B

each holidays are amazing. They deliver all the ingredients for a magical stay with the kids: pristine ocean water, a plethora of activities, and countless inland fun! What we love about beach holidays is that it gives children the freedom to discover nature up-close and personal. Simply put, beaches are built-in playgrounds for children to explore our wonderful world.

Build your child’s vocabulary: Identify sail boats, snorkelers and snorkel gear, shells, waves, fish, parasails, blimps, airplanes, seagulls, palm trees, and seaweed. Go on an active adventure: Take a walk, climb on rocks, splash in the waves, jump off sand dunes. Help your future scientist or artist to see the beauty and wonder of nature: Watch the tide come in or out. Catch the sunrise or sunset. See the wind rattle the palm tree branches.

Apart from all the fun and games, beach vacations also teach children about their surroundings. For instance, the beach provides a unique environment for kids to experience things that they are not exposed to on a daily basis, such as sea shells, reefs, various rocks, sand play and even sometimes to tiny fishes and crabs. To make the most of your family time in the water, sun and sand, and tying in with our travel and beach vacation fashion spread, here are our top picks of fun and free activities you can indulge in with the kiddos while at the beach.

Beach Safety While beach vacations are perfect for unwinding and relaxing, it is also just as important for you to set out some rules for the kids and keep a close watch on them, especially when you’re overseas and are unsure of the beaches there.

32 JUNe 2015

Engage in imaginative play: Try cooking, baking, and creating with sand. You’re familiar with mud pies, right? Try sand pies – sand resembles brown sugar, after all!

Be cautious in unfamiliar waters. Always investigate the place you’re entering first. Ask locals, scope out potential problems and stay out if you’re unsure. If it’s a hot day and you see a delightful-looking area of water that is free of other swimmers, assume there is a reason for it. There might be a riptide, polluted waters, or it might be off-limits for some other reason you are not aware of.

t was 3.45pm when I reached Mudian Crafted’s spacious two-storey showroom. Mudian is a home-grown Singaporean brand that produces beautiful kitchens and wardrobes synonymous with fine craftsmanship and exceptional quality. I was immediately drawn to their kitchen showcases, which feature ideas of how a kitchen can be put together in contemporary Singapore, and knew that this was a perfect setting for the interview and photo shoot. Fifteen minutes later, the door to the showroom opened and in walked Tampines GRC Member of Parliament Baey Yam Keng. As a politician, he is no stranger to public scrutiny, and it’s not hard to see why he’s such a popular figure. At 44, he is charismatic, good-looking and down-to-earth. He enjoys interacting with his constituents, he understands the people, and the people (be they 16 or 66!) – they love him.

What is your parenting philosophy?

I believe in instilling positive values and certain discipline in my children, such as manners at the table, and how they greet the elders. These are small things, but I feel that it’s important that they have this sense of responsibility. In a way, it balances with my wife’s way of handling the kids. Generally, I’m the more serious one, as compared to my wife. She’s a bit more flexible, but we always try to come to a middle ground when we do not see eye to eye on our parenting style.

Why is it important for families to have at least one meal together? Spending quality time together is important and, for our family, dinner time is the most natural time for it to happen. That’s when all of us feel relaxed, giving us a chance to connect with each other, whether there’s conversation or not. And, of course, we get to pass down traditions related to food, enjoy the intimacy of sharing a meal, and create moments that will become memories for our kids.

So

does your family think you’re a good cook?

That’s because I’m the only one who does the cooking in the house (although I cook very rarely). I used to watch my mother in the kitchen when I was young. So, I would say I can whip up something decent, at least.

57 JUNe 2015

He revels in his role as a politician, but nothing can be compared with his favourite role of all time – being a proud father to his three children. And despite his busy schedule, he tries to be home at least four times a week for dinner, and reserves Friday nights for dates with his wife. “Great relationships usually have partners committed to lifelong learning and growth, so always work on the husband-wife relationship first. When a romantic partner loves us unconditionally, the happiness and security that love brings can spill over, to our children’s benefit,” he shares.

