architect, designer, maker... I believe that sustainability is more than green and architecture goes beyond buildings. A building is a collection of activities in a certain location, responding to tangible cultural, social, economic and technological conditions, interacting with their environment, following the principles of ecology or biology, like a tree, which is able to rooting itself in a particular place, generating its own energy, interacting with the natural networks around it and creating complex ecosystems and landscapes together with other trees.

Pavilion for the FAB10 Symposium. Barcelona, July 2nd to 8th, 2014. Initial design by Margen-Lab, produced by IAAC and collaborative designed, build, and customized by the FabLab Network. The initial design proposes a distorted dymaxion map of the world, made out of 20 components, to be folded/composed creating a unique space. Each component is different and customizable, fabricated with CNC
machines and with local materials. I was involved designing the pattern on the skin. Each cross represents fablabs around the world. The variation of the cross size stems from the density of fablabs in that area. During construction of the pavilion, I prepared the stencils by laser cutting. And I also helped for the assembly of components.

[SW18] Measuring Social Welfare Spring 2014 Group Project | Self Sufficient Building Studio Instructors: Enric Ruiz Geli, Mireia Luzárraga, Maria Kupstova, Dori Sadan Team: Sinem Samanci, Mohamad Yassin, Raphael Teixeira Libonati, Rasha Sukkarieh, Rodolfo Parolin, Sofía Kcomt Villacorta Today, there are 19 countries with very high risk of social unrest according to a study by the Economist Intelligence unit.
and were drastically modifying the relations. We therefore considered them as the ingredients of the formula.
Is the top-down governance including the society in its policy formulation? We think not.
For our case study we used the district of Sant Adrià de Besòs, in Barcelona. 250 million euros have been spent between the years 2001-2010 on the area and yet no significant change has occurd and still the social welfare of Sant Adrià de Besòs is lower than the Barcelona average.
We understand that the global discussion must move beyond market incentives and governmental sanctions, codes and standards. In order to address the triple threat of economic crisis, energy security, and climate change, we must rethink human nature itself and redefine the meaning of the human journey. We began our research with gathering information about the condition of the society we live in and In order to find the relations and the common variables forming the society, we decided to measure social welfare with a formula. According to our research, the components: health, education, ecological footprint and employment had critical conditions in the society
We measured the social welfare with our formula and according to the results, the people’s needs, and based on the concept of disruptive innovation we implemented the SW18 PROGRAM. The program includes eighteen disruptive ideas that will eventually improve the social welfare index in the area. SW18 is activated and is the next disruptive program to retrofit Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Following the Bottom-up approach, we researched about the variable inputs that define the structure of the society and its problems. The idea was to create a grasshopper definition that receives live data, filters them through the formula in order to raise the social welfare index. The inputs are divided into three categories:
• • • •
The Input of the People The existing program that was initiated to retrofit the area The program we propose based on disruptive innovation.
[SW18] What if La Rambla is transformed into a wedding fiesta all the time of the year? What if the whole structure was lit whenever the level of decibels increases? The electricity to light the structure will be generated through dance floor that generates energy through pressure. Hence, the space is lit when it is charged with people’s energy. Eco-
logical Footprint index will drastically decrease by this activity as the structure is generating its own energy. Education will also be affected when considering this program asenhancing the sense of belonging. Transferring La Rambla into a wedding venue all year long will enhance the sense of identity of the district and encouraging civic belonging.

[wind_crow] Wind Energy Machine Fall 2013 Group Project | Introductory Design Studio Instructors: Javier Pe単a, Rodrigo Rubio, Oriol Carrasco and Stefanos Levidis Team: Sinem Samanci, Akanksha Rathee, Chung Kai Hsieh and Mardet Gebreyesus
This project explores the idea of capturing wind energy as observed in the movement of plants. Initially inspired by the lift wind energy created in birds or bird mimicking inventions like kites, it questions the idea of a turbine and searches for ways to hack into the natural oscillating mechanism of a plant for energy production. More than that, it looks into the idea of contributing to the production
cycle that defines Valldaura by inverting the energy directly into the crops. Wind energy is harvested through a plant mimicking machine that gives the energy to growing plants. For this we have done a series of experiments that suggest a different perspective on the production and use of energy. We were interested an application of electricity outside the concept of human habitat.

[catalan_brick] BRICK WORKS THIN-TILE VAULT Spring 2014 Workshop | Practise Fabrication Seminar Instructors: Marta Domenech, David Lopez, Mariana Palumbo
It is an intensive, 2 week-long workshop where I was part of a team of 27 students designed and constructed a thin-tile vault in forest campus in Valldaura IAAC, in collaboration with Map13 Architects: Marta Domenech, David Lopez, Mariana Palumbo, and BLOCK Research Group, ETH Zurich. Advanced digital tools (Rhinovault) along with traditional century-old Catalan masonry techniques were deployed in the process.
We re-engineered, computed, and eventually constructed a vault in the forest. Maximum creativity in the design of a piece with limited means; handling of cement mortar and plaster, with its peculiarities, setting speed, etc. and planning and construction phases by material and time is achieved.

“Light Sensitive Pattern is a project developed for Physical Computing Seminar at IAAC. An Arduino based system, responds to light source by using a light sensor as an input. Depending on the light intensity/time of the day, the system controls the amount of
sun light coming through into interior space. The materiality and organisation of all elements allow for visual, harmonious movement to be achieved.

