Ecological Infrastructure : Application in Zurich MArch Thesis Siti Samuel 2017

ECOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE : There are some conflicting issues between living and ecological condition in Zurich. The city’s fast growing population and continuous long-term urbanization has occupied most of its usable land resources. Today, the city stretches beyond the natural confines of hills. Open green areas are protected, but more and more used for construction. Since then, Zurich has loss numerous streamlines and destruction of natural contours, causing the increasing of surface run off water. This consequently will effect the soil condition exposing the delicate city to the risk of landslide and water level rising, and loss of green spaces. The modern solution for concentrating more and more people for housing or commerce has been the high rise and energy intensive building. However, with Zurich’s natural contours, tributaries, and soil fertility there is a lot opportunity beyond that. This research investigates the potential area in the city that is subjected to both risk and expansion. A wide range of study looking at density standards, design principles, architectural approach was carried out. Which then leads to the exploration of possibilities of adapting innovative ecological concepts as a solution to Zurich’s urban sprawl with an emphasize on addressing the issue of remediating the environmental risk Zurich is facing.

Residential Configuration Part 1 study has directed the study that the current pattern or the sustainability of residential expansion in Zurich is towards Low Rise High Density Terraced Housing. Low-rise, high density housing attempts to combine the best elements of both urban and suburban development schemes: a multitude of public transportation options, access to urban services, moderate scale, public open space and individualized dwellings. It can therefore reduce sprawl and efficiently use the limited space found in the urban environment, while also maintaining the street grid and pedestrian pathways. However, low-rise, high-density housing cannot be seen as a one-step cure-all for urban ills. Sensitive architecture must also be combined with well-financed governing institutions and deeply involved community organizations.

Low rise - high density - terraced housing Configuration

Social Landscape around major cities is often covered with slabs (balcony) providing no contact with the ground. While this configuration are in constant contact with nature, offers residents to stroll landscape terraces. Often associated to exclusive living spaces (holiday homes) making it less affordable. Thus there is a need for an economical and cost effective housing strategy approach.

Technical Although it is land concious, but structural requirements are reduced as the earth supports a portion of each floor. One of its critical requirement of terraced housing are the design of terrace itself. The terrace (access / balcony / corridor ) defines the social quality of the residential building.

Conclusion As the city of Zurich struggle with solutions to the housing shortage, this research has raised issues and matters that directs towards resolving it by looking at the current pattern of housing expansion and its ecological state.

The research eventually leads to the exploration urban low rise - high density housing. This typology has the potential of adapting a geometrical approach as each dwelling unit is subsequently direct contact with land. A kind or reworking of terrace typologies, terrace / courtyard hybrid typologies. This aims to remediate land condition as well as giving opportunities for urban expansion in the city. Other factors on the emphasis of affordable housing and increasing number of bedrooms also plays an important role in determining the housing configuration. The current stage of research ends with a masterplan drawing that demonstrates a balance in division of residential and natural elements. Giving a new vision of a district in the Zurich City. With the data and information gathered it hopes to give a guide on the urban expansion of any city with ecology and living constrains. However, there are so much potential to explore the configuration being integrated between living spaces and natural elements supporting the earth structure. Chapter 07 (Design principles) could be further explored on the design of housing units in terms of its form / geometry and materiality. With integration to the importance as an earth reinforcement based on the principles of water bearing capacity and load bearing. This thesis gave me the opportunity to explore a different perspective of architecture in terms of understanding a wider context of built environment; such as feasibility study, density, livability and social context. A productive change after 5 years of pure design in architecture.

INDUSTRIAL PLAYGROUND

INDUSTRIAL SPEILPLATZ

Zurich is the National Centre for creative industries. The economic focus of the community working in these industries are the creation, production, distribution of creative goods and services. Swiss have been producing handcrafted high-tech boards for over 100 years. However, the sport is less preferred and is losing its essence especially from the youth. This ‘Industrial Playground’ attempts to feature expert local craftsmen producing high-tech boards for the dying market. The proposal introduces a space of creation and play, in the midst of the dense city fabric. Taking the character of the location of Resiweiher, continous water source and the slope is seen as the primary potential. Forming a soft manmade landscape on the hill with a terrain for product testing ground. Thus the notion of ‘Industrial Playground’ uses culture as an instrument of transforming obsolete space. The merging of making, play and sport.

3. Next, they move into the material gallery to select from the finest snowboarding materials and customize a personal design to it. 4. The client will then get a glimpse of the production process of the desired snowboard in the factory. 5. While waiting for the completion of the product, the client has the option to stay over for the night at The Lade’s accomodation services. 6. The following day would present the client with the final product as intended and will be ready will be ready for pick up. 7. Finally, the client may go on a few rides to practice on the artificial skate park before purchasing the customized snowboard and heading off with a glitter smile.

“ The proposal initiates a space of creation and play within the midst of the dense city fabric. Adapting to the location of Resiweiher, continous water source and the hill slope were seen as the primary potential in forming a soft manmade landscape on the hill with a terrain for product testing.

