Rationale I want to produce work that speaks to people, that is sympathetic and evokes a response, whether that is emotional or humorous. I aim to create work that is a personal interpretation of other people’s words or content, drawing on a range of media sources. I also aim to explore abstraction and ambiguity and consider how well this can communicate to an audience.

Themes / Subjects Books, podcasts, music, films. Narratives and storytelling through ambiguity.

Products / Methods of Distribution Intended uses: book covers, album/singles covers, (gig) posters, zines, magazines, editorial images. Products: Screenprints/digital prints, books Distribution: Portfolio and website, online shop

Brief 1: So Young

Deadl ine

19/11/17

Rationale: Given my interest in music, this is an ideal brief. I wanted to challenge myself to produce a portrait that also conveyed the tone of the music/band.

Brief 2: Batsford Prize

Deadl ine

28/3/18

Rationale: Such an open brief, the theme was ‘Craving Colour’, it gave me the opportunity to approach it quite personally and consider which medium is most appropriate to my practice.

Brief 3: Hookworms

Deadl ine

23/2/18

Rationale: A live brief opportunity to produce work for a local band and sell it. Again, a music based brief that I felt fits in with my interests and practice and allowed me to experiment as the brief was so open. Also, good practice in producing a poster and working with type/layout.

Brief 4: The Mountain Goats zine

Deadli ne

20/3/18

Rationale: Zine submission through a Facebook fan group. A chance to get involved with a community of sorts and showcase my work in a different way. Another music inspired piece of work.

Brief 5: Animal Farm

Deadli ne

6/3/18

Rationale: Interpreting and portraying the themes of a book, forcing me to consider visual communication, type, layout, and the audience.

Brief 6: Narratives (personal project)

Deadli ne

17/5/18

Rationale: Continuing in being influenced by my interests, I wanted to produce a series of illustrations that represented various forms of media e.g. books, films, music, etc and incorporated text. Giving me the opportunity to explore ambiguity and narrative through the juxtaposition of text and imagery.

Brief 7: (self initiated) Finland editorial

Deadli ne

Rationale: An article that captured my attention and I thought it would be fun to illustrate! A further example of interpreting someone else’s words.

Brief 8: Peter and Paul

Deadli ne

23/4/18

Rationale: A live brief opportunity to produce work for the new university build. To give me experience of working with a design studio.

Brief 9: Daft Body (personal project)

Deadli ne

17/5/18

Rationale: Driven by trying to make sense of chronic pain. Initially used roughing as a distraction tool but the project evolved into producing more finished pieces, trying to depict something that is personal and invisible to others.

Brief 10: Print Stuff

Deadli ne

28/4/18

Rationale: Producing a range of screen printed pieces to exhibit at Print Stuff fair. Using existing pieces of work and adapting them for print, re-contextualising them as pieces of standalone art.
