ABOUT SISB PRACHA UTHIT â–Ş SCHOOL STORY

Founded in 2001, SISB currently has five campuses in Thailand. It adopts the Singapore and UK curricula as the foundation for teaching and learning. The SISB name is inspired by our first campus, the Singapore International School of Bangkok (2001), the first Singapore International School that was established in Thailand, pioneering the Singapore education curriculum. Singapore International School of Bangkok was founded through the cooperative efforts of a group of Singaporean and Thai parents who were keen to invest in an institution to provide their children with quality education that develops fluency in English, Chinese and Thai languages. Motivated by their beliefs in the merits of the Singaporebased curriculum, they established SISB in 2001. SISB provides a standardised curriculum underscored by the principles of the Singapore education system and consistently delivers high quality education that many have come to trust of SISB. Through a broad-based and unique multi-lingual curriculum, SISB offers effective learning environments, opportunities and challenges to foster students as lifelong learners and future leaders. With more than 1,600 students of over 30 nationalities, and strong teaching and support staff hailing from over 20 countries, the SISB community is inspired by a global

outlook and enriched by cultural diversity. SISB upholds the reputation of the globally renowned, excellent education system of Singapore and holds the duty to contribute positively to the development of education in Thailand. With the rapid growth of its student population, SISB identified the need to expand its campus facilities. On 7 June 2012, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the Grand Opening of SISB Pracha Uthit campus, a new campus spanning 17,000 square metres in Pracha Uthit. The campus features SISB Preschool, well-equipped classrooms, a library, science and computer laboratories, a multi-purpose hall, basketball court, swimming pool, playgrounds and offers full-fledged curricula for students from ages 2 to 18. It also has a 1.25-rai SISB Building in Pracha Uthit (built-up area 2,200 sqm), which serves as the head office for the SISB Group and also features a dedicated compound for the Nursery 1 students of SISB Pracha Uthit.

Last year also saw the completion of the new Secondary School complex, a THB 770 million project measuring 9.5-rai (built-up area 26,000 sqm). It caters to 800 more students, with extensive facilities such as a Sports Complex, a 25-metre swimming pool, a 407-seat Creative Arts and Media Centre and boarding facilities that can accommodate up to 800 students. PRIMARY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we have successfully completed yet another hectic academic year. We mourned the loss of a great beloved King, King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, and welcomed the new King Maha Vajiralongkorn. We had numerous interesting programmes and activities throughout the whole year. SISB has just celebrated its 15th anniversary held together with the soft opening of the new secondary campus which boasts of first-class sports and performing arts facilities. Last year was a transitional period where we made numerous changes. This year we have consolidated and further developed them. The 5 Strategic Thrusts of Quality Teaching and Learning, Quality Staff, Quality Students, Quality Resource Management, Quality Parental and Community Partnership, which we have crafted have guided us well and this will continue to be our compass for the next five years. Below are some of the numerous new initiatives that were implemented and greatly enjoyed by the students: •

CECILIA NG PRINCIPAL, PRIMARY SECTION •

Stellar - Strategies for Teaching English Language and Reading. This programme for the Pr 1-2 emphasises on authentic experiential learning, engaging the students in reading and understanding. As part of their learning journey, lessons were conducted in Lumpini Park and students wrote about their field trips to Safari World, Royal Thai Air Force Museum, and Kids Science Discovery Museum. Residential Trips for Pr 3 to Pr 6. Our students went to Horseshoe Point, The Pines, Nakon Nayok and Rayong for their Residential trips. We have received very good feedback from students who thoroughly enjoyed the trips. These trips had tremendous support from our students and parents. They provide our students with character development, focusing on collaboration and working together harmoniously and cohesively. These are excellent life skills needed by the students to prepare them for 21st century. We are into the third year of Prefectship and our prefects have done us proud. Besides their prefectorial duties of looking after the students and ensuring that all is well, they have also presented on various current affairs issues eg Slimes,Road Safety, Planets. Good job, Prefects! Maths Trails which tested students on their creative problem solving skills. They are given real life situations which are not in the textbook, and have to find solutions. These activities brings out the teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in the students. Students were required to present their findings to their peers and teachers.

