3 Key Skills foR Academic Success
It’s never too early or too late to help your child develop the skills for academic success. Duncan Rose, Head of Schools, British Council Singapore, shares some valuable tips to help get your child on the right track.
Communicate effectively
Enjoy learning
Identify problem areas
Wondering how you can help your child to speak up? Communicative language methodology ensures a child-centred approach to learning. At the British Council, we operate smaller classes than local MOE schools, and organise students into groups to ensure that collaboration and teamwork are part of every lesson. By encouraging group work and the sharing of ideas, students develop greater confidence and are more able to share ideas. Ideally, teachers employ a system of encouraging students to share ideas in pairs, then in groups, and finally, with the whole class. This helps to build confidence at every stage to ensure that when the student relates information to the class, they are comfortable and confident.
School should not only be about education, but also engagement. Students who are engaged will invest time and generally have better academic attainment. At the British Council, we endeavour to make learning enjoyable. We have the ability to teach practical skills, which benefit students, but in an engaging and interesting way. Good education systems seek to harness students’ imagination and to ensure that they remain engaged and on task by providing students with challenges. These can appear to be fun but they also educate, inform and develop the individual. Activities in class should include elements of fun as these are essential to language learning, making it more memorable.
Problem solving is a key skill in the workplace in the 21st Century. Indeed, critical thinking and problem solving not only aid future academic study, but they enhance employability and ensure access to a range of jobs, which encourage creative problem solving. Critical thinking is not something that is ‘taught’; it is a skill that has to be grown and developed through constant reinforcement and encouragement. Workshops may introduce students to notions of problem solving but it is important to understand that not every problem is the same and that different problems have different solutions. Consequently, students need constant exposure to new and more interesting puzzles, problems and challenges in order to develop good skills in this area.

Top Spots for Bacteria
Computer keyboards contain 7,500 bacteria per swab – much more than an average toilet seat, which has 5,400. We have between two to 10 million bacteria between our fingertips and elbow. The kitchen floor in front of the sink has more bacteria than the average trash can. Mobile phones have 18 times more bacteria than toilet door handles. Shopping carts and anything else used by the general public are all hot spots for germs to breed.

How to Wash Hands
Wash your hands with soap and running water.
Lather the soap to get all the necessary germ protection.
Wash your hands for at least 10 seconds*.
*As per lab test, Lifebuoy kills 99.9% germs in just 10 seconds. 10 seconds refer to lathering time only.
How to Protect Your Family Disinfect a sponge by wetting and microwaving it for 1-2 minutes. Ensure your kids cough or sneeze into a handkerchief or tissue. Avoid packing lunch or touching food while doing the laundry, as bacteria from your dirty clothes could find their way into your family’s food. Kill 80% to 90% of active germs by cleaning surfaces with a tissue or cloth.

Mind Your Manners
at the dinner table Here’s our guide to help you navigate the complicated world of table setting etiquette.
H
aving a dinner party tonight and your guests are coming over in 20 minutes? Going out to a fancy restaurant and you’re not too familiar with formal silverware? Here’s a quick reference to the table setting etiquette.
Napkin
As soon as you are seated, unfold your napkin and place it on your lap. The napkin remains on your lap (except for use) until the end of the meal. If you need to leave the table temporarily, you may leave the napkin on your chair as a signal to the waiter that you will be returning. At the end of your meal, place your napkin partly folded (don’t crumple it!), on the left side of your plate.
56 singapore’s child | december 2014
The place setting
The traditional place setting has the forks on the left side, and knives (always turned inward, facing the plate) and spoons on the right side. The silverware is placed in the order of use, so that you can follow the rule – “begin from the outside and work in” towards the plate! The butter knife, used only for spreading butter, should be already on your bread plate. Dessert spoons/ forks are usually brought in with the dessert or in order with the other silverware, closest (last) to the side of the plate – forks on the left, and spoons on the right. Sometimes, the dessert silverware is placed above the dinner plate. If the utensil is a spoon, the handle goes to the left. But if it’s a fork, the handle is pointed to the right.

Plate
Here are two little tips for you to remember where utensils go at each table setting.
Serviette (napkin)
Salad Fork
Dinner Fork
No oars
Once your silverware is picked up from the table, it should not touch the table again. Hence, do not rest your silverware half on the table and half on the plate. Instead, place it on the outer rim of the plate in between bites.
Dinner Knife
Teaspoon
Soup Spoon
dish will be removed from your right side when you’ve finished. Passing salt and pepper
Salt and pepper are always passed together, even if someone asks you only for the salt. They are considered “married” in proper dining circles.
On the left of the plate is the fork. L-E-F-T and F-O-R-K each have four letters in them. On the right of the plate are the knife and spoon. R-I-G-H-T, K-N-I-F-E, and S-P-O-O-N each have five letters in them.
Make an “ok” sign with both hands by touching the tips of your thumbs to the tips of your forefingers to make a lowercase 'b' with your left hand and a lowercase 'd' with your right hand. This reminds you that "bread and butter" go to the left of the table setting and "drinks" go on the right.
When to start
In gatherings of six or less people, begin eating only after everyone is served. For larger groups, such as banquets, it is customary to start eating after four or five people have been served, or permission is granted from those not yet served.
Wine glasses
Hold a stemmed glass by the stem. This is to prevent chilled drinks, such as white wine, from becoming warm by your hand. But it holds for nonchilled drinks as well. The finish
Bread and rolls
These are broken off into bite-sized pieces, and butter is spread on each bite as you eat it. Never use a knife to cut the bread, nor butter a whole slice at once. Butter should be taken when passed, and placed onto your bread plate – not directly onto your bread. Serving food
Dishes are passed from left to right. When a waiter serves you, food will be presented on your left, and the
When you are done with each course, your knife (blade turned inward) and fork should be placed beside each other on the plate, diagonally from upper left to lower right (if you imagine your plate as a clock face, rest both knife and fork with the handles resting on the 5, and their tips pointing toward the 11). This is a signal to the waiter that you are done. Also, do not push your plate away or rearrange your dishes from their position when you are finished.
A s i a n N at i o n
Do you know your chopsticks etiquette?
Do not: • Gesture, tap or spear food with your chopsticks, or lick the tips of your chopsticks. • Stick your chopsticks straight up in your rice bowl. This visual reminds many Asians of the joss incense sticks used during ceremonies for ancestors who have passed away. • Set your chopsticks flat on the table. Instead, balance your chopsticks on top of your plate, or lean them on your chopstick rest.

