Since the time of his appointment, Vandegrift has been instrumental in guiding the University toward fulfillment of its vision to be recognized nationally, as a premier Metropolitan University, for the excellence of its programs and development of professional and community leaders. He developed a plan for achievement of the vision by the year 2015 that combines the values and goals of the University with knowledge gained from his 33year career in higher education. Vandegrift is a New Jersey native who came to SIUE from Georgia Southern University, a comprehensive, residential university of 16,000 students, where he served as Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chief Information Officer and Professor of Chemistry. Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE since August 2002. Dr. Hewitt served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh Director of Athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 1970s and 1980s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. Since his start as the Director of Athletics, 37 Cougar teams have competed in their respective NCAA individual or team championships. Hewitt has helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to a 78th place finish in 2004, a 37th place finish in 2005, a 4th place finish in 2006, and an 11th place finish in 2007. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the program that produces the overall best finish in the league’s seven “core” sports. SIUE posted top five finishes in six of the seven sports that count in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, including conference titles in men’s soccer and softball. Also considered are volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. The pinnacle of achievement was a 2007 national championship in softball. In 1994, Hewitt, in his role as Assistant Athletic Director, served as the University’s venue manager for the United States Olympic Festival-’94 track and field and wrestling events. Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE including acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation and acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-2003), and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Athletic Development (1994-1998 and 2000-present). From 1995-1998 and 2000-2002, Hewitt was the internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of University Relations overseeing Alumni Services; SIUE Foundation; Public Affairs; Photographic Services; and University Graphics, Publications, and Printing. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri as well as a master’s in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in education at SIUC in 1994. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as a member of the State Games of America Board of Directors. He is presently serving his second term as a Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift, Carli Connors, Athletic Director Dr. Brad Hewitt and Head member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. Coach Kyler Updyke. In 2006, Hewitt completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute which provides specialized executive management programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. Significant fundraising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. Since 2000 Hewitt was instrumental in securing several multi-million dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These facilities gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat SimmonsCooper Baseball Complex, and the 5,000 sq. ft. SIUE softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a significant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowment from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships. Hewitt and his wife Kay, a professional educator, reside in Edwardsville. Their daughter Loren is a 2007 graduate of SIUE and tennis alumnae, and their son Matthew is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a major in mechanical engineering.

SIUE Athletics Hall of Fame Bob Meyers Bob Meyers guided SIUE women’s tennis to four consecutive national championships in 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. It was an era of Cougar tennis that lives on as one of the best championship runs in NCAA history. While at SIUE, Meyers worked as an assistant athletic director; assistant to the director of Campus Recreation; instructor in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department; as well a men’s tennis coach from 1985 to 1990.
Christina Bokelund An eight-time women’s tennis All-American in singles and doubles, Christina Bokelund was the No. 1 tennis player on the No. 1 team in the nation four years in a row. She helped SIUE win NCAA Division II Championships from 1986 to 1989. Bokelund teamed with Portia George to win doubles titles in 1987 and 1988.
Elisabeth Calander Elisabeth Calander was a two-time national champion in singles during the 1984 and 1985 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, posting an astounding 70-10 record.
Portia George-Morrow An eight-time All-American for the women’s tennis Cougars, Portia George-Morrow helped guide SIUE to an unprecedented four consecutive national championships from 1986 to 1989. George-Morrow teamed with Christina Bokelund for two NCAA Division II doubles championships in 1987 and 1988. She also was a three-time NCAA Division II singles finalist.
Lillian Almeida Ushering in a new era in women’s sports at SIUE, Lilian Almeida was among the first female Cougars to earn AllAmerican honors as a member of the Cougar tennis team. Almeida was an All-American in 1982 in singles as well as doubles.

1986 Team
1987 Team
SIUE’s national championship in women’s tennis in 1986 would be the first of four under Coach Bob Meyers. Portia George, who led the team with 35 victories, advanced to the national quarterfinals in singles. As a team, the Cougars defeated Abilene Christian 7-2 and California Poly-Pomona 6-3 en route to the finals against California State-Northridge. Along with singles and doubles points from George and Christina Bokelund in the national championship match, Jennifer Reuter collected a No. 4 singles and a No. 3 doubles victory to lift SIUE over California State-Northridge 5-4 for its first NCAA crown. Other valuable members of the national championship squad were Michele Wreen, Lisa Schuito, Nicki DeMuro, Jill David and Maura Carriel.
The Cougars lifted its second straight NCAA Division II championship trophy after Jennifer Reuter and Nicky Demuro were victorious at No. 3 doubles in a three-set match over Abilene Christian. The Cougars needed one victory in the doubles matches after taking four of six singles matches in the national championship finals. With the championships hosted by California State-Northridge, SIUE also walked away highly-successful in the singles and doubles events. Christina Bokelund and Portia George won the NCAA Division II doubles crown while George advanced to the finals of the singles tournament. Other key members of the team for Coach Bob Meyers were Michele Wreen, Lisa Schuito, Jill David, and assistant coach Russ Morris.
1988 Team
1989 Team
SIUE women’s tennis traveled to Rohnert Park, California, for the finals in search of a third consecutive national team championship under Coach Bob Meyers, who, ironically, would be honored as the men’s tennis national Coach of the Year. Tied 4-4 in the national championship dual match, the No. 2 doubles match was the only action left on the court. SIUE prevailed 5-4 when Michelle Wreen and Sandi Stace toppled Cal Poly-SLO’s Vicki Kanter and Susan Norman 6-4, 7-5. SIUE’s one-two punch of Christina Bokelund and Portia George cruised through the doubles championship, winning the national title for the second straight season. George advanced to national finals in singles. Bokelund and Wreen, both of whom would be named Senior of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association (ITCA), earned All-American honors for the Cougars. SIUE’s national title team included Jennifer Reuter, Nicki DeMuro, and Leslie Jones.
It was the culmination of four years of success. SIUE, the host of the 1989 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships, won its fourth consecutive national championship at Forest Park in St. Louis. The national individual title came down to the duo of players who had practiced together and played side by side for four seasons. Christina Bokelund defeated Portia George in the all-SIUE finals. Kim Gidley, the No. 3 singles player, was named an All-American for the Cougars. Bokelund and George would go on to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles championship. Coach Bob Meyers and Assistant Coach Russ Morris put together a strong team which included Sandi Stace, Nicki DeMuro, and Michelle Giacomini. DeMuro was a standout, earning her unprecedented third GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
