Old Possessions,

new look

Give your old things a makeover to make them useful around the house again! By Amanda Tan

Serving Frames

There's no need for purchasing more kitchen furnishings when you can easily repurpose your old things. Try switching an old and ordinary tray for a pretty and engraved photo frame instead. Slot a piece of patterned paper into the frame and reassemble it with the glass panel and cardboard backing. Though it may be rather small, its charming and dainty appearance is worth that extra trip to the kitchen and back!

Tennis Ball Holder

Not sure what to do with your old tennis ball? Make it reusable by simply slicing it into half with a penknife, without going all the way through. Stash any item that is small and light enough to be slotted through the opening. Use it to hang your house keys or a hand cloth, or even to hold letters and envelopes! For a fun and animated look, draw a pair of eyes on the ball, and then stick it on a wall or position it on your desk.

Stationery Pockets

Denim is such a versatile material that you can use it for any ol' craft and still make it appear classy and chic. One such craft is by using the pockets of your old jeans. Cut out pockets of different shades and sizes, and glue only the sides and the bottom to a wooden plank or a large sheet of fabric. After leaving them to dry, you can start storing your stationery in the denim compartments.

Jewellery Racket

If you have no use for a sports racket anymore, don't throw it away just yet! Turn it around with a feminine touch and hang your jewellery and accessories by hooking your earrings and attaching necklaces and bracelets around the wire. We love a good jewellery organiser and this one does not disappoint. Simple, classic with a funky retro feel! Keep your earrings and necklaces ready with this clever tennis racket up-cycle.

Tips for Acting Boldly to Change Diet and Exercise for Kids As parents, you can help your children establish the necessary and lifelong habits of healthy eating and exercise. ACT BOLDLY as a/an… Role Model

what goes into their meals and maintain healthy cooking habits as they grow up. Protect the time you eat with your kids. Studies have shown that children who dine at regular family mealtimes get better nutrition, perform better in school, and bond better with their families. Change their media diet. Limit TV time to one to two hours of quality programming per day, monitor Internet use, and ensure that they avoid snacking during TV time.

Be sure to eat healthy, wholesome foods, and get plenty of exercise yourself. Be consistent; this should be a permanent part of your lifestyle. Set a good example.

Gatekeeper

You have the power to monitor and control what your kids eat, the exercise they get, and the time they spend watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing video games. You’re in charge.

CHANGE their EXERCISE routine… Make time to play or be active with your kids. Set aside at least one hour every day to play catch, go for a walk, jog, cycle or swim. Ensure your kids get enough activity to balance the calories they take in. Give them gifts that encourage activity, such as sporting equipment, or enrol them in club sports teams. Walk with your kids as much as possible – to school or after dinner, instead of watching TV. Move around at home with your kids, or work around the house.

Taste-Setter

You can influence your kids’ appreciation for the flavours of healthy food early on. Start them off right.

Advocate

Push for positive changes in child care, schools and your community that support healthy eating and exercise. Kids have the right to be healthy.

Physical Activity Checklist

Get your kids to play/exercise for at least an hour a day.

Take a walk, jog, cycle or swim with them.

Take them to the park, or run around at the playground.

Let them watch only one to two hours of quality TV each day.

PHOTO GETTY IMAGES

CHANGE their DIET… Match calorie intake and portion sizes to your child’s age and activity level. Find ways to make family favourites healthier by using more nutritious ingredients (eg. more veggies, less fat), or healthier methods of cooking (eg. grilling or baking instead of frying). Connect kids to their food by introducing them to new, healthy foods, and allowing them to help with food shopping and preparation. This is so they can understand

Rise & Shine Start your day in style with these fabulous brunch recipes extracted from Tools of the Trade’s (ToTT) Cookbook, “Best Brunch Ever – Delicious Morning Recipes to Savour”!

Cornbread Wedges with Bacon Jam Recipe courtesy of Dan Segall, Group Executive Chef of The Big Idea

(a) Cornbread (Serves 6-8) Ingredients 2/3 cup unsalted butter 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup polenta or yellow cornmeal ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tbsp sugar 1 cup whole milk 2 eggs

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. In a cast aluminium cornbread and dessert pan, or heavy cast iron skillet, add the butter. Place the pan in the oven to melt the butter and heat up. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, polenta, salt, baking powder and sugar. In a separate bowl, combine the milk and eggs, and whisk until frothy and well incorporated. 3. Slowly add the milk and eggs to the dry ingredients and gently stir together. Be careful not to over mix. Once combined,

carefully remove the pan from the oven and pour the melted butter into the batter. Stir well and pour the batter into the skillet, ensuring it is not filled to more than ¾ full. 4. Bake until the sides of the bread start to pull away from the pan, for 20-25 minutes. Test by sticking the centre of the bread with a wooden pick; it should come out clean but not dry. 5. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Remove and serve warm with bacon jam.

(b) Bacon Jam Ingredients 500g bacon, chopped 100g white or yellow onions, chopped 25g garlic, chopped 50g raisins 100g brown sugar 40ml balsamic vinegar Tiny pinch mace, allspice or nutmeg

Brings Modern Sci-Fi to The Classic Story One of the most classic and revered stories of all time, TARZAN returns to the big screen, completely re-imagined for a new generation. Here's a sneak peek into the movie.

I

t is now present day. On an expedition in the remote African jungle, John Greystoke and his wife are killed in a helicopter crash while investigating a mysterious meteorite site. Only their young son J.J. – nicknamed as Tarzan – survives. A group of gorillas discovers the boy in the wreckage and takes him in as their own. Tarzan grows up in the jungle and becomes an independent and strong man. Nearly a decade passes before Tarzan meets another human being – the courageous and beautiful young Jane Porter. Some years later, Jane comes back to Africa with William Clayton, a cunning businessman who wants to find the same cave explored by the Greystokes. Jane discovers the truth about William and becomes a target. Tarzan uses his animal instinct and human intellect to save the jungle and the woman he loves.

Meet the Characters

Tarzan

An extremely brave, loyal and honourable character, Tarzan cares deeply about his family and friends, and is willing to risk his life to save them. He is voiced by Kellan Lutz (best known for his role as Emmett Cullen in 'The Twilight Saga') as an adult and by Anton Zetterholm (a musical actor who played Tarzan, from 2008 to 2010, in its musical version) as a teenager.

Jane Porter IN CINEMAS MARCH 13

An intelligent and beautiful young woman, Jane is shown to be somewhat talkative, yet charming. Jane is voiced by Spencer Locke, who is best known for her role as K-Mart in the 'Resident Evil' franchise.

Did You In the original story of Tarzan, he was only an infant when his mother died of natural causes and his father was killed by Kerchak, leader of the ape tribe by whom Tarzan was adopted.

Know?

As a young adult, Tarzan met a young American woman, Jane Porter. She, her father, and others of their party were marooned on exactly the same coastal jungle area where Tarzan's biological parents were twenty years earlier. When Jane returned to the United States, Tarzan left the jungle in search of her, his one true love. In 'The Return of Tarzan', Tarzan and Jane were married.

William Clayton William usually acts like a calm, chivalrous gentleman, but he is in fact selfish, greedy and ruthless. He is voiced by Trevor St. John, whose first major acting role was in the television movie 'Serving in Silence'.