As part of our objective to engage parents in their students’ learning, for the first time, SISB organised a series of Math workshops for our parents to learn and experience the frustrations and joys of Maths. We flew in a trainer from Singapore, and the parents had fun learning together with their children and teachers. Parents can understand better the rigours their children are facing, and this rigour and resilience will make their children stronger! The Science Competition is an annual school event whereby our Primary 3 to 6 students are posed a challenge and they have to use their creativity and process skills to complete the challenge. This year’s competition centred around the theme ‘Creative Construction’ and our students had displayed strong leadership and communication skills. Innovation Convention for the Primary 4 students, of which every student was given the opportunity to invent new products for our everyday life. This has provided them with the opportunity to display their inventive spirit and entrepreneurship, preparing them for the job market. The production of “Jungle Book” was a huge success and what made it more memorable was the artistes were mainly from the lower primary and these students were really great as they demonstrated confidence and articulated well. I am proud to congratulate our students for the excellent external achievements: Outstanding achievements in International Singapore Maths Competition (ISMC). SISB took part in this International Math Competition for the second year. More than 12000 students from all over the world participated in this competition. In total, we acquired 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 11 Bronze medals, the largest number of medals in Thailand, emerging Champion amongst the schools in Thailand. We also emerged as the Champion school in Thailand, beating over 12,000 students. Numerous awards from Sports: 1st Futsal U9 ISAA, 1st Futsal U9 ISAA 1st Swimming Under 9 ISAA 2nd Swimming Under 11 ISAA 2nd Overall Swimming with a total of 30 gold, 48 silver and 19 bronze Many awards in Gymnastics and other external competitions I would like to specially credit the members of the PST whose contributions have added another dimension to the vibrancy of SISB. Your presence at all our functions, your support at the Family Fun Fair have greatly benefited the fun learning aspect of education. You have played a critical role in complementing us. It has also provided the platform for family bonding as well as networking amongst the parents. We are elated that the present committee would be staying and more parents have come on board. Well done, PST! We hope to see more of you next year. Together We Soar And Achieve!

NURSERY & KINDERGARTEN PRINCIPAL’ MESSAGE Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. - Malcom S. Forbes IEducation is the most powerful tool in the world. It is a powerful tool which can be used to change the world. Today, with the fast-moving society, and influence of social media, we are looking at a very different future of the world. The future world is a place that our children will be influenced by and contributing to. ISB truly believes that providing holistic education in a safe and secure environment will enable our students to succeed and excel in the future world. My 10-year journey with SISB has seen colossal growth and improvements not only in facilities but also in the excellent education we offer our students. Today, I am very privileged to still be here to try and make a difference in the lives of my students. Working together with parents to provide the right fit for every child has been so rewarding that I hope to see the trust in the school and in me grow exponentially. Parents have given SISB and I their trust in ensuring that their children are safe and are educationally achieving their potential, and I hope this will allow us to move forward as a family.

NARISA LERTNAMWONGWAN PRINCIPAL, NURSERY & KINDERGARTER

Hand in hand we will step forward into a new year!

SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Academic Year 2016 - 2017 has come to an end. At the beginning of the Academic Year, we moved into state-of-the-art facilities. Students and teachers now have access to five new buildings which include a six-floor Academic Building, two Boarding Houses with canteen, a two-storey Sports Complex with a swimming pool and a five-floor Creative Arts and Media Centre. The facilities are designed to support 21st century learning and teaching. The teachers and students made full use of these new facilities in the past year. In the 2016 IGCSE examination results, there was a 100% pass rate of grades C to A* in 15 subjects and 12 out of 22 subjects had at least 50% of grades A or A*. 99.3% of all grades were E or higher. Combining IGCSE examination results from 2015 and 2016, special congratulations go to Thyme who scored a total of 9A*s, Vincent 8A*s and 2Bs, Shirley 6A*s, 3As and 1B and Yuki 6A*s and 3Bs. We are also proud of our A-levels students too. They obtained a 100% pass rate in 3 out of 4 subjects and a 67% pass rate of C - A* in 3 out of 4 subjects. Well done, Win, for obtaining 2As, 1B and 1C. In external competitions such as the World Scholar’s Cup, ISAA, and 14th Singapore Open Gymnastics Championships, many of our students had done well. Our students also put up a big drama production “Phantom of the Opera” in our Performance Auditorium at the Creative Arts and Media Centre under the guidance of teachers Karl and Stefan. It was an immense success that will stay in our memories forever. Next to this, the Residential Trips and the International Awards were also carried out and would continue in the next Academic Year. New developments in the next Academic Year will be in the form of a Learning Support Centre and the introduction of a Dean of Students working closely with students and Form Tutors in giving pastoral care and support to the students. Also, students will have the opportunity to sign up for After School Activities. These could be extra academic subject support, arts, sports or ICT activities. I wish all students, parents and teachers a restful summer break and we look forward to seeing you back at the start of the next Academic Year with more exciting activities and programmes.

