SİNEM MERPEZ I have graduated from the Architecture Department Of İzmir Institute Of Technology. Besides the technical education that i received in university, I have gained some skills on critical thinking and multidisciplinary perspective. Also the approaches in architectural thinking have different levels of challenges and have always excited me. Architecture has been a profession that I study fondly because I like to produce different solutions for design problems and create alternatives. I have enthusiasm for sustainable architecture and like to follow the development of design methods and tools in the context of sustainability. In addition to all this, experiencing the architecture that I learned in theory and that it reaches users by practicing in the field helped me to understand architecture in a wider context.

Shopping, commerce and transportation are major services of an urban environment. Often these services contribute together to the richness of urban life. When the built environment provides adequate spatial alternatives to shopping, commerce and transportation, the interactions between people increases and other social amenities and services accumulate around them.

The selected site is in Şirinyer, which functions as an urban hub in Buca, and houses a major retail Store, a Street market open twice a week, a bus transfer near the Şirinyer İzban Station, in addition to several other amenities such as sports facilities, a wedding hall, parks etc. Buca has an ancient history that brings up the cultural memory which is dated back to old times. The Byzantine Aqueduct, ruins of Roman fortress, Apollon Theatre, the Hippodrome, Ottoman railway and Levantine Houses had become the urban cultural assets. However, having significant urban texture in history, the marks are barely visible today.

Shopping, commerce and transportation areas meet high human density, while the park acts as a filtration against the dense urban fabric. The Urban Deck positions itself as a staple [backbone] between these two different spaces. Areas that contribute to the human experience, such as theatre, ateliers, art gallery, exhibition hall etc, are located on Urban Deck. Housing units, which is one of the existing structures, are placed in the end of commerce axis and away from the main road. B

While considering Söke River as a whole and aiming to unite two sides of the river, it is aimed to have different functions throughout the river and experience actively by the local people. Since an active use is projected around Söke River, it is aimed to pedestranize project area and slow down the traffic where pedestranize is not possible. By descending the ground level to the river level in some points, Söke River, which is the only water element in the city center, will make locals feel the water effect. It is aimed to achieve this effect by designing different areas along the river, where you can sit on the edge of the river and walk on the river.

The local people have an agricultural culture due to the geographical characteristics of region in Söke. The town, which cultivates its own farmers, also aims to be attractive city for students. By the green public spine that aims to create a social and environmental transformative effect in the region, we propose to give the city an agricultural identity by focusing on the river and to transform the city into a center that manages the agricultural activities of the region.

diagrams The aim of this project is to build a 50 sq. meter one-person hut for the watchman who is working in the ancient city. The project area is sited at the entrance of the village and has a dominating view of the village.

section A-A

The design aims to have minimum relationship between the ground and the hut by building the hut above the existing wall ruins. It is proposed that the ruins be restored and two main walls built on these restored ruins with use of local stones. The wall which is parallel to main road is designed as a barrier to main road that is in high use of tourists and the other wall has wide openings to the view of the village. The non-structural walls are sub components that helps to form areas. These areas has 3 functions of the hut which consists of sleeping area, dining area and living area.

The hut is perceived as a part of the reflected surroundings and the natural environment is accentuated through the hut.

KINDERGARTEN AS A PLAYGROUND karşıyaka,izmir

2016-2017

Karşıyaka is one of the densest district in İzmir. Besides being an active venue of commerce, culture and tourism, Karşıyaka also boasts an advanced urban culture of its own. The project site located in one of the most crowded area of Karşıyaka which has developed with rapid urbanization like other regions of Izmir. Designing a children's center in such area has inevitably brought about contradictions. Based on this contrast, the design aims to recreate natural playgrounds that are on the verge of extinction, while constructing studios that serve as a school for children.
