Since the time of his appointment, Vandegrift has been instrumental in guiding the University toward fulfillment of its vision to be recognized nationally, as a premier Metropolitan University, for the excellence of its programs and development of professional and community leaders. He developed a plan for achievement of the vision by the year 2015 that combines the values and goals of the University with knowledge gained from his 33year career in higher education. Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE since August 2002. Dr. Hewitt served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh Director of Athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 1970s and 1980s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. Since his start as the Director of Athletics, 37 Cougar teams have competed in their respective NCAA individual or team championships. Hewitt has helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to a 78th place finish in 2004, a 37th place finish in 2005, a 4th place finish in 2006, and an 11th place finish in 2007. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the program that produces the overall best finish in the league’s seven “core” sports. SIUE posted top five finishes in six of the seven sports that count in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, including conference titles in men’s soccer and softball. Also considered are volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. The pinnacle of achievement was a 2007 national championship in softball. In 1994, Hewitt, in his role as Assistant Athletic Director, served as the University’s venue manager for the United States Olympic Festival-’94 track and field and wrestling events. Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE including acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation and acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-2003), and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Athletic Development (1994-1998 and 2000-present). From 1995-1998 and 2000-2002, Hewitt was the internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of University Relations overseeing Alumni Services; SIUE Foundation; Public Affairs; Photographic Services; and University Graphics, Publications, and Printing. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri as well as a master’s in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in education at SIUC in 1994. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as a member of the State Games of America Board of Directors. He is presently serving his second term as a Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift, Jordan Faulkenberg, Athletic Director Dr. Brad Hewitt and member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. Head Coach Kyler Updyke. In 2006, Hewitt completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute which provides specialized executive management programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. Significant fundraising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. Since 2000 Hewitt was instrumental in securing several multi-million dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These facilities gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat SimmonsCooper Baseball Complex, and the 5,000 sq. ft. SIUE softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a significant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowment from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships. Hewitt and his wife Kay, a professional educator, reside in Edwardsville. Their daughter Loren is a 2007 graduate of SIUE and tennis alumnae, and their son Matthew is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a major in mechanical engineering.

Three different players won NCAA Division II singles titles from 1977 to 1983. Four different doubles teams earned national titles from 1979 to 1984.
Bob Meyers Bob Meyers guided SIUE women’s tennis to four consecutive national championships in 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. 1978 Team One of college tennis’s greatest dynasties began with the 1978 men’s tennis team. Juan Farrow and Arjun Fernando, both of whom were annually in the hunt for a singles and doubles national championship, led a squad which would start a string of seven consecutive national championships under SIUE Coach Kent DeMars. The other valuable members of the team included Brian Millar, Scott Whaley, Bill Rusick, Randy Houston, Kent Smith, and Alan Millar.
1979 Team Behind the duo of Juan Farrow and Arjun Fernando, the SIUE men’s tennis team captured back-to-back NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships at the Indian Rock Resort in Fairfield Bay, Ark. Farrow and Fernando swept the singles and doubles titles at the championships to lead SIUE to 21 points and were followed by San Diego with 15 points. After Farrow, the two-time defending NCAA singles champion, dominated his side of the bracket, he faced Fernando in the finals. Fernando upset his teammate 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. SIUE didn’t just depend on its top two players for the team title. Bill Rusick won three matches at the nationals and Raimo O’Jala won twice. Other key members of Coach Kent DeMars’ national championship team were Alan Millar, Raymond Kuzava, and Scott Whaley.

1980 Team With the cameras of ESPN rolling on the campus of SIUE, the heavily-favored Cougars overpowered Nicholls State 24-12 for its third consecutive NCAA Division II national championship. Coach Kent DeMars kept the Cougars on top with an impressive lineup that included Juan Farrow, Raimo O’Jala, Hugo Nunez, Garth Naumoff, Sujit Fernando, Ray Kuzava, and Jorma Leppanen. Farrow capped his career with his unprecedented third NCAA Division II singles crown. Farrow and Nunez combined for the NCAA doubles crown. Farrow became the second player in Division II history to win doubles crowns with different partners.
1981 Team SIUE easily won its fourth consecutive NCAA Division II men’s tennis crown by scoring 22 points over runners-up Rollins and Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) with 12 points. Ken Flach extended SIUE’s streak of national singles champions becoming the third SIUE player in five seasons to walk away with the individual title, winning all six of his national championship matches in straight sets. Flach and teammate Hugo Nunez competed in the singles final with Flach prevailing 6-4, 6-4. The duo advanced to the finals for the doubles championships. Doug Burke competed in the national singles tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals. 1982 Team With its fifth straight national team championship, SIUE set a new NCAA record. The five consecutive team titles broke the record for most consecutive national titles in any NCAA division. The old record was four titles when Southern California accomplished it from 1966 to 1969. The Cougars achieved its latest national title with the same type of flair, winning the team title 22-13 over runner-up California State-Bakersfield. Ken Flach repeated as the nation’s top singles player and continued his own streak of national tournament singles matches won to 12, defeating teammate Robert Seguso in the finals 6-2, 6-4. Flach added a national title in doubles with teammate Doug Burke. The 1982 men’s tennis team, coached by Kent DeMars, featured a deep lineup that included Hugo Nunez, Marc Sluszny, Ray Kuzava, Joe Vassen, Gary Levins, and Glenn Stephan.
1983 Team SIUE’s charge to tennis supremacy continued in 1983 at San Marcos, Texas, when the Cougars won a sixth consecutive NCAA Division II team championship for Coach Kent DeMars. SIUE defeated Southwest Texas State 5-4 in the championship match of the tournament. Doug Burke and Joe Vassen would collect the winning point for SIUE at No. 2 doubles, winning a thrilling three-set match. SIUE possessed a stunning lineup of players with Ken Flach at No. 1 singles and Robert Seguso at No. 2 singles. Flach would go on to win his third consecutive NCAA Division II singles title, despite losing the first four games of the final set. He and Seguso captured the NCAA Division II doubles crown. Other key members of the sixth straight national crown were Ernie Mitropoulos, Raimo Ojala, Monty Oppenheim, and Johan Sjogren.