REFLECTIONS

148 SISB PRACHA UTHIT

Y11 GRIFFIN Chitpanya Apisaksirikul (Erick) Time sure flies during my stay here in SISB. I must admit that this is the best school I have ever been in during my time as a student. I would surely miss the times I have spent here with the lovely teachers of SISB and my wonderful friends. I never wanted this day to come but it is just a part of our life that we must accept and move on. The strength in each school is just like what the Jungle Book said “the strength of the wolf is the pack and the strength of the pack is the wolf”, which truly represents the teamwork and efficiency represented by the students here. I want everyone to know that SISB is a place filled with warmth and care and the love that is in the air could clearly be felt as you breathe your first breath in SISB. Thank you for all the love you have given me, SISB, and with the love I have received I would make sure to share it with others along my journey into adulthood. So Lastly I would just want to thank everyone again especially my parents.

TNattanun Thirasuntrakul (Nutty) I really cannot believe that I’ve already been in SISB for 9 years. Time just flies so fast! During those years, I have met many fantastic friends as well as many unforgettable teachers. Without a doubt, I have been taught countless valuable lessons during my time in this splendid school. Unfortunately, everyone and everything is bound to change as time goes on and I won’t be able to stay with my precious friends forever. I can only move on, and that’s exactly what I shall do. I will use the priceless knowledge and lessons that I have learnt to strive forward. Nevertheless, I will never forget the good times that I have had during my time in this school.

Trinath Saenchalerm (Book) I have been in this school for about 2 years. It is quite a short period of time but I have gained many things, not only good teachers but also good friends. When I came to this school, I can speak only basic English. With time, I have improved with help from my friends. They taught me so many things that will be useful in my life. I also want to thank my school for giving me good memories.

YEARBOOK 2016-2017 149

Y11 GRIFFIN Kumpol Sae-Ma (Golf) I am really proud to be part of SISB. Before entering SISB, my education level was very low but with all the support and love from my teachers and friends, I succeeded and am able to join one of the best universities of Thailand (Chulalongkorn university). SISB has brought me a lot of happiness, and we are one big family in SISB. Every teacher, staff and friend will be in the best part of my memory, for all the love and support that they have given to me Thank you .

Kunanon Naksomboonchai (Guitar) When I studied at SISB, I learnt many subjects in Year 8, and from Year 10 to 11, I chose the subjects that interested me. I feel that school is about the friends you make, and I have learnt many things and made many good friends in SISB.

Nuttapath Lohaphantakit (Seen) SISB is the place where knowledge meets friendship. I have been studying in SISB for almost 8 years now and the time flies so fast. In the past, the school was quite small so I got to know different year group as well. Students at SISB are bounded by an unbreakable friendship and teachers are kind and effective. SISB helps me in maths, science and language skills. SISB not only teaches me academic skills but they also help me to have a more social life. Lastly, I would like to say “Thank you to all my friends, teachers and staff who supported and helped me during these years.

150 SISB PRACHA UTHIT

Pakin Limkangwanmongkol (Kin) One of the main reasons why I enjoy being a part of the SISB community is the excellent friends and teachers here. I have been in SISB for 4 years and my motivation to keep enjoying myself has never wavered. This school has taught me what it feels like to develop strong and unforgettable bonds with other people. From strangers to acquaintances and from acquaintances to valuable friends. Together, we have conquered many challenges and obstacles and strengthened the bond we call friendship. In the end, all of us have taught one another a very important lesson: to always remain resilient and never give up. Undeniably, this is one of the many significant life experiences I shall never forget.

xxxxxx xxxxxxx (xxxx) xxxxxxxxxx

Pongsak Sawattawong (Yong) Don’t let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be one of the great experiences of your life. This is what I learnt from SISB.

YEARBOOK 2016-2017 151

Y11 MERLION Wisin Toh (Ah Loong) My experience in SISB has been quite rough for the past 11 years. However, thanks to that, I actually got the chance to learn from my mistakes. Without SISB, I would never have met all my closest friends. I feel very disappointed about the fact that we have to split up and walk our own paths one day

Terawat Sinsudtipong (Sun) I had fun with my studies.

