COMPLETE Care
There is one organization in the Siouxland
area where individuals with mental health issues can go to find complete care, support, and meet their mental health needs - all regardless of their ability to pay.
“It’s our job to provide comprehensive care for patients in order to improve their overall individual functioning,” said Sheila Martin, pediatric IHH (Integrated Health Home Program) director.
Siouxland Mental Health Center is a nonprofit community mental health center which provides an exhaustive list of services for the evaluation and treatment of people of all ages who experience mental illness, emotional distress, and overwhelmingly stressful circumstances. SMHC provides a wide array of different programs and services for the community,
being the community mental health agency in Woodbury County. “I think we’re so caring,” said Jane Ameen, manager of community support services, “I know in my department, the length of time that people have been employed here shows a real dedication, and a real connection with the work that they do, and putting the client first - their desires, their wants, their goals.” The Integrated Home Health program provides care coordination and support services to adults and youth with mental health conditions, emphasizing a close bond between physical and behavioral health and taking an approach to care that provides individuals and families with a team of professionals who work together to meet the needs of their clients. These programs are offered for both adults and children. SMHC’s five locations across Siouxland. This includes the Friendship House, which offers people with mental illness an opportunity to socialize in a non-treatment setting; the Main Clinic, which offers therapy, psychiatry, administration, and patient intake. Other locations include Community Support Services, which houses the AIHH, intensive psychiatric rehabilitation, Project Compass/ Mental Health Court, Project Restore (a program for the homeless), Access to Recovery, and peer coaching for substance abuse. “Community Support is a service that provides direct support to a person who has a severe and persistent mental illness and lives independently in the community,” said Ameen. “The person receives assistance to identify, obtain and use resources available to them in the community.” Pediatric Integrated Health Home is another branch of their programming, and is located within the Siouxland
District Health Home Department. SMHC also includes the Sioux Rivers Regional Assessment and Stabilization Center, allowing an individual to stay for up to 23 hours to be monitored by a group of medical and mental health professionals for stabilization. They offer these comprehensive, caring services to members of Woodbury, Plymouth, and Sioux counties. “You’re a person, and [your mental illness] might be something that you deal with every day, but you can still do and be and have a life that you would like to, as best as you can cope,” said Ameen. “People do recover. I think that isn’t well known or believed by a lot of people.” Above all, SMHC’s goal is to provide the utmost care and support for those suffering from mental illness in the community by intervention and prevention.
“We’re trying to make a difference in peoples’ lives, and trying to make a difference in this community,” Martin said. “We are committed to creating a healthcare home for all the patients we serve with mental illness,” Martin added.

LEGACY SOLUTIONS COVERS THE BASES OF YOUR FINANCIAL WORRIES
“
One thing I always tell my kids and my agents – If your client was your mother or father, how would you treat them? What lengths would you go to help them? We take that approach with every client. –Pat Raitt, owner of Legacy Solutions, LLC.
