Chen Siqi

The main goal of my project is to design a Language Campus for the Chinese teenager immigrations settle down in Germany (10 to 18 years old). Sustainable and flexible are the two architecture elements I’m going to achieve during my design process

What is Banana case? The name of my project banana case comes from a typical Chinese joke. For a long time, we called the oversea Chinese banana. Though they have the same yellow skin color as us, deeply in their mind, in order to adjust to the new society around them. They transform their thought more similar to western people, white people. (The joke is rude, but tells directly the dilemma of immigration, Identity transition. I use this joke only to add the interestingness of my project and use it as a symbol of my project. It’s nothing about discriminate or try to defined people by color. ) And there is a magic invention in Japan used to keep the fresh banana called banana case. So I used this as the title of my project, trying to design relax and comfortable cases for my young bananas.

Why Banana case? The Chaos rising of New money in China are well known by all over the world in the few years .According to the The Chinese Affluent Report of 2015, Though, 60% of the affluent haven’t immigrated yet, 76% of them are planning or already sent their children abroad for the better prospect. As the description of the report Germany is their first choice for Europe. The special background of Germany is that you have to learn an extra language before you come and for the previous History and society construction it’s not easy for the foreigners, es-

pecially the teenager immigration to adjust to the country.

How do I build the banana case? The background of my project is the hot spot that happening now. So I start my project with a designed society survey from the existing immigrations from my country, I used the society software such as: Facebook, renren (Chinese Facebook) WhatsApp, Weichat (Chinese WhatsApp) and QQ. The survey contains 5 simply questions: Q1: When did you come to Germany? How old were you at that time? Q2: In your opinions, what’s the differences between German and China? Q3: What did you do actively to adjust Germany life? Q4: What did you do passively to adjust Germany life, or is there something you still refuse to change? Q5: Do you have some advises for the language school or the foundation? Finally I got 50 effective samples after the shaker test: *They are between 10 to 18 years old. *they all came to Germany after 2003 and they already be here for at least 6 consecutive months. *There are 24 girls, 25 boys and one transgender (from boy to girl in her process of surgery now) *None of them came here with their family. They all came alone, or with the friends of their age. By the statistical analysis of the survey I found the parts they mainly care about: The way of thinking Education Hobby Food 7

Shopping Drug or drink problem Life speed Awareness of sex

After that I tried to feedback the research results to the structure of my design.

How does Banana case looks like? Where is the banana case? I chose the site in Kreuzburg, Berlin. I’m familiar with this area. This part may be the most multi-culture area of Berlin. People of this area are really from all over the world. People here are friendly and for the other side as an area that becoming more and more popular but not yet. The cost of life here is still cheaper than other place. There are also a lot of international schools located here.

CHINESE IMMIGRATION SURVEY

Chapter.1

CHINESE IMMIGRATION SURVEY/BANANA SURVEY analysis of a 50 effective question paper

In order to have a directly, clear and real knowledge of my teenager Banana, I design the question paper (which I give a nick name of my survey: Banana Survey)to connect these five actors: School, Local people, Germany, Positive banana ,negative banana and other as and I abstract them to the following five questions: Q1: When did you come to Germany? How old were you at that time? Q2: In your opinions, what’s the differences between German and China? Q3: What did you do actively to adjust Germany life? Q4: What did you do passively to adjust Germany life, or is there something you still refuse to change? D1: Gender distrubution of Banana Survey

Q5: Do you have some advises for the language school or the foundation? The survey was last for 6 months from 09.2014 to 03.2015.I use the popular social website (Facebook and Renren) and mobile social software (WhatsApp and Weichat) to collect the results. I sent in total 100 question papers by messages and emails and finally got 87 back. To make my survey more reasonable I did a shaker test to pick out the sample with the following conditions: • Age between 10-18,when they came to Germany • Came to Germany after 2003 and already be here for at least 6 consecutive months. • Finished the paper • Didn’t came here with their family

D2: Age distrubution of Banana Survey

• They all have education here or continue their education here 13

Finally I picked 50 effective papers and (D1-D2) is the analysis diagram of them. From the diagram you can tell there are 24 girls, 25 boys and one transgender (from boy to girl in her process of surgery now), I try to choose the sample from every age around 10 to 18. By the statistical analysis of the survey I found the primary society parts they feel problems to adjust to the Germany society (D3): The way of thinking: 44% Education problem: 40% Hobby: 28% Food: 24% Shopping: 24% Drug or drink problem: 20% Keep distance/ social problem 20% Keyword of the impression of German: rigid, independent, lonely.

D3:Primary promblem for Banana to adjust the society

Life speed: 12% Awareness of sex: 10% And also another diagram of the common advises they give to the language campus (D4): Flexible course for different level language learner 60% Have more activities at weekend that also have local Germen to take part in 50% German movie night 30% Special apartments for music and art students 30% Separate space for gym and activity space 15% Use Chinese teacher to teach grammar 10% Nearby apartments for students 10% D4:Primary advises for Banana to school 14

DISIGN ANALYSIS concept

IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL

FLOWER My concept is from the book of one of my favorite artist, Henry Darker’s unfinished book In the realms of the unreal: it’s a science fiction novel for children and the most powerful super child in this fantastic world was someone who has the flower butterfly wings. Children are the future of us, I think no matter where are we from, we all have this similar words in our own language.

Children are the future of the world, no matter where are they from or where are they going to move to. To design the shape of the building is not only for my concept but also for the flexible idea the leaf of the flower could also be my flexible unit and the center of the flower is the core. For this kinds of opinions, may reminds us the failure of metabolism. This kind of structure must be failed because it usurps urbanism. Though it’s formally complex, could adjust to the city such as the embrace of density, compression, intelligent and shared infrastructures and also a careful integration of landscape and ecological system. But the problem is that the building can’t be complete independent from the urban system. The building or the city can only be smart when we consider the individual as having agency within the city.