[dynamic_star] Rapid Prototyping / 3d Printing Fall 2013 Group Project | Digital Fabrication Seminar Instructors: Edouard Cabay, Alexandre Dubor, Anastasia Pistofidou, Robert Garita and Chirag Rangholia Team: Sinem Samanci, Asif Rahman and Irina Shaklova
The primary goal was to discover 3d printing technology by producing 3d printed pieces on the machines available in the IAAC. It is earnt to model, prepare, export and check the file to be fed to the machine and operating the 3d printers. Explore the design opportunities arising from the potential and limitations of the technology. The assignment is to create a dynamic assembly of rods linked together by 3d printed joinery pieces. This assembly should have taken advantage of the elastic nature of the tubes in order to form two geometrical moments as different as possible from each other’s. Limitation of the design is to use a maximum of 10 rods, 1 m long, 2 mm diameter, a 10 mm thick black mdf board of 600*600mm and a series of 3d printed joints (designed by ourselves) within a maximum bounding box of 100mm*50mm*50mm. Considering all these
limitations, we started to test with rods, to use the opportunity of its flexibility. Our dynamic assembly is formed by joining at least three rods oriented on non-Cartesian axes. The elements are crossing but not intersecting. This ultimately created a self supported free standing and flexible structure with the help of crossing components. In order to hold clusters we designed three different 3d printed joints and attached them to the board. We used four of one-hole joints and three-hole joints and a fourhole joint. Using the material flexibility helped us to use less material for 3d printing and time.

[spli_angulation] CNC Milling Fall 2013 Group Project | Digital Fabrication Seminar Instructors: Edouard Cabay, Alexandre Dubor, Anastasia Pistofidou, Chirag Rangholia and Shashank Shrivastva Team: Sinem Samanci, Elena Mitrofanova and Robert Douglas McKaye
Our intention with this experiment was to create a hexagonal grid within the tile boundaries which could be universally distorted to create topography or other dynamic surfaces for de-centralized irrigation to the edges. The channels for water flow are derived from this grid using a simple script and are embedded within an undulating surface so as to appear and disappear with the changing elevation. Through triangulation, we were able to manipulate the vertices of the grid independently in order to provide pathways for the flow of water, and allocate the zones for collecting and dispersing the water to neighboring tiles. Using the Delaunay triangulation as
a springboard for scripting, we positioned outside vertices of the geometry at the prescribed exits points for the water flow. The interior of the triangulation was populated randomly, but with an emphasis on creating a decentralized pattern. We then deconstructed the mesh in order to prescribe the simple rule that additional curves should be introduced for each side of every triangle, and that their geometries should be defined using the end points of each side and the centroid of the triangle. Hiding the original triangulation, we further disguised the underlying hexagonal grid and established the basis for our water flow.

Urban Academy in Izmir Spring 2011 Individual | Architectural Design V Instructors: Ebru Yılmaz You_twit_face is the formal and spatial expression of 21st century man’s daily habits, his lifestyle and his way of sharing knowledge. It is aimed to accomodate diverse activities in a building for educational, cultural, and commercial activities as a place of communication and sharing by designing a series of spaces that breaks the hierarchy in the university and allows interaction with every plane of knowledge. Who is the 21st century man? What is his lifestyle and daily habits? What is the relation between those habits and knowledge? “All the knowledge is in the connections.” CONNECTIVISM Connectivism is a theory of learning based on the premise that knowledge exists in the world rather than in the head of an individual. Connectivism regards knowledge as existing within systems
which are accessed through people participating in activities. It proposes that people learn through contact. It is “a learning theory for the digital age”, the emphasis it gives to how technology affects how people live, how they communicate and how they learn. In this context it is aimed to find a collective solution for two different urban problems in the city of Izmir. The first problem concerns a noticeable change in the occupant profile of the center city. Academia has been expelled from the urban context to the outskirts of Izmir. To overcome this exclusive distance from urban life, the universities in Izmir are insistently looking for an urban academy where they can present their works to the society and other institutions in the city. The second problem is inadequate car parking places. As a result of this problematic lack of parking, most of the pedestrian walkways and public parks allover the city are uncomfortably occupied by cars.

“If the look bestowed by things is rather soft, grave, and passive, then it is the look of water. An examination of the imagination leads us to this paradox: in the imagination of universalized vision, water plays an unexpected role. The true eye of the earth is water. In our eyes it is water that dreams. In our eyes it is water that dreams.” Bachelard, Gaston. Water and Dreams
The concept stems from Ergene River, located by the project area which was used for farming, but now it is contaminated and lost the natural habitat because of industrial growth. From Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, the vestiges of “water architecture” are still visible by the river. Our proposal is to purify river and strengthen the relation of human with water, nature and cultural heritage.

[bio_tube] Reshape Digital Craft Competition Honorable Mention Fall 2013 Group Project | Digital Fabrication Instructors: Edouard Cabay, Alexandre Dubor, Anastasia Pistofidou and Chirag Rangholia Team: Sinem Samanci, Sebastian Alvarado Grugiel and Rodolfo Parolin Hardy
This project explores the idea of making the highest structure with four sheets of 40x84 cm plywood by using digital fabrication techniques. The concept stems from native basket weaving techniques which can be used as a structural system to develop different kind of three-dimensional volumes. BIOTUBE is the result of experimenting wood properties for warping, bending, joining and twisting. It was developed by strips with different length, width and fiber directions to find the best performance of the structure. After assembling the
main grid, the structure can be reinforced with longer pieces gradually. The simple and clever joinery system is designed, giving the structure the possibility to grow in height by pulling it in the longitudinal axis, as the diameter contracts. The opposite effect can be achieved by expanding the diameter, resulting in a shorter tower. The form has the flexibility of changing the shape without any adverse effect on the structure.
