Floating an idea for extra bathtub comfort
D
ear Ed: We are buying a new home and the builder is letting us pick out the bathroom fixtures within a budget. Since a whirlpool tub is not possible, what extra soaking comforts can we add to a standard bathtub? — Pat, Texas Answer: When choosing your standard size bathtub, I suggest looking for a tub that has a slotted overflow drain. Most tubs have a circular overflow cutout to fit the round overflow drain assembly. A slotted bathtub has ED DEL a special long and narrow GRANDE overflow cutout that looks like a coin slot. With this thinner cutout opening, the water level in the tub can be a little higher for some extra soaking comfort. Two notes: A slotted overflow drain assembly is needed to fit this type of tub. Also, the bathtub and drain assembly may be a special order fixture, so check for availability. With all this info, you might say we explored your bathtub question in depth. Top 5 trends in kitchen design for 2019 … and beyond
P
rofessional kitchen designers are at the front line of the latest trends, a result of the countless hours they spend at showrooms and trade shows— not to mention the time they spend on social media swapping images, ideas and DAN DICLERICO inspiration. Every year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) surveys hundreds of these designers around the country to crowdsource the emerging styles, features and materials with the most staying power. If you’re considering a kitchen remodel, you’ll want to check out these five trends from the most recent NKBA report. They’ll be defining kitchens not just in 2019, but for years to come.
TREND NO. 1: COLOR, AND LOTS OF IT The all-white kitchen will always have a place in ultra-modern homes, but its days as the dominant design force are over. “We’re heading into 2020 with bold, vibrant colors in the kitchen,” says Elle H-Millard, a certified kitchen designer and editor-at-large with NKBA. Deep, saturated colors evocative of nature, including emerald green and navy blue, are on the rise, maybe as an island counter color or even as an appliance finish.
TREND NO. 2: COLUMN REFRIGERATORS
DREAMSTIME
This year, we’re breaking away from all-white kitchens, mixing up our metal fixtures and hardware, and letting our appliances cook while we catch up on our newsfeeds. food storage units, allowing for far greater flexibility of design. Besides its aesthetic appeal, designers say this trend appeals to growing consumer focus on healthy eating, with its emphasis on fresh foods. That might result in a large, centrally located column refrigerator for produce, meats, fish and the like, plus a smaller column freezer off to the side or tucked under a countertop.

These smart appliances are outfitted with sensors, cameras and other advanced technologies that enable them to identify what’s being cooked and set the cooking times and temperatures accordingly. “These new technologies have tons of promise because they allow homeowners to cook like a professional,” says H-Millard.
will instead boast an array of finishes. Call it the “new industrial,” an urban-influenced style that designers say will only get more popular in coming years. Black stainless steel, a darker, matte alternative to traditional stainless, continues to gain traction. You might think about pairing black appliances with a faucet and cabinet hardware in nickel with a brushed or satin finish.
TREND NO. 3: APPLIANCES THAT KNOW HOW TO COOK
TREND NO. 4: MIXED METALS
TREND NO. 5: EMPHASIS ON ACCESSIBILITY
The fridge and freezer have always been housed in the same rectangular box—until now. ColKitchens are getting more inumn refrigerators and freezers telligent, and there’s no better make it possible to separate the example of this than the “as-