Phonthita Sae-Li (Kitty) Now we are here, at the final station. It has been 4 years since I started in SISB, the place full of so many great memories that I can never forget. I was from a Thai school, and transferring to an international school was a big chanage for me. The atmosphere, curriculum, and peers were overwhelming and unfamiliar. Of course, the path was not sprinkled with rose petals. During Year 8, my grades were horrible as I received F in my report cards. I had to admit that sometimes I feel discouraged as I thought getting an A* was impossible. I begun by imagining the impossible and ended by accomplishing the impossible. I would like to thank all my teachers who have supported and shaped me into the person I am today. Thanks to my friends who stuck with me through up and down and stayed by my side all along. Lastly, thank you, SISB, for enabling me to meet all these people.

152 SISB PRACHA UTHIT

Worapas Pruktipinyopap (Note) After studying in this school for many years. I have faced many challenges and regrets with my friends. And now, it’s time for everyone to separate and follow their dreams. I will treasure all these precious memories of mine and hope that we all can meet one another again someday. I really enjoyed these past few years.

Paksupang Phetpanlop (Noinae) I am beyond excited to dive into a new chapter of my life but, at the same time, I am extremely nervous because SISB has been a very big part of my life, for a really long time. During my time at SISB, I have bloomed into the person I am today. Most importantly, I have met the best people here, the ones who believed in me even when I don’t believe in myself. From the teachers who not only lectured me but also taught me about life and all of its glory, to friends who I know for a fact will be with me along every step of the way long after this chapter closes. And I cannot express enough how grateful and thankful I am to have these lovely people by my side, through thick and thin. From day one until now, my time in SISB has been filled with nothing but fond and genuine memories that are mine to treasure, forever.

Egbert Panitsamai (Egbert) Although I attended this school for only two years, I met different friends and learnt many different things in the two years so I feel very enriched.

YEARBOOK 2016-2017 153

Y11 MERLION Phatchara Mingmuangthai (L) I have been in SISB for 6 years. There are a lot of good friends here. All the teachers are kind and helpful. I feel that this school has given me a lot of good and new experiences.

Sirasit Maneekobkulwong (Kimcheng) Thank you SISB for the good times, memories, and allowing me to meet a lot of good friends.

Joyful Adonrei Pablo Maclang (Joyful Adonrei) Two years may seem like mere moments compared with an entire lifetime, but these two years I spent at SISB have allowed me to make memories that would stay for eternity. I was able to know new companions who I’m sure will continue to be trustworthy friends for me in the future. I was able to cultivate my athletic and social skills. I had a blast in SISB. Although it saddens me that the class will split apart, I am more JOYFUL for the memories we all shared.

154 SISB PRACHA UTHIT

Changcheng Ma (Chang Jiang) I think the most important part of our life is spent at school. During this period we learn almost all the good things that we should acquire. School is the training ground for all virtues that make a good man. Here we first learn how to live a disciplined life. We read together, we sit together and we play together. I’ve gained lots of things that I never knew from this school but now I have to move on to an even brighter future. Thank you for everything, SISB and the teachers who had taught me and also my friends!

Yi-Houng Lu (Louis) It has been 12 years since I started in SISB. I have been a quiet person since kindergarten and I was not active. As time passed, I started to have more and more confidence to speak with my classmates. I had lots of fun in school especially with the events that the school organises and I hope there are more events in the future.

Supasuta Kowithananont (Sara) I came to SISB having a D in Mathematics, a C in Chinese and a B for all three Sciences. I got bullied for two years straight, and did not even have one friend to eat lunch with. I faked diarrhoea to avoid two weeks of class and, on other times, malinger to stay at the nurse room. I got called to the principal’s office twice, almost even got suspended once. But I got myself together and lifted my GPA to a 3.91. I will always remember both the good and the bad experiences here at SISB. A big thank you to the nurse who bore with my countless visits to the nurse room. My friends will always have a special place deep in my heart, and thank you for making so many ordinary moments, extraordinary. Lastly, I would like thank all my teachers for always inspiring me, always pushing me to my full potential and always guiding me to the light - my compass rose.

YEARBOOK 2016-2017 155

Y11 MERLION Emiri Hiraoka (Emiri) I’ve been in SISB for 11 years and along the way, I came across many people who came and left. This year is going to be tougher than before because most of my friends are leaving. But It has been a long fun ride.

