“I didn’t know I was pregnant…” Three mums share their (shocking) discovery.

CARRIER TIPS keep your little one calm and happy

pregnancy / true stories

I didn’t know I was pregnant

Three mummies we spoke to share with us their pregnancy stories on how they didn’t know they were pregnant.

“My husband couldn’t believe it. He went, ‘WHAT? Are you sure?’ Though my husband was ecstatic to find out that we were expecting, he was initially in disbelief,” she shares with a sheepish smile. STRESS AND GUILT

“Oh my wow, I’m pregnant? NO WAY! I’m still having my period.” Masrifah is a nurse and a mother of four who loves to cook.

T 4 january 2016

he discovery of Masrifah’s pregnancy was not typical – it wasn’t through a home pregnancy test kit or a trip to the OBGYN – she found out she was pregnant only when she started bleeding a week after her period ended.

decided to consult her doctor though she was feeling in the pink of health. “I just wanted to be sure that everything was ok, I didn’t go and see the doctor to be told that I was pregnant and possibly having a baby anytime!” she says.

“Can you imagine? I found out I was pregnant only when the baby was well into the third trimester at seven months! I was having my period regularly for the previous six months and I did not suspect that I was pregnant. There was no morning sickness and I was already then a mother of three. I knew how it feels like to be pregnant.”

SURPRISE

When she starting bleeding the week after her period ended, she

“At the clinic, the doctor gave me a jab immediately to stop the bleeding and to help halt the possibility of a premature birth.” The fourth child sure had her way of surprising them. “We were totally caught off-guard. There were absolutely no signs – no vomiting, no special cravings and no weight gain. I was out and about doing my usual night shift rounds and duties as a nurse!” Masrifah describes.

Adding on to the surprise immediately was the stress and guilt of realising how she didn’t give the prenatal care that a growing foetus should get. Because she didn’t know she was pregnant, she missed out on taking the supplements that are beneficial to growth and development, especially during the first trimester. As a nurse, Masrifah knew the importance of prenatal supplements such as folic acid. All she could do then was to follow her doctor’s advice and pray that everything will be all right – it was a test of faith. There was no time to lose and the family scrambled to prepare for baby’s arrival. Preparing for the little one’s arrival was surreal. “It really felt like a gift from God. A pleasant surprise that came with occasional anxiety and guilt trips of ‘if only I knew earlier’ and ‘how can I not know’!” After two short months, she delivered the fourth child! “It was such a special moment to finally deliver! We finally met this little one who announced her presence only at seven months!” exclaimed Mas.

“I stood in a pool of blood.” Prep Work

“Never think that every pregnancy is the same! No matter how many times you have been a mum, there is bound to be a surprise somehow.” – Masrifah

Pregnancy Detection Don’t rely on your intuition. Every pregnancy is different. Don’t dismiss missed periods as irregular menstrual cycle.

Heather is a mother of two who believes in eating well and staying positive in life.

B

eing one who is health-conscious and very aware of her body, Heather (not her real name) was shocked to find out that she was pregnant the hard way – through a miscarriage. “I was showering and suddenly, I started to bleed profusely and the entire bathroom floor was bloody! I didn’t know what to do and froze,” Heather recalls. It was only minutes later that she snapped out of shock and got dressed. Somehow, her first instinct was to get hold of a pregnancy test kit at the pharmacy. “I almost fainted when I saw the faint double strips that indicated positive – I was pregnant. And what would the profuse bleeding mean?” That night, all Heather could think of was the little life in her. The following morning, at the gynaecologist’s clinic, her initial shock and

fear was turned to dismay when she found out that her baby’s heartbeat was weak, and that she had little chance of carrying it to full term. On top of that, it was a threatened miscarriage. To prevent further complications to both mother and child, Heather underwent D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure. Though it was traumatic for Heather, she remarked with positivity, “It happened so quickly, it was like I suddenly had a baby one day, and the next, it was taken away. But I believe in fate, what is mine is mine – what is meant to be is meant to be.” A few months shortly after this episode, Heather managed to overcome the stress. She later conceived and subsequently delivered her healthy firstborn at full term. Fast forward, she is now a mother of two though her second pregnancy saw a little ‘drama’ with some heavy spotting.

