STOR Y

Rebecca Rong:

Girl Reporter in The Case of the Bowled-Over Books By Adan Jimenez & Felicia Low-Jimenez

“Becca!” a voice called out. “Where are you?” “Is that your mum, Becca?” Danny asked. “It sounds like she's looking for you.” “Excellent deduction, Daniel, my good man,” Rebecca replied, her ponytail swishing as she turned her head to look at him. “It is indeed my dearest mummy who is looking for me.” The two children were peeking out from the corner of a tall bookshelf and were secretly observing the tall, skinny man with glasses standing behind the counter. The man was smiling and putting a stack of books into a brown paperbag for a young lady standing in front of him. “Why are you speaking funny?” Danny asked, pushing his glasses up. “Also, why are we hiding behind this bookshelf?” “I am speaking the Queen's English, my dear friend,” Rebecca said, staring at her best friend from down the bridge of her nose. It was quite hard to do especially since Daniel was taller than she was. “Also, we are hiding from my mother because we need to talk to the shopkeep. It is impertinent that we speak to him.” “I think you mean imperative, Becca,” Danny corrected. “That means essential or very important. Impertinent means--” “There you are, you impertinent child,” Becca's mother yelled from behind them where she caught her bold and brazen daughter. “I've been calling for you for the last five minutes. Have you suddenly gone deaf?” “My hearing is perfect, mummy dearest,” Rebecca loftily replied. “Daniel and I were merely waiting to speak to the shopkeep for our article. And as all

good reporters know, patience is key to any good story.” “Why are you speaking weirdly?” Mum asked, looking at her only child with a raised eyebrow. “What television programmes has Dad been letting you watch while I was out of town for work?” “I think it was a British television show about an investigative reporter who solves crime,” Danny said, nodding. “That explains a lot,” Mum sighed. “Well, alright then. You can wait in line with Danny to interview the bookshop owner. He's a friend of mine, you know. Remember to call him Uncle Kenny.” “Then you mustn't be around, mummy darling,” Rebecca said, pushing her mother away. “You might contaminate the evidence. Also, we do not refer to our interview subjects as 'Uncle'. We refer to them as Sir or Mister.” “What evidence?” Mum muttered. “I really need to talk to her dad about the shows he lets her watch. Last week, she was prancing around the house pretending she was a horse.” Mum allowed herself to be pushed to the New Arrivals section. She needed a good book or ten anyways. She was fresh out. Plus, she could keep an eye on her daughter from where she was. “Excuse me, kind Sir,” Rebecca began. “Might I

have a moment of your time?” “Eh? Who said that?” the tall man replied, sounding confused. “Oh! It's the two kids who have been hiding behind my shelves. You guys are shorter up close. How can I help you?” “We need to question you about any possible crimes that might have occurred in your steamy presence,” Becca replied. She had flipped her notebook open and her pencil was poised to take down notes like any good reporter. “Er... I think Becca means 'esteemed' presence, Uncle,” Danny replied with a wince. Uncle Kenny quickly coughed and quickly hid his grin behind his hand. “I see. Well, before I can share any of my secrets with you, I'll need to find out exactly how you will be using this important information.” “Why, it is for our school report, of course,” Becca replied. She wrote, “The shopkeep was a curious man. Perhaps too curious?” in her notebook. When she showed it to Danny, he mouthed “huh?” at her.

Uncle Kenny took her bus pass and carefully inspected it. He kept looking at Rebecca's photograph and comparing it with the actual girl. At one point, he even held up the bus pass right next to Rebecca's face. She impatiently smiled like she was doing in the photograph just so that it would match. Danny tried his best not to laugh. “Alright then,” Uncle Kenny said, handing back her bus pass. “I've seen enough proof. Ask away.” “Finally!” Becca huffed before she remembered that good reporters would never show any signs of impatience. “Would you care to tell us what crafty crimes have been commenced in your store, Sir?” “Committed, Becca,” Danny interjected, pushing his glasses up again. “What crimes have been committed.” Rebecca turned to glare at her friend. He shrugged in return. Danny was always getting full marks for his vocabulary. Rebecca on the other hand usually received a “See me later” scrawled by the teacher.

“Ah. A school report. I've done those,” Uncle Kenny replied, scratching his chin thoughtfully. “Do you have any credential to prove that you're in fact students and not forty-year-old spies from my competition who just look incredibly young?” Becca's mum, who was hiding behind the same bookshelf her daughter had been using before, had to stifle a laugh. Uncle Kenny caught her eye and winked. “Indeed I do,” Becca replied with a toss of her ponytail. She reached into her backpack and pulled out her school bus pass. “This clearly proves I am a Primary Four student.”
