow in Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Ulster and from 2009 to 2010 is An Foras Feasa post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Dundalk Institute of Technology. From 2003-2011 he was director of the Sligo New Music Festival, from 2006-2009 he was Composerin-Association with California’s Camerata Pacifica ensemble and from 2010-2013 is Associate Composer with the Ulster Orchestra. His music is published by Ricordi London and Universal Edition.

Rhona Clarke Rhona Clarke was born in Dublin. She studied music at University College, Dublin, and completed a Ph.D. at Queen’s University, Belfast. She is a lecturer in music at St Patrick’s College, Dublin City University. Her output includes choral, chamber, orchestral and electronic works. She has received commissions from RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the Cork International Choral Festival, Concorde, Music Network and the National Concert Hall, among others. Her work has been performed and broadcast throughout Ireland and worldwide. Recent works include SHIFT for orchestra (2013), which received its premiere in the Horizons series at the National Concert Hall, performed by The RTÉNSO conducted by Gavin Maloney, and a newly commissioned work in collaboration with visual artist Marie Hanlon for Concorde, performed at the RHA Gallery, Dublin. From July- September 2014 her work featured alongside Hanlon’s in a two-person exhibition at Draoícht Arts Centre. Rhona Clarke is a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s state-sponsored academy of creative artists.

The Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition was initiated in 1972 in recognition of the creative life and work of Seán Ó Riada. In its revised format it is a composition competition which invites submissions from composers, born or resident in Ireland, and is a collaboration between the Cork International Choral Festival and Choir in Residence, Chamber Choir Ireland. Assessment takes place under pseudonym. The members of this year’s assessment panel were Rhona Clarke (Seminar Chairperson), Ian Wilson (commissioned composer 2015), and Paul Hillier (Artistic Director and Conductor, Chamber Choir Ireland).

Composition Competition

The winning composition becomes a featured work at the Seminar on New Choral Music, held annually as part of the Festival. The work receives its premiere performance at the Gala Concert given by Chamber Choir Ireland and conducted by Paul Hillier on Friday 1st May 2015. The winning composer also attends the Festival and plays an active part in the Friday Seminar session, as well as the Performance Reading Sessions of highly recommended works on the following day. The winning composer is awarded the Seán Ó Riada Trophy, and a prize of €750 euro, donated by the Ó Riada Family. Previous winners include well-known names such as Solfa Carlile Rhona Clarke, Patrick Connolly, Frank Corcoran, Séamas de Barra, Michael Holohan, Marian Ingoldsby, Simon MacHale, Michael McGlynn, Kevin O’Connell, and last year’s winner, Donal Mac Erlaine. The Festival would like to extend its congratulations to this year’s winner Eoghan Desmond for his winning composition Mother Goose’s Melodies.

“Mother Goose’s Melodies is a compilation of 5 nursery rhymes and 1 clapping rhyme from my childhood. The piece starts with a cockerel fanfare, as though the sun is rising. There follows a slightly boisterous telling of a story about the careless loss of a shoe and a fiddling stick involving some rather superficial word painting on the word ‘fiddling stick’. Then we progress to the story of Dr Foster, as told by the sopranos, altos and basses, while the tenors remain conspicuously silent. As the fugue is reaching its stretto, the tenors (representing Dr Foster) burst onto the scene with a cry of distress, as the poor doctor ‘steps in a puddle right up to his middle.’ This is followed by yet more superficial word painting on the opening line of Goosey Goosey Gander: the wandering of the titular bird is represented by the plainsong mode ‘Tonus Peregrinus’. Following a short overture, the altos and basses trigger some familiar material: it is none other than the longawaited stretto from ‘Dr Foster’s Fugue’, indicating that it was that gentlemen that was found ‘in my lady’s chamber.’ Next, the upper voices sing a re-harmonised setting of Orlando Gibbons ‘Song 13’, to the rhyme ‘Bobby Shafto’, the hopeful words of a young woman left behind by her sailor love. The tenors and basses, knowing, sing ‘A Sailor Went to Sea’ to a descending motif, representing Shafto’s descent to the depths. The 3rd verse is my own invention, to bring the story to a complete close. The piece ends

