Tips for parents to outdoor play

Give children a place

on the balcony or in the bedroom where they can display nature treasures that they find and want to keep.

Provide simple tools to aid discovery.

Kids love tools! Include a bug box, trowel, and magnifier. When you take children to parks, allow them to explore. Let them decide which trails to take. Stay nearby for safety, but don’t interfere or help, unless asked.

Encourage plenty of time outside.

Consider taking a walk to the library, store or post office instead of driving. If a child asks or remarks about a landmark that you drive past often, find out

more about it and go for a visit.

Singapore lacks natural resources, so take advantage of the outdoor activities available. Take children

canoeing, kayaking or fishing. Provide a tree

identification book

to help kids learn about the trees in their own neighbourhood. Take a few leaves from the different trees while the children are not looking. Give them the leaves and ask them to find which trees they

come from.

Put out bird feeders that can be seen easily from windows.

Let children help feed the birds. Keep a bird

book by the window to help them identify what they see.

Make up challenges for children to do outside, similar to the

“Survivor” television show. This is a guaranteed kid pleaser, especially if there is a reward (a gift of time with Mum or Dad, or perhaps a night off from helping with the dishes). If you have an appropriate area,

let the older children pitch a tent in the patio. Set safety rules, and

then stay away while they discuss hot topics with their friends. Check for safety by looking out the window or wandering out to ask if they need more snacks.

Get right into the action with

“Transformers: Age of Extinction! Grimlock

The king of the Dinobots believes you should smash first and ask questions later. He's one of the most powerful warriors in the universe. He likes nothing more than showing off his strength, leaving his enemies stomped, chomped, or turned to ash by a blast of his fire breath.

OPTIMUS PRIME

Optimus Prime is the most powerful Autobot. The noble warrior has fought for the cause of freedom for centuries, and he will not stop until he has brought peace to the universe. With new enemies threatening his adopted home, the heroic Autobot leader is rebuilt and ready to defend Earth from evil!

BUMBLEBEE

Bumblebee might not be the biggest bot, but he's got more courage than any soldier from Cybertron. The battle-tested Autobot was the first to forge a human alliance. As the most trusted lieutenant of Optimus Prime, he'll do whatever it takes to protect Earth and its people.

The Totally Ridiculous Adventures of Trill and Sofa:

Space Shenanigans! By Adan Jimenez & Felicia Low-Jimenez

Sofa was staring into the oven and waiting patiently for the angel food cake he had made to finish baking. Well, maybe not too patiently. If he were actually being patient, he'd be doing something else. But he had already washed the dishes, beaten the video game he was playing, mopped the floor, made and ate a bowl of nachos, and cleaned his room.

floating a little off the chair. “It's amazing out there! The scientists all say it's mostly empty space out there, which is why they call it outer space, but it's actually full of all kinds of neat stuff! There are satellites, raccoons, cab drivers, pirates, walking trees, strange Adams, quasars, comet captains, and dinosaurs!”

He was thinking about reading his favourite book again, John Halson's “Indestructible Shapes”, when Trill rocketed through the front door!

“Dinosaurs in outer space?” Sofa asked, waddling into the living room. “That seems unlikely. Maybe they were dragons? People mix up dragons and dinosaurs all the time.”

“Guess what, Sofa!” Trill shouted, flying circles around the ceiling. “What?” Sofa asked. “I'm home!” Trill zoomed in the air a bit more before landing on chair. “What have you been doing all this time?” “Oh, nothing really,” Sofa said. “Where did you go?” “I've just come back from space!” Trill shouted,

“Hurm, perhaps you're right,” Trill said, floating back down to the chair. “A mystery to be solved another day,” Sofa said, waddling back to the kitchen. “Another day?” Trill asked. “Why not solve it today?!” Sofa stopped in mid-waddle as Trill flew into the air. “But what about my cake?” Sofa asked.

“We'll eat it when we get back,” Trill said, as he opened the chest plate on his cylindrical body to reveal rows upon rows of buttons. There were so many buttons, some were on top of each other! “We need to find the Teleporting Ape Button,” Trill said. He went past the Goldfish Memory Enhancer Button, the Flying Walrus Button, and the UseEcholocation-To-Find-Your-Keys Button before finding the Teleporting Ape Button. “Ah-ha!” Trill shouted. “Stand back, Sofa! I'm not sure how large this Teleporting Ape will be!” Sofa waddled into the kitchen as Trill pressed the Teleporting Ape Button and a regular-sized chimpanzee appeared in the middle of the living room. He wore a white shirt, tan slacks, red suspenders, and a brown newsboy cap.

his eyes to avoid a headache. “Okay, we're here,” Beale said. Sofa opened his eyes and found himself in a welllit cave. There were lights strung up all around the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. It seemed as if the stalagmites on the ground had been cleared away, and now there was a very nice living room set in the cave, with a couch, two end tables, and an entertainment set. “Are you sure this is the right place, Beale?” Trill asked, looking around. “This doesn't really look like a place a space dinosaur would hang out.

“The name's Beale,” the chimpanzee said. He sniffed the air, then asked, “Where ya goin'?” “I'm Trill, and that's Sofa, and we're going to outer space!” Trill said. “Can you be more specific?” Beale asked. “Outer space is pretty big, ya know?” “Then take us to the space dinosaurs!” Trill said. “There's really just the one, kid,” Beale said, “but I can take you to her.” “Just one space dinosaur?” Sofa asked. “That's right,” Beale said. “Now hold my hands. Things might get a bit bumpy.” Trill and Sofa each held one of Beale's hands, though Sofa did so cautiously. Beale then muttered something under his breath. Sofa leaned in close to listen, but was startled when Beale suddenly shouted, “All right, ramblers! Let's get rambling!” Sofa's vision shimmered and he felt a little rumble in his tummy, and he remembered his cake. He hoped it would be okay while he was away. Sofa's vision got blurrier and blurrier, so he closed

Suddenly, there was a roar from further inside the cave. “I stand corrected,” Trill said. “Perhaps I should have made sure the space dinosaur was a friendly one before we set off.” “Oh, fiddlesticks!” something said from further inside the cave. Trill, Sofa, and Beale strained their eyes to see deeper in the cave. They could only see a vaguely reptilian outline. It seemed to be holding something in its hands. Then it started walking towards them. When it came into view, they saw a fairly tall green dinosaur. It had two horns on its head and red ridges going from between its horns all the way to the tip of its green tail. It also had two green wings that it wrapped around its body underneath its arms. “Oh!” the dinosaur said. “Beale, I didn't realise you had brought friends!” “How ya doin', Outie?” Beale said. “These are my new pals Trill and Sofa. They wanted to meetcha. Guys, this is Outiesaurus, the Outer Space Dinosaur. She's the only one of her kind.” Outie rushed towards Trill and Sofa and shook their hands. “It's very nice to meet you!” she said. “I don't get a lot of visitors this time of year besides Beale.” “Why's that?” Trill asked. “Because space is very cold, and my cave only opens when we get closer to the Sun,” Outiesaurus said. “My cave is inside an asteroid travelling through space. But Beale always knows where I am and he visits me when he's not teleporting people through all of known space.” “You mean this is your job?” Sofa asked Beale. “Sure, kid,” Beale said. “Did you think your pal was the only one with a Teleporting Ape Button? Just be glad you didn't get Kong. That mook has the directional sense of a flying walrus.”