the open-kitchen concept that’s been popular for years. The twist going forward is a focus on aging-in-place and universal design—that is, creating kitchens that are accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Strategies include installing cabinets with easy-access pullout drawers, putting down slip-resistant flooring and taking advantage of the latest technology, from touch-free faucets to voice-controlled lighting and appliances. Protect that investment by taking the proper steps to turning it on for the first time in the season. Irrigation systems involve many small moving parts and a constant water flow, and these elements require frequent maintenance. You should perform an inspection at least twice a year— when you start up for spring and when you close up for winter.
a crack or a leak that will need to be repaired. In any case, it’s a good idea to hire an irrigation professional to perform a thorough inspection, which can help pinpoint leaks or other potential problems. This service usually costs between $65 and $100. This inspection helps catch problems early. For minor problems, early repair will prevent your system from wasting water. And for bigger problems, you could prolong your system’s life by repairing them before they cause major damage. A technician can also offer advice about the best way to set up each sprinkler head to allocate water use. An irrigation inspector will check for leaks, check for wiring
issues, verify that the timer is working properly, slowly pressurize the main line, check the rain sensor, check all the zones for proper function and spray patterns, straighten crooked heads, and perhaps most importantly, test the backflow preventer.
CHECK THE BACKFLOW
Your backflow preventer is a crucial component of the irrigation system, and often you can’t check it yourself. Outdoor water can easily become tainted by fertilizers, pesticides and animal waste. If that material flows back into the potable water system, your family could easily become sick by drinking the tainted water. A backflow preventer makes sure the flow of irrigation water
goes only one way: out! In fact, this is so important that many municipalities require irrigation system owners to hire a certified professional to perform a test and verify it works, even if you aren’t performing separate maintenance. In most cases, a pro will include this service as part of the overall system inspection. Check your local regulations for details, and even if it’s not required, strongly consider a backflow inspection anyway. Paul F. P. This stoneware punch bowl set was made in Germany.
Punch bowl decorated with German castles Q
uestion: I have enclosed a photo of a covered punch bowl and matching mugs. The lid is decorated with leaves, vines and grapes in relief, and the handle is a cherub holding a pitcher. The punch bowl is decorated with panels of ANNE castle scenes that include: McCOLLAM Burg Sooneck, Burg Rheinstein, Marksburg, Burg Lahneck and Godesburg. The eight matching mugs are also decorated with scenes in relief. “Made in Germany — 3361,” is marked on the bottom of the punch bowl. We would appreciate any information regarding the use of our set, its history and value. Answer: Your stoneware punch bowl can be used for hot mulled wine, cider or rum punch. Without the maker’s name, it can be difficult to identify the factory where it was made. Having said that, your set was probably made by Simon Peter Gerz pottery in Hohr-Grenzhausen, Germany. The word “burg” means castle in the German language, not to be confused with the word “berg,” which means mountain. The number on your piece, 3361, is the design number. Please see ANTIQUE, Page H12

Antique From H9
Your punch bowl and matching mugs were made in the early 1900s and might be worth $225 to $275. Q: The enclosed mark is on the bottom of a footed hand-painted porcelain bowl my mother bought in an antiques shop in the 1960s. It is 10 inches in diameter, 3 inches tall and in mint condition. It is decorated with pink peonies, blue forget-me-nots and green foliage. The edge is trimmed in gold. My mother has been sorting through her things in preparation for her move to a retirement community. She gave the bowl to me because I always admired it. Anything you can tell me about the maker, age and value of our bowl will be appreciated. A: The mark you provided was used by exporters and brothers Ichizaemon and Toyo Morimura. They started out in Japan as a trading company in 1876. During the 1890s, they manufactured and exported fine porcelain specifically designed to appeal to the West. They established offices and showrooms in New York. According to the Tariff Act of 1890, any object imported to the United States must

ART OF DESIGN
Window dressings are a shady subject
W
indows are considered to be the eyes of a home. Through them, we can see a framed view of the outside world, and when we are outside looking in, they offer us a glimpse of the daily goings-on of life. Some windows require no treatment due JOSEPH PUBILLONES to a spectacular view, and yet other windows require some sort of treatment, either for privacy reasons or to protect the interiors from the intense rays of the sun. There are many types of window treatments for addressing issues of privacy, sun protection and aesthetics, too. Most of us are familiar with
curtains or drapes. People often use the terms invariably, however, there is a difference. Curtains are generally made with lighter fabrics and are not intended to protect against sunlight. They are mainly for privacy and aesthetics. Drapes, on the other hand, are usually lined and meant to block out light. As for aesthetics, depending on where you live and the type of decor you have, drapes can be made of velvet, silk, cotton, linen and even synthetic fabrics. Curtains and drapes can be simple and demure or as fancy as a ballgown. (Remember in “Gone with the Wind,” when Scarlett O’Hara has her dress made from fancy drapes?)
Shutters are another viable option for window treatments. This treatment gives an architectural flair to any room, as it reinforces the openings and becomes part of the millwork. Although generally painted white, wood shutters can be stained to match the millwork and, in certain instances, painted to contrast in color. Sometimes shutters can be divided in two, with closed panels on the bottom for privacy but open ones on top to allow light to come in to your space. Blinds are quite common and useful. They can provide privacy and also mitigate the sunlight due to their adjustable blades. These come in a variety of materials, from wood to vinyl to
aluminum, and a variety of sizes, from 2 inches to a “mini blind,” which has 3/4-inch blades. Similar to shutters, blinds are often associated with traditional architecture. Vertical blinds came about during the 1970s in response to the many sliding glass doors of modern architecture. Then there are those who prefer shades. Shades offer a more contemporary style to any interior because when they are rolled up, they are out of sight. There are shades made of vinyl which are meant to block out or filter light and even some that are considered blackout, which block all light (great for sleeping in on a sunny morning). Light-filtering shades can be
made of woven vinyl fabric or a light sheer fabric. Yet another variation of shades is translucent shades. Made from opaque paper or nylon, these shades stack like horizontal blinds yet allow in a copious amount of light. Surely, there are many more styles of window treatments. There is no wrong type of treatments, as long as they ultimately do their job in concealing your home and controlling the light. Joseph Pubillones is the owner of Joseph Pubillones Interiors, an award-winning interior design firm based in Palm Beach, Florida. His website is www.josephpubillones. com.