Eoghan Desmond is a Dublinbased composer, conductor and bass-baritone. He began to sing at the age of 9, when he joined St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral Choir under Colin Nicholls, who has been a major influence as a musician generally and a composer specifically. He made his solo debut with East Cork Choral Society as the ‘Youth’ in Mendelssohn’s Elijah in 2003. Since moving to Dublin to study Music in Trinity College, Dublin, he has been given the opportunity to expand his solo repertoire by, among others, Dublin University Choral Society, with whom he has performed Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, and a concert of Vaughan Williams’ music, including Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Hodie, and the Irish premiere of WillowWood, a cantata for Baritone. He has also performed Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Haydn’s Creation, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. He has premièred David Lawrence’s song cycles, Nonsense Songs of Edward Lear and He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven, composed especially for him. Next, he hopes to be the second person ever to perform Sorabji’s epic Trois Poémes de Gulistan de Sa’di, last performed in 1988. He frequents Dorset Opera as a chorus mentor, and his voice is to be heard on the awardwinning soundtrack of Diablo III. Eoghan holds a BA in Music and an MPhil in Composition, both from TCD, where he studied under Dr. Evangelia Rigaki, Dr. Matthew Barnson and Dr. Donnacha Dennehy. An active member of the Irish Composers Collective, his music has been widely performed in Ireland, by groups such as Chamber Choir Ireland, Ensemble Avalon and the RTE ConTempo String Quartet, and is more recently in demand in the UK, the US and Australia. Eoghan has also been musical director of both the Campanile Consort and the Node Ensemble the only person in the history of Trinity’s music department to do so. He is the founder of the female-voices choir Dulciana, who recently made their performing debut, and later this year will be showcasing Irish female composing talent, in what will hopefully be the first in a series of such showcases. He is currently Lay Vicar of the Prebend of Newcastle in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, principal guest conductor of Téada String Orchestra, and has recently been made assistant Musical Director of Dún Laoghaire Choral Society. The winning piece will be premiered at Chamber Choir Ireland’s Gala Concert on Friday 1st May at 7.30pm in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral. See page 13 for more details. The work will also be discussed and analysed in the 47th Seminar on New Choral Music on Friday 1st May at 2pm along with being part of the Seán Ó Riada Performance Reading Sessions on Saturday 2nd May at 10am in the Stack Theatre at Cork School of Music. Are there prominent voices in your choir? Are their voices you never hear? Do each of the voice lines blend as if they were one voice? If you answered Yes, Yes and No to these three questions then it is highly likely that your choir would benefit from a technique known as Choir Voicing. Not to be confused with the classification of voices as Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass, the technique known as Choir Voicing was created to assist in generating the optimal blend of the singers in any given ensemble. One of the country’s leading musicians, conductor David Brophy, has said of this technique “Having attended Kevin O’Carroll’s absorbing presentation I’m fully convinced that all choirs should investigate the potential benefits of utilising this subtle and mysterious technique - they will be surprised at the results!” The effect of the technique has been acclaimed as magical, special and transforming. Kevin has been referred to as ‘The Choir Whisperer” and the Voicing technique has been described as voodoo for choirs! Whether you work with a large amateur group of 120 or an 8 member professional choral ensemble, the technique is equally effective.

School teaches us to do many things. Unfortunately, we are rarely taught to consider how we are while we are doing them. What if how you do is as important as what you do, in terms of freedom, ease and efficiency? What would your singing or your conducting be like if you learned to use just as much effort as you needed for the task, and no more? This informative Introductory Lecture/ Demonstration will introduce you to the Interactive Teaching Method (ITM) approach to the Alexander Technique. You will learn some key concepts that you can apply immediately, to experience improved mental and physical performance, enhancing co-ordination and ease in everyday tasks, as well as in more specialised activities, such as music, dance or sport. By learning more about ourselves and the principles that govern all movement behaviour, we can greatly improve the quality of our performance and greatly enhance the quality of our lives in general. It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it!