Pat Raitt, owner of Legacy Solutions, talks about his employees and his kids the same way – with pride and affection. Since two of his eight local employees are his own sons, you believe him when he says, “We’re like one big family.” Legacy Solutions’ team of local agents have been going above and beyond for their hometown people for 30 years. “When Legacy started it was all around health insurance, life insurance and annuities,” says Raitt. “We often hear people say, “We didn’t realize you work with people and their savings. We offer more services for our clients than when Legacy began. As the company continues to grow, it stays focused on the goal it has worked toward since day one – bring solutions to the table that will not only create a legacy, but that will pass on a legacy. “When we meet with a customer, we want to make sure we’ve touched on everything. It’s important for us to cover all of the bases.” When Raitt bought Legacy Financial Services more than four years ago, he changed the title and created the “Covering the Bases” program, a thorough, objective approach to an individual’s needs, goals and desires. “We recognize that everybody is different, so when we sit down with someone, we want to talk about the options that are best for them,” says Raitt. “Covering the Bases” touches on three key points: risk management as it pertains to
”
healthcare, wealth accumulation and wealth distribution. “As an independent agency, we can shop for our customers and customize each consumer’s options.” Non-independent agencies only have access to a limited number of options, narrowing a customer’s choices. The agents of Legacy work to stay on top of procedures and guidelines for numerous insurance carriers, which means more work for the agents, but better options for the clients. “It’s customer first. We combine the solutions that best suit each client’s unique needs,” says Raitt, “Everything that we do is in the customer’s best interest.” Legacy was a pioneer in bringing Medicare Advantage plans to Siouxland. The agency held numerous meetings with area physicians and hospitals with the goal of providing their Medicare clients with more options to better suit their individual needs. “After that, Medicare Advantage plans took off,” says
Raitt. “Physicians and hospitals started to accept them and now they play an important role for Medicare recipients and their healthcare needs.” Legacy Solutions’ efforts to stay current on the insurance industry are ongoing. “The life insurance industry is so different than it was 30 years ago,” says Raitt. Life insurance premiums have actually gone down because life expectancy has gone up. People can spend death benefits while they’re alive for chronic illness. A common question asked of the Legacy agents is, “How do we pay for long-term care?” The agents of Legacy Solutions are seasoned Medicare experts and always take the time to explain to their clients how Medicare works: Part A, hospital bills, Part B, physician charges, Part C, Medicare advantage and Part D, prescription drug plan. Raitt’s advice for those curious about their finances? “Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions. If we can’t help someone, we’ll come right out and tell them,” he says. “A lot of times, people get in a rut and think they’re stuck, and that’s not true. Nine times out of 10, when we meet with someone, we’re able to help them somewhere.” Legacy Solutions, LLC., is located at 701 Pierce St., in downtown Sioux City. Fall has arrived at Palmer’s Old Tyme Candy Shoppe in Sioux City, bringing with it your favorite seasonal candy, caramel apples and specialty foods. When you stop in at Palmer Candy, you will find they have put out some of their fall candy. They have added new fudge flavors and, due to customer demand, they have already stocked some of their bulk Halloween candy varieties, such as Jelly Pumpkins, Sour Jelly Pumpkins, Candy Corn, Autumn Mix, Candy Corn Taffy, Indian Corn, Mello Creme Pumpkins, Fall Festival Mix, Halloween Ju Ju Mix, Orange and Black Spice Drops and Fall Gems.
Fall is also the time when they put out their selection of fall gifts and gift baskets. Palmer Candy has designed a creative display for their honey products next to the fudge case. You can mix and match items, such as Cinnamon Creamed honey, teas, tea kettles, steeping cups, tea towels, aprons and more to make the perfect gift basket.
Soon to arrive will be the bagged candy, perfect for trick-or-treaters. Palmer Candy will be bringing back their peanut butter cups with a pumpkin face, snack sized Bings, and of course, foil-wrapped eyeballs.
La Quercia from Iowa makes prosciutto and salami, both pre-sliced, and Nduja, a spicy salami spread.
“In the fall, customers ask for caramel apples, Halloween candy and a LOT of fudge. They flock in right before Halloween to give it out to trick-ortreaters,” said Jon Sadler, manager of the Palmer Candy store. In the Candy area, Palmer Candy has added specialty Cotton Candy by Chocolate Storybook, based in West Des Moines. Chocolate Storybook’s Cotton Candy is light, airy perfection, hand packed in a colorful tub. It comes in a dazzling array of flavor options from Classic Pink Vanilla to Spicy Jalapeño and everything in between. “They make some unusual flavors,” said Jon Sadler, store manager of Palmer Candy. Palmer Candy carries Chocolate Storybooks’ Caramel Apple, Buttered Popcorn, Atomic Fire, Pancakes and Maple Syrup, and Candy Corn flavors, just to name a few. This time of the year, Palmer Candy lines their wide window with caramel apples, which are made fresh in-house every two days. Sadler said the apples are always gone the next day because they’re so popular.