Kanitnuch Kerdted (Piam) The school, as I often find myself referring to as “our school”, has undeniably been one of the factors in shaping who I am today, since the day I stepped into its grounds 11 years ago. SISB, and especially the many I am fortunate enough to acquaint with over the years, have been with me for a significant portion of my life. I can safely say that I have been with the school as it has been with me. I have seen numerous changes that SISB has underwent, the more fruitful ones and ones that are not so ideal. Changes, either for the better or the worst, can be considered as progress all the same, the only difference being the direction it is heading towards. I am glad to be able to observe this progress first hand, a front row seat I am ready to pass on to the next batch of students. I have had my share of the pleasurable experiences the school had offered me, and I am ready to move forward, to make use of what I have been so generously given and make my mark on this world.

Jarinthorn Jeungsmarn (Ing) Change is hard at first, messy at the middle and gorgeous at the end. Hence, I believe that SISB is currently going through the middle stage. Nothing good ever comes from the comfort zone and I truly understand that, but change doesn’t always lead to a greener grass as many would imagine. Over the years, SISB had rose to be a much larger and famous school and at this point, it has become completely different from the one I knew 10 years ago. As someone who has been here since the very beginning, I feel proud and a little shaken by what the school has become. I just have to understand that my time at SISB has run its course and that it’s time for me to move on as well.

Nevertheless, SISB has shaped my whole childhood. It has introduced such amazing friends and teachers to me and I am eternally grateful for that. I have grown so much and it is all thanks to everything that SISB has given me.

156 SISB PRACHA UTHIT

Kornchai Kitikongnopakorn (Guan-Yi) It has been a very long ride. This place has been my second home and a very cherishable memory that I will keep for the rest of my life. Throughout my years in SISB, I have come across great friends and teachers, many have been with me for a very long time. I am truly grateful for everything they’ve done for me. All the times that we spent together were all precious and perennial memories that will never be forgotten. The environment has changed a lot since I came here and it seems to me that the school will keep on improving for the many years to come. I can see that the school would like to seek the best for us and provide us with the best education. Although it feels quite sad to leave my second home, change is what we all have to face someday. It’s unavoidable. I hope the best for the school and to my classmates who will stay, good luck and may the force be with you!!

Zhengkai Chen (Zhengkai) It is my pleasure to study in SISB for 1 academic year. The thing that impressed me the most is that all the students in our class are kind and helpful. They are all good people. I would like to thank all the school staff for providing a perfect study environment for us.

Phutadol Boontem (Super) I enrolled into this school in 2008 and since then I have witnessed many major changes to the school in many ways. Nine years have passed and many teachers and students have left but I am still here. After this academic year, I’m changing schools. I will miss all my friends (some whom I have known since P2), as well as some teachers who have taught me and helped me with my troubles. Good luck to everyone and farewell.

Pornphawit Asawaroekwisoot (Phoom) I joined SISB in Primary 3. I came from a Thai school and I was scared at first. I was afraid to talk to anyone. However, my friends welcomed me and it instantly felt like home. All the good memories formed during my time in the school will never be forgotten and this school will always be my second home.

YEARBOOK 2016-2017 157

Y13 MERLION Punyathorn Jeungsmarn (Arm) It has been more than 10 years since I became an SISB student. Now, at the end of this magnificent journey, I recall the memories with great fondness. It is easy for me to remember the bitter moments, the heartaches and the obstacles. It is yet more difficult to realise that those things have only made me stronger. In this school, I have learnt to welcome failures as successes in disguise.

Pheamphimuk Phuaphanprasert (Pheam) My time at SISB was quite different from other students because I had only one classmate during term 2 and term 3. However, it is not as boring as anyone would expect. We share a lot of fun moments together and I am quite happy with the environment there.

Phat Yasothorn (Junior) I still remember the first day stepping into this school and failing all of the entrance exams. It was a lesson learnt for me that SISB had a very strong academic quality. Thus, I gave it a second try and got in with pride. Frankly speaking, I was hoping that SISB would drill me to accomplish my goal in becoming a doctor and the school did. Currently, I am a medical student of the University of Nottingham and Srinakharinwirot University. I would like to thank all teachers for giving it their best in unleashing my fullest potential in the academic area and my friends for sharing remarkable and memorable experiences.