The Choir Voicing workshop is a one hour presentation held in an entertaining and collaborative atmosphere where either volunteers or a guest choir are used to demonstrate the technique and explain how it works. No choir member sings alone and all that is required is for choir members to change places! Choir Voicing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve the overall sound of your choir. 43

The Composers in the Classroom scheme is an initiative which brings professional composers and musicians, quite literally, into the classroom as part of a special curriculum devised for transition year music students and their teachers. Initiated in 1998 by the Cork International Choral Festival and Arts Officers of Cork City and Cork County Councils, the scheme offers music students and their teachers the opportunity to work with professional composers throughout the school year. The scheme has been highly successful in encouraging and assisting students, many with little or no musical training, in their musical creativity and experimentation. Students are required to listen to a wide range of music, analysing and discussing various elements. For the teacher, the residency provides an opportunity to work alongside a professional composer, discussing and developing approaches to creative composition in the classroom. The residency culminates in a seminar held as part of the Cork International Choral Festival, where students get the chance to perform their compositions and listen to the work of other schools in the scheme.

With the ambition of ensuring everybody gets the opportunity to sing in the Festival, we invite you to come and take part in The Big Sing 2015. The Big Sing has, since its inception in 2011, been a huge success with a year on year increase in the number of people turning out to each, making each of them the largest choirs ever to have sung at the Choral Festival! The Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) sponsors this event that encourages group singing. Singing with others can bring people together in a unique way and provides an unbeaten feelgood factor! This year we hope to make The Big Sing even bigger and better, and invite you to join us at City Hall and be part of the experience. You don’t need to be able to sing, it’s simply about lending your voice and experiencing first-hand the enjoyment and sense of community that lies at the heart of choral singing. In just 45 minutes, accomplished composer and conductor John O’ Brien will teach a well know choral work to the attending crowd, supported by some of our national choirs. The Big Sing is open to everyone and admission is free. Music and lyrics will be handed out on the day, and there’s no preparation necessary - just sing from, and for, the heart!

John O’brien Conductor John O’Brien is a conductor, director and composer based in Cork. He was a scholarship student at the Schola Cantorum, St. Finian’s College, Mullingar. He then completed a first honours Bachelor of Music degree, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Conducting at the Cork School of Music. For many years, John also attended the Canford Summer School for Conducting with George Hurst . Recent work includes: directing and musical direction of the acclaimed Faust - Everyman Theatre, directing and musical direction of Der Vampyr - Everyman Theatre, directing and musical direction Kiss of the Spider Woman - Half Moon/Cork Opera House; Orpheus - Everyman Theatre; musical direction and arranging Maria de Buenos Aires - Cork Opera House; musical direction Spindle - Big House Festival; conducting, co-directing and arranging Pagliacci at the Everyman (winner Best Opera Production Irish Times Theatre Awards); directing and designing the set for the acclaimed production of Dido & Aeneas at Cork Opera House which toured across Ireland; directing the dance film Inner Landscapes, musical direction for the premieres of two modern operas Thamyrus and Time for Earthenware at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford; creating the Voice Effect choir which performed with the RTÉ Concert orchestra at the recent Steve Reich festival in Cork; and writing the music for the feature film Tree Keeper. Other projects include conducting and designing Sweeney Todd at the Everyman and Cork Opera House; a tour as conductor of contemporary Irish choral music with ArtLifeCulture to Pecs, Hungary and to the world EXPO in Shanghai, China; working as musical director and pianist on Side by Side by Sondheim at the Everyman; conducting West Side Story, directing and conducting Candide (both at Cork Opera House); The Magic Flute (Cork Opera House and regional tour); and completing an Irish national tour as director and pianist on The Nina in Me.