“I felt abnormal.” Yvonne is a young mother of one who is loving her new parenting role.

Use pregnancy test kits. Consult a doctor and have your body checked.

Tell us a Story

And the rest of the pregnancy was everything a mum-to-be could ask for. Yvonne didn’t feel any discomfort and nausea was not even in her dictionary. She ate everything she

wanted and constantly wondered why some expectant mums would develop an aversion to different smells, especially food with fish and garlic. “I thought I was abnormal and I didn’t feel pregnant at all.” It also seemed that she felt bad when people exclaimed, “What, no morning sickness? That’s very lucky!” It seemed like she didn’t get to experience a full pregnancy. But she is thankful and grateful for the smooth pregnancy, “I worked till the day before my scheduled delivery,” she beamed with fond memories. And of course, Alex is happy that he didn’t need to go on food cravings duty to buy different types of foods at ungodly hours.

Y

vonne didn’t know she was pregnant as she had irregular periods. “Frankly, I am very blessed. I didn’t know I was pregnant,” she adds, “We only found out when ‘little pea’ was about three months old”. Her husband, Alex was pleasantly surprised that they are welcoming a baby as he did not suspect that she was expecting at all.

Baby Hygiene Hacks Some tips for you to clean baby MESS and prevent rashes.

D

We have put together some helpful hacks from real parents and Helpling, the leading platform for cleaning services booking in Singapore, on how to prevent rashes and keep your baby’s toys clean and disinfected. Check out the list of common rash causes and hacks.

MAKE YOUR OWN DISINFECTANT AND STAIN REMOVER

Pacifier

Drooling

Messy eater

Pacifier is a common cause of rashes because of the saliva that it collects and it likely occurs around the corner of your infant’s mouth.

Rash around the mouth and on cheeks is common for infants and this is typically caused by salivation left on the skin for extended period of time.

Leftover food from food smears around the mouth and on cheeks may cause a rash to develop, especially if it is not cleaned immediately after a meal.

Hack:

Hack:

Rinse baby’s pacifier in clean water and sterilise it at least once a day.

Wipe your baby’s face using cotton wool with cool clean (boiled) water.

Always use a wet cloth that is non-scratchy and clean baby’s mouth.

Milk monster

bacteria ON ClothING

Toys

Milk residue can stay in the mouth after a feed. This can cause a rash on the cheeks when it gets mixed with saliva. Hack:

Clean baby’s mouth with a clean damp towel after every feed and wipe the face separately. Some mums swear by applying a thin layer of nappy cream to protect the delicate skin.

Infants, babies and even young children develop rashes around their mouths and faces if they rub their faces on the clothes their parents are wearing. Hack:

Always shower and change into clean clothes especially after running errands, work or simple chores. Do not sit on the bed with the pants you wore out.

To disinfect them, place them in a plastic bag and freeze for 24 hours to kill the mites and follow with washing.

For toys that are heavily stained, sprinkle baking soda over stained spots then put them into the washing machine. Then, add in three caps of white vinegar together with detergent into the washing machine.

• TEETHING toys hack

Place toys in a pot of boiling water for about 10 minutes and let them cool off. If they can’t be boiled, clean with detergent and very hot water.

Your child’s favorite toys can carry bacteria after how they have fallen to the gound.

Another method is to combine equal cups of water to equal cups of distilled white vinegar into a spray bottle. This comes in handy when you are out and your child has dropped his favorite toy to the ground. Spray on the dirty spots and leave it for 15 minutes before wiping off the remaining vinegar.

Be kind to clothes, AND kinder to your child’s skin

Did you know?

Clothing and/or clothes detergent can cause skin discomfort and allergic reaction. Washing children’s clothing and blankets in gentle hypoallergenic detergent can help protect delicate skin.

Irritation rash

Choosing the right material for YOUR bÉbÉ.

20 january 2016

D

ressing your baby up can be really fun, especially when you’ve got loads of those adorable onesies, rompers and funky tops. With an array of designs, parents are spoilt for choice now. Beyond the aesthetics of baby wear, the materials have also

entered a war for supremacy. Don’t be fooled by how fabric choices can make a huge difference in your child’s comfort levels or prevent skin conditions. Dress your child right with these teeny weeny bits of helpful tips and their delicate skin will thank you for the pampering love and care!