The Gourmet Specialty Shoppe is also stocked with fall items. One of the new features of the gourmet shop is the cheese cooler, filled with meats as well as hard and soft cheeses you can’t find anywhere else. The cooler, which was introduced in May, showcases prosciutto, pate, salami, summer sausage, chicken sausage, fancy olives, domestic and imported cheese, prunes imported from France, and items such as cow milk, goat milk and sheep milk cheese, and water buffalo cheese.
“We bring in new things often. The cheese cooler has been a big hit,” Sadler said. “We’re always trying to get people to try different things and expand their food palate,” added Rohde. When fall comes, comfort foods become part of the selection at the gourmet shop. You’ll find Molly & Drew beer bread mixes, Frontier Soup soup mixes to make higher quality soups than you would find in a grocery store, higher-end chocolate from around the world, Wild Hill Honey, scone mixes, and more. Jessica Rohde, assistant manager of the Palmer Candy store, said fall is the time when they bring in products, such as apple butter and maple pumpkin butter from Stonewall Kitchen and Honeyville fruit butter to put on toast and fresh rolls, Blackberry Patch Apple Butter syrup to pour on pancakes, waffles and french toast. “They have a lot of recipes you can put the syrup into,” Rohde said. Baking mixes, such as the scone mixes by Sticky Fingers, make it easy to make fresh, delicious baked goods in a snap by just adding water. They come in varieties such as Cinnamon Raisin Scone and Maple Scone with maple glaze. Stonewall Kitchen makes Pumpkin Spice Quickbread and Spice Pumpkin Muffin mixes. Quick, easy mixes from Palmer Candy’s gourmet shop are perfect
when you need to entertain guests. Wind & Willow makes sweet cheese ball mixes for an easy dessert in pumpkin pie and caramel apple flavors. Fischer and Wieser of Texas creates soup mixes, including a tasty tomato basil variety. “It’s rich and very good,” Rohde said. “It’s the only thing in a jar that I’ve found is close to restaurant quality. I like to add a cup of heavy cream. Molly & Drew Beer Bread Company makes a Taste of Tuscany beer bread that’s fantastic with the tomato basil soup. “We also carry the Frontier Soups line of soup starters. You just add liquid and ingredients such as chicken bouillon. They give you some suggestions for added ingredients. Their corn chowder is fantastic. They also have enchilada and tortilla soups. People love both of them. You can have these soups ready in 20 to 30 minutes.” In addition to many edible items, the gourmet shop carries a wide assortment of non-edible seasonal gifts in the fall. “This is a good time of the year for teas and coffees, gift mugs and teapots,” Sadler said. “We have honey bee themed gifts. We have really cute aprons, and our fall tea towels are out.” The gourmet shop is stocked with as many local items as possible. For example, Molly & Drew beer bread products come from Sac City, Iowa, and Beatrice Bakery Co. apple strudel and peach strudel coffee cakes are made in Beatrice, Neb. The goal of the gourmet shop at Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe is to carry specialty foods that customers won’t find anywhere else in the Siouxland area, Sadler said. “You won’t find the items we carry here at specialty shops in Omaha or Sioux Falls, and you can’t buy them at Whole Foods stores,” said Sadler, who started adding gourmet sauces, jams, dip mixes, teas and other specialty foods at Palmer’s in the fall of 2011 to go along with their confections. “It’s hard to find good spices and ingredients. We’re trying to fill the void.” Sadler and Rohde attend the Fancy Foods shows and picks up specialty foods at those events, and he buys products from different brokers. This allows him to keep adding new products for customers to try, he said. For more information about the gourmet shop at Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shop, visit the store at 405 Wesley Parkway in Sioux City or call (712) 258-7790.