The proposal incorporates well the idea of lightness and the exploration of flow in spaces taking account of the International Style of Modernism. The proposal hopes to portray the ideas of elevation, minimalistic aesthetic, protusion, and in the concept of open, airy spaces have been used throughout time, and are expected to only increase within architecture and design in the future.

The Athenaeum is a continuity of the new urban housing development reviving the north side of Argyle highlighting the identity of crescent and restoring the park of how it used to be as a ‘Pleasure Garden’. The clear, simple yet generous playful spaces were to contrast with the crowdedness and constriction of the West End part of Glasgow. Part of the facade is made or entirely of glass so that enough natural light would fill the main spaces of the Athenaeum. The opaque glass screen is an elegant way of shielding the lane from the street that runs through the back of the Athenaeum. The Athenaeum introduces the extention of the hidden lane by introducing a secondary lane called ‘Hiddenscapes’ that connects from Corruna St. to Kelvinhaugh St. through the play park and Argyle St. through Sandyford Memorial Church.

TRACING TRANG : KANTANG RAILWAY

The elaborate elevations of the railway station tells us that this building is a lot more than what it seems. The front porch greets potential customers with nationality as it bears the tricolour flag on its ridge. This historical building is definitely a pit stop for tourists and has gone through several events in the past 98 years, such as, the end of the Southern Line under the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The team’s responsibility at hand is to document this building in terms of readable architectural drawing files and an insightful heritage report. The railway station is made up of two parts; the main building and the platform. Outside that area, the additional buildings; the lavatory unit and the storage shack are also part of the station’s silhoutte. Structure and strength The entire railway station is an old Thailand timber style building. The construction details include timber walling with frames, timber fixed louvers, timber lattice screening, five timber door and window types, timber plank ceiling, wooden cornice, concrete asbestos kite-shaped roof tiling and intricate timber arches or brackets. The true strength of the sturdy railway station lies in its columns and posts. A more visible proof stability is shown in the various types of intricate brackets found throughout the building. Special Measurements There are many special structures that are unique to the railway station. The more special would be the majestic signboard that holds the name of the station and the brass bell. This is because they act as landmarks to passengers on the train as well as pedestrians and used up till today. Other structures include the inbuilt ticket puncher, transmitter and the olden day lamp post that functions as a traffic light. Most of them are kept in the Museum Room for public display.

CHOW KIT YOUTH CENTRE

Setting a stage for the adolescence Chow Kit Youth Centre is a proposed 2-storey designed to fit within in an urban setting with strategies of micro and macro context. It intends to encourage social engagement between the street children and general public. Site visit and interviews were done at KL Krash Pad, an existing youth centre to further understand the children’s need and aspirations. The approach of the building design is to provide a platform for children to come over after school as after school programs to learn and socialize. The youth centre aims to welcome visitors to visit and contribute by allowing an acessible ground floor design. The facade respects its neighbouring structures by continuing the 5-foot walkway from adjacent shophouses.

Theoretical Concepts Application in Design Concrete art often has a core visual reference to geometry whereas more general abstract art may find its basis in the components of the natural world. A formulation of a description of concrete art might include a considerable reliance on the formal qualities of an artwork. Theo Van Doesburg’s manifesto stated that art “should receive nothing from nature’s formal properties or from sensuality or sentimentality.

Formation of floor plan The architectural style of the building emphasizes the quality of vigorous and forceful desplayed by the use of concrete and strong geometry.

Free hand symbolism Study Models Cardboard and paper

One of the first instinct when designing the proposal was to include a high point. As a starting point, I scribbled a sketch and slowly forming a more definite design according to the site and building requirement. The right architectural representation of it is a tower. The tower comprises a staircase that connects to the upper level studio. It serves as a strategic advantage - a symbolism indicating its presence within the very dense area in the central of Kuala Lumpur.

Concrete Art

Art Concret/ Arte Concreta / Konkrete Kunst Concrete art is abstract art that is entirely free of any basis in observed reality and that has no symbolic meaning Concrete art is an art movement with a strong emphasis on abstraction. The artist Theo van Doesburg, closely associated with the De Stijl art movement, coined the term “concrete art” as he in 1930 founded the group Art Concret and articulated its features in a manifesto titled “The Basis of Concrete Art”, signed by four other artists of the group, including Otto G. Carlsund, Jean Hélion and Leon Tutundjian.

Concrete Art Manifesto

1.

Art is universal.

2. A work of art must be entirely conceived and shaped by the mind before its execution. It shall not receive anything of nature’s or sensuality’s or sentimentality’s formal data. We want to exclude lyricism, drama, symbolism, and so on. 3. The painting must be entirely built up with purely plastic elements, namely surfaces and colors. A pictorial element does not have any meaning beyond “itself ”; as a consequence, a painting does not have any meaning other than “itself ”. 4. The construction of a painting, as well as that of its elements, must be simpl and visually controllable. 5. The painting technique must be mechanic, i.e exact, antiimpressionistic. 6.

An effort toward absolute clarity is mandatory.