Allergic contact dermatitis

This rash is caused by allergy to the detergent, softener or dryer sheets used. Typically, this rash does not develop upon immediate contact. The redness and itch may take about a week to set in and usually over multiple exposures.

text Juansa Arissa Cheng

FABRIC WAR

This rash is usually an immediate reaction to fabric such as wool. Like how it starts, this problem is easy to resolve; just take off the piece of clothing and the irritation will disappear fairly quickly.

03

COTTON

SPANDEX

LAYERING WITH MICRO FLEECE

There are loads of fabrics in the market that are made for use in infant apparels. But generally, cotton is the fabric that is most commonly used as it is soft, absorbent and most importantly, gentle to the baby’s delicate skin. There is an organic option too. Spandex or cotton blends are said to provide the ultimate comfort for them.

With the constant movement and wiggling of a newborn, it would be ideal if they were wearing something that is stretchable, such as spandex, as the material can move along with your baby’s movements while keeping them all wrapped up. An example would be tights and baby leg warmers made from this stretchable fabric.

You might have considered that it’s too hot for use in Singapore but a micro fleece is perfect for travelling and use in air-conditioned places. Clothes made from fleece dry quickly and they are warm and fuzzy too, making it the perfect material for a child’s outerwear, or an instant pillow or blanket on-the-go.

Want to know if your child’s rash is caused by detergent allergy?

TIP Prevent your child from catching a cold by changing him out of his sweaty clothes with a dry set before entering an air-conditioned venue.

04

BAMBOO

With the difficulty in keeping a consistent and comfortable body temperature, babies can feel uncomfortable in their clothes too. New to the market, bamboo is an all-natural material that has thermal-regulating abilities, which helps the clothes to adjust to your baby’s temperature. Plus, with its hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial functions, you need not worry about odour, allergies and skin irritations. What’s more, it is the fastest growing amongst the other type of fabrics, even cotton. 05

THE FULL PACKAGE

Check the spot that the clothing doesn’t touch the skin; your baby’s bums where it is protected by the diaper. If there is no rash, then your child’s allergy is not caused by detergent. Also, detergent-related rash are generally more prominent on arms and legs. Note: This doesn’t count if you are using cloth diapers that is washed in the same detergent.

! Protect them from dust mites and other potential irritants by doing your baby’s laundry with the TollyJoy Anti-dust mite Baby Laundry Detergent ($9.50, major department stores, supermarkets and baby specialty stores) or the innovative Pigeon Baby Laundry Detergent ($8.90, www.pigeon.com.sg).

Dress them up with this simple clean cut yet adorable Urban Baby Worth the Wait white onesie ($25.06, www.etsy.com) and add on a pair of Frugi Little Libby Leggings ($26.65, www.welovefrugi.com) to keep their tiny legs covered and warm.

21 january 2016

Wrap your little one after bath with the fluffy white Simply Life Bamboo Towels ($19.95, simplylife.com.sg) that is soft and gentle on the skin. Get the WeeGoAmigo Muslin 10 Pack ($56.48, The Little Linen Company) which you can use as a comforter, burp cloth, bib and even a lightweight summer nappy change.

Do not self-diagnose a rash as it is best to seek professional medical advice, especially if the rash or itching is severe. Do not self-medicate as there could be other drug allergies, or give over-thecounter adult medication.

new beginnings

New Year, New Beginnings Ready to sprint off to a great start in the new academic year?

1 Reassure Your Child The first few days of the new school year can be daunting not just for you but more so for your child, especially for newly enrolled Primary One pupils.

42 january 2016

√ Show interest in how he is coping in his new school environment. √ Ask him names of his friends, teachers, and places he explored, and the food he bought during recess. √ Share with him your schoolgoing experience and your own fears. You have to let him understand that it is normal to feel the way he does. √ Encourage him to continue to be courageous and reaffirm his positive attitude.