TURNING BUILDING CONCEPTS INTO REALITY fter working for a local construction company, Nate Herbst and Mike Robinette decided to start their own construction company, H & R Construction. “It was definitely something we wanted to do, and the timing was right. The opportunity presented itself and we seized it,” Herbst said. For the past six years, H & R Construction has been turning building concepts into reality on a local and national level. As a general contractor based in South Sioux City, H & R Construction oversees the construction of commercial, industrial, automotive and institutional/medical building projects in 17 states, including Iowa and Nebraska. Their project capacity range is from $150,000 to $30 million per project. “We’re a nationwide contractor based in South Sioux City,” Herbst said. Companies all over the country choose to have H & R Construction oversee their building project for a variety of reasons. “We pride ourselves on our work ethic and problem solving abilities,” said Robinette. “We work hard to offer a cost-effective solution to meet our clients’ needs.” “We’re honest with customers and on time,” added Herbst. “We get work done on time and before it has to be done. We try to make projects seamless for our customers as we realize that they have their own business to run; time spent dealing with the project is time taken away from what their main focus should be. We’re flexible with the way we contract, and we have open communication with our customers.” The owners also attribute their success to their 38 employees. H & R Construction employees perform the carpentry and concrete work themselves on
their construction projects and the company hires subcontractors for the other trades. “We have good people all around,” Herbst said. “Our craftsmen are great carpenters and laborers. We also have great site managers and superintendents. We have 15 superintendents that work for the company today. They’re really the backbone of our company. Without them, and our administrative assistant Andrea O’Donnell, there wouldn’t be an H & R Construction.”
Among the buildings that H & R Construction has completed in the Siouxland area are Billion Nissan, Billion GMC, Whispering Creek office complex, Perry Creek Elementary School and Bodean’s Bakery in Le Mars, Iowa.
The company also places a strong value on the subcontractors they work with. “We choose to work with the best ones in Siouxland,” said Robinette. “We try to stay as local as possible.” Herbst and Robinette have a strong background in the construction field. Herbst, a Salix, Iowa native, earned his degree in construction management from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. Robinette, a South Sioux City native, majored in construction management at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Herbst said the most challenging and rewarding project he has worked on is the Billion Auto Campus in Iowa City. “We completed 120,000 square feet over four buildings in 7 1/2 months,” he said. Robinette’s most challenging and rewarding project was Cloverleaf Cold Storage’s 250,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Monmouth, Ill. completed in 11 months. He also cited the Perry Creek Elementary School building, one of the bigger projects in Sioux City. “The whole community can benefit from it,” he said.
In addition, some of their other local works include the first phase of the Goosmann Law Firm, the Security Forces Building - Air Guard in Sioux City which was LEED Silver certified, Sergeant Bluff Eye Care in Sergeant Bluff, and Family Healthcare of Siouxland (Morningside). H & R Construction is currently working on Cloverleaf Cold Storage’s expansion in Sioux City, Bodega’s on Pearl Street, and Thurston County Law Enforcement Center.

AWARD WINNING
CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITAL
Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa has added a new Hologic 3-D mammography unit to their radiology department. According to Jenny Coble, director of radiology at Burgess Health Center, the new mammography unit detects up to 41 percent more invasive breast cancers. 3-D mammography can be used for routine screening mammography and be may be particularly effective for women with dense breast tissue or those at high risk for developing breast cancer. 3-D mammography give women a more detailed exam to detect breast cancer. “3-D has become the best practice of breast care for women, and we wanted to provide our patients with the best technology for detecting breast cancer,” she said. “It’s a great addition to our radiology department.” Like traditional mammography, 3-D mammography uses X-rays to produce images of the breast tissue in order to detect lumps,
tumors or other abnormalities. Traditional mammography produces just two images of each breast, a side-to-side view and a top-to-bottom view. 3-D mammography utilizes these same two views of the breast but provides the radiologist crystal clear 1-millimeter slices of each view of the breast. The radiologist is then able to review reconstructed images of the breast, one slice at a time, almost like turning the page in a book. This makes is easier to see if there’s anything to be concerned about. Only three different 3-D mammography units exist, and Hologic has the biggest market share, she said. Hologic’s unit has had FDA clearance the longest. “Hologic has a proven track record with this technology. Their mammography equipment is proven to detect breast cancer at an early stage,” she said. 3-D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is a relatively new breast imaging procedure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011. “Many other facilities that offer 3D mammography

charge the patient an extra fee if is not covered by their insurance, or give the patient the option to have a 2D exam done in place of a 3D exam so they do not incur an additional charge. At Burgess we offer 3D to every patient without extra out of pocket charges. We feel that a woman should not be denied the best technology because of her inability to afford it,” she said. In addition to the 3-D mammography unit, Burgess Health Center radiology department features digital radiographic equipment, a CT scanner and two ultrasound machines. “We offer breast ultrasound and also perform breast biopsies at our facility to complement our mammography services. We have a parked mobile MRI scanner that has been here for almost 2 years and we are currently adding on space to the hospital for an in-house permanent MRI scanner that is scheduled to be up and running by mid-December,” she said. Burgess Health Center is an award-winning critical access hospital that is accredited by the state of Iowa. The staff is committed to improving the quality of the life for the people and communities served, by providing excellent healthcare and exceptional patient experiences.