Shed light on windowless rooms
T
ypically dark, drab and cavelike, windowless rooms tend to pose a challenge. In many instances they cannot be counted as bedrooms or rooms CATHY in a home and HOBBS often become the space that is most difficult to determine proper function and of course, how to add light. Here are some tips on ways to shed light on windowless spaces.
stuffed or closed in. 3. Add plenty of extra light. Light sources—ideally three to four different types—will help prevent a windowless room from feeling overly dark. 4. Consider adding an interior window or clerestory. Adding an interior window will help as far as emitting some light. 5. Go light and bright. Light colors such as white, taupe and beige will help make a windowless space feel brighter.
Common uses can be home offices and even nurseries. 3. Overlook artwork. Artwork plays a key role in adding interest to a windowless space. 4. Forget greenery, accents and accessories. These spaces should shine and be presented just like any other room in your home. 5. Introduce too many colors into a windowless space. A palette of two to three colors will help the space maintain a clean, fresh look.

1. Add plenty of mirrors. Mirrors in a windowless space instantly act as “windows” and will make a small space feel larger. 2. Consider size and scale. Proper scale is key in these spaces, so they don’t feel
1. Overdo it with dark colors. Dark or darker shades of warm colors will cause walls to visually recede and will close in a space. 2. Discard windowless rooms. These spaces can still be functional and purposeful.

ear James: My husband and I are in our 50s. We want to build a house which we can stay in as we age. I remember JAMES how difficult DULLEY it was for my mother to leave her house. Is universal design the answer for us? — Sara B. Dear Sara: Leaving your home, where you have lived for many years, can be very difficult and emotionally painful. You can generally find someone to do the landscaping and cleaning. The reason most elderly people have to leave their homes is accessibility and mobility throughout the house. Typical problem areas include stairs between floors — and even just a step or two from one room to another. Another common problem is reaching cabinets above a kitchen countertop. As you age, you shrink and lose the ability to stretch. A standard bathtub or even a shower stall with a raised edge can be difficult to enter or impossible if you are in a wheelchair. Universal design likely is the answer for your new home. Although elderly people are commonly thought of as the ones who have problems in traditional homes, universal design considers everyone
— adults, the handicapped, children, etc. For example, a child often cannot access items in tall cabinets. A step at the edge of a shower can make anyone stumble when he or she is less steady immediately after waking in the morning. Even if you do not end up staying in your home as you are planning, having a universal design makes you house attractive to a larger group of potential buyers. Older couples are often the best buyers because they have some savings and find it easier to get financing or may just pay cash outright. With proper initial design, the cost of building a universal home will not be significantly higher. The bathroom is a key area for universal design. At least one of the bathrooms should have a shower stall with no step to enter it. This bathroom should also be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Install adequate grab bars throughout the bathroom. Don’t worry that it will look like a hospital. There are many fashionable grab bars now made with attractive decorative finishes. The kitchen is another area which should get particular universal design consideration. Standard-height countertops
can be difficult to work on for someone who has reduced mobility or is in a wheelchair. To make your new home universal, consider installing countertops at two different heights with a sink in each one. Locating the cooktop and oven in a kitchen island can increase their accessibility. Strong concrete countertops can be used with decorative wooden edge trim. The trim can be heavy and designed to also function as a grab bar. Also, consider the types of handles on the drawers so someone with severe arthritis can still open them. Homes are typically designed with a window over the sink and cabinets high over the countertops. A universal design would be lower cabinets above and behind the sink with the windows above reaching to the ceiling. The same is true for cabinets above the rest of the countertops. In a two-story home, also consider providing space for an elevator. It is a small unit about the size of an average closet. Until you need an elevator installed, this area on both floors can be used as closets for storage. Send your questions to Here’s How, 6906 Royalgreen Dr., Cincinnati, OH 45244 or visit www.dulley.com.