Catalunya / 82 Collyer Quay, The Fullerton Pavilion, Singapore 049327 Specialising in contemporary Spanish cuisine, Catalunya prepares its own unique take on traditional dishes like the paella and Spanish tortilla. Thanks to a talented team of chefs who hail from world renowned restaurants, you can expect to find only the best here. Start off with the signature Bikini ($20), a ham, cheese and truffle sandwich tapa, before moving on to their Mediterranean Red Prawn ($85), another signature dish that is prepared using freshly imported prawns. Then, end the meal on a sweet note with their Catalunya Ice Cream ($12), a Catalan version of crème brulee that really hits the spot.

Boca / 6 Bukit Pasoh Rd, Singapore 089820 To be honest, we had no idea what Portuguese cuisine entailed apart from their famed egg tarts. A trip down to Boca solved that problem for us, as it is the first restaurant in Singapore to offer authentic Portuguese food. For a taste of everyday Portugal, we recommend their Cod Porridge ($28), a comforting dish that brings out the essence of Bacalhau, a dried and salted cod ingredient ubiquitous in Portuguese cuisine. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can sample their ‘Lagareiro’ Octopus ($42), a dish that features a grilled octopus leg, lying prettily atop a bed of baked potatoes, spinach and olives.

• Dinner is usually served late in Portugal, so don’t be surprised to find that restaurants there typically open around 7pm! • The locals love their fish and Portugal has the highest seafood consumption per capita in Europe.

Buongiorno, Italy! Capri Trattoria & Pizzeria / 3 Binjai Park, Singapore 589819 Nestled amidst rows of eateries at Binjai Park, Capri Trattoria & Pizzeria is a quaint and charming little restaurant that offers homely Italian fare. For those who’ve been to the southern region of Italy (and even for those who haven’t), you’ll be pleased to know that you can find a taste of it here. Must-tries include the hand-made Pasta Riccia All’nduja ($25++), and the antipasti Tagliere Casereccio ($28++), a platter full of home-cured cold cuts.

Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited next installment of his ground-breaking Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World. June 11, 2015 – the release date for Jurassic World – can’t get here soon enough. We’re practically dying with anticipation, but until that date comes, we’re holding ourselves over with previews, clips and trailers. Are you counting down the days like we are? Here’s why Jurassic World is a must-watch! • Expect new park attractions! Jurassic World will be a real running theme park, complete with a monorail, shops, rides, and shows. To get there, you have to take a high speed shuttle boat from Florida. Inside the park, there are a multitude of activities, including a Dino petting zoo and a Hologram info centre where you can learn about the methods they are using to create dinosaurs. One of the rides is called a “Gyrosphere,” in which you can get in and ride around in the wild to get up close to the dinos. • Take actor Chris Pratt, add dinosaurs, and boom! We’re in. Chris’ skin-tight shirt should be enough to make you swoon, no?

Soppy

New Old-Fashioned Parenting By Liat Hughes Joshi This book touches on the subject of whether we’re letting our little ones take control. While it is no longer necessary to insist on standing when an adult enters the room, or to leave children to roam unsupervised for entire days for instance, Liat does feel that insistence on learning everyday manners, helping around the house, the gradual development of independence and instilling that they cannot always have everything they want, are important.

By Philippa Rice This book is a collection of comics and illustrations based on reallife moments with the author’s boyfriend. Philippa pours enough of her heart into this book that the love story becomes tangible to the reader. If you like sweet, sappy, and dripping with cuteness stories, then you’ll enjoy this collection of sketches. This book is a light read and would also make a great gift for the sweetheart in your life.

Thrive By Arianna Huffington In this deeply personal book, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case for the need to redefine what it means to be successful in today’s world. She talks candidly about her own challenges with managing time and prioritising the demands of a career and raising two daughters – of juggling business deadlines and family crises, a harried dance that led to her collapse and to her “aha moment.”