Into The Woods E x pecte d r e leas e: JAN uary 2015 This humorous and heartfelt musical is a modern twist on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales, such as “Cinderella”, “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, and “Rapunzel”, and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. These plots are tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family, and their interaction with a witch who has put a curse on them.
Shaun The Sheep Movie E x pecte d r e leas e: Fe b r uary 2015 When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. Max Steel E x pecte d r e leas e: Mar c h 2015 When teenage Max McGrath discovers his body can generate the universe’s most powerful energy, he must bond with the only being able to contain it – a mysterious technoorganic extra-terrestrial named Steel. United as the superhero Max Steel, the two friends must combat an alien menace and unlock the secrets of their past.
Spongebob: Sponge Out Of Water E x pecte d r e leas e: Mar c h 2015 In this movie, Burger Beard is a pirate who is in search of the final page of a magical book that makes any evil plan he writes in it come true, which happens to be the Krabby Patty secret formula. In order to get back the recipe and save their city, SpongeBob and the gang must retrieve the book and transform themselves into superheroes.
Avengers: Age of Ultron E x pecte d r e leas e: Apr i l 2015 Marvel Studios presents the epic follow-up to the biggest superhero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping programme, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance.
Inside Out E x p e c t e d r e l e a s e : J u ne 2 0 1 5 This film takes us to the most extraordinary location of all – inside the mind of an 11-year-old named Riley. Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness.
Jurassic World E x p e c t e d r e l e a s e : J u ne 2 0 1 5 Twenty-two years after the events of ‘Jurassic Park’, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World. Owen, a member of Jurassic World’s on-site staff, conducts behavioural research on the Velociraptors. After many years, Jurassic World’s attendance rates begin to decline and a new attraction, created to re-spark visitors’ interest, gravely backfires.
Minions E x p e c t e d r e l e a s e : J u ne 2 0 1 5 Kevin – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever female supervillain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind... from annihilation.
Goosebumps E x pecte d r e leas e: Au g u st 2015 Zach, 14, is overwhelmed by a new town, new school, and new teen neighbour, Hannah – whom he becomes certain is in danger. Trying to “rescue” her, though, Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters created and brought to life by her writer-father, R.L. Stine, author of the “Goosebumps” stories. Now, Stine, Zach, Hannah and teen fan-boy Dwayne must put the monsters back where they came from, before it’s too late.
The Good Dinosaur E x p e c t e d r e l e a s e : N o v em b e r 2 0 1 5 What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and that giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event rattles Arlo’s tranquil community, he sets out on a quest to restore peace, gaining an unlikely companion along the way – a young human boy named Spot. *Exact dates to be confirmed

Weird & Wonderful Mammals The grizzly bear is the fiercest mammal in North America. Female bears are especially dangerous when they are protecting their cubs. Grizzlies can run as fast as 50 kilometres per hour – even racehorses would find it difficult to escape a rushing grizzly!
Grizzlies are experts at catching salmon.
They have big, powerful jaws and long claws that are the length of a human finger.

Cheetahs are the world's fastest animals on land. In order to survive, a cheetah needs to be even faster than the animals that it hunts. Cheetahs hunt fastrunning animals, including gazelles, impala and wildebeest.
They can run up to 110 kilometres per hour – as fast as a car on the highway!

A cheetah has yellow-grey fur with dark spots. Its fur makes it difficult to see in long grass. This is called camouflage, and helps it stalk its prey.
The killer whale, or orca, is not a whale. It is the biggest member of the dolphin family. Killer whales have powerful bodies and many strong teeth.
This is a
KILLER WHALE. Male killer whales have the tallest dorsal fins of any animal. They can grow up to two metres high. The dorsal fin helps the killer whale with high-speed swimming.

Muscles always benefit from exercising, and the same is true of that three kilograms mass of matter that lies between your ears, commonly known as your brain.

DOODLE Ask your parents for a used book to doodle in, or even a used or broken appliance to doodle on. Have fun with it!
Go somewhere Ask around, see if anyone you know is taking a day trip to some place that you've never been, and tag along – even if it's a short distance away. Just try to make it somewhere new and different.

It sounds simple. But, just the act of getting up and hopping on one foot causes a lot of blood to flow through your brain, making it much stronger.