2

3

Be Present

Be Exemplary

Plan a routine timetable for your child and guide him in adjusting to new school routine and responsibilities. √ Reiterate the importance of a schedule to help him plan the day. √ Focus on building the rationale of keeping to timetable and punctuality; breakfast, bath, pick-up by school bus, school, dinner and evening walk or play. √ Reduce distractions such as televisions and sibling playing during homework time. √ Guide him in packing his school bag, bringing necessary materials and filing worksheets. √ Accompany him when he is doing his work and support his attempts.

You’ve heard it many times – ‘Monkey see, monkey do’ – and this is one of the most powerful (or destabilising) parenting ‘tool’. You either use it to your advantage or have it used against you. If you want your child to read, demonstrate to them that you read too. Show them the value of reading and the world of knowledge it brings. √ Read with your child. √ Practise with your child to show that learning is lifelong e.g. learning new vocabulary. √ Enthuse your child with interesting stories, activities and family fun time with books. √ Keep abreast of academic developments and trends so that you do not lag behind.

5 Have Fun

4 Don’t Be afraid If you are worried that your Chinese pronunciation, enunciation and stresses are not spot on, you are not alone. With over two decades of journalism and entertainment experience under her belt, ex-TV presenter and celebrity mum, Diana Ser, gathers all her skills in a big cauldron and has recently launched a fully self-funded online edutainment program, ‘Crazy About Chinese’ at www.dianaser. com where she dishes out some advice on how not to be afraid of Chinese – one of her secret weapon is… translation apps! Below are her top picks: √ PLECO: Great for translating English to Chinese, and vice versa. √ WAYGO: Point the camera at the Chinese words, and voila, the English translation appears. For Chinese to English only. √ ITRANSLATE: With audio aid. This is the Champion.

It is important to still incorporate play. If you take away time for relaxation, his toys or hobbies during this initial phase, he may associate school with punishment and even start to resent it. √ Allow time for relaxation and play. √ Praise him for his effort in keeping to play time schedule. √ Listen attentively if he decides to share his views during play. √ Try interesting activities you can engage your child in. Science in Seconds for Kids With over 100 experiments you can do in ten minutes or less, you can put together some quick and simple projects categorised into areas such as gravity, water, and light, and most have just a few steps to follow. Illustrations are simple and each procedure is followed by an explanation of what should have happened and why. Learn to make your own clouds, a rainbow, or a simple sand clock with this book ($19.82, Books Depository). The Map Colouring Book You and your child can colour your way around the world with this big and bold, poster-sized colouring book ($16.21, Books Depository). Set your vacation goals here and learn while you have fun with the striking maps that feature landmarks, animals, artefacts and places of interests. The best part of this book is that it has perforated pages so that the finished artwork can be torn out, framed and hung.

why read with your child? Bond, explore and increase literacy by reading with your child.

R

eading with your child is not just a pre-school activity. As parents may well know, knowing the alphabets does not on its own lead to advanced reading ability. Readers have to recognise the context in which the text is written and the audience which the text is written for, sentence patterns and choice of words so that understanding of the text is possible. Like any other skill, reading requires constant practice. It needs to be frequent. Many parents know well enough that their children do not read. Telling their children to read does not lead to reading. Reading with their children leads to reading. The reason that reading with children leads to reading is not just that reading can be fun and entertaining. It is the interactive aspect of reading together, when the parents start to understand why a child finds a piece of text worth his attention to look at (rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing why the child chooses a piece of text to look at) that reading becomes a bonding activity. It is a meaningful activity for the parent and child.

“Telling your child to read does not lead to reading.

62 January 2016

text Angelina Tang and Juansa Arissa cheng

The teenager is often forgotten or neglected by their parents when it comes to reading. As soon as the young teen passes the PSLE, he is assumed to be ready to read independently. This is a myth. At a time when the teenager is forming a self-image and building self-esteem, and becoming a socially functional young adult, parents play a crucial role in keeping in touch with and understanding that process. Reading with your child (later teenager) allows you to know your child better which will lead you to be

better able to guide him in making life’s important choices. Through reading and then sharing of feelings and perspective, you will know his thoughts and understand them. This is a parent-child (parent-teen) bonding activity as critical as any other.