Rainie Yang

Even in the midst of drama roles and concert tours, Rainie had been diligently working on her ninth album and putting out MVs track by track. Through the MVs, we get to see a dichotomy of emotions that shows the softer side of her.

69 JUNe 2015

She has nine songs written for her next album, titled Honeymoon. According to Del Rey, “some of the production is perfect; I’m looking for a few more songs to tie everything together.” And thanks to her cinematic new song, she’s also in the thick of awards season. Big Eyes, which Del Rey wrote with Daniel Heath, received a Golden Globe nomination.

71 JUNe 2015

Whether your child is at the beach or at the park, sunscreen is a must. Try this water-resistant sunscreen on your little ones. The fragrance- and paraben-free formula will guard active tots from harmful rays. It also absorbs quickly, making sunscreen application faster for kids, and a lot less stressful for you. What’s more, this sunscreen uses glycerine, panthenol, aloe vera and vitamin E to moisturise and protect your child’s delicate skin from the harsh sun. We love how this easy-to-use pump dispenser lotion provides an optimal and consistent amount of product for reliable protection for sensitive skin.

Did you know that minions have been on this planet far longer than we have? Meet Stuart, Kevin and Bob as they embark on a journey for their new master. The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters.

4

Finding a master was easy, but keeping a master – that’s where things got tricky! Nonetheless, they kept on looking. However, continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters – from T. Rex to Napoleon – the minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

Need help taking over the world?

Meet the

MINIONS.

What happens when they have no master to serve?

Eventually, one minion stepped forward!

Without a master, the minions had no purpose. They became aimless. If this went on much longer, they would surely perish!

Kevin felt pride – he was going to be the one to find his tribe the biggest, baddest villain to serve. Stuart felt hungry (mostly!). He was going to be the one to eat his banana. What’s new, right? For Bob, he was frightened of the journey ahead.

So, what’s the plan? Kevin, alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob, ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Are you ready to help them take over the world?

e Meet Th

Germ Gang By Dr. Scott Poh

Our bodies are pretty amazing. Day after day, they work hard, digesting food, pumping blood and oxygen, sending signals from our brains and much more. But there is a group of tiny invaders that can make our bodies sick – they’re called germs.

Some of you may think that germs are bugs or other gross stuff. Actually, germs are tiny organisms that can cause disease. Germs are so small and sneaky that they creep into our bodies without being noticed. In fact, germs are so tiny that you need to use a microscope to see them.

What types of germs are there? Germs are found all over the world, in all kinds of places. The four major types of germs are: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. They can invade plants, animals and people, and sometimes they make us sick.

When they get in our bodies, we don’t know what hit us until we have symptoms that show we’ve been attacked!

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nut rients from their environments in order

8

to live. In some cases, that environment is a human body. However, not all bac teria are bad. Some bac teria are good for our bodies. They help keep things in balance.

Once germs invade our bodies, they snuggle in for a long stay. They gobble up nutrients and energy, and can produce toxins, which are proteins that are like poisons. Those toxins can cause symptoms of common infections, like fevers, sniffles, rashes, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Fungi are multi-celled (made of many cells), plant-like organisms. Unlike other plants, fungi cannot make their own food from soil, water and air. Instead, fungi get their nutrition from plants, people

and animals. They love to live in damp, warm places, and many fungi are not dangerous in healthy people. An example of something caused by fungi is athlete’s foot – an itchy rash that teens and adults sometimes get between their toes.

How do doctors figure out what germs are doing? They take a closer look. By looking at samples of blood, urine, and other fluids under a microscope or sending these samples to a laboratory for more tests, doctors can tell which germs are living in your body and how they are making you sick.

disease: a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury symptoms: a physical or mental feature, which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient nutrients: a substance that provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life and for growth

Protozoa are one-

cell organisms that love moisture and often spread diseases through water. Some protozoa cause intestinal infections that lead to diarrhoea, nausea and belly pain.

