The Akron Opera House What: The Akron Opera House, currently being restored to its turn-of-the-century glory, is one of Iowa’s remaining historical gems which community spirit has kept alive. Built in 1905, the Opera House held its first performance, “The Homeseekers,” in February 1906. Over the next 100 years, an array of live performances played at the Opera House – Chautauqua’s, theater, Lyceum speeches, medicine shows and opera. Akron was on the Pembina rail line, which brought traveling troupes of actors, musicians and politicians to rural communities. A certain magic happened when players came to Iowa and mingled with the locals. Community members could see famous people and taste the culture of the large cities like Kansas City, Chicago and Minneapolis. The Opera House shows six to seven shows per year. Antiques Uniques and

Whether or not a modern item will become an antique of the future depends on the item, the availability of the item and the desire of the masses to acquire it. It’s about supply and demand. Some things will make it, some things will not. Here are some predictions about the future of modern collectibles: Vintage posters: A name to look out for is Razzia. His real name is Gerard Courbouleix Deneriaz, and he’s a Frenchman who still produces designs by painting them first. Look out for posters of him that depict the

Queen Mary, or any of the vintage and classic car races that he has designed for. Swatch watches: Some people have a couple of hundred swatches displayed on their wall and wear only one. They must be in good condition and have the original strap to be valuable. Home accessories: The Conrah vase can be a real scoop. The sparkly metal vases are made in bright and vibrant colors then cut with patterns ranging from lattice work to lozenges. Dartington Glass is the latest in glassware.

Jewelry: Handcrafted creations are available from exclusive shops. Tea sets: Those chintzy cups and saucers that fill Grandma’s china cabinet are at the center of a rapidly growing trend. People like to use them at tea and cake parties and country weddings. Eighties technology: Vintage handheld computer games and Motorola “brick” mobile phones could rise in desirability and value.

USEUM RAILROAD M, BU SIOUXLAND’S ILDINGS, OF THE INDUSTRY, PEOPLE TELLING THE STORY EVENTS THAT BUILT SIOUXLAND MACHINES, TECHNOLOGY, AND NEW EXHIBITIONS UNDER CONSTRUCTION A visit to the railroad museum-in-the-making shows that the Milwaukee Railroad Shops is shaping up as a Siouxland historical gem. Most people outside of the railroad industry will never get to climb up into the cab of a steam or diesel locomotive and see the sophisticated technology involved with operating an engine, but they can experience that world when they visit the new STEAM Locomotion exhibit now under construction at the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District. This exhibit is funded through a grant from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Foundation
