Forslin ‘lives to deliver’ Major in making a difference When he was 4 years ‌ old, Jeremy Forslin knew he wanted to fly, but it was the Iowa Lakes Community College aviation program in Estherville that gave him his wings. Now a FedEx Boeing 777 first officer, Forslin boarded an airplane for the first time as a small child, heading to Colorado to visit his grandparents. On that trip, not only did the Minnesota boy get to fly on a plane, but his grandfather, a chief inspector mechanic for United Airlines, gave him an inside look at the industry. “He would take me each Sunday to see the big planes up close,” Forslin said.

budget was my target, and my high school counselor suggested Iowa Lakes.” Forslin graduated from Iowa Lakes in 1996. He earned his bachelor’s degree and returned to the college as a flight instructor. After that, he flew cargo and people in everything from charter jets to air ambulances, before he got the call from FedEx. Now married, Forslin is thrilled to be at FedEx, flying an international route, where this month he may see Germany, France and the United Arab Emirates. “I’ll be gone 10 days, and then I’m done for the month,” said Forslin. “This Taking flight was a hard job to get, and I “I knew I wanted to fly, feel very lucky.” but I had to pay for my own schooling,” said Forslin. “A Flying blind great aviation program on a Forslin joined Iowa

Lakes’ aviation program without even visiting the campus, based on the recommendation of his high school counselor. “I signed up blind, and in hindsight, I could not have made a better decision,” Forslin said. “Throughout my career, I’ve met pilots who paid 20 times what I paid, and it gave them no advantage over me. All they gained was debt.” Forslin appreciated the one-on-one instruction at Iowa Lakes. “I’m still friends with a lot of people I met at Iowa Lakes,” said Forslin. “You don’t get that at a big school. …I had my license within two months.” For more information on the Iowa Lakes aviation program, visit www.iowalakes.edu.

‌In a patient room at UnityPoint Health—St. Luke’s, a respiratory care student coaches an elderly man with pneumonia through a breathing treatment as a seasoned respiratory therapist watches, ready to offer guidance. Meanwhile, in St. Luke’s Birth Center, a nursing student shares in the excitement of a baby’s birth. And in the Radiology department, a radiologic technology student helps position a teenager injured in a car accident for an X-ray that will help St. Luke’s emergency physicians determine the extent of the teen’s injuries. Throughout St. Luke’s Hospital and beyond, students from St. Luke’s College spend a great deal of their education working side-by-side with experi-

enced healthcare providers, gleaning expertise, staying updated on the latest medical advancements and caring for patients. “The fact that we are a health system-based college means that our students have early and consistent access to clinical learning experiences in inpatient, outpatient and clinic settings,” says Michael Stiles, St. Luke’s College Chancellor. “In all of our programs, our students find themselves in clinical areas, working with patients in their first semester.” This hands-on experience has many advantages, Stiles says. “Because our clinical experience is provided predominantly in the acute care environment of a hospital, we’re modeling behaviors for students in those

settings, letting them observe and learn from quality healthcare providers throughout Unity Point Health—St. Luke’s. Plus, getting them in the hospital early in their course of study helps validate the students’ commitment to a career in service to others. “Because St. Luke’s College is health-system based, we are part of each and every technological advancement that is introduced into patient care, whether it be in the Birth Center, the Emergency Department, or in Surgery,” Stiles says. “When there’s an advancement in technology, our faculty and students are among the first to know about it and see how it is helping St. Luke’s improve the quality of healthcare it offers to the Siouxland community.”