rom racing motorcycles to side-by-side utility task vehicles and watercraft, Champion Cycle in South Sioux City covers all the bases of Kawasaki products.
The business, started 30 years ago by Greg Chicoine, has evolved from being the destination place for motorcycle racing enthusiasts to providing several models of Kawasaki ATVs, UTVs and Jet Skis. “When I grew up and started racing motorcycles, it was a little different then. Most dealers were racers and enthusiasts,” says Chicoine, president of Champion Cycle. “They worked on
Cycle in 1986, he had been in the industry for more than five years. “I was, and still am, a motorcycle racer,” said Chicoine, who has won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb five times. “That’s what got me into the motorcycle business.” He chose to build a Kawasaki dealership, because the product was higher quality than most, he says. “It’s why I have stayed a singleline dealer,” Chicoine says. “I have always believed in the product and felt it was the best. And we know a lot more about the product in general.Chicoine also chooses exceptional people for his crew, including Kyle McGinty and Larry Bliven, his right-hand men.

“Though we run a small crew, they are hand-picked,” he says. “They are the best at what they do.” Though the Siouxland racing circuit has declined during the years, Chicoine’s relationships with customers have grown strong and consistent.
“For 30 years, from day one, my letterhead has been ‘Our Name is on the Line.’ I meant it literally as on the starting line, and figuratively, that every day our name is on every job we do,” he says. “We are blessed in having a great customer base. It works both ways – we have to be good to our customers and they are good to us.” The industry has seen huge changes as well by adding Jet Skis and other personal watercraft, ATVs and the recently popular side-by-sides. Although ATVs are still popular, a lot of the market that started with traditional ATVs are getting older and find it easier to get in a vehicle rather than over one, Chicoine says. “And they’re versatile because you can take the family along. There’s lots of uses – work, recreation, snow removal and hunting,” he says. “And the safety features are selling points – doors, seatbelts and rollover protection.”

Plantage, Linn and commercial lenders at the Le Mars and Sioux Center branches have all processed countless types of loans tai lored to small business, including SBA loans. Our bankers also work with the Siouxland Economic Development Corporation to determine the best loan sources and funding streams for the clients. “Developing strong relationships with our customers is one thing that we do exceptionally well. As their six sons grew up, they followed in their parent’s footsteps and started assisting with the tile installations. As the company grew, they began to see a need for more room. In 2003, the Boatmans built a large building at their residence, which tripled their space. A showroom was added in 2005, so they could both sell tile and help customers design their space and choose what products were right for them. In 2007, they decided to purchase a used bridge saw in order to fabricate and install granite and quartz countertops. At this time, the sink cutouts and polishing were all done by hand. While CHS Inc. is a relatively new name in our region, it is widely known as is the largest farmer-owned cooperative in the United States. Diversified in energy, grains and foods, CHS (www. chsinc.com) is owned by 75,000 producers, about 1,100 member-owned cooperatives and 20,000 preferred stock holders. Simply put, CHS sells cooperatives and farmers everything they need to grow healthy, profitable crops,” says Chris Oehler, CHS plant manager, South Sioux City, Neb. “Products like fertilizer, seed, crop protection products, agronomic expertise, financing, fuel, lubricants for their machinery, and propane to dry their crops after harvest and warm their homes. Then, we buy our customers’ grain and sell it, either as a commodity or as a value-added ingredient, to food and feed companies all over the world.”