You can make a ‘trail’ in the air too. When you breathe out on a cold day, you can see a little cloud. This is warm air from your body meeting cold air outside.

3

The fumes that come out of a plane contain some water. But they also contain an invisible polluting gas that is very bad for our planet.

Sometimes, planes do not leave trails in the sky. When the air is very dry, the crystals melt quickly in the air before we can see them.

Maybe the trails are used fuel coming out of the plane?

So the white trails are exhaust fumes?

trails: a mark or a series of signs or objects left behind by the passage of someone or something fuel: material such as coal, gas, or oil that is burned to produce heat or power fumes: an amount of gas or vapour that smells strongly or is dangerous to inhale

So the white trails are made of ice?

invisible: unable to be seen polluting: contaminating (water, the air, etc.) with harmful or poisonous substances

Animal Planet For some animal fathers, “daddy duty” is a big deal. Let’s meet dads that devote a lot of time to their little ones.

Who's The

Best Dad?

Stand up for the Emperor Penguins Winter in Antarctica is bitterly cold. That's when a mother emperor penguin lays her single egg. Then, off she goes to the ocean to hunt for food. Papa Penguin stays behind, balancing the egg on his feet and keeping it warm under his belly feathers. He huddles with the other dads as the wind howls. He can't let the egg touch the ice, or it will freeze.

All by himself, a father emu (say EEmoo) builds a nest. Mum lays the eggs, and then Dad sits down on the nest and hardly moves until the eggs hatch. Dad doesn’t eat for the whole twomonth wait. Several times a day, he carefully turns the eggs to keep all sides warm. There are usually around 11 eggs, but sometimes as many as 20.

For four months in all, Papa eats nothing but snow. When the egg hatches, he tucks the chick under his feathers and feeds it a milk-like liquid from his throat. Mama returns soon after that, bringing fishy food for the baby. Then, finally, it's Papa's turn to go and get a hard-earned meal.

When the chicks pop out, Dad’s job is far from done. He stays with them for at least another six months while they grow to full size. He teaches them how to find food, and he protects them from predators such as foxes, dingoes, and eagles.

Horsy fishes that are Seahorses You might guess that a seahorse dad was a mum if you didn’t know this secret: Seahorse eggs stay with the dads – instead of the mums – to develop! With a special tube, a mother seahorse places her eggs in a pouch on Dad’s belly. This expandable pouch might hold from 50 eggs up to 1,000 or more (depending on the species). Safe in Dad’s pouch, the eggs develop until hatching time. Then, the seahorse dad squeezes the babies out. The tiny new seahorses swim off and find seaweed to cling to using their tails. Dad’s job is done – until he’s ready to raise his next batch of babies.

Let’s jaw about Jawfish W

h!

After a mother jawfish lays a clutch of eggs, the father opens wide and, believe it or not, slurps them all up! Don’t worry – this good dad doesn’t swallow them. Instead, his mouth is a perfect place for the eggs to stay until they’re ready to hatch.

d Flas or

huddles: crowd together; nestle closely

From time to time, he spits the eggs out and then sucks them back in. This helps them get the oxygen they need. Safe in Daddy’s jaws, they’re hidden from predators and have a much better chance of surviving long enough to grow up.

dingoes: a wild or half-domesticated dog with a sandy-coloured coat, found in Australia expandable: become or make larger or more extensive slurps: drink or eat (something) with a loud sucking noise deadbeat: an idle, feckless, or disreputable person assassin: a person who murders an important person for political or religious reasons

The worst dad award goes to… the grizzly bear!

?

Did You Know

Deadbeat dads who desert their young are bad enough, but the grizzly bear actually kills cubs. To be fair, the grizzly is an equalopportunity assassin. He goes after any cubs in his home range, an area as big as 3,100 square kilometres, where half-dozen of the females could be rearing young.
