Since people waste a lot resources for Christmas

celebration, this set of posters aims to remind

Individual project

people to be eco-friendly at Christmas time in the theme of X’mas tree.

1

Can you send it back home?

PROCESS

Tree in the forest and at home were chosen to create contrast.

I teared the wrapping paper from x’mas gift I received to create the frame.

DESIGN IDEA When a X’mas tree is cut down from forest, it cannot be returned to the forest after celebration which like teared paper can never be combined without any trace. In addition, the tree was surrounded by gift wrapping paper in red to emphasize how unenvironmentally friendly Christmas is.

2

Trees cut down for paper

PROCESS

Magazine pages in navy were teared into pieces and glued to form the sky.

DESIGN IDEA This poster was created by tearing, creasing and cutting papers from magazine with photo retouching. X’mas tree and magazine will both be outdated after a period of time. The actions of tearing and crumpling papers are similar to how people destroy the environment.

Magazine pages of green plants were cut into triangles and glued to form the tree.

White magazine pages are crumpled to create the form snow.

3

What is missing?

DESIGN IDEA Some people would buy real trees for Christmas decoration. Whatever how long would the X’mas tree last for celebration, the tree had been cut off from the forest and it did affect the nature ecology. This poster suggested a more eco-friendly way of Christmas celebration. Even X’mas tree is missing, people can still celebrate Christmas happily. The “not found” icon emphasized the worst scenario to our mother nature when tree could not be found at the end.

The children with smile surrounding represents the atmosphere of Christmas is joyful with friends and family.

REFLECTION I felt very confuse what should I put in the posters in the beginning. I then tried different approaches to make X’mas tree and do research on issues related X’mas. This set of posters were designed with meanings behind. I had learnt how to deliver a content in different forms. Also, always keep design simple and never add something meaningless in the design to make the layout full.

A cut out X’mas tree silhouette from red paper represented missing X’mas tree.

I used drop shadow for the first version. The feeling of missing is not strong enough.

objective As Shek Kip Mei Market will be rebuilt soon, this book aims to record the unique part of it and to introduce the culture to readers in a more attractive and fun way.

Pop up Illustration

DESIGN IDEA The cube style pop-up can be opened up by the readers to explore the internal structure and details of the stores in order to enhance their understanding to these kinds of rare and traditional places in Hong Kong, which, also match and correspond to the title of our book.

P RO C E S S

Site Visit Visited Shek Kip Mei Market to take photos and interviewed with different stores owner to know the daily operation.

Sketches Idea development of book content and pop up style through sketching.

Style In the first try, I drawn the illustrations with water colour. Although it looked nice, it was time consuming and difficult to control the consistency of colour.

Computer Graphics The style of the book is decided to show realistic style through illustrations. My drawing were based on the reference photos taken during site visit in different perspectives of the stores. After finish drawing the outlines, I passed it to my teammates to colour it.

Cover Design

DESIGN IDEA I used perspective to match the cube pop up of the theme. Shoe Shop can represent Shek Kip Mei Market so it is chosen to be shown on the cover. The other shops’ names and elements are put at the back as pattern. The title is designed by my teammates which is based on an unique Chinese font BeiWei that usually seen in Hong Kong shop signs.

P R O CE S S I had designed different versions of cover. The final idea was chosen and revised to be the book cover.

Title Font Redesign

Development of the cover in final version

REFLECTION This is the first time to work with a real client in a team and the first try to create a pop up book from research to execution based on many constraints. The idea is modified many times to come up with the final product. It is a good chance to practice how to work with teammates as well as to know myself better what I am good and weak at as to prepare myself better in the future.

typographic treatments is designed to represent the organisation.

LET TER H E A D The pattern is a combination of different kinds of popular stationery. The letterhead acts as a wrapping paper at the same time.

Development of letterhead

E NV EL OP E Apply fill in the blank style which is same as the logo of the brand.

The blank in first version is a pencil shape but when the name is too long will be not enough to write.

BUSINESS CARD The business card works as a bookmark at the same time.

The first version is a bookmark with string but it is not convenient to distribute with a string.

P E N TE S T I N G PA P E R With the outline of some graphics, people can bring it home after they tried different pens and inspires them how to use the pen.

Tail was cut

DESIGN IDEA The letter “Q” looks like a mice. The mice trap will cut the mice’s tail so I came up with this idea. Red color represents the bleeding tail when it was cut and the chopper is the sharpest knief. Sketches

2 Dot

DESIGN IDEA The first thing came up to my mind when I saw the word “dot” was the dot art work by Yayoi Kusama. Different size of dots were arranged to create space. “i” is a combination of a circle and a rectangle which are geometric elements that match with Century Gothic typeface.

DESIGN IDEA I created the flow of the book with some places. Different editorial styles were applied in the book. Navy and orange are chosen as the only colours used to increase the unity. This is a good practice on editorial design which I am relatively weak at.

people to buy the products.

Original Packaging

EDO San

DESIGN IDEA The original design cannot emphasize the selling point, crispy and smell good. It is not attractive and similar to many biscuit packaging. A mascot, EDO San, is designed for EDO biscuit series. EDO biscuit is a japanese style biscuit so the mascot with its name “San” means “Mr.” in japanese is named. The character is applied to the packaging while more eye-catching colors are used.

People love to use stickers to decribe their feeling when they are chatting with friends using mobile apps. This set of stickers are designed to let people show their emotion.

DESIGN IDEA The character is named Meatti because she is fat and has a round face. The emotions on her face is come from my daily life as I sometimes cannot find a suitable emoji or sticker to describe my feeling. I designed a digital version for online message as well as a set of stickers for sticking on my schedule and diary to express my emotions.

A black and white version was designed first but I though it cannot strongly present the feelings.
