OUR MISSION The mission of the SIUE East St. Louis Center is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in Greater East St. Louis in the areas of education, health, social services and the arts. The Center identifies urban community needs and opportunities through research and leverages resources to support students on campus and in the community.

OUR VISION The vision of the SIUE East St. Louis Center is to become a nationally recognized urban higher education campus that delivers innovative programs and excellent opportunities for post-secondary education. The Center shall prepare the Greater East St. Louis community for success in school, life and careers in a global and technologically advanced society.

SIUE EAST ST. LOUIS CENTER The SIUE East St. Louis Center has supported youth, adults and families in the Greater East St. Louis Community for more than 50 years. The Center is part of a historic, rich and vibrant community—and we are committed to being a neighbor residents can count on. We inspire individuals and families and help them lead successful and healthy lives. We provide highquality education and care for young children. We help teens prepare for college. We help young adults build skills that lead to success in college and better jobs. We offer high-quality, affordable health care. Located just 20 miles south of the SIU Edwardsville campus, the East St. Louis Center connects the community with the research, faculty, students and credibility that a nationally recognized university brings.

OUR PROGRAMS With a focus on inspiring and developing people and strengthening communities, the SIUE East St. Louis Center is dedicated to improving the lives of families and individuals from pre-school through adulthood in Greater East St. Louis. With an enthusiastic and dedicated staff, East St. Louis Center programs prepare more than 2,000 youth in grades Pre-K-12 each year for successful futures.


SUPPORTING SUCCESS SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start The SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start Program serves more than 1,500 families and youth from birth to age five including children with special needs in St. Clair County. The program includes 14 early childhood centers, seven managed directly and seven collaborations. Services include a rigorous school readiness program, educational programs for family members, and health and dental screenings. The ExceleRate Illinois Gold Circle of Quality is the standard for all SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start schools. The designation celebrates early learning providers who meet or go beyond the highest quality of early childhood education standards. Several Head Start parents and teachers have received Parent of the Year and Teacher of the Year state and regional awards in recent years. A full 80 percent of Head Start participants show mastery in five out of six standards across all age groups based on the nationally recognized Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment. SERVING SCHOOL-AGE YOUTH Project Success An after-school, tutorial enrichment childcare program, Project Success serves 102 children 5-14 years of age who are in protective custody and are referred by the Department of Children and Family Services. The program provides after-school tutoring, summer camp, enrichment activities, nutrition, field trips, athletics, music and dance to participating youth. Contact us: 618-482-8334 TRIO Upward Bound The SIUE East St. Louis Center manages three TRIO Upward Bound program grants that serve 245 high school students from East St. Louis, Cahokia, SIUE East St. Louis Charter, Brooklyn and Madison. Targeting low-income, and/or potential first-generation college graduates, the programs offer after-school, Saturday and summer programming that includes tutoring, enrichment, college prep counseling, college visits and ACT preparation. Each year, 95-100 percent of Upward Bound participants graduate from high school and are accepted into two- or four-year colleges. Recent Upward Bound graduates were offered a combined $3 million in college scholarships and enrolled for college at universities including SIUE, University of Missouri and Howard University. Katherine Dunham, the legendary dancer, anthropologist and social activist who made East St. Louis her second home in 1964, founded the Center for Performing Arts. Due to strong community support, programming is being restored and expanded. Each summer, approximately 100 youth ages 5-17 participate in a six-week, full-day summer program that includes exposure to Katherine Dunham Technique created by Katherine Dunham. BUILDING A HEALTHY COMMUNITY We bring important partnerships to the community. We connect people to resources that are essential to the well-being of strong youth, families and neighborhoods. All programs are conveniently housed on the East St. Louis Higher Education Campus.


PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School – Preparing students to be career- and college-ready upon graduation, the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School is a school of choice for families in the East St. Louis School District. SIUE WE CARE Clinic – A nurse-managed primary care clinic sponsored by the SIUE School of Nursing to provide care to diverse clients in the Greater East St. Louis region. SIU Dental Clinic – Residents of Madison and St. Clair counties—including children—can receive quality, affordable dental care provided by the SIU School of Dental Medicine. UMSL Optometry Clinic – Optometrists from the University of Missouri-St. Louis provide comprehensive eye care, including eye exams, disease diagnosing, and glasses/contact lens selection and fitting to Madison and St. Clair county residents. East St. Louis Community College Center – Kaskaskia College and Southwestern Illinois College offer certificate and associate degree programs and a variety of community college services to residents in the Greater East St. Louis region. Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP) – Implemented by the SIUE School of Nursing, SNAP enhances educational opportunities and graduation success rates of disadvantaged students. Early intervention strategies and support systems help students complete the nursing program and work as professional registered nurses. SIUE Institute for Urban Research (IUR) – The IUR shares innovative practices and engages in scholarly research, helping the community answer the tough questions involved with affecting change. SIUE Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – The SBDC provides training services and confidential counseling at little or no cost. Services include, but are not limited to, providing financial, marketing, production and business plan assistance.
