Platonic Academy The Fourth Dimensional Space Geometry Studies PennDesign|Jan. 2016|Algorithmic Design Modeling, Rendering, Scripting, Programming

The project is located in the ancient historical relics of the ancient Plato Academy. Plato was one of the most outstanding philosopher in human history. According to the Allegory of the Cave theory, one most the most famous theories from Plato, we try to use light as the form of good. In the atrium, the light can come down and reflect to the bottom part, which represents the light and the cave. Also, we tried to use the Perfect Shape from Plato's theory system and moreover, we did a research on the higher dimensional space Platonic Geometry. You can find a mathmatical research essay about how to calculate the coordinates of Platonic Geometries in fourth dimensional space and videos at jieming.penn.design.

PennDesign Arch 704 Advanced Design Research Studio Global Institute for Natural Advancement Spring 2016 University of Pennsylvania Dept of Architecture instructors: Cecil Balmond Ezio Blasetti teaching assistant: Shengkan Zhang design team: Jieming Jin Wei Chen

Sites: The Institute operates through a network of locations around the globe. Several new sites have been acquired for its expansion, each with a respective area of focus: • One of the sites is located in close proximity to the archaeological site of the Platonic Academy in the center of Athens. In collaboration with the modern Academy of Athens, the new center will pursuit the Advancement of Formal Studies (Logic, Mathematics, Systems Theory). In addition, the center will host an annual interdisciplinary symposium, which will celebrate advancements in the different scientific fields. • On October 21st of 1993, the Congress of the United States of America canceled one of the most ambitious scientific projects of the time, namely the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) after $2 billion had been spent. The remaining infrastructure of the project (also nicknamed Desertron) and its future expansion will serve as the center for the Advancement of Natural Studies (Physics, Chemistry, Geology etc). • The center for Advancement of Space and Life Sciences will be located in the expansion of the building complex adjacent to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The Observatory houses the largest and most sensitive radio telescope, which was built more than half a century ago. It is still operational and sponsored by the National Science Foundation. • The Hashima Island commonly called Gunkanjima is an abandoned island in Nagasaki Prefecture in southern Japan. The island was known for its undersea coal-mines and it operated as an industrial site from 1887 to 1974. It was formally approved as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2015. The site will be re-appropriated as the center for the Advancement of Applied Sciences. • The Institute has an extensive on-line archive destined for the collaboration and exchange of its resident scholars and faculty. The Archive provides open source access to all of its entries as well as a medium for meta-data extraction and processing. The data is physically stored in collaboration with corporate and governmental data centers in various locations around the world. The primary design challenge in the manifestation of the archive is its organization and virtual interface access.

Pencil Tower PennDesign|Sep. 2015|MAYA Modeling, Rendering,Section,Technique Research

Recently, with the blooming population of New York City, as well as the increasing number of immigrants, the city is forced by the aging issue. We can’t just make the problem ended up with immigrating these group of people to Los Angeles where seems to make them enjoy sunshine, beach and pretty weather. The aged have their friends in New York. Life is tough without social relations. Thus it’s more realistic to provide housing inside Manhattan, the aged could retiring in the city. For sake of the aged people’s limited abilities to move, the tower would provide clinics, gym, haute couture, shopping mall, museum, and theater, etc. In addition, the tower would have spaces function as hotels in case the aged people’s family or friends want to live together with them, also provide space as volunteer center to arrange the volunteers helping the living of the old and studios, if they have their career to achieve.

Cheonggyecheon Climate Generator -Seoul Biennale 2017 PennDesign|Sep. 2016-Present|MAYA Modeling, Rendering, Drawing

Cheonggyecheon, a typical tourism city in Seoul. It derived from the local industrial economic structure, and gradually changed into tourism. The water in Cheonggyecheon River is pumped in. Most of the salesmen are Chinese speaking Korean and pretend to be Korean to sell souvenirs. For decades, the city lives in the confliction between the local context and the benefits from the tourist. Thus, I designed this climate lab. It can change the weather to be more ceremonial, or exaggerate the weather. To reshape and generate new climate, like rainbow everyday, it can attract more tourists and bring benefits for local people.

E-Motion PennDesign|Sep. 2015| Brain Scanner+Arduino+Grasshopper Video : http://jinjieming.penn.design/emotion/

No one can live alone in this world; we constantly interact with one another and sometime in our lives, we wonder what the other person is feeling and what kind of emotion the person is going through. Can an individual experi- ence another individual’s emotion? The project ‘E-motion’ (experiencing emotion through motion) deals with one person understanding one other person’s mind-state. By translating the data of mind-state into a physical form, which alters, depends on the data, two people can share the experience without expressing it directly.

People who live in the city come and go to the market place everyday for food purposes. After the rush hours, normally happened in the afternoon, the market place is just like a smaller scaled zombie city, empty and gloomy. Sadly, for many poor families who do their business here, the parent cannot even provide their children a neat place to learn, to read, to sleep. With drity water on the ground, stink smell in the air, it is not hard to imagine how uncomfortable this environment is for the kids who live there with their parents to study. Comparing with the students living in the city, the market-kids do not have any good condition to study hard. If they keep studying in such an environment that not suitable for studying, how could they possibly get rid of the poverty, be one of the wealthy people and enter a higher class of society? This competition aims at a normal market place located in one of the refugee campion in Berlin. We took advantages of the exsisting steel-frame market but added the different modules for both living, studying and selling activities. By using the gearing system in the rush hour, the module can be lifted over head to create public space for selling food and also keep the moisture away. The child can learn in the module in a relatively separated condition. Every single child, apart from what family they were born and what parental support they can get, they deserve the same opportunity to enjoy their childrenhood, and the same opportunity to study to change their future. We wish by doing so, we can bring a better world for the children, and dignities.

Contemplation Box Student Competition, Team Leader with Ruige(HKU),Shuo(Penn) PennDesign|Apr. 2017

The Contemplation Box is in Nagano, Japan, surround by a forest. Our team wants to create a place that is relatively isolated from the civilization of the society. People can come in, feel a new spatial experience. They can make a prayer, calm down and concentrate on their inner hearts. Their sins get washed away, and their spirits get refreshed and purified. Thus, we hope people can get prepared before they came back to their normal life.

The project is consisted by five cells. Three are single-person sized, individual contemplation place while the other two serve as group activities like mental therapy and anonymous group meeting. One of the design proposals we did was to work with the sunlight. We create the moonroofs on the roof and at the public atrium so during the daytime the sunlight will come in through the moonroof to create a heavenly atmosphere. When it’s night, the people can see the stars in the sky, feel the quiet of the forest, the sound of the stream, and sense the feeling of nature. We also lifted the whole architecture up for four meters to make it closer to the sky for better dissolving in the context of canopies. People on the ground level will gain curiosities and be attracted to the internal floor. They will unconsciously involve into the new space, just like the architecture dissolves in the forest quite seamlessly.

Parametric Housing Zhengzhou Univ.|Aug. 2013|Algorithmic Design Modeling, Rendering,Scripting,Programming

This project is located in a rural area in Henan Province, China. The existing houses can no longer fulfill the residents' expectation and requirements since the houses were built more than sixty years ago and were in poor quality. Based on the research I did, I generated a prototype in Python. The program can give outputs according to the variables, such as the location of each house, the owner's generation in their family, and their main economic structure as farming or light industry. The results being given as prototypes, the whole village got renovated.
