Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville since August of 2002. Dr. Hewitt previously served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh director of athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s initial charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 70’s and 80’s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. During the first six years of his directorship, 48 Cougar teams have competed in their respective Division II NCAA individual or team championships. Additionally, Hewitt helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st-place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to three top-15 and one top-10 finish in the last three years of SIUE’s Division II competition. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The pinnacle of SIUE’s Division II achievement was a national championship in 2007 for Softball--SIUE’s first national championship since May 1989. Beginning in the Fall of 2007, Hewitt’s new charge became preparing the Department to enter NCAA Division I play and securing conference affiliation. With the guidance of the SIUE Reclassification Workgroup and the lead role played by Chancellor Vandegrift, Hewitt was able to secure department-wide membership in the Ohio Valley Conference in July 2008 and in November of 2008 an affiliate membership for Men’s Soccer in the Missouri Valley Conference. Men’s Soccer and Softball are now active members in NCAA Division I and are eligible for post-season championships. The remaining sports will become active in Fall 2012. Dr. Hewitt is extremely proud of the academic performance continually achieved by the SIUE student-athletes as the program has transitioned to Division I. This past spring represented the eighth straight semester when the department’s cumulative GPA exceeded 3.0. During the transition to Division I, nearly 60 percent of the student-athletes had cumulative 3.0 or higher GPAs, more than 25 percent made deans’ lists, and no student-athlete has been placed on academic probation. Dr. Hewitt began his SIUE career in 1989 as an assistant athletic director. In that role, he played a major part as the University’s venue manager for the United States Olympic Festival ‘94 track and field and wrestling events. Since the fall of 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE including Acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation and Acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-present), Acting Alumni Director twice, and two stints as an Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Relations (1994-1998 and 2000-present). Dr. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager, and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1981 from the University of Central Missouri as well as a master’s degree in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his Ph.D. in education specializing in leadership theory and organizational competence at SIUC in 1994. Dr. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games, and as a member of the State Games of America Board of Directors. He is presently serving in his fourth term as a member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. Dr. Ed Hightower, Superintendent of District 7 and well-known NCAA basketball referee, describes Hewitt as a 24/7 guy. “Brad gives his university, his colleagues, his student-athletes, his community, and his friends’ enthusiasm, dedication, commitment and energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” In 2006, Hewitt graduated from the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute which provides specialized executive programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of North Carolina. A member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Hewitt has made leadership presentations multiple times for SIUE’s Kimmel Leadership Center as well as for conferences and universities around the country. Significant fund-raising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. From 1998 to 2007 Hewitt was directly responsible for securing several multimillion dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat Simmons/Cooper Baseball Complex, and the 6,000 sq. ft. softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a significant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowments from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused fund-raising efforts on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships and enhancing the facilities with the objective of recruiting nationally-competitive Division I student-athletes. During the past two years, Dr. Hewitt has overseen the planning, renovation, and expansion of the Korte Soccer and Track Stadium ($3 plus million), the Vadalabene Center Gymnasium and office renovation ($5 plus million), the baseball locker room project ($350,000), and the Vadalabene Center athletic locker room project ($1.2 million). www.siuecougars.com

2010 Cougar Women’s Soccer
2010 Cougars SIUE Women’s Soccer Prepares for Challenges in 2010 EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - With a roster full of battle-tested players, the 2010 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s soccer team looks to improve on its 3-10-2 record from a year ago. After opening the 2009 season 0-8-1, the Cougars bounced back to close the campaign with a record of 3-2-1 with quality wins against Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinalist Drake and Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Murray State. Despite having only four seniors on the roster this season, the Cougars return all but two players from last year, with the departures of Kelley Humphrey and Correen Roark to graduation. Included in the group of returners are SIUE’s top five scorers and seven of the nine players who recorded a goal in 2009. The experienced roster will provide third-year head coach Derek Burton with depth up and down the lineup. “Everything is moving up, and we are really excited about the season,” said Burton. “Our spring and off-season was very important for us and, we are looking for that success to carry over into this season. A focus this spring was improving our overall team defense, and we made strides in that area. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off there.” Burton enters the 2010 campaign with a career record of 11-15-2 in two seasons at the helm of the Cougar program as the team seeks a winning season for the first time at the Division I level. FORWARDS “The main goal this year is to get better at putting the ball into the back of the net,” said Burton. “We have to convert more of our chances.” Sophomore Kristen Dailey (Florissant, Mo.), who appeared in all 15 matches last season making six starts, will look to build on a solid season in 2009 where she tied for second on the team with two goals scored. Her first collegiate goal came as the game winner over Drake. Joining Dailey up top will be Meagan Iffrig (St. Charles, Mo.), a transfer from the University of Memphis and redshirt freshman Erin DiGiovanni (Rockford). “We have all the confidence in the world in our players. We just have to establish the confidence in training and bring it over to the game,” said Burton. “We are not going to have anybody who is a 15-goal scorer, but we may have four or five players score four or five goals.” “As far as scoring goals, we have got to look at it as a group effort. It’s a team thing, not an individual thing. With some of the scoring struggles we had last year, I think that everyone just wants to put a `W’ on the board.” Senior Kiara Akpore (Galesburg), who finished last season with five points, will rejoin the Cougars later this fall after fully rehabilitating her knee following off-season knee surgery. MIDFIELDERS “Depth in the midfield is going to be a strength for us this year,” said Burton, who brought in a number of recruits to add to the core of players already in
www.siuecougars.com
place. “This is a dynamic group with a lot of people with different types of qualities.” With a wide variety of playing styles, the Cougars “have the opportunity to dictate the way that we play in terms of our formation and tactically what we try to do,” said Burton. Seniors Ashley Davidson (Olathe, Kan.) and Chelsey Johnston (Wentzville, Mo.) provide experience and the ability to control the middle of the field. “We are looking for Ashley and Chelsey to establish their play and the work ethic that we need from all of our players,” added Burton. Davidson has appeared in 41 matches for the Cougars over the past three seasons, while Johnston has started every match for the last two seasons and finished 2009 with two goals and one assist for five points, which tied for second on the team. Last season’s leading scorer, junior Brittany Bodziak (Schaumburg), is back at SIUE and looking for a breakout year after finishing with three goals in 2009. “Brittany can be a real weapon for us this year and definitely a dangerous attacking player,” said Burton. “She suffered through some injuries last season but still managed to lead the team in goals and points.” Juniors Kaci Harkey (Bethalto) and Rachel Brcic (St. Louis) will press for time on the field in 2010 after playing significant minutes for the Cougars last year. Harkey made 13 starts and appeared in all 15 matches while Brcic played in 14 games. Adding to the depth in the midfield are returning sophomores Alexandria Brazill (St. Louis), Shanna Hutchison (Normal), Megan LeBaron (Grayslake) and Kristin Dierker (Groveland). All four players saw action a year ago and each will be asked to raise their game again this season to crack the lineup. A trio of capable midfielders in Sarah Doggendorf (St. Charles, Mo.), Hope Jones (Granite City) and Chelsea Smith (Collinsville) join the Cougars as incoming freshmen. “All three players fit right in with what we’re doing here because they are all very experienced, high-level players coming right out of high school,” said Burton. “They are all very different in terms of how they play and what they bring to the program, so it is going to be a great mix with our current players.” DEFENDERS Our back line is established. Even though they are young, in terms of class, they got a lot of experience last year and will continue to improve how they play together as a unit,” said Burton. Anchoring the talented group of defenders are senior Sade Akpore (Galesburg) and junior Devon Thomas (Brookfield) who have combined for 56 starts in their SIUE careers. “Hopefully, Sade will embrace her last season and want to go out with a bang, so I expect big things from her,” said Burton. “Devon is a true leader in the back for us and an extremely competitive athlete that wants to do whatever it takes to win, which is something our team can feed off.” Also returning to the Cougar defense is the sophomore duo of Jenny Humphrey (Edwardsville)
and Jennifer Tucker (St. Charles, Mo.), who made 14 and 13 starts, respectively, a year ago. “Jenny is emerging as a real shining example of hard work and discipline which shows in her play, while Jen is really dangerous attacking out of the back,” said Burton. “She is also as tough a customer as a soccer player can be on the field.” Joining the mix for Coach Burton is a pair of talented freshmen in Kourtney Price (Eureka, Mo.) and Mary Kate Reed (Mokena). “Kourtney brings a wealth of high school success and experience with her to SIUE after playing all around the country at a very high level,” said Burton. “She’s a gifted athlete who will be dangerous offensively as well as being a rock-solid defender.” “Mary Kate is another competitive, hard-working center back that is hungry to hit the field after transferring, and I think she gives us a lot of options in the back,” noted Burton. “We are going to have a good pool of players that are all very capable of playing in the back, and they are a group of hungry players that want to get one the field,” said Burton. GOALKEEPERS After playing significant minutes in 2009, junior Claire Lovercheck (Florissant, Mo.) returns to a familiar spot between the posts for the Cougars. Lovercheck has made 18 appearances in an SIUE uniform and looks to improve on a career record of 2-9-2. “Claire is a skilled goalkeeper with a lot of good experience. I expect her to lead by example in the back,” said Burton. “She is the type of the studentathlete we want in our program, and we have high expectations for her.” Backing-up Lovercheck will be sophomore Sarah Schuchard (Eureka, Mo.), who made one appearance last season. “Sarah is a great student and an extremely hard worker that will continue to improve this year,” said Burton. SCHEDULE SIUE has a mix of familiar programs and a few first-time opponents on its tough 2010 schedule. The Cougars have eight home games on the schedule, including three to start the regular season. SIUE faces South Dakota in the regular season opener with a 7 p.m. contest at Korte Stadium on Aug. 20. The Cougars also play Eastern Kentucky (Aug. 29) and Ball State (Sept. 3) on the season-opening homestand. “We are all excited about the challenge that lies ahead of us. Our 2010 schedule will be a test for sure. We have a lot of schools that are beginning to be familiar for us and a few programs we’ve never played,” said Burton. “All established programs, including two NCAA Tournament teams (Murray State and Illinois State) and a perennial Big 12 contender (Kansas), this schedule will provide our young program the type of tests we want as we continue working toward consistency,” Burton said.