bars, cereals, energy drinks, and processed meats, such as pizza toppings and meat in frozen entrees. Oehler says the process starts with soy flour white flakes, shipped to the plant from the CHS soybean processing plant at Creston, Iowa, or Mankato, Minn. “We use fairly complicated, proprietary processes to extract the protein from the white flake. I would describe that process as combining science, chemistry, physics and mechanical methods,” he says. On-site chemistry and microbiology labs monitor the production process to ensure high quality products that meet customer specifications. All product leaving the South Sioux City plant is non-GMO, and kosher and Halal certified. “Every day, our teams are focused on helping our owners grow by providing global food and feed companies with safe, high quality soy protein isolates,” says Oehler. “The South Sioux City facility adds value for owners by extending the use of their commodity into new, rapidly-growing consumer markets.”
At the South Sioux City plant, CHS annually manufactures about 9,000 tons of isolated soy protein, which is an ingredient used to increase the nutritional components of snack

Dale McKinney, giving back to the community for 40 plus years. As an architect in the Sioux City community for 40 plus years, Dale McKinney of M+ Architects has spent a great deal of that time giving back. Originally from Gladbrook, Iowa, McKinney decided to become an architect while giving back to his country serving in a recon platoon in South Vietnam. “One of the guys in the platoon had a degree in landscape architecture. We just got to talking. I knew my goal was to go back to school. I was not settled in what I wanted to do. I had taken some drafting classes in high school,” McKinney said.
“I thought architecture was the way to go. I wrote my wife to work on getting me accepted to school. I left Vietnam in February of 1971, hot, steamy, wet, and I exited the Army. I came home to my wife and 2-year-old son, Kris.” “My wife had me enrolled and accepted. I started my education at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I spent five quarters there, spring, summer, fall, winter, spring, and then I attended three years at Iowa State University.” McKinney graduated from Iowa State University in 1975 with a major in architecture and has been licensed since the early 1980s. After college, he got a job in a Sioux City architectural firm and has been active in the community ever since. He started his own firm, M+ Architects, Inc. in 1991.
McKinney has a passion for historic buildings. Some of his works includes the Carnegie Library at the corner of 6th & Jackson, Plymouth Block (Terminal Building) on East Fourth, and Central High School (Castle on the Hill). In addition to local projects in Sioux City, McKinney has completed historic projects in Waterloo, Dubuque, Clinton and Des Moines, and beyond. Some of the local projects McKinney is most proud of include Heelan Hall at Briar Cliff University, YMCA in South Sioux City and the Anderson Dance Pavilion. His current projects include the new Dakota City Fire Station and the Bomgaars Ag Expo in the former Stockyards. McKinney is proud that M+ Architects is a certified or verified service disabled veteran owned business employing five people, and he has been the only local architect elevated to FAIA (Fellow of the American Institute of Architects) in Sioux City since 2011. The last FAIA was William Steele in 1918.
Architects in Iowa in 1989 and was the AIA National Director Central States for three years from 1997 to 1999. From 2001 to 2010, he served as a board member on the governor appointed Iowa Board of Architectural Examiners, the regulatory division for licensing architects. In 2014, McKinney was installed as president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). The 95-year-old organization, based in Washington, D.C., oversees the development and application of standards for licensure and credentialing of architects in the U.S., the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. McKinney, owner of M+ Architects in Sioux City, has been active with NCARB for 15 years, serving on several committees. He currently chairs a Task Force on Ethics. In October, he will take on a new volunteer position as a member of the National Architecture Accreditation Board, which accredits schools of architecture that teach young people to become architects.
He is also proud of the extensive volunteer work he has performed in his career over the years to give back to his profession.
McKinney said he volunteers as much as he does because he has a desire to give back to the profession of architecture and to his community.