Artist: National Competitions Each year the Festival prides itself in commissioning an artist to create a set of unique awards for our National Competitions. Etain was born in Dublin and studied at Dun Laoighaire School of Art & Design which was followed by several years working in different studio potteries in the UK, the Channel Islands and Finland. In the early 80’s she moved to West Cork to set up her pottery studio with husband Jim Turner. From her lofted studio, overlooking the haw and fuchsia bound fields, Etain explores her love of colour and pattern in her ceramic wall dishes using rich glazes and lavish decorative techniques incorporating gold in a fresh and fluid manner. Etain draws and decorates straight onto the raw pot which is “raw” or “once-fired” missing out the usual biscuit

firing. She then paints on gold and other lustres (liquid metals) and the pieces are fired again to a lower temperature. Etain’s recent and expanding theme has been the landscape; rhythm of nature, patterns on a landscape shaped by the elements, the passage of time and the effects of man provide inspiration for her earthenware dishes. She says “Although living in a beautiful rural area in West Cork my work isn’t directly influenced by what I see outside my studio window… I work surrounded by reference points, old pots, drawings, books. When I start decorating I don’t always know what the next mark will be; I have to respond to each shape to try to capture some vitality and fluidity”. Etain’s ceramics have been purchased by the Dept of Foreign Affairs for presentations and for Collections such as The Ulster Museum, the Crafts Council of Ireland and the Fujita Museum in Japan; and have been selected for several international exhibitions; “European Ceramics” Rufford Art Centre England, in Zurich, Frankfurt, San Francisco and Philadelphia, USA. In 2013 some of her new brightly coloured earthenware wall dishes with added gold detail, were exhibited in The London Design Festival and Brussels. Etain won the 2014 Award for Outstanding Achievement at the Irish Ceramics Awards.

Artist: Fleischmann International Trophy As part of our commitment to supporting artists, the Cork International Choral Festival commissioned artists Liam Lavery and Eithne Ring in 2014 to create a bespoke Fleischmann International Trophy as a perpetual award following 20 years of unique works being produced for the competition by Liam Lavery. This perpetual trophy is inspired by a small extract from a hand written score by Aloys Fleischmann merging with the iconic “goldie fish” atop St. Anne’s, Shandon” along with other musical motifs and stylized vocalists using cast aluminium as the primary material combined with enamelled copper. Contemporary Irish artists Liam Lavery and Eithne Ring have been working and collaborating on art projects since 1988. Their work has developed from painting and small low-relief wall panels made of cast aluminium, through to large-scale public commissions using a variety of different materials; bronze, wood, copper, enamels, glass and stainless steel. Both Liam and Eithne have been engaged by the Festival over the years producing both National and International Awards since 1994.

nÓg. Mark currently holds the appointment of Director of the Defence Forces School of Music in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with responsibility for the administration, policy, planning, programming and musical direction of Ireland’s military bands.

Lorenzo Donati [Italy] Ralph Allwood MBE was Director of Music at Eton College for 26 years and is now a freelance conductor. He is the Director of the Eton Choral Courses and Conductor of the Rodolfus Choir. He is also a founder and conductor of Inner Voices, a conductor of the National Youth Choir of Wales and an adjudicator of the Llangollen Eisteddfod. He is Assistant Director of Music at Queens’ College, Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow of University College, Durham. He is Choral Advisor to Trinity College, Oxford and Wellington College. Ralph is also Director of Music at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich and a teacher at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and at Tiffin School. In 2012 he was awarded a Doctorate of Music by Aberdeen University.

