N

GOALS

This Competition project turned studio problem focused on the design of the Helsinki City Central Library within a vehement, architecturally well-established context. The new proposal was intended to not just be limited to the mere functions of a library, however large, but become a city center, a public domain and regulator that has thus far eluded the city of Helsinki.

TECHNIQUES

Folded Plate system - both formally & structurally; contextual postulates; critical figurations

percolate Advanced Architectural Design Studio I Autumn 2011 Project Type: Community Center, Urban Food Hub Location: Weinland Park, Columbus, Ohio, USA

GOALS

“percolate was driven by the current need of the Weinland Park community to honor its history and revive its identity as a productive neighborhood in the city of Columbus. To percolate is to permeate gradually, with slow integration into the physical and social landscapes of the existing community, in order to ensure not just local food and employment, but continued and fervent growth.

TECHNIQUES

Establishing urban connection; breaking boundaries; introducing public space; reestablishing ground + community facade

re_CONNECT Vertical Studio Spring 2011 Project Type: Cultural Tourism Location: Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China

Preliminary Modelling exercise - understanding the spatial and volumetric strategies employed on site and reconfiguring architectural systems through folding and enveloping techniques.

N

GOALS

ACADEMIC

This idea for “re_Connect” germinated from the discussion undertaken during the academic visit to the villages of Upper & Lower Jidao in Northern China, relative to the need of the community - economic growth & development.; this was tackled by providing solutions aimed towards promoting cultural tourism. The project also attempted to sew the rift between the two villages via strategic placement.

TECHNIQUES

Central location for cultural connect: Retaining agricultural landscape; Creating commerce opportunities

HOME | WORK Comprehensive Studio Winter 2011 Project Type: Housing for Urban Renewal Location: Franklinton, Ohio, USA

ACADEMIC

N

[viii]

GOALS

The Comprehensive Studio’s primary intent was to realize reasonable housing schemes for an underdeveloped, wrought-with-foreclosures’ region withing Franklinton, in the City of Columbus. This was accomplished through initial precedent architectural studies as well as research on the existing situation, and later developing these ideations into fullfledged housing projects, albeit with specific characteristics defined for each design group. Our theme for the studio, Home | Work, is reflective of the lifestyle of people who work from home, integrating office and home environments into a cohesive (and flexible) whole.

TECHNIQUES

Reallocating primary thoroughfare to organize home and work environments; re-establishing connections and adjacencies

FARM HOUSE Private Weekend Retreat August 2013 - Ongoing Project Type: Residence, Recreation Location: Ena Village, Gujarat, India

GOALS

The client’s brief was to develop a small farmhouse within at the Southern end of an orchard in the Ena Village near Bardoli. This was accomplished by establishin a simple system of rectangles as a conceptual idea and developing it both as an eclectic and a minimal experience - contradictory as it might sound, the organization of the system and an open environment helped generate reliable interfaces. This project is in its final design and development stages.

TECHNIQUES

PROFESSIONAL

PIPLOD PROJECT Retail & Showroom Project September 2013 Project Type: Commercial Location: Surat, Gujarat, India

GOALS

The site for this commercial project lies on one of the most important spines in the city of Surat. Hence, it was important to not only define characteristics of the system in plan but also to give it an identity and a sense of purpose within an urban fabric that is largely inconsequential. We tried to maximise floor area, while at the same time attempted a facade system with both functional and aesthetic characters, while at the same time reducing energy consumption on the South front that faces the street. The project is currently under review.

TECHNIQUES
