“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord. – Jeremiah 29:11-14
IGNITING A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS
AMY BONKOSKI
Discovering the programs that the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (GFP) offers has opened a new world to me, ignited a new love & passion inside of me, and helped me discover hobbies I want to share & experience with others.
In August I was able to attend the Becoming an Outdoor Woman (BOW) weekend where I learned an incredible amount of skills for outdoor sports and gained the confidence to pursue these skills further. One class I took that weekend was teaching me how to shoot a shotgun. I had never shot or even held a shotgun before but at the class I became well versed in what gauge and what type I felt comfortable with. I tried shooting at least half a dozen different types of guns that GFP brought for the weekend. That opportunity was an amazing way to start off my experience with shotgunning and I left that course with a desire to continue learning and experience more.
A short while after my first time handling a shotgun, my husband and I had the opportunity to get away for a weekend pheasant hunt, provided by GFP as well as Pheasants Forever. This was an incredible first exposure and introduction on our state’s well-known sport of pheasant hunting. It was on this weekend hunt with GFP that I had further one on one instruction on using a shotgun, learned how to pheasant hunt and was able to shoot my first bird. This ignited a love for this sport. I am hooked.
One thing I have been taught with attending different courses, events, and classes is that surrounding yourself with a supporting community is so important in continuing the skill just learned. I was able to attend yet another pheasant hunt at a preserve, provided by GFP and brought 3 of my close girlfriends along so they could learn too. Now they are hooked.
It is through these amazing opportunities that I have the community to carry on these skills I’ve learned. I also now have the confidence to teach my children the great sport I have grown to love. Because of the instruction I had received, I felt comfortable enough take my daughter out for a quick pheasant hunt one afternoon. I knew enough to teach her the basics of pheasant hunting and though we didn’t come home with any birds I am proud that I showed her, and will continue to show her, that a woman, her mother, can be a hunter too.
“Two shots, Two jakes” – Amy’s new shotgun skills came in handy during her first turkey hunt this spring!