2

Progress to reading short pieces with pictures that he can relate to

The Golden Rule of Reading with your child The golden rule of reading with your child requires that he selects a piece of text that he is interested in to share with you. Interest is paramount. Do not judge. No matter how similar the child is to the parent, he is a unique individual exploring who he is and may not hold the same interest as the parent. The piece of text he has chosen to share with you is an expression of that exploration. It is more interesting and beneficial to the parent and child for mum and dad to understand why he has chosen that piece of text than to judge him. Alternatively, take turns to choose texts. If you have no idea on how to select texts, start with newspaper clippings. Go for the ones that are interesting, especially those with interesting headlines or different cultural angles. This allows exploration and discussion. Check out some of the strategies we have for you below. 1

Tip: Use the read, ask and answer technique For short pieces, read with your child and ask him questions - gist, his feelings or thoughts. Allow him to answer openly with imagination. If the piece is a narrative text, ask him what may happen next – all these will help to hone his prediction skills.

3

Include reads that you like or values that you would like your child to learn

Try reading headlines with interesting news or perspectives

Tip: Use the read, look and explain technique For headlines that your child may not understand immediately, use scaffolding techniques to arouse interest. Read the headlines, point to the keywords and pictures and explain the relationship, the link or the connotations.

Tip: Use the read, ask and share technique For more personal pieces, read your child your favourite poem, quote, extract from a book or even the week’s news article. Ask him why he thinks you like it and then affirm his contribution and share yours.

Hurts English duo Hurts’ third album, Surrender, cleverly retains the group’s identity with its synth-pop sound and Theo Hutchcraft’s intimate vocals, but adds a dash of ebullience that was absent from their previous offerings. Get ready to be pleased by the likes of ‘Some Kind of Heaven’ and ‘Lights’. An album so good, it hurts. www.informationhurts.com

20 Feb 1947: First Earthly creatures sent into space – fruit flies.

4 Oct 1957: First artificial earth satellite – Sputnik I.

BLAST OFF!

While we sure do love our planet Earth, humans have always been curious about outer space and possible life forms in other parts of our magnificent universe. Let’s find out about some space explorations humans have planned and executed over the years!

The United States launched the V-2 rocket which carried with it fruit flies to explore the effects of radiation exposure at high altitudes. The rocket reached an amazing 109km in altitude in three minutes and ten seconds! Upon their return back to earth, scientists found that the fruit flies were still alive.

Able and Baker are both monkeys that were the first animals to have survived a space flight! Other primates who had reached space in earlier years had sadly not been able to survive their journeys. Their flight was 16 minutes long and they were weightless for nine minutes!

28 May 1959: First animals to return to Earth safely after space flight – Monkeys Able and Baker.

12 Apr 1961: First human spaceflight – Yuri Gagarin.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human to be launched into outer space, and also the first to orbit Earth! After a host of animals were sent by various countries, it was time for humans to take the flight. Yuri’s Vostok spacecraft completed one orbit of the Earth successfully on 12 Apr 1961.

Apollo 11 was responsible for landing the first humans on the moon – Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The event was a momentous one for everyone around the world. Armstrong described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”.

20 Jul 1969: First moon landing - Apollo 11.

3 Feb 1995: First woman pilot of a space shuttle – Eileen Marie Collins.

The Discovery space shuttle that Eileen piloted also made history in other ways – it was also the first flight in a new Russian – American space programme! One of the crew members, Bernard A. Harris, Jr., also became the first African-American to walk in space. Eileen later became the first woman space shuttle commander in 1999. What is a space station? A space station is used as a place where space research is conducted. It is built to be able to support a crew of people on board and stay in space for an extended period of time. It also allows other space crafts to dock and to send supplies or more human support whenever needed. What is space like? Vacuum: There is almost no air where the space stations are usually found, so astronauts need to wear special suits if they have to step outside of the space station. However, the space stations themselves contain stored air that is enough for the astronauts’ survival. Temperature: The temperature of the space stations can fluctuate a lot and very quickly as heat from the sun travels to the space stations by radiation! But the space stations are equipped to deal with this so that the astronauts can feel comfortable. Weightless: If you’ve seen pictures of astronauts in space stations, you’d see that they are mostly floating about as if by magic! This is because in space, the effect of the gravity we feel here on Earth is non-existent.
