Fine jeweller Siobhan Way’s latest collection explores the beauty of reflected light. She talks to Pip Christmass erth-based fine jeweller Siobhan Way admits she still gets anxious every time she releases a new collection, despite her latest range, Prisma, being her fifth since launching in 2007. “It’s not nervousness, really, but you are putting yourself out there,” she says. “It’s your own personal creative expression, so there’s always going to be that little bit of anxiety about how people receive it. I think if you don’t feel that way, that’s a worry. It shows how much you care about what you’re putting out there.” She needn’t worry too much. Prisma, a 34-piece collection of hand-sourced mirror-cut and angle- cut gemstones set into 18ct pink and yellow gold rings, earrings and necklaces, is her finest to date. Ms Way doesn’t really do “flashy”. Her designs are elegant, subtle, and yet still eye-catchingly beautiful. While some of the cuts in this collection are bold, geometric, and angular, there is still something very refined about them. A Siobhan Way piece is chic, without being overstated. Prisma’s gemstones, sourced from Brazil, Sri Lanka and Madagascar, include sparkling citrines, tourmaline, topaz, purple amethyst, aquamarines and violet spinel as well as the more subdued but equally entrancing smoky

Australian designer Danielle Wallace was recently tapped to design a curve-friendly range for iconic American swimwear brand Jantzen. The collection, A Place in the Sun, features Italian lycra which helps to shape and accentuate natural curves. “My inspiration for the collection comes from my favourite hotels, places like the Beverly Hills Hotel and Lake Como’s Villa d’Este,” Wallace says. The designer imagined swimsuits throughout the decades, worn by such glamorous women as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, or Farrah Fawcett. normally use in Bangkok, but the collaboration has been really exciting.” For Ms Way, herself a qualified gemologist, the ideas behind Prisma had been percolating in the back of her mind for five years before finally coming to fruition this year. “Ideas simmer away, and then you see something or start cutting a certain type of stone and you have the light-bulb moment and realise what direction you need to go in,” she says. “I’ve tried to keep the natural crystal forms but still make it modern and interesting and wearable.” The setting of the stones was not easy, given the difficulty of the

Ms Way says she was fascinated by the light-reflecting quality of natural crystal forms and wanted to investigate cuts that maximised their luminous qualities. “I’ve found an amazing cutter in Brazil who basically lives next to a mine well-known for producing citrines and various types of quartz,” she explains. “He cuts from the rough, so the colours are just beautiful. It was a very trusting step for me, because I haven’t worked beyond the cutter I

cuts. “We definitely broke a few stones working on the collection,” she admits. “Quite often we had to go back to square one. But then the collection evolves and turns into something else. The piece has to work, and look good on an aesthetic level.” Prisma contains a mix of larger geometric pieces and finer detail, so on one hand you have mirror-cut purple amethyst in a modernist ring setting, and on another you have delicate green tourmaline necklaces on fine pink

gold chain. The necklaces are designed to be worn either alone, or layered with stones in other colours. Ms Way has also experimented with agate and natural drussy in a series of arty, organic-looking rings, necklaces and cuffs. Quite different from the rest of her work, she suggests these pieces signal a new direction for the future. “I quite like the idea of things being sparkly without being ‘blingy’,” she says. “It’s something I want to develop a bit more.” While Siobhan Way pieces are sold interstate at Becker Minty in Sydney, the jeweller maintains a studio in Subiaco where she meets clientele by private appointment. This low-key approach hasn’t stopped her pieces from being snapped up by the likes of Deborah Hutton, Abbie Cornish and Bella Heathcoate, and her work has appeared in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and marie claire. In a culture in which talent and achievement is often loudly self-proclaimed, this is one creative who prefers to let the work speak for itself. To explore the collection go to siobhanway.com
