SIUE Successful Communities Collaborative (SSCC) is a cross-disciplinary program that supports one-year partnerships between the University and a community partner to advance local resilience and sustainability based on community-identified environmental, social and economic issues and needs. Our mission is to connect communities with the students and faculty of SIUE. After a successful pilot year, we have identified the City of Alton as our SSCC partner for the 2018-2019 academic year. This year’s projects involve generating ideas for a marketing and branding concept, identifying existing and perceived barriers to business development, and developing a GIS surface management plan. Other potential projects focus on improving the quality of life for everyone in the community by taking steps to ensure residents can age in place, identifying outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors, and improving the walkability of neighborhoods. Follow our progress at siue.edu/successful-communities.