Lorenzo Donati is a composer, conductor, and violinist, who has studied with some of the world’s most important musicians in Arezzo and Florence. He has performed at concerts with Vocale Vox Cordis, Hesperimenta Vocal Ensemble di Arezzo, and Vocalia Consort di Roma, winning numerous national and international awards in the process. In 2007 he won two first prizes at the Concorso Internazionale per Direttori di Coro “Mariele Ventre” di Bologna. His work has been published by many Italian publishing houses and performed by esteemed choirs from all over Europe. He teaches choral conducting at the Conservatory of Trento.

Mark Armstrong [Ireland] Mark Armstrong is one of Ireland’s most accomplished and versatile musicians. A love of choral music commenced at an early age as a boy chorister and developed through his years in Trinity College Dublin where he was invited to direct the College Singers, a sixteen voice choir and Musica Sacra, a choral group specialising in works of the high Baroque. Guest conducting engagements have included concert performances and recordings with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Opera Theatre Company, Irish Film Orchestra, RTÉ Chamber Choir, RTE Philharmonic Choir, National Chamber Choir, and RTÉ Cór na 64

Maria Gamborg Helbekkmo is professor emeritus at Bergen University College, where she once taught choir conducting, piano, and solo voice. Educated as a pianist, singer, and conductor, she has gained wide recognition as a musician and teacher, and is especially known for her work with the female choir Voci Nobili. Her determination, combined with her artistic abilities and her unique musical ambience, has helped turn Voci Nobili into a very highlyesteemed European choir with many honours to its name. In 2005 she won the Norwegian Choral Association’s annual prize with Voci Nobili, and in 2006 she was awarded H.M. The Kings Medal of Merit in Gold for her educational and artistic contribution to Norwegian music.

Biographies Soma Szabó [Hungary] Soma Szabó earned his international reputation as conductor of the Cantemus Mixed Choir and as artistic director of Banchieri Singers. These ensembles have gained great success at many international music festivals, and have undertaken concert tours across the world. He regularly leads workshops on choral conducting, Kodály-teaching, and renaissance concert singing, and is regularly invited to be among the jury at international choral competitions. In addition to his work as a conductor, he also teaches at the School of Art in Nyíregyháza and remains a member of the Banchieri Singers, a vocal sextet. Amongst his honours are the 1st Prize and Grand Prix at the International Choir Competition of Tolosa, Spain, and the Special Prize for the the Best Conductor at the International Choral Competition of Budapest.

Schools Adjudicators Dr. Orla Flanagan [Ireland] Dr. Orla Flanagan is Assistant Professor of Music at Trinity College in Dublin. She studied conducting with Prof. Péter Erdei at the Kodály Institute in Hungary and has participated in courses and masterclasses throughout Europe. In 2012 she was awarded a Doctorate of Music in Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Orla conducts the award-winning Mornington Singers, an adult choir based in Dublin. She was awarded the McCurtain & McSwiney Award to a conductor at the Cork Choral Festival’s

Fleischmann International Trophy Competition in 2014 and 2011 and in April 2009 was awarded a special prize for interpretation at the 10th International Choral Competition, Maribor, Slovenia. She frequently gives choral workshops and adjudicates at festivals throughout Ireland. In addition to her work with the Mornington Singers, Orla directs the UCD Philharmonic Choir. She has also appeared with professional choral ensembles: as conductor of Milltown Chamber Choir from 2006–2011, with EnsemBéal at the Béal Festival in November 2012 and as a frequent guest conductor with Chamber Choir Ireland, with whom she performed at the White House for Barack Obama in 2011.

