P R O J E C T P R O P O S A L Produce 6 illustrations in response to standalone stories, taken from the podcast ‘Criminal’. The images will aim to encourage people to listen to the podcast and will act as incentives for people to donate to the podcast network Radiotopia through the use of merchandise. The main intention of the illustrations is to shine light on the subject matter/stories told. The illustrations should hint at elements of the stories, giving clues to the viewer and intriguing them so that they want to know more. The audience is primarily socially aware individuals who regularly use the internet. It is perhaps aimed at people with an interest in true crime and podcasts but the advertising campaign will be aimed at a much wider audience.

I N I T I A L I D E A S I listened to the episodes of my chosen stories while producing quick, intuitive sketches which I later redrew to refine them. I wanted to pick out the most visually interesting elements of the stories, which were key to the plots. I mainly used pencil but also used coloured pencils to test out colour palettes.

D E V E L O P M E N T S I produced compositional roughs but found that it would be much easier to play around with c o m p o s i t i o n d i g i t a l l y. I produced the various elements of each piece separately using analogue media such as gouache, pencils and ink pen and then scanned them into Photoshop to refine them, add and alter colours. This process enabled me to produce a range of tests which I could then evaluate the success of. I produced a range of different compositions which I then received feedback on to gain an outside perspective. This helped me to decide upon my final outcomes.

O U T C O M E S I aimed to produce illustrations that aptly represent the stories and intrigue the viewer and I feel t h a t I ’ v e a c h i e v e d t h i s . Ta k i n g plot points from the stories and translating them into visual symbols has enabled me to do this, Using a combination of vignette images and self-contained scenes adds a surreality to my outcomes. The square format and limited colour palettes unite my illustrations as a set.

A P P L I C A T I O N S I have applied my illustrations to merchandise and advertisements in the form of billboards and social media. The main intention of my applications is to draw attention to the podcast and therefore bring light to the individual stories. I also wanted to produce merchandise in order to raise money for the independent podcast network to enable them to tell more stories. I have tried to consider the suitability of each format and bear in mind the sensitive subject matter so as not to exploit it.