McKinney was the state chapter president for one year of the American Institute of
He said the most challenging part of his career has been balancing work and travel. All of it is worth it to McKinney, who works tirelessly to improve the architecture profession for the next generation and make sure students are qualified through education, examination and experience to take on the task that awaits them of protecting the health, safety and welfare of people who use the buildings they design.

AGE HEALTHIER, LIVE HAPPIER Midlife doesn’t have to be a crisis. You can manage your health now & ward off the effects of aging through healthy living and preventative medical care.
Dr. Mark Carlson, who practices concierge medicine at Siouxland Adult Medicine, said instead of waiting until they have a health event such as a heart attack or stroke to become proactive about their health, younger people in their 30s and 40s should start getting tested now to determine the state of their health and do something about the results BEFORE they have a health event. Carlson’s goal as an internal medicine physician and doctor of concierge medicine is to take a progressive stance on health management. He recommends preventive screenings, testing and follow-up, which are essential in providing patients with the knowledge they need to address problems in the early stages, when they are easiest to treat and when treatment is more effective. Through his practice, Siouxland Adult Medicine and Rose Hill MedSpa, he provides regular health and wellness screenings as well as hormone therapy to greatly reduce the chances of having a health event and to ward off the effects of aging. Regular screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, diabetes and obesity can have dramatic results in combating these conditions. Five diseases cause more than two-thirds of all U.S. deaths annually - heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis, emphysema) and diabetes. Early detection plays a large role in treating these illnesses and in preventing long-term disability. The testing provided at Siouxland Adult Medicine includes a cardiac and pulmonary fitness evaluation, advanced lipid testing with lipid particle analysis, cardiovascular prediction modeling and genetic testing that provides you with state-of-the-art information on your level of fitness, cardiovascular risk, pulmonary health as well as your risk of diabetes and cancer. Testing for common nutritional and vitamin deficiencies is typically included. This provides you with a pathway to improve your cardiovascular fitness and overall wellness with a comprehensive roadmap to your future health and well-being. In addition, behavior modifications, such as smoking cessation, exercise, reduced alcohol consumption,
healthy eating and weight loss have been proven to significantly reduce the risk factors that underlie our nation’s biggest health problems.
“The only viable method to achieve sustained optimal hormone levels is with implantable pelleted bioidentical estrogen and testosterone,” he said.
Carlson said he likes to try nutraceutical therapy as well as diet and exercise, and lifestyle changes before resorting to pharmaceutical solutions.
The treatment is only administered after measuring the patient’s blood hormone levels. Dosage amounts take into account an individual’s age, weight, physical activity and baseline hormone levels. After 4-6 weeks, blood hormones are measured again to make sure they are at optimal levels and to make changes, if needed.
“I would rather see a person benefit from healthy living and diet choices rather than another prescription,” he said. He also recommends the Mediterranean diet, the only diet to show improvement in preventing cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s when compared with the Western diet. “We want to take advantage of all these things now instead of waiting for health problems to reach up and bite us in the face,” Carlson said. “We can prevent bad outcomes rather than wait for events to occur and dealing with them then.” If, during testing, lab results show a thyroid, testosterone and/or estrogen deficiency, Siouxland Adult Medicine can safely restore a person’s hormone balance with BioTE pellet therapy (Bio-identical Hormone Pellet Therapy). Traditionally, hormone imbalances have been treated with oral hormone therapy, a one-size-fits-all combination of synthetic estradiol and progestin, or testosterone in the form of injections, patches, creams and gels, resulting in adverse side effects, such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. BioTE pellet therapy, on the other hand, uses bioidentical, all-natural estrogen and testosterone, delivered by tiny pellets inserted just under the skin. The pellets, compounded by a compounding pharmacy using strict federal guidelines, are the tiny storehouse of hormones which the body can access as needed. Pellets deliver a consistent level of hormone and outperform oral, injection, patch and cream prescriptions with fewer side effects. It provides sustained hormone levels throughout the day, for up to four to six months. Carlson is the only practitioner within a several state radius that performs this natural form of BioTE hormone replacement therapy. He said bio-identical hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants is the safe and effective route to hormone replacement. He backs it up with decades of research, clinical studies and hundreds of patients who testify that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy using pellets is the answer for them.