Deirdre Moynihan [Ireland] As a soprano soloist Deirdre Moynihan performs with many operatic, orchestral, choral and chamber music groups both in Ireland and on the International stage. Her debut CD of Vivaldi Cantatas was released in 2014 to widespread critical acclaim. International Record Review described her voice as being “unfailingly beautiful in tone”, Music Web International wrote “a beautiful voice, which is perfectly suited to baroque music” and The Sunday Business Post referred to her “superb vocal clarity”. Deirdre has been a soloist with, amongst others, the R.T.É Concert Orchestra, R.T.É National Symphony Orchestra, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra. Radio broadcasts include Lyric FM, RTE Radio 1 and BBC Radio Ulster. She was a former member of and soloist with the National Chamber Choir of Ireland and has worked as the soprano coach for The Irish Youth Choir. The Chamber Choir of the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music was formed in Bydgoszcz in 1986 when conductor Janusz Stanecki brought students from a variety of different musical fields together to sing choral music. Since then, the choir has grown exponentially, and now works with the philharmonic orchestras of Bydgoszcz, Gdansk, Torun, and Gorzow Wielkopolski. With a rich repertoire of Polish and European music from the Middle Ages to the present, the choir has toured extensively, appearing at International Choral Festivals in Argentina and the United States in recent years.

The Chanterelles began singing together in 2009. Based in Leicestershire, but with singers from all over the UK, the Chanterelles derive much satisfaction from singing together at such a high standard with their professionalism and proficiency evident in their music. Directed by Dr. Shirley Court, they boast a diverse repertoire which spans genres showcasing their rich sound. Their recent achievements include winning the women’s choirs section at the Isle of Man Festival of Choirs 2013, the North Wales Choral Festival in 2011, and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 2010. The choir was also named ‘most entertaining choir’ at the final of the Isle of Man Festival of Choirs.

Achievements include: Grand Prix in the Polish Choir Tournament, Legnica Cantat (2006); the Peace Trophy at the 53rd Cork International Choral Festival (2007); five medals in the International Festival/ Competition Singing World in St. Petersberg, Russia (2012), and 4thplace in the International Choral Competition in Spittal, Austria (2014). Biographies Foerster Female Chamber Choir [Czech Republic] Conductor: Jaroslav Brych

The Foerster Female Chamber Choir was founded in Prague in 1975 and quickly came to be regarded as one of the Czech Republic’s leading choirs. Over the last few decades the choir has amassed a great number of prizes, winning honours at festivals in Arezzo, Cork, Debrecen, Jihlava, and Prague, along with claiming outright victories at competitions in Klaipeda (2003), Vienna (2006), Venice (2008), and Rimini (2012). The choir pays special attention to contemporary music and has given many Czech composers their premiere performances, though its repertoire is wide, ranging from Renaissance polyphony to music of the 20th century. Current director Jaroslav Brych studied conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Václav Neumann and now works as a pedagogue there, the Faculty of Pedagogics at Charles University, and the Conservatoire of Pardubice. Gothenburg Youth Choir [Sweden] Conductor: Anne Johansson Gothenburg Youth Choir was formed in 2006 and now consists of roughly 40 members. Nearly all of its members are past pupils of the Brunnsbo School 68

in Gothenburg, a state school with special music classes, who have continued singing together after graduation. Not only does the choir participate in several concerts a year in Sweden, it also performs internationally on a frequent basis, having in recent years taken part in festivals in Prague, Aarhus, Cork, Philadelphia, and New York. The choir has also produced two CDs; 2011’s Come Along, and 2013’s Caroling Christmas. Reading Phoenix Choir [United Kingdom] Conductor: David Crown

Reading Phoenix Choir was established in 1969 by founding musical director Norman Morris and quickly became recognised as one of the top amateur choirs in the United Kingdom. The choir gives up to twenty concerts a year and raises thousands for charity. Performing a wide variety of music, both sacred and secular, from early 16th century to present day, the choir participates regularly in national and international competitions, broadcast recordings, and tours. The choir’s current Musical Director, David Crown, is Director of Music at Somerville College, Oxford. Sibelius Upper Secondary School Chamber Choir is a choir that regards laughter and love of music as its constitutive elements. Counted among the most significant of Finnish youth choirs, it currently consists of 50 singers, all of whom study in the school and play a variety of instruments. The choir is conducted by Reijo Aittakumpu and constitutes a central element in the arts-based curriculum and practice of Sibelius Upper Secondary School. Over recent years the choir has produced several recordings and has also toured in countries including Germany, Russia, the U.S.A., Japan, and Argentina. In 2001 it was awarded the title of Youth Choir of the Year by Finnish National Broadcasting Company.

