RIVER LIFE, CITY LIFE

Kok River was once the most significant element for City of Chiangrai, as for human and also nature. Nowsdays, urbanization growth put river’s functions in to second string position which cause the separation of the river and the city. The project’s purposal is to reconnect life of the city and nature that is the priority of all. The priority to connect human and nature can be projected as “Terrace to Nature”, the ability to connect the urban dynamics such as daily life activities or city festivals, and nature dynamics such as river tide or annual blossom. To link these two together lead to design strategies of the area which are the following: • Proper Access • Resilience River Front Edge • Ecosystem & Riparian • Hosting City Events • Enhancing Site Characters • Promoting Chiangrai’s Culture

This changing of shadows concept is applied to site planning. Studying building shade-shadow to help defining each part of landscape what’s its true potential. These’re some example of activities that can be perform in each area near the buildings due to timing it normally happened in a day. There’re more activities that probably hapened, which can share spaces to one another.

Future Development Plan

2004 2009 2013 City Grows Issue: Pakkret district, Nonthaburi, has growing from Bangkok in consideration rate. White spots is the city spreading, according to maps, the district grows faster and faster each year. So that’s one of the university concern to prepare of this change. By 2020, people willl wish for green public space, so the university could be the one that answer to this issue.

Future Expansion Buildings

- Minimize building foot prints - Control energy usage, combining green energy to systems - Locating new buildings nearest to road, for more convenience and reduce pollutions - Form space between these building for public usage. - Integrated trees and green space in every parts of the site

Recreation zone in student residential area: Students can enjoy water and variety of spaces. Everyone can see each other so that it can start good relationships to each other.

Preservation Trees Line

- Act as the line which seperate between new developing area and existing university public green zone - These trees are resticted species that need special consideration and allowence to take down. - These trees mostly grow in forrest so they provide humidity and refreshment to site

Trees in Futute Expansion Area

- Planting for eleviate the richness of nature in site - Some area can be recreation area that conncect the public green space - These trees are economical value species which authorized by government’s support

From student recreation area: They can see Convention Hall to remind them to be awaken and thurst to creativities.

CONNECTING CITY

Design Proposal, The design envisions reserving a certain amount of plots of agricultural land falling in the flood plains and abutting the major canal networks to create a continuous network of interconnected agricultural areas. This network will help in integrating the land and the hydrological dynamics in this region. The hydrological network occupies around 6 percent of the total land region, the proposal intends to tap on this existing natural feature and eventually contribute to an increase in the overall permeable area. With the rapid urbanization this strategy would safeguard the waterways from becoming urban sewers and also help in retaining the practice of agriculture from becoming obsolete.

Background: Historically, Nonthaburi has been predominantly famous for its fruit orchards which flourished given the fertility of the soil and the extensive networks of canals. A dependable source of irrigation and to date agri-

cultural landscapes are an integral part of the overall suburban fabric of Nonthaburi. However, rapid urbanization is soon going to change this picture; the agricultural land has already started giving way to residential and commercial schemes which are mushrooming around the new transportation corridors. This urbanization one can easily foresee will lead to the demise of agriculture in this region over the years and in effect disrupt the overall hydrological cycle around the region, because of the reduction in the permeable land.

Design Strategy: The design shows the projection of urbanization over a

period of twenty years and the proposed agricultural network interspersed with the urban areas. Developing edible streetscapes, integrating recreation and food production in a way that the open spaces (park) concept with agriculture. Some of the specific strategies that the design suggests is all open spaces can be productive, utilizing these productive green areas as water retention areas during floods and water catchment areas during dry seasons and a means to direct water out of Nonthaburi during extensive floods.