“This is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. This is the most scientific way to dose hormone replacement, he said. The therapy offers many benefits. Both men and women who receive pellet implant therapy will experience greater mental clarity, increased libido and interest in sex, decreased body fat and an increase in muscle tone and mass, enhanced energy level and less fatigue, and a decrease in depression, irritability and mood swings. “The strategy with BioTE is not only to replace hormones but to optimize hormone levels to what is typically present in healthy young adults for the best symptom relief and to experience optimal improvement in muscle, body fat and bone density,” he said. The longer women go without the protection of estrogen or go without replacement therapy, the greater the risk of developing serious health problems including osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, many cancers, impaired vision and Alzheimer’s Disease. “Women also need testosterone therapy,” he said. “The ovaries make testosterone, which results in less body fat. They lose testosterone faster than estrogen. Women lose 50 percent of their testosterone production between the ages of 20-40. Men begin losing 1-3 percent of their testosterone a year starting in their late 20s. With reduced testosterone levels, both men and women have more central body fat, loss of muscle mass, and diminished libido.” Carlson optimizes hormone therapy with nutraceutical grade supplements, such as iodine and Vitamin D, for adequate nutrient and mineral support. If you are looking for a natural way to regain your youthful vigor and energy with hormone replacement therapy, then BioTE may be right for you. The first step is to have your labs drawn to determine your hormone levels. These can be done at Siouxland Adult Medicine. Dr. Carlson does a free BioTE educational seminar at the clinic the 2nd Tuesday of every month @ 5:30 pm. If it sounds too GOOD to be true, it probably is? Not so with Galactic Stream, the industry’s newest televisionstreaming device that is already reaching global proportions.
Austin and Seth Tonner, brothers from Sioux City, founded Galactic Stream just under a year ago.
The streaming device allows viewing of TV shows (both live and previously aired), movies (current and old classics) and sports (college and professional), all with an Internet connection and without the monthly fees. Still too good to be true? “You have to see it for yourself,” Austin Tonner says. “When we get people into the room to see it, they are amazed.” The Tonner brothers invite people to visit their store at 507 Seventh St., Suite 210, in downtown Sioux City for a live demo. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Galactic Stream essentially makes any television a “smart” TV. The Galactic Stream device, about the size of an Internet router, plugs into a TV via an HDMI cable and connects to Internet by Wifi or Ethernet. The Galactic Stream software then accesses from the Internet hundreds of channels and thousands of shows, movies and sporting events. “Lots of shows and movies are available on the Internet, but you have to search and download and deal with pop-ups,” Tonner says. “We take all that out and do the searching for you.”
Television episodes, from the first season up to the current episode aired last night, can be viewed on demand, and without commercials. Tonner says about an hour after a show airs live on TV, it can be accessed on demand from Galactic Stream. “You don’t have to wait for the full series to come out later on DVD or other streaming services,” Tonner says. “It doesn’t matter what network. We have it.” Hundreds of TV channels are also available for live viewing. Users can watch an unlimited amount of movies, and can search databases of movies dating back to the 1940s. Even movies premiering in theaters as recently as a few weeks ago are available on demand for viewing through Galactic Stream. “And all are in excellent quality,” Tonner says. The sports access is perhaps the best part of Galactic Stream, Tonner says. Every sporting event, whether professional, collegiate or Pay-Per-View, is available for no additional fee. There are no black-outs of certain sports events with Galactic Stream. “As soon as the event is live, you can access it,” he says.
The Galactic Stream device is available for $399, a one-time charge. No technician is needed to hook up the device – it’s as easy as connecting it to the TV, plugging it into an electrical outlet and accessing the Internet. Cable and satellite TV services may still be used with the device. Galactic Stream has live customer support available. The purchase of a device comes with a 15 to 20-minute live training session while in the home, with a trainer on speaker phone and walking the family through the features.
