The new school year has begun! Get the kids together with these back-to-school crafts. By Amanda Tan

Create your very own calendar or memo board using a cork board, some post-it notes, thumbtacks and key rings. Simply arrange the post-it notes according to the days of the month, and attach the remaining post-it notes to the key rings. You can then hang them up on the cork board with the thumbtacks. Now you’ll never forget about your dates and appointments again!

colourful keyboard Add your own personal touch to your computer or laptop by making custom keyboard stickers using washi tape. Get washi tape of different prints and patterns, and then cut it out to scale to fit each key. Once you have the tape on, use your finger to smooth down the corners and edges and rub each key down. It might be backbreaking work but the results are well worth it!

roll-up pencil case Have an empty kitchen towel roll? Instead of throwing it away, give it an eco-friendly makeover by turning it into a felt pencil case to store your pens and pencils. Just cut the roll into two for the cover and the case. Then, sew up one end of the roll with cardboard circles, and wrap it up in felt. Attach the zip last.

Keep Kids

Engaged in Learning

PHOTO GETTY IMAGES

Ultimately, we want our kids to love to learn. A passion for learning is quite different from just studying to earn a grade, or to please parents or teachers. Here are a few things you can do to engage your child in learning. By Lim Wee Ming, Founder of My Little Genius

hen we were students, we fared better for subjects that we loved, whereas we usually fared worse for subjects that we disliked or had no interest in. It is also exactly due to this reason that students' results can range from distinction to a normal passing grade. We have seen so many cases on how academic results are proportional to a child's interest level. With so many distractions around the student, it is no wonder that their focus and concentration are much shorter, and this urgent issue has become an alarming problem for parents to address. No doubt, children love to learn. They learn best when they are excited and motivated to listen and learn. The key is how to make the subjects and activities interesting for the children to be engaged and to want to learn more. Interest can be cultivated when the child is young. You can also use innovative methods to draw the child's attention and concentration. One way to ensure that your child is engaged in education is to let them apply the knowledge that they have learnt in school. For instance, when a school teaches values such as resilience, you can give real-life, day-to-day examples of people who are close to him, so that they can relate to them and understand the importance of resilience. Case studies are also useful for a child to relate to the stories and learn from mistakes. Expose your child to many different activities, but within the same time frame. Build up your child's stamina. It is ideal to start from young, where the potential for brain development is higher. Children enjoy it when their parents take an active role in their learning journey. Constantly speak and listen to them to keep abreast of the things that they do in school and at home. Last but not least, always praise your child. Praising is something that a lot of parents do not do. A simple praise will greatly increase your child’s self-confidence and motivation to try their best in whatever they do, developing holistically as a result.

Stanl Stoop, Sheriff of Tumbleweed

e p o l a k c a J The Strikes! ne KIDZo By Adan Jimenez & Felicia Low-Jimenez Illustrations by Isabel Cheong

Sheriff Stanley was taking a nice nap, and he was having a very good dream. In his dream, he was sitting in his office, at his desk, taking a nap. It was quite an excellent dream, until he was woken up in his dream by Miss Molly entering his office and saying something about something.

6 KIDZone

Then he woke up in real life. The real Miss Molly was not in his real office, but Sheriff Stanley felt uneasy. Uneasy enough that he did not immediately go back to sleep. “Hurm.

He pondered a few moments. “I’m sure it was just a dream.” He settled back to nap again when he heard a scream! He fell back in his chair and landed on the floor with a thud! He quickly got up.

AHH!!!

“That was Miss Molly!” he said. He ran out of the sheriff’s office and into Tumbleweed’s main (and only) street. He looked left and he looked right. The street was full of people going about their business. Stu’s Saloon seemed peaceful enough. Calamitous Cathy’s Critter Canyon Pet Store seemed fine as well. Even Miss Molly’s General Store looked like nothing was going on. In fact, the whole of Tumbleweed looked perfectly okay. Had Sheriff Stanley imagined the scream? Suddenly, his trusty horse galloped up next to him and neighed. “What’s wrong, Potassium?” Sheriff Stanley asked. “Did somebody fall down a well?” Potassium neighed again, and shook her head. “Well, what then?” Potassium galloped down the main street and stopped in front of the General Store. She turned back and motioned with her head. Sheriff Stanley followed her down the street, tipping his hat to all the passersby, who seemed to ignore him. “That’s kinda rude,” he said to himself. When he reached the General Store, he looked inside. There was nobody there. Sheriff Stanley looked back at Potassium, who seemed to shrug. “Well then, why did you bring me here?” Sheriff Stanley asked.

Sheriff Stanley rushed in and searched the store. He found Billy the Bandit hiding behind a fort made out of boxes of cereal. “What are you doing here?” Sheriff Stanley asked. “Shhh!” Billy the Bandit hissed. “You’ll tell it where I am!” “Tell who? What?” Sheriff Stanley took off his hat and scratched his head. “What in tarnation—” “KI-YAAAAAAH!” Sheriff Stanley jumped out of his boots and hit his head on a shelf containing canned beans. “I’ve got you, you varmint!” Sheriff Stanley felt someone’s arms put him into a sleeper hold. “What are you doing?” he tried to gurgle out. “Sheriff Stanley?” The arms around him relaxed and Sheriff Stanley fell into a heap.

Potassium neighed again and galloped away.

“Oh my Gosh!” Calamitous Cathy said. “I’m so sorry, Sheriff! I thought you were the jackalope!”

“What is wrong with that dang horse?”

Sheriff Stanley coughed. “The what?”

There was another scream inside the General Store!

“The jackalope!” Calamitous Cathy repeated. “It’s somewhere in the General Store!”