The Chamber Choir of Tallinn University was formed in 1997 under the guidance of Merike Aarma. The choristers are students and University alumni from over ten different academic departments. The repertoire varies from Renaissance music to contemporary masterpieces; the work of Veljo Tormis is a significant part of the choir’s repertoire and they have performed his pieces while successfully representing Estonia in various competitions and festivals: the VIII International Choir Competition “Europe and its Songs” in Barcelona, 2006, Malta in 2007, in the “World Choir Championships 2009” in Korea, the XI Estonian Chamber Choir Festival in 2010 (Grand Prix and special awards) and in Rimini in 2011. Ardú are a new and unique a cappella choral ensemble comprising of five and six singers. Our singers are from various parts of Ireland and the UK all of whom have roots in traditional choral singing. Ardú specialise in arranging well known popular music for five voices, exploring the use of the voice as an instrument with percussive sounds as well as melody and harmony. Ardú launched their debut EP, ‘Only You/Back, in Time’ at the City of Derry International Choral Festival in October 2014. This five track album features well known songs from artists such as Queen and Coldplay, all arranged to suit our unique sound. 1998 when half a dozen people attended a series of Bulgarian folk song workshops in Blackburn Museum. This small group suffered severe withdrawal symptoms at the end of the six week session, and so embarked on a search for funding to start a choir that could continue to explore unaccompanied harmony singing. (Hons) - has directed Blackburn’s People’s Choir on a choral journey that has seen the group grow into a choir of 100 singers performing 20 concerts a year raising thousands of pounds for charity whilst developing the choirs technique and repertoire. The choir has participated at the Krokstand Man Must Dance Festival in Sweden in 2006 and 2008, visited Northern Cyprus in 2009 and 2011, and won trophies at the Isle of Man festival of Choirs in 2011 and 2013. Their repertoire is wide, with songs from a range of places and times African and world music, folk, gospel, pop, sacred, classical and contemporary, while also keeping a focus on Estonian choral music. In 2006 the choir was awarded the Choir Of The Year prize by the Estonian Female Choir Association. WHEN & WHERE:

Húsakórið is a choir of Faroe Islanders residing in Copenhagen that was founded in 1971. The choir has an invaluable importance to the local Faroese community and to everyone that appreciates the great Nordic and Faroese music traditions. Capturing in their sound the rough and windy climate of the Faroe Islands, there is a sense of drama in their music, scored with lyrics by the greatest Faroese poets. In 2012 Húsakórið had the honour of performing for the Danish Queen on the 40th anniversary of her coronation. Since January 2012 Húsakórið has been conducted by the talented Ms Tóra Vestergaard. Tóra has a masters degree in music pedagogy and

Ier en Gunter is based in the Belgian coast town of Ostend which bears the proud title of ‘Stad aan zee’. The ‘Ier’ in the name, which is Dutch for both ‘here’ and ‘Irishman’, is a reference to founding member Joe Mullen, who was originally from Cobh, Co. Cork. Conducted by Mr. Dirk Ooms, it is a mixed four voice amateur choir with a broad repertoire consisting of Irish and English folksongs, world music, Chanson, Pop, Jazz, Renaissance, and Baroque pieces. Dirk Ooms is a pianist and teacher at the Ostend Music Conservatory. The choir is also accompanied on guitar by Patrick Gyselen. Jordan Valley Choir [Israel] Conductor: Ira Kalechman

Jordan Valley Choir was founded 32 years ago in the beautiful Jordan Valley next to the Sea of Galilee. The choir is conducted by Mrs. Ira Kalechman and consists of 35 singers that offer a broad range of vocal styles. With a repertoire containing Israeli songs (old and new), Jewish Liturgical Music, folk songs, and classical, the choir has performed on TV shows, radio stations, official ceremonies, and has participated in choral festivals in Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, and Russia. It won a gold medal in the International Choir Festival “Shirat Hayamim” in Natania, Israel. The choir is accompanied by pianist Mrs. Marina Sandrovich.

