Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution
STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I intend to produce abstracted narratives in response to 6 episodes of the podcast ‘Criminal’ with an editorial approach. I want to represent the standalone stories of the episodes in single images, with the aim to both entice people to listen to the podcast, and give exposure to the real, and often unresolved, criminal cases. I want to use my personal interest in podcasts to inform my work, as well as consider how this could benefit the podcast creators and the subjects of the stories. I intend my work to leave some things left unsaid in order to intrigue the viewers and want them to listen to the stories for further information. ‘Criminal’ is part of the independent podcast network, Radiotopia, which is largely supported by sponsors, grants, and contributions from listeners. I plan to use this support to the advantage of the show by producing images that act as incentives for listeners to donate to the podcast by applying them to products/merchandise. ‘

GENERAL THEMES: • Crime • The impact and exposure that can be given to a subject through podcasting
SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: • The subjects of various crimes, some serious, some more lighthearted • Theft, abortion, murder, body snatching (among others) • The effects//aftermath of a crime
PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs? SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: • Narratives with an abstracted, editorial approach • Merchandising
AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: • Podcast listeners (predominantly aged 18-34) • Socially aware individuals • Individuals interested in true crime - fans of Making A Murderer and Serial • Internet users - social media advertisement
PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: I plan to make largely line-based images, using Photoshop to refine them. I’d like to create a range of merchandise to represent and promote the podcast, being sensitive to the subject matter. Bearing in mind that the podcast is marketed online, I plan to utilise the digital format by producing social media advertisements to grab attention, as well as other, physical methods of advertisement such as billboards.
CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution.