UNTAK is a mixed choir and was established in 1991. The choir consists of both a show/cabaret group and a choir based in the two small neighboring communities of Nesseby and Tana in Finnmark, a county in Arctic Norway. The choir is currently made up of 30 singers from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Its repertoire reflects the diversity of cultures in its surrounding regions, where music from the indigenous Sámi tradition is of great importance. Conducted by Dan Broch, the choir’s profane and ecclesiastical repertoire consists primarily of Norwegian, Sámi, Finnish, Swedish and Russian music.

Plough and the Stars, Cassie in Cass Maguire, and Man of La Mancha. She has directed such works as Battle of the Sexes, Through the Wire, and the national premiere of Fame, plus several pantomimes. Catherine is part of an excellent staff in the Academy. CADA’s performance in the Choral Festival involves pupils, teachers and parents.

The Army No. 2 Band was formed in April 1925 at Beggars Bush Barracks, Dublin. It was posted to Cork the following year, where it is currently stationed at Collins Barracks. The numerical titles of all bands, with the exception of the Army No.1 Band, were later changed to territorial styles; thus the Army No.2 Band became The Band of the Southern Command. Its current title, The Band of 1 Brigade, dates from a reorganisation of the Defence Forces in 1997. In addition to its military commitments, the band plays a major part in the musical and cultural life of the southern region of the country. It regularly appears at important events such as the Cork International Choral Festival and its concert performances at venues such as City Hall, Cork, have won an enthusiastic following. The band’s Schools Concert programme is a much-appreciated part of the Defence Forces contribution to the community. In recent years performances abroad have become a feature of the band’s schedule and it has performed to acclaim at events such as The International Festival of Military Music at Saumur, France, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Toronto, Canada.

Ceoltóirí Mhúscraí is a group of highly talented young Irish traditional musicians, singers and dancers based in Maria Immaculata Community College, Dunmanway and Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co. Cork. The group are actively involved in the musical and social development of the community locally and also perform at many local and national events. Performances include an extensive and varied repertoire of Slow Airs, Planxtys and Dance Tunes, enhanced by individual and group dancing and traditional singing, both in Irish and English.

Sights Cork City Gaol A big part of Cork’s heritage, Cork City Gaol is located 2km from Patrick’s Street. While the magnificent castle-like building is now a major and unique visitor attraction, this Gaol once housed 19th century prisoners. Visitors get a fascinating insight into day-to-day prison life at a time when high walls ensured no escape and denied law abiding citizens the opportunity to see one of the finest examples of architectural heritage. Stepping inside, visitors are taken back in time to the 19th century. Wandering through the wings of the Gaol, the cells are furnished with amazingly life-like wax figures; original graffiti on cell walls tell the innermost feelings of some inmates; while a very spectacular audio visual tells the social history and contrasting lifestyles of 19th Co. Cork and why some people turned to crime, and some ended up in Australia. This exhibition fascinates visitors of all ages and nationalities and is available in up to 13 languages. West Cork Model Railway Village A visit to the award winning West Cork Model Railway Village is a treat for all the family. On the Inchydoney road overlooking Clonakilty bay, the Model Village is a fully scaled replica of the towns that sprang up along the West Cork Railway in the 1940’s. The village tells the story of how people lived and worked in days gone by giving both children and adults a love and understanding of his or her local history. Activities at the model village include a 30 minute audio tour on the Choo Choo Road Train around Clonakilty and an interpretative centre featuring film footage of the railway and original artefacts on display.
